In the early 1990s to late 2000s there was a Brazilian player who was scoring free kicks as easily as taking penalties themselves. As crazy as it seems, nearly half of the almost 200 goals scored Juninhos career were from free kicks.
But as special as Juninho was, compared to the legendary Brazilian footballers of his generation, he just never was able to outshine them -and today he’s only mostly remembered by Brazil and Ligue 1 fans, so now - it’s time we give his career a look and see just how good the free kick king of football was.

As a Lyon fan, it’s so good to see Juninho getting his flowers, he is our biggest legend of the club, he scored 101 goals for the club, some of his free kicks are so legendary like against Barça, it’s sad to see young fans calling Messi or Cristiano the free kicks goats lol
Speaking of which what’s going on with Lyon

What makes juninho special is that he was consist with them from start to finish

he’s definitely an unforgettable player
Is the same here in Brazil, he is one of the most iconic player of Vasco da Gama
Lots of people outside of France and Brazil talk about him.
The guy in the video is full of shit
He is now a commentator in a Brazilian “movement” against the monopoly over football we have been under since forever. TV channels had a HUGE monopoly over streaming rights, but due to the pandemic they f’d up and now we are able to watch some games through CZcams(Most notably the WC games) and he is one of the commentators in this project. His insight over the game and players is impressive and he would call the shots of coaches before they made any, which is insane when you are watching a game and he speaks up like “Number 8 jumped a little bit too late, so he is either tired or unfocused so coach will switch him” and it happens.
Nice.
Sounds like a man of the people in addition to a football genius.
Juninho was also one of the more outspoken critics of Bolsonaro which I have to respect him for
It’s so good to see the “Reizinho da Colina” - as we call him in Vasco da Gama - finally getting some recognition for his unmatchable free kick skills!

Such as Ademir da Guia, Alex, Edmundo, Marcelinho Carioca, Djalminha and many more.
Crazy how many good freekick takers Brazil had in that era, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos etc, and of the course Juninho as the best of the lot
Exactly yes! I remember. His accuracy was mindblowing.
Raymar - respect bro... people slept on Juninho. An excellent midfield artists with a deadly free kick... the game was easy for him. Used to luv watching him dominate with Lyon, a real joy to watch and a true football legend. Chapeau. Such a shame he missed the W Cup.

Watching him play was like knowing Lyon had a 1 goal advantage going into the match.
And the team knew that, which I think was one of key reasons the Lyon was so successful back then.

Simply the best to ever play free kicks🙌🙌🙌
Remember sporadically watching Lyon games in the Champions League. Whenever i would watch free kicks with legendary players i would think they would not even hit the target. Only got two stand out out moments for me where they actually hit it, one with Beckham against Greece, CR7 against Spain but forever reason whenever Juninho stepped up it would always be a goal and that was something truly spectacular. Almost feel like i was just lucky catching those games but it seemed to almost happen weekly how i remember it.
as an arsenal fan there is no doubt he's the best I've ever seen and I'm almost 35 seen the man score free kicks from more than 40 yards no problem and this wasn't a 1 time thing what a legend
A truly masterful player.
I used to watch the matches he’s playing in to wait for his free kicks. Juninho is the greatest free kick taker ever in football. ❤
If you're playing against Juninho, the penalty box suddenly became much bigger. He didn't shoot, he dragged and dropped the ball wherever he damn well pleased with a cursor. To this day, I doubt there's a dead ball specialist as lethal as he was
easily he was the greatest at what he did
Juninho might just be the most underrated player of all time🤯

He was the greatest free kick taker of all time. There is no doubt about it.
As a Sport Recife fan, it's really nice to see Juninho receiving the recognition he deserves.
The physics of the ball and the un-neuering goalkeepings and his massive power shots.
As a free kick junkie and a Nottingham Forest supporter, I'd always wished that he would have played for us at some stage in his career. Obviously known for his phenomenal free kick accuracy but he was also an extremely skilled midfielder.
Juninho broke my heart as a kid, he'd always take out Real Madrid galacticos with his free kicks & they'd despair at any free kick we'd concede in our half.
Yeah Dud...it was funny to see the fear in the faces of the other teams's supporters when a foul happened LOOOOOOOOOOL
Just the best and most consistent freekick taker and I used to enjoy his bullet freekicks especially at Lyon with teammates like Micheal Essien

I was saying this forever. Juninho is literally God of free kicks.
Free kick maestro ❤
He made Lyon a tactical beauty... opposition teams were afraid of fouling anyone on their own half so the opposition teams usually ended up either trying to pressure high up and leaving a massive gap behind or with a rather low block that kept them at bay. Nowadays the closest thing to this level of effectiveness on freekicks would be Messi, but even Messi can't match how much of a cheat code Juninho was. Not only this, but he was pretty good dribbler and passer so if you didn't come out to try to take the ball from him, he would dribble past the opposition and make a goal. Go out and try to get the ball from him and you'll foul him as he was tricky with the dribble... it was basically a long distance penalty LOL. He was and remains unique to this day, I haven't seen many players optimize their skills to their favor in such a way in a long while.
On top of all that, the guy was a leader on the pitch and had a never say die attitude. Opposing goalkeepers knew damn well the threat he posed on free kicks and were all very nervous whenever he took one.
He was the engine of the miedfield. It was SO GOOD to have him playing on your team, he was the SECURITY GUY! Almost never did a bad game....so constant....
About free kicks, there is no other skill in football with such a huge difference between the best and the second one, this guy was, is, and will be the god of free kicks
It's always surprised me how Juninho is rarely counted among the great players of the 2000s. Maybe it's because he only played one world cup (2006), or because his European career was all in France (even then seldom counted among the greatest leagues), but he deserved more recognition. It was with him as one of the team's leaders that Lyon had what was possibly its golden age, winning 7 consecutive Ligue 1 titles.
imagine if he was playing today he’d have so much hype

I remember when i watched an interview with him in 2006 when he explained the way he usually kick the ball. Pretty unusual, with the side of the feet. I guess this required a lot of training to get that power in the shot, that many players couldn'd do it.

Was he also omitted from 2006 World Cup, so if he truly was there, France 1:0 win wouldn’t have really kicked them out/
His competition were insane at the time (Ronaldinho, Kaká, Rivaldo, Zé Roberto, Ricardinho, Alex, all legendary brazilian miedfielders of that rich generation). The other players had more media on them as well, so the brazilian coach never let Juninho be the starter (altough everytime he went to the field he did great jobs and I think he never missed a Free Kick for Brazil National Team, when he enters the game, if there were a Free Kick he scored).
