Even the developers of Ghost of Tsushima said this game wasn’t meant to be historically accurate. Every character was fictional and they focused more on just presenting a authentic Feudal Japanese experience. The only accurate part was the beginning battle of the Mongol Invasion in which a cavalry charge of 80 samurai attempted to cut down the Mongol invaders. Even Mongol records revealed that the Samurai of Tsushima fought with a determination and ferocity the Mongols never saw from an enemy before. Even one source stating a witness of how one samurai downed 25 Mongols before he was finally overwhelmed.

I agree, I don't think the game was ever meant to be "historically accurate," that's just a term that's always given to anything that is based on historical reality (movies, books, and video games). Sucker Punch wanted to create a game that was 'authentic' in terms of the general time period, the costumes, the setting, etc. (even if not everything was 100% accurate in terms of timelines), and at the same time giving us an exciting, fresh take on the open-world gaming experience. I think they succeeded tremendously.
And best of all, the biggest win in my eyes is that this game is inspiring many to learn about the actual history behind the game. Anytime something makes you want to learn more about world history, is a huge win in my book.

The Mongol invasion of Korea was actually glossed over here, but it was actually a pretty interesting campaign in its own right. It took over 2 decades with the Koreans fighting tooth and nail to keep their country. Korea fought the Mongols with their regular army and "Righteous Armies", private militia groups that engaged in unorthodox tactics due to their small unit size. They utilized their mountain fortresses to stage defensive war on the Mongols, and the war ended up taking 6 campaigns before the Koreans, ravaged by the war and racked with famine, sued for peace. Korea was then given autonomy under the Mongols in exchange for one of their princesses marrying a Mongol prince, a fairly uncommon arrangement for Mongol subjects.

    • @zizouace4890
      @zizouace4890 Pƙed 3 lety +85

yes it was interesting. it took many attempts for the mongols to finally conquer Korea.
these are the only nations (as far as i know) that managed to defeat the mongol invaders and maintained their freedom:
      - japan (reportedly, the samurai on ships halted the mongol advance with constant suicide attacks, until allegedly some storms destroyed mongol ships and stopped their invasion)
-vietnam (by warfare on the sea, the vietnamese repelled two or three mongol occupations but were still subjugated to tributary payments. like the japanese, the vietnamese made use of the mongols' primary weakness, fear of the sea.)
      - Afghanistan (mongols were heavily defeated at the Battle of parwan and in smaller battles with afghan tribal warriors . it was the first mongol defeat ever. Afghan (Pashtun) tribes kept their sovereignty, but some afghan cities in the north were still sacked and destroyed)
-india under Afghan rule (though india was ruled and protected by a Muslim Afghan/turkic empire (khilji dynasty). therefore the credit goes to these Afghans and Turks, and not to indians. The Afghan khilji empire killed so many mongol troops, that they built a tower made of the skulls of the mongol army)
      - chechenya (mongols were utterly defeated twice. both mongol invasion ended with the complete destruction of the mongol army)
      - java in Indonesia (jungle guerilla warfare forced the mongols to withdraw)
      honorable mentions:
before mentioning the biggest and most impactful mongol defeat, here are some mentions of nations who were conquered by the mongols but only after a strong display of resistance:
-vulgar bulgars (turkic muslims in modern-day russia. they defeated the mongols in the battle of samarra bend. BUT later, the mongols invade again and won.)
-korea. it took the mongols like 6 or so attempts to fully subjugate the korean peninsula.
now most decisive and mongol defeat:
      - egypt and Syria (ie. mamluke dynasty. mongols were decisively defeated at the Battle of ain jalut and in many other battles in the levant (like in the battles of Marj al-Saffar 1303, 2nd homs, elbistan ect). mongol rule pushed back and started to significantly decline.)
it needs to be mentioned the mamlukes in Egypt and Syria were the only ones who decisively defeated the mongols in several conventional battles, effectively stopped their advance and repelled them. then, the decline of the mongol empire started.

They forced withdrawal by ship at nigh though any night navigations were very dangerous those days.
And then, their ships were overtaken by a windstorm during their retreat.

The myth that Samurai relied on Typhoons to repel the Mongols was actually something that the Kamakura shogunate created.
In reality multiple battles happened between the Samurai and the Mongols, and the former more often than not came out on the top. The shogunate however propagated the typhoon myth to discredit the Samurai, in order to give an excuse for not giving out rewards to the nobles and warriors who did the fighting for them.

Most Samurai at the Kamakura period didn't even had Katanas , Japanese scholars (Go watch Japanese documentaries if you bother) If the Ianding was successful Japan would've been devastated against 140'000 strong heavy armored with steel and chainmail army marching with explosive precursor grenades and wielding variety of weapons from different empires they just conquered with big ass shields that the Samurai never seen before.
Emperor and Shogun's only reason to use this miracle of an event "Kamikaze" was for the National Spirit and religious unity and cultural revolution for all Japan, NOT for that you just said.

The samurai's reinforcements arrived one after another from all over Japan, and even without the typhoon the Mongolian army would have been defeated because they could not supply.

1281, the 2nd invasion of Tsushima which is 6 years after the 1st game.
The "Ghost" is hunted by the Shogun yes, but the Ghost is good at hiding.
Regardless of whether you killed or spared your Uncle in the game, the results is the same, the Ghost is a 'outcast' and is hunted down.
But the peasants supports the Ghost, and most likely will not support the government in hunting him down (Jin single-handedly helped pushed back the mongol invaders in the game of course, he's a hero in the peasants' eyes).
I can see Ghost of Tsushima 2 taking place in 1280-1281, where Mongols/Korean/Chinese forces invade Tsushima again, but this time, the Ghost is prepared and trained the peasantry in the ways of 'stealth' and espionage maybe.
Late 13th century, ninjas were not acknowledged nor exist as a job/role. It's in the 14th century where they are 'rumored' and acknowledged, and 15th century is where they exist officially in the eyes of the public.
It's also possible to have Jin have a "adopted" son in the sequel, where you play as his son in the post-game years after the invasion of Tsushima ends and the 'Ghost' was hunted unexpectedly (maybe Jin helped the Japanese forces and once their mutual enemy is gone, they stabbed him in the back). In this part of the game, you are facing the samurai now and is not technically the Ghost, but similar.
Just like how Shiramura adopted Jin to be his son (and was killed or spared afterwards), we could have the same 'adoption' methods used by Jin instead?

Send them forward and shoot arrows, firearms and sometimes explosives through, over and past them. Essentially if you weren't a samurai in Japan your life was SHITTY, even royalty was often taken hostage to capitulate other warring factions and for land. ALSO Japanese would test their swords on prisons... got a new blade? just take a guy out his cells and chop his ass in two... then complain the sword wasn't sharp enough and do it again. It became such a problem during several phases of Japan where Samurai would instigate minor offenses just to cut down civilians.

Samurai were ferious and honorable warriors. They had no fear of death, obedient unto death, no question of their services to their superior, and and being a servant it's called Bushido. Samurai weren't used to Chinese weapon technology back then like weapons that explode similar to modern day hand grenades. Mongolian hordes had Chinese and Koreans on their side but yet they had some difficulty on language barrier. The great Kublai Khan tried again against the Japanese seashore to fight the fearless samurai. Chinese ship builders who actually hated the Mongols so much sabotaged their ships to be less sea worthy. About 8,000 ships sailed to Japan and the Japanese prayed to nature and ancestors for help then the great typhoons hit. Out of those 8,000 ships only 100 survived the terrible waves. Survivors were picked off by waiting Japanese samurai warriors. The great Kamikaze(Devine Wind) was born. The word kamikaze came out once again when Japan were losing World War 2 and Japanese fighters laden with explosives would ram his plane to American aircraft carriers. There were other types of kamikaze not planes but human torpedoes, 2 man submarines, etc.

A 1980 movie called Shogun with Richard Chamberlain who played as a real British navigator who became the first British to be a samurai in 1600. There was a tall black African man who became a samurai in the late 1500s. There were an Arabic man who became a samurai as well. During World War 2 Japanese fighters and military officers had a samurai sword in his hand to go to battle. They built high stone walls on the coast of Hakata Bay, blocking the Mongolian army's collective tactics and firearm attacks. On the contrary, the samurai attacked the Mongolian army's ships at night and caused great damage to the Mongolian army. The Mongolian army left the coast once and settled in a bay on the island of Takashima to prepare their corps. This time, a typhoon visited there.
