It's not always bad news on those engines. I've done quite a few of those engines and saved them. The valves kiss the pistons break the camshaft rocker valve gear and pop the valve collets out. Without bending valves. I've refitted the valve collets and checked cylinders with an air line to prove compression .with out pulling the head. If that's good its game on to check camshaft lobe alignment against the shaft as they are splined or press fit. If good fit new chains and realign pump timing to BMW's new spec/position. You never no!! happy spannering??

BMW claimed to have made improvements during the life of the N47 such that anything made after 3/2009 should not snap (though could get noisy). B47 started from something like 6/14 (a least in X3) so there must be a lot of these later "safe" N47s about. This one was '57 so an early engine which should have had the free "quality enhancement" which tests/replaces one or both chains. Part of the problem was the crank sprocket which was integral to the crank so nobody is ever going to fix an engine with one of those.

I never understood how they could go from the M47 to this (same with the 6-cylinders) and call it a successor. It's like they fired the entire engineering team and told them the old team got fired for making them too reliable don't make the same mistake...and then as an additional f u they also put the chain on the transmission side making it a huge job to change it. It's almost as if their plan was that these things fail after like 100k mls then making it hard to change it so that the customer gets a big estimate and decides to buy or lease a new model...

Well yeah... I bought an M135i in 2015. Nice car, in fact I loved it. But trying to get a service (oil and filter change) before the service interval was bloody difficult and they spoke to me like I was crazy. The BMW service interval is 24 months. I live in Perth Western Australia and we have 40C+ summers and 0C nights in Winter. I just wanted fresh oil when I bought it as ex-Demo. I think these car manufacturers dont really want people keeping hold of their cars. They would want people to buy new and throw away at 3 or 5 years and get another new one.

To be fair this car has a first generation N47 (177PS in 20d guise) and they were the worst regarding this problem. This was the engine that all the ruckus was about, and what started the lawsuits in England. I've seen those snap as early as just below 100.000km. The design of the parts in the chaindrive and the tensioner was adjusted several times, and the later 184PS version is not as prone.
In the newer B47 engine it's been properly fixed, I haven't heard of anyone snapping a chain in those. I''ve personally measured the chain on a 520d B47 that'd done 300.000km, and that was well within spec.

I believe there were parts revisions occurring right up until 2013, and at that stage the N47 was actually very well sorted.
I actually deliberately picked an n47 over the b47 in my 2014 520d deliberately for this point that at this stage the n47 had it issues addressed, whereas the b47 was brand new and would no doubt have its own set of issues to work through. I have done interim oil changes myself with a good quality full synthetic, but other then consumables my car has has nothing break or need addressing in the 10 years and 120K+ miles on it. It is even on the original battery (albeit with a bit of help from a C Tek charger to recondition once a year).

I'm looking to get a Stage 3 for my 320d N47N - CP4.2 HPFP, Darkside Intercooler and GTB2260v are already here.
My question is: do the B47 solenoid injectors (up to 2000 bars) fit in the N47N (stock are 1800 bar piezo injectors) or do I have to go with the piezo injectors of the 123d/330d n57 (up to 2000 bars).
I don't want to change the high pressure lines (i think needed if I switch to n57 piezo injectors)
Would like to get about 300h.
What do yall think, anyone tried or tested this?
    Thx

I would still like to see this especially on a m47 as I would like to know what they can do, everyone raves about m57’s but no one does the m47. Just curious to know as I have one and blown up two engines. The tuner is known as being a bit dodgy and I’ve had nothing but problems. It’s had new turbo injectors and a front mount intercooler but he has only got 180 ish out of it. But he’s mapped it so it boosts late at about 2400 and raised the limit to 5500

      We have a 2260 turbo kit for the m47 - www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/darkside-developments-gtb2260-turbo-kit-for-bmw-118d-120d-318d-320d-m47-engines.html
We've not had many in though to be fair. If you're just getting a generic flash tune then they tend to not be reliable, that's why we do custom remaps to make sure the car is safe and find any problems with the car without killing it
