I think this was an abridged version, truncated to fit on a few cassette tapes, probably in the 80's when talking books became popular, mainly for car stereos. Just watched episode 1. The best 1st episode to a TV show that I've watched in years. Absolutely fantastic! Going to re-watch it immediately after posting this comment. It's a show that _MUST_ be watched. An instant classic! I'm old enough to remember the 1980s version with Richard Chamblain & loved it, at the time. I rewatched some of it this week... Parts of it were laughable 😂
@@debchelsea Yeah. The 1980 version hasn't aged well. It's supposed to be Japan, 1600, but feels very Starsky & Hutch. TV was miles below the movies, up to HBO kickstarting the Golden age of TV, late 90's. Movie stars rarely deigned to appear in TV drama, unless they were on the downward slope and/or desperate. Alec Guinness starring in Tinker, Tailor, 1979, was one of the few exceptions, that I can think of.
Love the audiobook and narration, other than some tetchy japanese pronounciation like 'wakarimasu ka?' You dont pronounce the su like 'masu' its just pronounced like 'wakarimass ka', the 'u' is silent
Very well read by the same reader of the Sharpe series. Not sure if this will be an abridged version, but the novel is actually quite long. Shogun is a fascinating action/ romance depiction of 1600s Japan through the narration of European ignorance and egocentrism.
I find the term 'arrogant' to be an issue - as if to condemn. The main issue was culture shock. Notice that the Japanese viewed anyone other than themselves as "barbarian". That's how cultures tended to be towards those who weren't very close to themselves - and even ones which were, sometimes.
@@banedon8087this is correct , the book is meant to show the Japanese and Europeans as ignorant and arrogant . The developing relationship between mariko and anjin is meant to show how with a little effort people from completely worlds can come together as one and understand each other.

The 1980 series is better. Slower, yes. But more true to the original. However. I do enjoy watching the new version for the cultural input.

That is an apt description, but I find the arrogant Eurocentrism adds to the time period and makes the main character feel more realistic.
