I have the same motor and getting ready to tear apart. Thank you for taking the time to make this how to video. It makes me more confident in the task now that I have seen it taken apart. I didn't know there was a gasket kit for the lower unit either. You saved me money by buying the kit instead of each part. Thanks again!!
This video saved me a big headache! My water pump screws
We’re broken in the housing and it’s been months since I last worked on my engine . I decided to look into a new housing but didn’t know how to take apart the gear housing until I saw this video ! 196925hp evinrude
GREAT VIDEO!!!!!! GREAT LINKS TOO. Hard to find good vids like this - thanks
Great job and explanation of the work needed. Wish more tutorials were like this. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I just snagged a couple of mint motors 1989 evinrude 25 and 1989 Mercury 20 hp. Hope to have more content soon
Thank you very much for the link to buy that brass bearing removal tool ! I tried using a large punch I already had with no joy. Went ahead and bought that removal punch tool with the graduated steps and it came right out!
Easy peasy lemon squeezy
Purchase a 1/4" socket screw 4" long, grind the OS diameter of the head down to where is just slightly bigger than the ID of the brass bushing - insert in shift rod hole bottom to top, you then have the option of using a phillips head screw driver inserted in the head to DRIVE it out or pull it from top side with a drilled bar and a nut -you won't damage the bushing and it can be reused.
used the link because these are great videos! Thanks!
Good stuff. I just bought one of these and need to do this.
What would cause the hole to the left of the oil fill screw(on the starboard side) to leak oil???
Great video! Thanks
Can you add the part # for the driveshaft roller bearing removal tool? I haven’t had any luck finding it. Thanks for the vid. Great resource.
Do you have the link or part number for the needle bearing removal tool?
Is a 1988 Johnson 28 SPL nearly the same as this model? I’ve heard that the Johnson/Evinrudes from 20-35hp are just about the same. Thanks in advance.
Did you pull the magnet out? if so can you show how it is installed?
I’m old. Can someone help access the links where I can purchase the necessary tools?
I'm working on a 1981 25hp .. I got the seal kit and the impeller kit and 847 , just waiting on the spaghetti.. I bought the spaghetti you suggested.. figured I might as well, .. cost me like 40 bucks or so tho .. also waiting on the brass fitting removal tool. .... I have a question. I'm considering putting in a new thermostat as soon as I'm done with this bottom end... honestly I don't see where the thermostat is located tho ? Like I see where the water hose from the block goes .. but not sure how the thermostat is placed, or attached in this model? .. my last engine was a 72 6hp evinrude... this one is still fairly easy but .. just don't see the housing where a thermostat would go. .... not sure if it even needs replaced .. was gonna replace it even if it doesn't need it .. just so I know it's not a worry for awhile.
Find number 19 in the link below:
www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1981&hp=25&model=J25ECIB&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=Cylinder+And+Crankcase
Frequently I have trouble getting the driveshaft and prop shaft seals out. I usually bend the seal out of shape so bad using the screwdriver method, I have to end up cutting the seal out with a Dremel tool. I sure would like to find a better way to remove these seals. I have done probably 20 of the old OMC motors, and I always struggle to get the old seals out.
I use a big wrench and put the cylinder in a vice with rags and take a 3/4 wrench and pry it out with the claw comes right out most of the time
Whats top and bottom of the drive shaft
Is this same for 1978 Johnson 25hp. I need to check forward gear and clutch dog. Probably need seal kit. ?
Yes it is
I’m looking to purchase a new needle bearing ( the one that the drive shaft goes into, not the gear case needle bearing ) 76 Johnson 25 HP, as well as the six screws that hold the skag on. Do you have a link to where I can purchase those ? Thanks and great video
www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1976&hp=25&model=25602E&manufacturer=Evinrude§ion=Gearcase
When removing the brass shift rod bushing. If you use a tap to remove the bushing with a thread rod can you reuse the bushing
Do not use the tap method. See my other videos
Just looked up the 2-4-C grease, it says in the description NOT for use in needle bearings, i see thats what you used on your needle bearings, any idea why they say that?
hi sir,can you tell what impellar repair kit part number that lower unit?what year is that lower unit.i have 25hp and mine lower unit look the same.
Do you have to take the whole lower unit off or can I keep engine upright and just unscrew bottom off or will the gears all fall out
You need to take the entire lower unit off
Ok thank you very much
The top seal (driveshaft) in the kit is much thinner than the original. But in the kit there are two of them. So do you install one on top of the other or just use one of them?? There is enough room to get both of them in there
What did you end up doing if you remember?😂
@@sethmarshall5023 I just installed one of the seals. Worked out great.
Will the parts list and disassembly be the same for my 1970 johnson 25hp
Help the 6 screws will not come out even when tapping with screw driver and hammer. Can I heat the housing?
Do what you got to do but be carefull
Try an impact screw driver
Hi, where can I get the seal (309044)? The link you shared has been out of stock for over a year. Thanks!
Great Videos. Is the 1957 fd-11 18hp lower unit seal kit the same as the 1958 ones you have listed? I read somewhere the seal to the prop shaft is different on the older 57 models and Evinrude change size in the middle of the year.
hey man do you have a carb rebuild for a early 80s 20?
Could you give me a link for the clutch dog?
do i have to have dent spring in a 1975 25 HP evinrude
What is the part number or link to the driveshaft bearing tool?
Is this the same process for a 72 evinrude fastwin 18hp?
Doc Holiday yes very similar.
@@thisoldoutboard thank you
That thicker spaghetti seal is unavailable right now from Amazon. Do you have a source for it elsewhere. Or if you have the roll would you sell me enough to do two lower units?
You can find it on eBay too ebay.to/2m9GUwG
@@thisoldoutboard awesome thank you
What tool for bearing please
I just Subscribed, I have the same exact Outboard, and will be doing it myself, Thanks,,btw,,wear gloves especially when prying things, your hand almost got hit by the screwdriver, safety first man.
Safety third! These videos need a little suspense
I can't seem to find my engine on your seal kit list.... 1983 25hp evinrude.
1983s are different. They don’t have the split case. They use a different procedure
I was wrong. In 85 they went away from the split gear case
Sierra Marine 18-2657 or BRP 396352 is what you need for your 83
That’s my gear head 76 25hp were do I get a gasket set I’m in the uk
eBay? Search marineengine.com to find the part number
Would this be the same for a 1984 25 hp 2 stroke model?
Yes as long as you have the split case skeg style lower unit
@@thisoldoutboard thanks for the reply
READ THIS!!! Buy the Brass Bushing Removal Tool using the ebay link "thisoldoutboard" provides on the video! Got a '75 25h.p. and even using the tool--it was a $#@%& to get out! If you have a brass bushing to remove that's as tough as mine was, there's no way around it! In the process I "mushroomed" the striking end of the tool before the bushing even started to move! Do not hammer on the small end! Use a center punch and two 4" sections of angle iron to go between the bushing and housing so you can tap the special tool out of the bushing! This one was a beast, but it's done! Thanks to "thisoldoutboard" for the help. Ultra fast shipping on special tool!
I know this is like a year old video.. but the removal tool ( 0304514) and install tool (0304515) are hard to find would you plz give the measurements for the tools the removal tool i know has 3 different sizes on the 1 rod and the install is 2 on 1 rod. If you could get those measurement it would be very helpful to get a set made. TIA.
I’ll get you the dimensions this weekend. If you don’t have them by Monday send me another comment as a reminder
Awesome Thanks..
Thanks This should help.. I'ma see if I can get this made by a local machine shop...
Did you ever get any made
@@johnsain3117 No I didn't the shop around me was asking way to much to make so I ordered the removal tool frm website I think it was crowley marine.
