I think the reason Rui Costa isn't remembered that much, is that he always put the glory of his clubs above his own glory. Working hard and becoming the best he could to serve his clubs, rather than doing it for his own fame and fortune. I love players who show this much dedication to their clubs. Rui Costa isn't just a legendary player, but a legend of a human as well.
I'd say he was similar to someone like a Carrick who's very reserved and puts team over personal achievements
@Alex Max I'd say not remotely similar to Carrick, Carrick is basically a less versatile Milner with better technical ability, Rui Costa was actually immensely more talented than the pair of them but playing alongside, Shevchenko, Seedorf, Kaka amongst others in his career meant he always shared a limelight
But yet Kane gets abuse for staying with Spurs
@@stephentrevis2514 hes still on Spurs cause he failed to leave lmao, he tried multiple times and even forced a transaction but everything failed, he doesnt deserve to be compared with Rui Costa, totti, carrick,Gerard or any other player that REALLY wanted to help their teams and put them above their own careers
@@stephentrevis2514 Kane gets shit cause he stays on an UNSUCCESSFUL Spurs, Rui Costa and AC Milan was a very successful side, he just had more glamorous teammates
Shame how players like him often get forgotten over time
100% I'm sure there's a parallel universe where he took one ballon dor or two
That's because most people are sheep and go with the wind. But the younger generations who haven't watched him play are not to blame because they are very hardly conditioned by "the wind".
Unfortunately the beginning of Messi vs Ronaldo’s era caused too many great players to be over shaded.
Shame how everyone doesn't have the brain capacity to remember everything and every detail that they have seen and witnessed
@@micky100 hate me all you want, messi and ronaldo are the most overrated footballers in history
An additional piece of trivia about his return as a player to Benfica: Knowing the club lacked the financial strength to pay for his wages, he agreed to sign the contract without negotiating his wage at all, leaving total freedom for the club to decide how much he would earn.
All he wanted was to play for his club one last time, and he wouldn't put a price on it.
A very honorable man
My club has a player who stayed with us for 14 years, we got relegated and everybody was sure he was done but he played on his 38 better then any other defender. Now we got promoted and he signed for another year. Everybody loves him and i cant imagine not having someone like him in our team but i think this is his last season. I love people like Rui Costa and Francesco Totti

@@JoaoPedroPT696 Rui COSTA foi o maior antes a chegada do C.RONALDO no jogo.
E Antes o RUI COSTA foram O Karel POBORSKY e o Paulo SOUSA, e o Diego MARADONA com certeza.
Growing up as a Nigerian kid in that era, we had no access to live matches, but i always catch-up with Italian Serie A highlight just to watch Manuel Rui Costa.... He was such a delight to watch. To me, he is the best European playmaker ever
that ending part with him being president of benfica gave me chills... what a player he was
As a Fiorentina fan Batistuta and Rui Costa were before my era but my dad's generation talk about the two like gods, the stadium was packed in those days to the point where people would sit on the stairs. The Artemio Franchi and the city of Florence were at their golden age, even now whenever Rui Costa or Batistuta attend our matches its unbelievable. Rui Costa was a legend, and Florence will forever call him one of our best.
I am a FC Porto fan , but i loved the Rui Costa / Batistuta era , that was one of my favourite team back then , just because of them both . Costa was a genius on the midfield .
As a AS Roma supporter of a certain age (47) i still regard Rui Costa one of the best of all time in the role
Don’t forget it was Faith Terim who developed Rui Costa and made him better in Fiorentina and him that got him to AC Milan and got Fiorentina to the Coppa Italia final
He will always be known as Imperatore
Dude, how come you left ViolaNation? You don't comment anymore. 😞
Fiorentina having Batistuta - Rui Costa - Toldo is like a modern mid-level club having Lewandowski - De Bruyne - Neuer in their roster. They could go to any club they want but still choose to stay for the love of the club. In their time they play with Sandro Cois, Jorg Heinrich , Luis Oliveira, Tomas Repka, with all due respect, those are names that wont be remembered except you're fan of Fiorentina. Thats why Bati and Costa gain much respect in their time
Rui Costa and Roberto Donadoni - 2 of Milan's best midfielders ever, yet 2 of the most underrated compared with Kaka, Pirlo, Gullit, Seedorf etc.
lol stop exaggerating, those are good.. but Kaka, Gullit, Pirlo are different bread, these guys belong to the elite legendary midfield with the like of Iniesta, Zidane, Xavi, Modric, Gerrard, etc
@@notyourmom697 snuck gerrard in there like we wouldn’t notice
Donadoni was a monster
@@sweatyhaggis4303 yeah gerrard is far above them tbh
I would agree about Rui Costa, but Donadoni just not in the same level, sorry. Had his chances on National team but unfortunately didn't succeed to be mention next to those names
My favourite player ever. Elegant, intelligent, brilliant. His long passes destroyed so many defences. Rui Costa was a genius.
Somehow I've never thought this way of Rui Costa and this documentary made me cry ... what a Legend!
I thought it was only me :P
As some one who watched Serie A religiously in the early 2000's, it hurts me that the new generation doesn't know about this legend, he's one of the most elegant players I have ever seen. On that note I also remember Alvaro Recoba at Inter Milan was also magical.
Rui Costa is an icon on Fifa,so new Gen meet him but sadly his card isnt great like should be
2000s*
22 players in a match Rui was outstanding he seemed to gracefully glide over the pitch there was nobody else better than him 20 years ago he was magnificent ☘️☘️
His elegance reminds me of Sócrates from Brazil in the world championship 82. It's the same type of player
Recoba and Adriano are inter beast foward
No Milan fan can forgets abour Rui Costa. He was a MONSTER. Only reason why he isn't talked about even more by Milan fans is because he played half his tanure alongside Kaka.
I saw him playing and there is no way that he's better than Zidane
@@Adilulph he can give tough levels to Zidane he's good
The main reason he isn't talked about is that he was slightly above average. But spent his Milan career playing in a team full of actual stars ergo his play was elevated by circumstance.
@@jimbo_1312 lol,children
@@jimbo_1312 heh? He played for Fiorentina and was great there as well. Even Boban said and i quote "i am happy to leave Milan now that Rui Costa will be getting my number 10"

I will never forget his assist to Sheva against Real Madrid. He's never forgotten in Milano ❤️🖤
I remember watching Rui Costa alongside Batistuta, Edmundo and Toldo, back in the 90s, with Fiorentina. Magical player, playing in what was a magical time in Italian football.
That was my childhood. Costa was class
I didn't follow Fiorentina, but I had this doubt, did he play with Edmundo, or the Brazilian had already returned ?
@@fmac6441 sorry, you're right - Edmundo had already left by that point. It's been 30 years, you'll have to forgive my mind wandering!
@@neilmartin7776 It wasn't a correction, I was in doubt too.
I think Edmundo came back around the same time as Romário, when the Brazilian currency was artificially high and our clubs were able to repatriate players at their peak.
@@fmac6441 I remember watching Edmundo in that Fiorentina side, early 90s I think. Absolute beast of a player, strong and quick, but very temperamental. Another criminally forgotten player more people should remember.
It's always unfortunate to see great talents fade into obscurity over time, but it's even more so when the player in question is also such a likeable person. I always used to play as Milan when playing FIFA 2005 and him and Inzaghi were my favourites of that team. However, the moment that I really understood what an amazing legend Rui Costa is, was when my younger brother went on trial at Benfica in the summer of 2014. My family is part Portuguese part Dutch, but we've always lived in the Netherlands and so my little bro and I never learned to speak Portuguese fluently. My brother played for Ajax before and after showing promise on that summer trial in Lisbon, Benfica TV wanted to do an interview with him for a news item about foreign youth players. There was just one problem... my brother didn't speak Portuguese and the interviewer didn't speak English. Luckily president Rui Costa was in attendance, as he was watching the training session. When he saw my brother was struggling with his Portuguese, he jumped in and started doing the interview in English instead! I couldn't believe what was happening in front of me. Club legend and president Rui Costa was being so welcoming and helpful to my little brother and I will never forget that. He's so not just a football legend. He's a great human being. The best part is that my brother didn't even recognize Rui Costa at that very moment. He was so nervous and glad that someone helped him out, that it just hadn't occurred to him who he was talking to. Can't really blame him, because this happening isn't really something you'd expect at all. When the interview was done, my mom (who does speak Portuguese) went on to thank Rui Costa for being so kind. She then told my brother what had happened and he couldn't believe it. It really showed the selflessness of Rui Costa. He just wants the best for the club and every player playing there. He deserves to be remembered for his footballing talents, but even more for his class. Great video on a great man!
Thanks for sharing your story, more respect for him as human being.
nice story mate, i also am half dutch half just played at portimonense pt :D

Legendary Rui Costa. But I'm wondering how he learned to speak English
@@opetimistic I guess he learned it in school. Most of my dads Portuguese friends are of the same age and can speak English pretty well. It's still one of the main world languages after all.

Lol. He just wanted to leave no matter what. Benfica cancelled the already agreed transfer to Barcelona and Rui Costa came out to the press to talk bad about Benfica not letting him go and that he didn’t want to have his “legs cut”. He said a few years later he never talked to the then Benfica’s president again after he ruined his opportunity to go to Barcelona.
O Rui Costa não foi esquecido e nunca será. Fez história como jogador e transformou o clube como presidente, é enorme!

Doesn't matter how many times I hear his story, it always makes me emotional. Rui Costa is a living legend, no benfiquista can forget what he did to return home and the great things he did for the club as a player, director and, now, president.
I never forgot about him. My father and I never missed a Fiorentina or AC Milan game when he was playing. Obrigado Rui Costa pelas muitas boas recordações que nos proporcionou. gostaria que meu pai ainda estivesse vivo para lembrar daqueles dias.
I loved Rui Costa when he played for us even without knowing all this, and I was surprised when we let him go for free after spending 42Mil on him but goddamnit he deserved that and more, and now I love him even more
I'm not a Benfica fan, quite the opposite actually, but Rui Costa is a legendary player and not underrated or forgotten at all, both for club and country, in Portugal everyone has a lot of respect for him for some reason or another, of course there's always club rivalries in between but nobody can deny what he did for our football. Now he's Benfica's president and that just shows how dedicated he is to the club. As for the National Team, that screamer in euro 2004 against England will always be on my mind! Good times, our midfield was the Magician and the Maestro!
Also he has now won liga portugal as a president

Can we give some respect to AC Milan for releasing him of his contract. And to Costa for having some club loyalty. I long of young people miss that.

As a life long Milan fan I loved this guy so much. Pure class! Recently, Galliani (the former VP of AC Milan for 33 years) spoke about an episode with Rui Costa. When Kaka arrived from Brasil to Milan, he told Galliani; I am leaving the club, he is stronger than me ( meaning Kaka in his first few months at Milan as an unknown player).
