How good was Romário actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Romário who played for Flamengo, Vasco Da Gama, PSV and Barcelona for most of his career, not only one of the greatest strikers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Romário ranks and just how good he actually was.

Romario was possibly the most natural finisher I've ever seen. Toe pokes, volleys, half volleys and one on one's all dispatched with effortless ease. A lethal striker with ice in his veins in front of goal. A joy to watch.

The best attacking duo of the Brazilian national team was Romario + Ronaldo.
      That should be clear.

You were doing well, until you said that Romário was surpassed by Ronaldo. It never was and never will be. Romario's goal average was absurd and with a much weaker generation, he did much more impressive things than Ronaldo.
He won Copa America after 40 years and a World Cup after 24 years. And he didn't have Ronaldinho and Rivaldo with him to do that.
He was 27 times top scorer in his career (including 2 Champions League) against Ronaldo's 7 times.

    • @albertorodriguezfernandez5956

@@RussGustavo Both are awesome, but Ronaldo is definitely in another level than anybody. He had TWICE injuries that would ruin any player. And he came back and won a World Cup. He had to retire at age 34 due to many injuries. Romario had a longer career, score more goals of course. Yes, you are right, Ronaldo had Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Kaka in his prime, Lucio, and so many others. But Romario had Bebeto in his prime, Raí (very underrated) Cafú (probably the best right winger together with Maldini of all time) Mauro Silva (To me, the best defensive midfielder of Brazil's history period) and other great players too. BOTH had great teams, and were stars of those teams. Romario was to me , a legendary player. A truly special Center Forward, someone with a touch of god. And a mentor and a master of Ronaldo, however, Ronaldo went to levels that are worldwide acknowledged, and we will never be able to guess his potential, he had so many injuries, but what we saw was something of once in a lifetime thing. Like Messi.

He also played for Brazil in which most teams would use spoil tactics and foul alot and the copa America in the 80s 90s was a foul every 10 seconds. Brazil vs Argentina. Watch him vs maradona on way to winning copa America. He was a lazy player and came alive when his instinct for a goal was alive but to say he never possessed the attributes is wrong. Trust somebody who spent hours watching starts from guys like Micheal and Ben Johnson and managed to get a walk-on track offer in college. He may not have had the Johnsons' muscle mass, but his technique was the same.

It were the pre-Bosman arrest and pre-Internet times. And despite his Barcelona period Romario played a significant amount of time out of the spotlights of huge amounts of European fans, when playing in Brazil and The Netherlands. PSV was without doubt a leading club in Europe containing household names. But the Dutch league was an invisible thing on TV elsewhere in Europe. Most people could only see Romario on TV if PSV played a European match against their "local" team.
Also stories in the media could break someone more than nowadays. Stories about his private life and lack of dedication didn't help. Nowadays the opinions of the media are challenged by social media and opinions of the public.
I think that when he would have been loyal to a Spanish or Italian team, he would have been a legend.
