      Alternative Title: Khiljī dynasty
Khaljī dynasty, also spelled Khiljī, (1290-1320), the second ruling family of the Muslim sultanate of Delhi. The dynasty, like the previous Slave dynasty, was of Turkish origin, though the Khaljī tribe had long been settled in Afghanistan. Its three kings were noted for their faithlessness, their ferocity, and their penetration of the Hindu south.

There are a few mistakes I think about Zafar khan and his role in the battle against Mongols. When Qutlugh Khuwaja was crossing over India and marching towards Delhi, Zafar khan was stationed at Multan and not Delhi. Alaudin Khilji was in Delhi himself but was informed very late of Mongol invasion and hence had a very little time to make preparations for the battle. Many suggested that they should fight from inside but Alaudin rejected and decided to face Mongols on the battle field. Zafar khan intercepted Qutlugh Khuwaja on many occasions but Qutlugh khuwaja refused to engage him in a battle because he wanted to reach delhi on the earliest. He famously once told Zafar Khan off when he tried to challenge him by saying that Kings only fight kings and that Zafar khan should join his king against Qutlugh Khuwaja. Upon his arrival and when battle formations were set, Alaudin explicitly told his generals to not chase mongols without his orders because he was well aware of Mongol tactics. Punishment for such disobedience was death. When the battle started and Zafar khan neglected Alaudin's orders he found himself surrounded by Mongols. He knew no help was going to come. Only way forward was death and hence he ordered his men to fight like hundreds. 500 men killed 5000. Zafar khan in a bid to redeem himself fought gallantly. Mongols who witnessed such courage lost morale and once Qutlugh was seriously injured, the battle was over.

They conquered China. Heat would not be a problem. They can invade during winter time in Northern India. The reason they failed is, the great conquests of the Mongols which we are aware happened much before 1390's.
The Mongol armies that the Delhi Sultanate faced was a shadow of the army under Ghengis, Jebe Subutai, Hulagu.

If Delhi had supported him then, we might have seen the finest fighting force on the planet at that time breeze past the Delhi armies.

The elephants were fearsome without any doubt, but history would point out that an army with elephants had also lost. Example, when Timur the Lame invaded India in the later part of 1300's he was faced with an army that had numerous elephants. He devised an ingenious plan of setting the back of his camels on fire and forcing them to run towards the elephants. The result was that the elepahnats trampled their own men out of fear

During his initial campaign against the Xi Xia Ghengis was having difficulties in breaking into the fort walls.
It was the commoner Subutai who came up with a plan. It was to attack the gates and sure enough it would be repulsed with casualties. But while attacking the gate the Mongols carried a chest along with them. After killing the raiding party, Xi Xia general was curious to know what was in the chest. After making sure no Mongol was around he sent his party out to open the chest. When they opened it, they found birds inside which flapped their wings and flew away. This was the signal for the Mongols that Xi Xia soldiers had come out of the gate. They stormed the gate and the rest is history.
Such brilliance, would have found a way to deal with the elephants, if it became too much of a threat to them.

Feigned Retreat is a tactic used by the Mongols. Alaudin was aware of this and did not want to fall in the trap. Zafar Khan's animosity of mongols had been sharpened by his continuous engagement with them, so he threw himself with whole lot passion before .. unfortunately becoming surrounded. But this did the job of winning the battle. Neither was Alaudin suspicious of him, for he had left him at Delhi many times, when he was campaigning at other places. In the battle, when Zafar had gone too far, the Sultan was angry . Zafar Khan was a loyal commander, who did not risk his Sultan by retreating back, though he was facing death in front of him.
Also we must consider the logistics of those ages with no satellite phone, no wireless or for that matter the communications with command centres. In those days, outcome of battles depended many times on the ability to take informed decisions and of course the bravery or courage of few to inspire the whole lot. Zafar was brave and his troops courageous. He fell like a hero that day for his Sultan.
