I remember when Romario came back at PSV a week late from a break, just before the important European match against AEK Athens. The journalists were all over him. In a tv interview he just said:"I'm sorry. I'll score three goals against AEK". And he did just that, he scored a hattrick.

I'm from Barcelona. My father had a friend who used to work for FC Barcelona 90's era, on a role of "chico para todo". Probably the most accurate translation would be someone who is always available to solve different situations and issues that players could got anytime. A kind of "The Wolf" from Pulp Fiction. From now we're gonna call this guy like that. I had memories from childhood that he always carried a pager from those times or "beeper". He was doing a good money for that work, but it was a hard one. He had to be available almost 24/7 for the club. And now here it comes the fun fact. On the middle of the midnight, quite often he was called upon to manage this situation: Romario was spotted dancing and partying at Silvi's, one of the most famous nightclubs in Castelldefels, a suburban coast town nearby Barcelona. "The Wolf" had a mission. To pick-up Romario from the nightclub at 5 a.m. and put it straight away not to Romario's place, but to Princesa Sofia hotel (it's literally the closest hotel to Camp Nou, just few steps away from the stadium). There, the club always have been a permanent room available for this kind of "situations". The very next morning, the team probably had a light workouts and match management before lunch, meanwhile Romario was sleeping and recovering himself from last night. Johan Cruyff was the manager of the club those times (season 93/94). He was very aware of this story but he was OK with that. "Only God Forgives" I guess. Then, Romario played on the starting rotation and used to score 2 or 3 goals regularly. Actually he scored plenty of goals that season. He was probably the best player in the world in 1994.

Romário was the reason I quit pursuing a pro football career. As a junior player in Vasco in the 1980s, I watched him destroy players daily in training and matches. He was just a teenager and unstoppable. Vasco defenders said he had springs on his knees. His ability to dribble at speed with his lower center of gravity was unreal. Then he would stop in front of the goalkeeper and just pass the ball into the net. Forget stealing the ball from him, defenders couldn't even foul him. I could train 24 hours per day, daily, and never get close to what he did routinely. Geniuses are indeed rare.

The hardest way to play football is to make it the simple way by Johan Cruyff.
If you say Messi do not play like brazilian player with all those tricks move and somehow you say messi can not be great.
Then see what cruyff said about it and many legends of the game with the same mind.
Is more difficult to play a simple football than those tricks you talking about.
What i mean is that Messi with speed body faint or just a simple move of the leg body or even your eyes to make enemy go fall or get pass is more difficult rather than tricks move.
If you are or happen to play the game (football) then you will understand how hard it is to make it work in the game especially in high professional player level.
I am not a messi fanboy but what is true is tru what is wrong is wrong...

How about Jorge Gonzalez? The most talented football player to come out from the Concacaf region to this day. Few people know about him to this day and he hardly trained. He almost scored the best goal of the 1982 World Cup tournament by leaving 4 belgian players in the dust (Belgium were european runners up at that time ) and knocked Mexico from going to the 1982 world cup despite having Hugo Sanchez (Mexicos best footballer of all time) on the mexican squad on his prime. that story is kinda fake btw, I didn't have the time to explained it in the video but a lot of pages claim Cruyff allowed him after 20 minutes, not true, not only did Cruyff not say that he let him leave mid match in his original story but Romário never even scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of a match for Barcelona, so Cruyff exagerated that. I think the actual match was the one vs Zaragoza in February 1994 and even then, well 6 days later he was already back in Barcelona, so he either hurried to get back from the Carnival or maybe it was never anything to do with the carnival at all, since even Cruyff only said "it must have been the carnival or something" implying that he wasn't sure

Part of being the GOAT is consistency, that’s true, but without taking away earned credit from Ronaldo and Messi neither Romario or Ronaldo at their prime (not the Ronaldo from Madrid era) played surrounded by players with the level of the teams that had Barcelona and Real Madrid (they were fighting for their league titles with 20-30 points of advantage from the third team in the Spanish League).
Also we all know what have done Messi and Ronaldo with their national teams (Messi won one title in the worst World Cup I remember in terms of player level), an important part of all titles Messi won is the team he had in Barcelona, simply the best team ever (and I am Real Madrid fan). I remember all those years when Barcelona and Messi won everything but when played with his national team he almost seemed to be a different player, just a really good one… not the GOAT.
Comparing GOATs, look what did Jordan and the beginning of his career with the Bulls… he didn’t win anything but was one of best players in NBA in terms of personal performance and Messi can not say the same.
