    How to feet stomp, how to tic-tac, how to caveman, how to primo, how to monster walk for beginners and why you should learn them first.
    This is how I learned these tricks. Some people might do them slightly differently, but hopefully these tricks can help you get your first 5 tricks on a skateboard and overcome any fears by taking the in-depth steps I've laid out in this video. I love to deconstruct tricks to learn them and make them less intimidating, so hopefully this helps you too!

    These are all great beginner tricks, I've learned them all now and I will say, caveman is 50% about being good at throwing your board in the right place at the right speed. At first I just yeeted it too far and too fast and it was impossible to land on it haha. I also improved my tic tacs because of this video. I could do them before and I do them as a warm up, but I didn't do them with that much style. I like that there's a flow to this trick, it's fun when you get into it. Now I'm trying to learn it in switch too.

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety

      Haha throwing the board in the right place is definitely important. That's why I tend to not throw it and more...drop it 😂 But that's awesome! Getting smooth and stylish tictacs is awesome. It's a trick that feels great and is a perfect intro to switch. That's how I started too. With tactics 😃

    • @maarikaaa
      @maarikaaa Před 3 lety +1

      @@SarahParkMatott Yeah, it's a gentle drop really haha. 😃 Switch is hard but I feel like it makes me overall better at skating when I ride switch. My goal is to be comfortable riding switch because right now it makes me feel like I can't skate at all when I do it. I don't think I will try to learn every switch trick too but with some tricks it makes sense to be able to do them both ways like with manuals/nose manuals or no-comply 180.

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety

      @@maarikaaa Totally feel that. When you start to learn switch it's like learning everything all over. So, I also try to focus on it too! You'll get super comfortable quick tho, I'm sure! The nice thing about the slow monster walks in this video is that they're great for practicing switch. I used to do some monster walks and stop when rolling switch and work on tic tacs there! 😃

    • @maarikaaa
      @maarikaaa Před 3 lety

      @@SarahParkMatott Right! Monster walks and endovers are very helpful, I want to get good at them. Someone said there's really no straightforward 'switch' in freestyle and when doing stuff like endovers or primo tricks I can see what they meant.

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety

      Haha it's definitely a little different. A lot of tricks require doing stuff with both feet too. But "switch" is less of a conscious thought I think even if it's there.

    Just starting skating on and off for the last few weeks, and still getting comfortable balancing on my board. But I decided to try out the feet stomp today, and while it was kind of terrifying at first, I managed to get it and got pretty consistent with it. I found that it almost immediately helped a lot with my balance and stability, and getting over the fear of the board slipping out from under me. My tic tacs started getting a little better as well. So thank you for this video! Your way of breaking things down into small steps that build on each other helped a lot. I've been a musician my whole life, and that's how I learn difficult passages. Get good at playing two notes, then add the third, then the fourth, etc. Not sure why I didn't think of it that way with skateboarding at first! I'm going to keep progressing with the rest of the tricks in this video.

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety +2

      haha it is terrifying at first! But you're right, it's awesome practice for just jumping onto your board and getting balanced :D I'm glad this video has helped you! The musician part is an interesting connection. I've played a bunch on instruments as well, and you're right about that. Getting the first few notes and then adding and adding more while perfecting the ones you played first. That's an awesome way to think about it. Good luck as you progress! With that mindset, you're going to do great 😃

    Yo I know a lot of people say this but I love the way you work progression into your tutorials. It's not just "here's how to do this really hard thing" but "here's how to work up the confidence to even try this really hard thing" and that's WAY more helpful.
    Thanks to your tutorial I just learned how to caveman in like 30 minutes on my first week of skating. Was scared to death of them and now I'm stomping 'em out every time. Went through the exact progression you laid out.
    Keep doing what you're doing!

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey! That's awesome. I'm stoked the progression worked so well for you. I always think that knowing how to do something isn't nearly as important as how I get from here to there in the first place! (if that makes sense 🧐) For example, I know how to do X trick, but knowing how to do it and then how to work up to a point where I can actually try the trick or the full trick is typically the key for me. They're both invaluable for me when it comes to learning. So, thank you! I'm glad you like the method that much.

    thanks for the video. i actually hated tictacs bc idk. i could do it on the spot but i couldn't make the board to move forward. so they were not fluid boring and awkward. i tried your cool snake-like motion it's nice, but still i kept standing in place. the only thing that helped me is that i completely stopped thinking about anything but my back foot, like if i was doing it with just one foot, you have this in the video, that the pressure goes from heel to the toe so it creates momentum. but somehow i didn't get it right from the start and everything was not synchronized. i put a pressure in the wrong time maybe.. idk. anyway, i finally don't hate them *that much* now. thanks!

And when awkward tictacs in place are not that fun, snaking around with smooth tictacs definitely are! Thank you for this video (found through a comment on r/NewSkaters), I am only really interested in learning to cruise about on my board, so doing tricks don't appeal to me much (I want to learn to Ollie eventually though, so I can dodge bumps and cracks, and get over curbs)...
    I am a beginner and have been out with my board three times so far (which doesn't sound like much, but I think I have totally around 8 hours on the board) - but I seem to have hit the point where I am not progressing that well, due to balance issues and perhaps being too scared to fall off my board (had my first fall yesterday!). These tricks are great and seem like they would be useful for getting my confidence up, and improving my balance on my board, so I can then get better at cruising about - seems like you can do these tricks at home, which is great because I live in the UK and it rains a lot haha...
    Cheers!

      Hi! That's awesome. Just being able to cruise around on a board is amazing. I wish I lived in a place were that was possible, but I'm surrounded by rocks and trees out here haha If your goal is cruising and eventually ollie-ing over cracks and stuff, I definitely recommend working on freestyle foot work (monsterwalks, walk the dog, switchblade). They helped my get comfortable on my board sooo quickly! Seriously was my secret! And then hippie jumps, caveman, etc for comfort jumping on the board (and eventually learning to ollie). Those will really help you level up your comfort and board control 💪 Keep cruising!

      I will make a note of the tricks you mentioned - I tried the jumping on the board one whilst stationary last night. Didn't do the flipping the upside board part onto it's wheels as it was late and didn't want to make too much noise haha - but I was surprised how the board didn't slip under my feet when I jumped on it.

      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi! I'm glad you liked the video 😃
      Kickturns get easier the more you do them for sure. And it is indeed a trick that's mostly done in the shoulders (the tension that builds up from turn them). I'm not exactly sure how you're doing the backside kick turn because it really depends what stance you're in and if you're rolling regular/fakie etc. But, in general, I would recommend starting with the monster walks. The great thing about monster walks (and the slow ones here) is that you get to do one kick turn after another in two directions. And then working on the other directions (like turning into your blind shoulder) after you start to get these down! It will probably be a lot easier. Lead with your shoulders and keep your knees slightly bent, and you'll get it with practice for sure! :D
      Repositioning your foot will definitely get better with practice too, but I would recommend going up on the ball of your foot when moving your foot. It will reduce the surface area on the grip tape and also allow you to keep your weight on that foot. Ruins the bottom of your shoes, but that's the life of a skater 😄
      You'll get a little better everyday :D

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety +1

      @@paulsaalfeld9844 Yes! No problem :D The ball of your foot is the round part below your toes (specifically the big toe).
      And I wouldn't recommend intentionally riding in the rain with a good set up. Rain can get stuck in the deck and it can rust your bearings. It's better to ride a good skateboard in dry weather, but if it starts to rain while you're skating it won't immediately ruin the board. I use a really old board to ride when the ground is wet.

    • @SarahParkMatott

      You can probably do a modified version of this on a cruiser board. Cruisers tend to have pretty grippy wheels, which can make them slightly harder (especially to do them properly, which involves slightly sliding the wheels along the ground--something a beginner doesn't have to worry about though). I would give it a go and see what happens! It's basically a great way to practice pivots :D

    idk man, skating is just... weird sometimes
    i mean i still think that the most important thing to know is how to ollie
    but actually the first thing a beginner should spend time to get good at is riding, just riding the board around without trying to do anything (i love doing this)
    after you are super comfy riding your skateboard THEN you can try tricks
    i actually learned how to shove it first of all, which i learned
    after that i did learn how to ollie
    then i got my fakie shove its and fakie ollies REALLY well to the point i forgot how to do them normal lmao
    now i have been learning how to ride switch, like pushing switch (not mongo)
    what i say is that they all tell you that after the ollie you can learn all the other tricks super fast... but that is not true
    i mean i learned how to ollie in 2 or 3 days trying hard, the first day my friend told me how you do it, the second and the third one i just kept doing what they told me to and i learned it, simple
    but yeah, that is a great achieve, but the thing now is how to heelflip or kickflip, after you learn either one or the another THEN you can actually learn everything else much easier
    but yeah now about the video itself, i think the most important of all these tricks is the tictac, gosh this one helps a LOT in riding!

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, well...I think we have very different approaches to learning to skateboard. And I don't think that's a bad thing. One of the big reasons I wanted to make this channel was just to share an alternate view of skateboarding and the process as the larger narrative is "learn to ollie then be a skater" it seems. If you saw any other videos of mine, I'm actually a big advocate of putting off learning to ollie. I've seen a lot of people quit because they can't learn to ollie. And while riding around a ton is amazing advice and I completely agree with it, not everyone likes to just ride (in fact, I don't have a safe place to just cruise where I live, so wasn't really an option for me). I worked my board control up with endovers and monster walks in a park basketball court. And this is why, I like to advocate for learning a lot of freestyle footwork (like monster walks and endovers) because they build board control if you can't just ride, jumping tricks because the ollie and most street style tricks require jumps, and other tricks that are just fun so you can enjoy each session. In my experience, the more tricks you know how to do, the easier it is to learn how to ollie. Most people don't learn to ollie in two or three days. They learn for months. Skateboarding is very compounding. The more you know, the easier everything is. Nothing is easy. And ollies still might take months. But, they'll definitely be easier to learn if you know tons of other things. I learned a ton of freestyle tricks, and then street tricks (which I tried a few times at the beginning out of curiosity and failed at) came really quickly. So, I think all these tricks are important (obviously since I made the video 😂) But thanks for the comment! I enjoyed reading it. And like I said, I don't disagree with it, but we do have different perspectives :)

    • @Lawliet82
      @Lawliet82 Před 3 lety

      @@SarahParkMatott it seems like everyone has a complete different approach on skateboard!
      at the very end, if we all stick with it, we all can learn everything
      but the way to get there is different for everyone and that is just really amazing
      but maybe i got your point tho, learning how to ollie for me was easy maybe becuz when i tried to learn i already knew how to shove it and i was really comfy in riding my skateboard
      what i did not say is that it took me months to learn the shove its lol
      it took me about... idk maybe 4 - 5 months to learn that, and i would ride not all but most of the weekend days, so like, each month has about 8 weekend days and i would go skate about 5 of these days maybe?
      so yeah, for most people this long just to learn the shove it would be super frustrating and they would quit, i did not do that, i just kept trying no matter how hard it was, no matter how many time i would spend there i would just keep trying and trying and i did it!
      but i know most people won't do that
      so then comes your video, which helps these people to not quit and learn other things that are not these kind of tricks

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  Před 3 lety +1

      I totally agree! The path and approach to skateboarding can be so different. And I think that's part of why I love it. I tried to skate as a kid and was horrible. I couldn't shove it even after years and eventually gave up. But, I started last year as an adult again and was able to shove it within a few months because I started with freestyle skating and was really really comfortable on the board. That's part of the reason why I made this channel. I really want to encourage other ways to learn skateboarding and help motivate people not to quit. And like you said, you were skating on weekends. So, I bet getting those first few tricks was difficult. But, I'm glad you pushed through! Skating is literally the best!! :D

      @Hendrixski Před 3 lety

      Yeah man, the most important thing is to have fun. I see people at skateparks trying to ollie but they can't even ride yet. They're throwing their boards, they're yelling. Nah man. Just getting more comfortable on your board will really help, like riding around and doing tic tacs and pivots. One thing you can try for this in particular would be standing behind the board and jumping up onto it. If you can jump up on the board and off a ton of times, it will help you build confidence jumping onto it while flipping the board. 😃 Hippies jumps help in a similar way, just getting used to jumping over the bolts of the deck.
