An in depth look at the ollie. 5 steps that can take you from no ollie to a solid one and an explanation of ollie timing. Each step exercises a foundational aspect of the ollie that you will later be able to use when putting the ollie together.
I came up with this method to help new skaters learn to ollie easier. And I used it to learn switch ollies/nollies. It really worked for me, and I think it can work for you too!

Hello! Someone pointed out that I reversed the written stances at 3:05. The visual is correct, but it should be left foot front in regular stance and right foot front in goofy stance. (I think that I was going to write back foot and got them mixed up.
I hate using left and right when talking about stances in general because I think it’s confusing for a lot of people. You’ll mostly see “front foot” and “back foot” in my content 😂
Still, hope you enjoyed the video! Happy Ollie-ing
How do I get high Ollie’s while pushing my foot though because when I try to push my foot it only gets an inch off the ground
@@opgamer9296 Hours and hours and months of practice is the real answer. Ollies suck because it takes a lot of time and phases to work through in order to get our bodies to do what they need to/be strong enough to do what they need to etc. So many things (touching the tail to the ground when popping, not bringing the back foot up, not actually pushing the nose forward, not bringing the front foot up to the nose at all--only the bolts etc) can all shorten the height of the ollie..so, it's hard to know. Often it's just needing more time to get our body to do what the brain knows it needs to...
@@SarahParkMatott thank you! I will practice more ollies after I can land the shuv it on concrete and not grass
@@opgamer9296 you’ll get it. It really just takes a grossly long time 💪💪
Sarah's channel is definitely the best skateboarding tutorial channel on CZcams! She mentions the small little details that other tutorial missed ... And she breaks down each steps into small exercises which definitely makes it a lot easier for learning!
Love this channel, keep it up Sarah!! Thanks!!! :)
Thank you so much Michelle! I'm stoked you're enjoying the tutorials so much 😃💪 I'll keep doing my best 🙋♀️
I started skateboarding when I was 10 but gave up pretty quickly, in part because I could never figure out ollies on my own...
Now I'm giving it another go at 34, and with the help of this vid I landed my first one last week! Your channel's the best, Sarah 🤘
ahhh congratulations! That's awesome 😃 glad you came back to skate again
Not gonna lie, I’m so glad I found this channel. I’ve been struggling with my ollies for a few months now, and out of all the tutorials I’ve seen I feel like this is the best and most detailed out there. I can’t believe you’re so underrated! Thank you so much for this video :)
Thank you!! I’m so glad you’ve found this tutorial helpful 😃 Ollies are wildly difficult, so I am always stoked if my tutorial helps! Good luck practicing💪
why would you lie?
So true
The extra steps you added would have helped cut my learning time in half this is epic. The way you break the tricks down is down right epic
Thank you!! 🙏 so happy to hear that. 😃
This is a refreshing approach to the ollie. I have been practicing the hippie jump while sucking my knees up and got comfortable with that. The pop to caveman exercise seems to be exactly what I need to practice. Thanks for the great tips!
That’s awesome to hear! I’m glad you liked the video. I hope the exercise helps to get you closer to an ollie! Good luck! 💪
Omgsh! I was gonna give up skateboarding because i think i will never be brave enough to ollie on the flat ground. But then I watched your tutorial and I made it! Today, i tried to ollie on the concrete by following your tutorial. It builds a lot of confidence in me. Pls don’t stop making videos. It helps us, beginners a lot!
Well, I am so glad you’re not going to give up if you want to learn!! I’m stoked this video was helpful and helped you get more confidence!!💪💪 I’ll definitely keep making more!
I’m an engineer, and I very much so enjoy your technical approach to skateboarding. Ollies make much more sense to me explained using simple physics. Probably my favorite skateboarding channel
Sarah, THANK you for this! So helpful. I'm a timid learner and these smaller steps are SO helpful! thank you!
Hi Joe! I’m glad to hear these steps are helpful. That’s pretty much exactly the reason I tried to break it down farther. I’m a timid learner too. I like more steps😄
Oh, thank you very much! This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm 42 and right now I'm back on the board like I was at 13 to do an Ollie!)
Is this the best ollie tutorial on youtube? it is.
Keep the awesome work up, I've been struggling with ollies for a bit and all the tutorials are the same, getting me nowhere, this is exactly what I needed, and I bet many skaters do too.
You do a good job at explaining and editing, and are very relaxin to listen to, this channel is going places :)
Thank you!🙏 I am stoked to hear that! I really wanted to give skaters a different perspective of learning the ollie. So, I’m happy to hear all this! I’ll keep working hard to make more and better videos :)
I've just landed my first ollie today using this progression! Keep up the great work, Sarah!
ahh that's awesome! Stoked to hear that! Keep shredding 💪
I think your approach to skating is very methodical and breaks things down into their components. I’ve now been skating a year now at 56 years old and loving it and I skate transition and surf skating the most. I really want to get my Ollie sorted so I’m going to try this approach. Keep up the good work, I love your stuff.
haha I would definitely call it methodical too 😂 But thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the content. Hope that the method helps you get closer to the ollie 😃💪
Aaron does a great job but wow, this is concise. I’m gonna practice this and hopefully get this down in a couple weeks.
Thank you!🙏 I am glad to hear you liked it. Good luck working on your ollie!! 💪
The best teacher is the one who just went trough the struggles off learning in my opinion
Love your method steps, i agree that a lot of tutorials seems to miss steps. Something i have found when I'm teaching friends is having them pop the tail and land on the board without doing the whole front foot slid. kinda like a hippy jump with a pop. This helps get that ankle muscle memory without worrying about the whole front foot mess yet.
That's great advice. I know exactly what you mean because I actually considered that for this method in the beginning. I did it quite a few times, but the only reason I didn't recommend it to a general audience is that it did seem a bit difficult with a chance of slipping. Even I slipped once. I would totally recommend it to someone who was really good at riding already though and super comfortable jumping on their board! 😃💪
Sarah, you rocked the explanations, congratulations!
This tutorial is sooo damn underrated 🔥🔥
Me: auto subscribe
Haha thank you! I’m really glad you liked the tutorial😃👊
Absolutely one of the best Ollie tutorials I’ve seen, and different! Great video 👏🏾
Thank you! Glad you liked it! :D
This is the Greatest Ollie video on CZcams, the breakdown of every step is so precise
great video as usual!
Very true about really pushing the front foot forward. My ollie got WAY better last year when i was trying to learn "ollie norths". It made me realize how far you can push your foot forward before it goes past the nose, and how much more effective it is to fling your foot loosely, and straight, into your nose. It also helps me to watch my front foot. The back one just has to pop hard, so focusing on my front foot seemed to really help me understand what was happening with each ollie.
After idk how many years, I've finally gotten the hang of rolling ollies. Now I'm trying to get more height and your video is so helpful. The pop tip was such an eye-opener. Thanks so much for this
Yes, it's always in the small details in skating. I hope it helps with getting more height!! 💪 I'm glad you liked the video! 😃
Hello! Today I landed my 1st Ollie! I’ve been following all of your steps and it feels great to finally land. You’re the best Sarah!
ahh that's awesome! Congrats Carlos! All your hard work is starting to pay off 🙌
Wow, great tutorial! Really glad to have some intermediate steps to practice while I give my poor knees a break from jumping so much.
Today at the skatepark I realized how bad I am at popping my board with my back foot. When I first tried it, my board would go every which way, and it took me a while to get a clean pop that I could catch!
Yes 🙌 go easy on the knees. I learned that lesson the hard way 😂
But I’m glad you liked those steps! It’s wild how sometimes breaking those steps up you can really work on tiny details that you might not have realized need work 😂 keep shredding 💪
bro it's so frustrating when you try to pick up your board but your pop is so bad that it just goes wherever
One tip i've learned is to pop with your toes at the center of the tail. I used to pop more toward the toe side of the tail (the pocket), and it made my board spin a little backside and didn't pop as hard. I'd say put it in the center of the tail, and work on popping straight down, hard (with bent legs) and don't try to do huge ollies until you can do relaxed, smaller ones. I too had to learn to pop my tail consistently before i could even worry about leveling the board out more fully.
Amazing tutorial!!!
Thank you! I love your channel!
nice job ! thanks !!
This is probably the best ollie tutorial out there

It’s a helpful video~ thank u
This tutorial is really helpful and detailed. Keep it up!!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it! 😄
So helpful. What I’ve noticed with all your videos is that you always mention a tip that others over look in their tutorial videos. It’s like the missing link I need, thank you.
ah, thank you! Those missing links are pretty much why I started this channel 😂 I would be like "huh..I wish someone told me that" and decided to start sharing it myself haha
mate, this was a fantastic breakdown. thank you so much!!!!!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked the break down so much 😃🙏
This is a top shelf tutorial 👏👏👏

I love your approach, it’s great how you break the mechanics down into individual practical steps and them overlay them to show the sequence of actions as one seamless motion. Great work Sarah!

beautifully explained, slowly and patiently ;) I have watched many videos, but this one is definitely the most comprehensive one I have seen so far. Now for the rain to stop, so I can practice again!

Cant wait for an in depth moving ollie tutorial!
Glad to see your subscribers are growing!
Reahc for.30,000!
Thanks! 🙏 This tutorial in particular I didn’t want to rush into. Wanted to add a new perspective to the YT mix. Same with the moving ollie! I’ll keep analyzing it and getting confident so that I can make a helpful one in the future. Thanks for sticking around! 🙃
This is an awesome and well put together guide, think this will do the trick on getting my first ollie. Rock on!
Love the deck as well
Yo, I’m so glad to hear that! I wish you all the best with your ollies! Hope this helps 😄🤘
brilliant! Going to start working on my nollie today!
Yes! That’s awesome. I used this method to learn switch ollies too 😃
AWESOME ! tutorial really made alot of sense great method
thank you! Glad you liked it.
Probably the best detail tutorial on how to Ollie. Really enjoyed watching and learning from these methods.
Thank you so much 😃 I'm really glad you liked the tutorial and methods! 💪
Loving your knowledge sharing! Struggling with ollie for more than a year.... Your creative steps and methods really help me a lot! Also glad that I’m probably similar size with you, loving all of your tutorials, they work on me pretty well. Hope to see more! And have to shout it loud: THANK YOU SO MUCH SARAH!
Thank you Hui-Wen! The ollie is seriously difficult to get! But you can definitely do it 💪💪 I’m really glad you like my tutorials too! I’ll keep trying to make more😃
Great method on how to Ollie Sarah. And great video editing as well.
Ah thank you 🙏😃
Of all the tutorials on the Ollie, hands down, your video is the best. You are a far superior teacher. Your teaching method is infinitely far superior. It’s more technical and less flash and spectacle. Don’t defer to Braille, while AK is great for some things, he’s “spectacle” and less information. Just saying “first try!!!!” Is great for affirmation it’s not helping people who really want to learn the techniques. Why you don’t have as many subscribers as Braille is an injustice but I’m glad I found your channel. Thank you.
Well, thank you! I'm really stoked the you enjoyed this method and how I tried to teach the ollie. This approach is definitely my style. I love to break things down, look for the physics if I can and try to find similar movements to work on individual parts of a different trick. It has made a huge difference in my skating, which is why I wanted to share it! So, I am always glad to hear the method resonated with someone! 😃
Great! Thank you! Gonna be on that board tomorrow...
ahh, hope you have fun 💪
The best tutorial of timing!
Thank you 😃😃
Best ollie vid from the last 30 I've seen! Very good breakdown
Thank you🙏🙏💪
I'll give this method a try. Nice work
Hope it helps and you can have fun with it💪
This is amazing!! I'm gonna try this tonight when I go to the skate park c:
Really great! I can ollie but love watching tutorial videos anyways. I think this is the best method I've seen.
I still enjoy tutorials of tricks I’ve learned too 😂 And thanks! I’m glad you liked the method!
Best tutorial hands down 🙌 can't wait to practice my ollies later on.
You got this! 💪
This video is the best ollie tutorial I ever seen. Thank U, it helped me a lot. ^^
Thank you! 😃 Happy to hear that!
Fantastic
This, along with Dale Decker & Jake Hayes' videos on ollies are probably the best trick tip videos to watch for learning ollies & polishing them to a high level. I'm working on improving my switch ollies & will be practicing the steps in this video. Great vid.
Glad you liked the video! Have fun polishing up your switch ollies :D I actually tested this method by working on my switch ollie to make sure it was helpful haha
Thank you for your explanations.
From tutorials, I look at some points of my weaknesses that can be fixed.
Some new routines can improve muscle memory.
Thank you! I hope the video was helpful. Good luck ollie-ing! :D
I do really like videos like this one.
When PROs explain you how to ollie and all that things, they judge from their perspective of simplicity of everything.
When not a PRO explains how to ollie - she explains it literally how it will go for you because you go through exactly the same fears and mistakes
Wohoo..millions thank sarah.very helpful vid.make aaron kyro proud!
The best tutorial so far 🛹
Thank you! 🙏💪
Thanks Sarah. This all makes sense, especially when you pointed out the back foot never touches the ground! Thank you!
I’m glad that was helpful!! The back foot not touching the ground was something that confused me for a long time too!
