The clash of two legendary and feared classes of warrior: the Mongols and the samurai. They meet on the beaches of Tsushima. What did combat between them look like? Misconceptions persist about this question: from the belief that samurai attempted “single combat” dueling to the idea that Mongols utterly dominated the samurai on the battlefield. Today, we look at the fascinating warfare that characterized the first and second Mongol invasions.

7:34 As a sailor this part gave me chills of remembrance, i was sailing from Fukuoka to Australia during peak typhoon (late august) season and got hit with some of the worst weather i have ever seen, it's as described in this video, the skies blackened and for the next 10 hours the sea threw us around and reminded us just how small and insignificant we are.
The sound of the ship's body moaning and twisting must've been horrifying.
what were you sailing in? I've sailed around 20,000 nautical miles over the course of a couple years, in my early 20's, mainly in a 65ft gaff schooner, 6mo on a 169ft (sparred) tops'l schooner, but the scariest was a 6 day crossing from the Bahamas to Montego Bay, Jamaica, in a 26 ft fiberglass sloop; we didn't see real nasty weather (the worst I saw was on the gaff schooner), but getting past the violent, tall and close chop of the shoal, windward side of the island in the Bahamas, trying to get out to the manageable swells in deep water, took 3 attempts, and the violent crashing down and into waves when below in the 26ft sloop, along with the loud banging and wrenching on the hull, was terrifying; seemed like the boat would surely be stove in or torn apart.
It was also a delivery, and my first 3 days sailing in her; the only other crew was the skipper, who had only a few days to prepare before leaving Florida a week prior, single-handed, so we didn't really know what might be close to failure, having not had a professional inspection done. Good times
I still have a hopeful plan to sail round the world, specifically I'd like to sail from southern Chile, through the South Pacific islands, explore New Zealand and Australia, then sail up to SE Asia.
japan imo shows a perfect example of why being an island is such a tactical advantage, similar could be said for other historical world powers like the uk. the mongols were a much greater force in terms of man power and realistically in military tactics but the fact that they had to invade by sea meant that japan actually had a chance of stopping a mongol invasion.
People think that the Japanese didn't know what they were doing, but they were very intentional. In the first war, they defeat the Mongols, and the storm destroyed them as they were limping back to Korea. In the second war, they denied landing sites to the Mongols and just waited for the typhoon season.
Ironically, Taiwan has a similar defense strategy. There is only a small window of time where an amphibious invasion is possible. Then typhoon season starts, followed by winter squalls, which makes resupply and air/naval support impossible.
@@bellgrandbro theres a weather app to avoid the typhoon season lmao and you think a 80000 ton carrier and military grade naval ship is gna give a shit with some waves?
@@YB-uc3kj Yes, you underestmate the power of waves, freakish ocean waves that rise as tall as a ten storey apartment block have been accepted as the leading cause of large cargo ship sinking (Post panamax cargo ships are between 85,000 and 110,000 tonnes)
I think the exact opposite. Until the Muromachi period that would be correct, but from the time the samurai class grew and became the terror of East Asia, their powers went beyond China and Joseon. China and Joseon suffered devastating blows even by Japanese pirates, being pushed back in hand-to-hand combat. There are many records of chinese National troops, more than 10 times many, hide in castle while the pirates plundered the village.
Commodore Matthew Perry would very much disagree with you haha. Also while islands are easier to defend, the lack of resources is an almost constant issue.

The invasion of Japan by the Mongols indirectly contributed to the fall of the ruling Kamakura Shogunate. Many samurais were bitter that the Shogunate did not adequately reward them for literally saving the entirety of japan, and instead honored mere monks for their thoughts and prayers. Consequently conflict breaks out and the Shogunate was no more.
Always pay your people right 😅
i mean you can kind of see why the shogunate honored the monks instead of the samurai, japan wouldve been taken if it werent for the typhoon
@@whyyes6429 The real reason why the monks were rewarded was because it was much cheaper for the Shogunate to do so, compared to rewarding their samurais who did the fighting.

This was super interesting. I had always thought the Mongol spread was land based and on horse. I never knew they had a naval fleet, especially one as large as that.
They didn’t. They forced their imperial subjects and Koreans to make the fleet (as well as being cannon fodder and crew). Their failed Japanese and Javanese attack bankrupted the Mongolian empire

Woah! I'm watching every History Dose video from oldest to newest, and this feels like the start of a new era of even better quality. The graphics now feel like I'm in one of those 3D presentation rides at an amusement park. It's like I'm in a vehicle on a track in a dark hallway, that's telling a story as it goes along. Images are on the wall and lit up with glowy lights; and when an important moment in the story happens, the vehicle stops and a spotlight illuminates one of those "hologram" animations to convey it. That's what this video feels like.
I'm really looking forward to watching the rest of these vids. Even though the quality is incredible, I will not take it for granted, and will still super enjoy them if they have more basic graphics.
It was awesome and scary seeing such a realistic portrayal of the Samurai and how they fought. Archery was super important to them, which I wasn't expecting. The pride-based culture of requiring evidence for who they killed really adds that historical Japanese flair to them, and it was real too. Including the storm's impact made the story more realistic, because real war isn't just about the heroes, it's also largely about the conditions and using them to your advantage.
"If I had a nickle for every time a typhoon destroyed the Mongol fleet, I'd have two nickles. Which is not a lot but it's still weird that it happened twice."
By absorbing the Chinese fleet, they got hold of one of the largest fleets in the world. In their struggle for the dominium of the seas, maybe it is not as unlikely that they had to fight the seas it self so often.
The mongols stayed for months around Japan looking for a place to land so it's not that surprising a typhoon would eventually hit in a place with a lot of typhoons
One of their most important weapons was prayer. Remember that.
Stormy waters saved Taiwan for a while after '49
Isnt that from Doofenshmirz
Damn, the samurai actually rowed out in small boats TO ATTACK the Mongols on board.
Its always the attack you don't expect coming to be the most impactful.
Why would you expect children to suddenly turn and kill you, they probably wont.
But if they do you wont expect it and you wont be ready.
thats gangsta, but i can see a mongol having the advantage in horse back but samurais being better on foot close range ware fare
This day and age we call that a base rape
Samurai have been called a death cult, and it's true. They contemplated their own death as daily meditation and considered death in combat the only goal worth obtaining, a close second being the honor of taking the head of a worthy opponent. The crazy bastards groomed themselves before every battle so that of their head was taken they would not be dishonored by a disheveled appearance.

They probably hate the hat though
Random Crusader yeah, the maxed out one looks like something out of looney tunes, so you can wear the headband of serenity for a more understated look
Alternatively, you could have one samurai who is somehow also trained in stealth and has literal supernatural abilities like a healing factor which seems to grow stronger with hot spring water, teleporting up to 3 times while attacking with his sword to the sound of thunder, and mind controlling enemies to attack one at a time
Edit: likes seem to show that most people get who I’m talking about but since some folks still seem confused in replies here: look up Jin Sakai.
Yes lol
Lmao I learned of that
When you put it that way, Jin really sounds like a hybrid between Tanjiro and Zenitsu

@@Crazy_Schizo I personally enjoy learning about history. Just because someone knows something you don't and it makes you feel dumb doesn't mean you have to be rude.

Sumo: *Massive Attack*
Mongols: *Conquers Russia in the dead of winter when they're supposed to be on a scouting mission*
Also Mongols: *Throws 4000 ships directly onto the ocean floor because they didn't learn their lesson the first time*
Cause Mongolia is also a cold country. Winter not a problem for them. Ulan Bator is the coldest capital in world.
Because Russia was conquered by Golden Horde, which was ruled by Batu Khan, where majority of warriors were nomads (Turks, Tatars). They were one nation. Japan was invaded by Yuan Mongol Empire, which was ruled by Kublai Khan, where nomads were minority. Koreans and Chinese were majority, they were not one nation, they even spoke on different languages. Tactics and skills were different. There were three generals(Mongolian, Korean, Chinese) and they worked separately without one systematic plan, also they didn’t have enough experience on naval battle. On the other hand, Golden Horde’s army fought as one unified mechanism. They perfectly knew how to fight in field. And they also knew how to conquer Russia because their ancestors had done it many times.
They didn't get destroyed by winter. They got destroyed by storms. The Mongols probably had no experience in facing against severe storms.
You have to acknowledge a fact that there was no Russia back in those days, only different little medieval kingdoms inside of it, most of the time at war between themselves.
@@lemondruid2783 thanks for the info i know nothing about Russia history apart from Viking show and some things i studied
Great video, such quality
Medieval Japan was truly a magical place, both in power and belief. Media didn’t need to ruin it. Videos like this bring it back to life, I thank you.

@@possiblymaybe6711 Most of people only read the patriotic part but ignore the dark side lmao. Anyway, everything good on earth must have dark side and that's normal.
@@ananditotugarisman9122 being enslaved has always been pretty standard throughout history, and the lesser punishment compared with the alternative, if we're demonizing everybody who ever enslaved then we're demonizing almost every civilization that ever existed.
Obviouly now its totally unacceptable but keep in mind that neing enslaved didnt mean to be tortured and whipped all the time, it meant hard labor, which is something almost everyone had to do anyway
And yes I know it seems like Im downplaying slavery but it really was normal back in the day, people werent like "omg slavery is so inhumane, how can someone be so cruel?" it actually was as normal as going to prison for war crimes
Having said that, the japanese were still problematic, they enjoyed raiding the korean coast all the time, and since that coast now belonged to the mongols they were a constant menace and the mongols wouldnt accept the constant possibility of one day being invaded by japan's full force
There's no good guys standing, the trully good guys were the first to die
@@possiblymaybe6711 How so? Mongolia's army was made up of conquered people they were forcing to fight to conquer an island that was minding its own business. Ironically it's the Mongols that made the isolationist Japanese expansionists.

Ghost of Tsushima is a top contender for Game of The Year.
El Bottoo bag last of us aint gonna do that good just cause of the story
Ac valhalla beats this game alone. Then you have cyberpunk to come... this aint shit
El Bottoo neither TLOU2 nor FF7 come close to Ghost.
El Bottoo the last of us 2 won’t win anything. Everything about that games story is trash.
@El Bottoo don't even mention that shitshow tlou2 is worst goty😂😂 goty is cyberpunk, maybe ghost gets a mention.
