  • How NOT to paint OSL on miniatures using the ‪@TheArmyPainter‬ Warpaints FANATIC. Feat. This lady dwarf miniature by ‪@grimskald‬
This is a painting study on painting OSL in a different manner. This is not as easy as the usual and more subtle OSL effects with an airbrush or brush, but this painting was super fun.

I think the initial focus on the value sketching with light and shadow - particularly with some color - was incredibly valuable to demonstrate. I would actually like to see more exploration into the process of the value sketch progressing into the final color scheme. In this case, having it be through a focused, single source OSL was actually pretty accurate when you look at how light would behave in that representation. Also- OSL is really one of the biggest elements that defines display painting from army painting for tabletop. When you look at the best display pieces, they are all using OSL but it might be from multiple sources and/or incorporating a more ambient or diffused source. I think you are a little hard on yourself regarding this piece - it's very good and actually would be a great piece and approach to explore into a more developed final.

This looks like a great way to paint, if your looking for that dramatic effect with high contrast! And like you say at the end, trying different approaches is what keeps the hobby interesting (paraphrasing).

I agree with the back part of the dwarf miniature, the non-metallic details looks good! And the front with the object source lighting is closely matched with the flaming torch.
    Well painted. 👍

Hi Don, I got the complete fanatic set and I painted orc head toppers for all 162 acrylic paints. I noticed for every 6 tried of each Color the last 2 or 3 colors are thicker then the first 3. Have you noticed this? Also what is your ratio you use to thin the thicker fanatic paint? Do you use water or do you prefer to use stabilizer to thin the paint. 2 paint to 1 stabilizer ratio? What do you use?

I got only a handful of colors so far and I was a bit confused as well because Tundra Taupe for example is a lot thicker than the others I got. Good to know that I‘m not the only one noticing that.
