    If you're specializing in BMW's maybe it's an opportunity to show the complete process of changing the timing chain on a B47 and other BMW diesels. That way you can show all the problems that can occur. Keep uploading content on a regular base and your channel will exponentially grow throughout the years.

      Hi, thank you, I appreciate your comments! I wanted to keep this video shorter, since I already have 3 detailed videos uploaded explaining bmw/mini timing chain replacement - feel free to check these out on my channel. Since you’re not the first person to mention, I will try to make my next one more detailed.

      @@W15Garage I watched it and it is indeed detailed. I am a DIY mechanic and from my experience it's important to have a lot of tools and experience to cope with problems. It's about the passion and less about saving the money for me. If I was a CZcamsr I would also post short videos about small problems one can experience and the unique or best way to solve it. People want content and as a car guy I always find it interesting to see someone working on their cars.

Was travelling at roughly 40 when it went, but no banging or rattling, thought it may be the electrics or Vanos initially, however cannot manually advance or retard the crank, no start so pretty sure it's one or a number of tc's...Many thanks...

      Yes indeed :)
      The previous guy did a real number on the engine when he changed the timing chain 2 years ago.
      I count 5 stripped screw threads so far, including the 27 mm tensioner screw threads. I had to buy a special helicoil kit from China for that one.
      The Vanos adjuster bolts were overtightened and as a result the vanos adjuster unit metalcover thingy is totally bent. So I bought new adjusters too. And more stuff too.
      Will be fun to see what else I will find before this job is totally done haha.

    Yes, you did not have to take the engine out or crawl under the car with jack stands, major improvement. I would argue that it would have been better to add the whole process (maybe not tightening every bolt) but I am interested in how you do the timing of the timing chain. Did you use the pin tool at the bottom and the bracket on the top? Did you align the fuel sprocket to the mark on the left? These kinds of things would have been great to see and confirm my experience as well. Thanks for the videos and looking forward to the next.

      The N47 engine is renouned for timing chain snapping and swirl flap issues, its not about regular service intervals, its just a bad design that even BMW finally admitted it was. The M47 is the better stronger engine but slightly less powerful. Personally, if you are looking for a BMW stay well away from any that are powered by the N47 unit unless you know for sure the timing chain, tensioners and slippere have been swapped out.

    Does anyone know if it will be repairable or should I scrap it ?

    • @W15Garage
      @W15Garage  Před 3 měsíci

      It’s repairable, cylinder head needs to be removed, damaged valves replaced. Camshafts and carrier may need replacement,but every case is different, you may have only bent valves. Don’t scrap the engine.

    • @W15Garage
      @W15Garage  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Unfortunately it’s marketing…post 2007 bmw mercedes audi Vauxhall Fiat etc adapted this ugly strategy to make more money on parts. For some reason bmw has this bad reputation about timing chains, but other manufacturers suffer from this problem as well. Example mercedes om651 engine, Vauxhall mokka 1.6 engine, fiat panda 1.3 multijet, some audi v6 engines.

      @@mstar011 yes, I’ve seen loose/rattling timing chain at 97.000miles, when my x3 2.0d ORIGINAL chain at 156.000miles was still silent. This is proof that the oil interval recommended by BMW is not right! I personally change my oil at 7000miles ish, and always warm up the engine before I start pushing it harder.

      I bought a brand new Citroen c4 spacetourer full extras and the timing belt snapped 2 and a half years later . With only 87000km on the clock . After arguing with the manufacturer for months I got a new engine under warranty. I sold it ( got rid of it ) 2 months later and I just bought a BMW 525d with the N47 engine. If properly maintained there is no issues and the timing chain gives you a warning tick tick on cold start so you know when to change it .

    i do not believe for a second that this car was doing 70MPH with the engine under considerable load when the chain snapped.. it is an interference engine anw with the RPM it would have been at the engine would have continued to rotate and be out of time and therfore smash the valves...
