Slayer Camaro - Blown Head Gasket?

- The Slayer Camaro (Danny’s 1969 Chevy Camaro) recently started pushing coolant and we had to find the source of the problem and fix it. Over 3 days, we completely torn down the car to the shortblock and had the cylinder heads re-surfaced, replaced the head gaskets and got it fired right back up again.
The Camaro is powered by a turbo LS with a 6-speed. It has a 78mm Turbonetics turbo feeding a mildly built 5.3L and backed by a Tremec Magnum transmission.

I remember way back in the 70s and 80s , we always bought the Tuned Hooker Headers, and sometimes went with the Hedman Headers. I favored the Hookers .. And favorite Cams were CRANE

Nice! I've been thinking about swapping in a 454 I have and putting a turbo but have never messed with turbo before ( 671 supercharger yes) so I enjoyed see somewhat how a turbo would look in my 69 camaro.
What did you find was the problem? Blown head gasket I assume? I was surprised how straightforward this process was! Nothing like a simple, clean and functional install! 👌
Next project is a Chevy with a fiberglass kit car body, might have to do a turbo rig like this to get a little extra smoke out of those tires. What a beast!

That is easily the cleanest simplest turbo install I have ever seen, most look like a plumbers nightmare.

Engine Masters did a comparison and the "truck" or "cathedral" heads make great torque but fall on their face as rpms increase. You have a turbo so you have tons of torque. You need to go back and watch this year's Engine Masters or talk to Dulcich, he was there. Btw Liv you are in perfect shape. :)
Torque spec = 1/8 turn before it snaps. 💪😎

Retorqe heads cause aluminum just needs it, also a boosted engine will go though coolant it should always be check just like oil an trans before driving 😎💯✌an also she knows how to start the machine she is a keeper...
We always used the copper coat on the Chevy big blocks with the .020 steel gaskets
even as a turbo set up your head gasket replacement was easier than the head gasket replacment on my 6.0 LS2 in my holden SS (pontiac G8) i had all kinds of stuff in the way for example power brakes aircon compressor fire wall inner frame rails etc and welded exaust that could only be flopped aside
i use the copper spray as its tacky and sorta sticks the gaskets

Nice clean engine
I've used the copper spray on a 22R Toyota truck engine after the head gasket blew. It ran great for years after that. I can't speak for racing engines.

LS and just one turbo. There's two in the future there. That will be a blast to drive. What cam, injectors, fuel and fuel pump????? Run E85 in it and hang on.

Cometic mls? Boost running? I run an amc 258, ross 7,5 blower pistons, blow thru 750 holly modified, crower cam lifters and spring from old 7000 plus line with custom grind. No intercooler at present and without water injection for now. 42 psi manifold pressure 100 ll fuel... Home built 904 with reverse pattern manual valve body. All in a customized 86 concrd 2 door. Pearl white with twin cherry mica racing stripes. Been asked many times what it is, as most nt familiar w amc. Times aren't great but 134mph shows some potential. Never had a problem with felpro comp gaskt and not a brken ring. I know lots say don't run av gas but 100ll has 4 times tel that sunoco 260 (102 octane) had back before leaded gases demise. Lead was decrease to make it 100ll, but the old nam was 100/130 octane referring to lean /rich mixture.

The induction systems on modern engines are an ABOMINATION in the looks dept. No subjectivity on my part either, just a FACT, and the fact _is_ ugly is UGLY. I still love ya, Liv. 🙂
Copper seal gives you casket a much better seal than gaskets alone. There's a reason why even race car engine builders use it.
You need to tighten up that spark gap to 24 - 28. Once you start getting above 10 lbs of boost, you may start to experience spark blow out and it will break up really bad in the high rpm range. I speak from experience. Plus if you are still using the factory recommended plug, you need to pick a colder plug.

The copper spray has its place but, it's not on head gaskets.
*truck is the best stock manifold other than TBSS and close to LS3 according to Westech

Hey Danny what size is the turbo u have on the slayer and your cooling system is it a kit or u piece it together?
Hey I'm running a 78mm turbonetics. It's pretty outdated, but I'm going to keep running it until it comes apart. The cooling system is completely custom. I recommend using a huge radiator with good fan CFM. 👍

I was going to say that in 50 years of automotive repair I have only once seen an old style Chevy V-8 blow a head gasket. (whoev er replaced it before didnt adequately scrape the old gasket and laid a new one over it)
Then I saw this was a POS LS engine and it immediately became obvious why it blew.

Question will a 350 turbo be strong enough for 400 SBC ??
Maybe a very tired 400. But even a low compression 400 makes a lot of low end torque. The th350 is gonna want more revs to make plenty of line pressure. Id use a 400 trans unless you wanna spend big bucks building your th350

Pull the oil dipstick first and see if oil is chocolate milk if it is that's a head gasket

Where is the radiator. Is your methanol injector boost controlled?
It's a rear mount radiator. The methanol come in at 4psi of boost
- You need to get some lavalier clip on microphones for both of you so we can hear what you are saying. 🙂
The secret of the easy start up is fuel injection versus carbs. I know you love your Holleys but carburetors were always the weak link in the internal combustion engine design. Fuel flow to an engine is a very complex thing and carburetors are very simple devices that really can't do a very precise job of fuel metering. They are more of a one size tries to fit all solution. A Holley can be fine-tuned to fit a particular engine if you have a lot of knowledge but it's always going be a compromise between different engine parameters. If the carb is set up for max power it won't work at low rpm etc. It's just the nature of the beast I'm afraid.
