The original owner probably drove it home after the “minor front end accident “ - over heating the whole way - thus blowing the head gasket or cracking the block. SMH.

@@Chief_5 Or a B58 to keep it all BMW. Though I'm pretty sure that would be way more expensive
And make it look like the V8 BMW i8 from Need for Speed Heat, but that’s not something Sam seams to be into doing
Sam, I am a Florida resident, a mechanical engineer, I had the opportunity to work with some very knowledgeable marine power engineer’s, I learned alot about engine design and troubleshooting. Based on watching the video’s I have the following comments;
#1. Cooling is based on volume of cooling flow. You don’t know if you have sufficient cooling circulating thru the engine block. Obviously it is not sufficient since it is overheating. I have done more than average of diesel marine power cooling design. Engine cooling design is not by guessing or luck. A little thermodynamic’s, and high school math, you will know approximately what you need in cooling flow. The rest is engineering of pump selection.
#2. I suggest using your garden hose and circulate water thru the engine thru the main piping connections below the car. On video you have shown these pipes disconnected from the radiator located in the front of the car. Remove the thermostat from the cooling pump assembly. The garden hose and its inherent pressure with the pump should be able to cool the engine no problem. Cool water from hose will pass thru the pipe under the car, thru the engine cooling pump, thru the engine and dump out on the ground from the other pipe under the car. The entire point here is once thru cooling. Does sufficient cooling flow pass thru the engine? You will be able to see the water dumping out of the return pipe onto the ground. Since it is once thru you don’t have to worry about a pressurized cooling system. If the engine over heats you will be able to see limited or no water flow thru the engine. Bingo restriction in the engine somewhere.
This is an indication of lack of water flow. As a point remember you can use a hose to cool a 225 hp outboard engine. It will easily once thru cool the three cylinder engine in the I8. If there is a lack of flow you will know immediately. You will see it.
#3. If you wanted to I have an ultrasonic flow meter. My engineering company specializes in commercial and industrial system testing and troubleshooting. We can put the ultrasonic flow meter transducers on the cooling pipe and directly measure flow. We will immediately see a lack of cooling flow.
#4. The thermodynamic heat rejection of the engine can be easily calculated. We can calculate the approximate cooling flow. Compare the actual flow rate we measure with the ultrasonic meter the heat rejection of the engine.
The problem you are having right now is you don’t have any idea how much cooling fluid is circulating. You are throwing darts backwards over your shoulder at the target. I am not saying the suggestion so far are not good, but you have no idea still what the problem is.
The simple test I am suggesting will be visual and will probably point to a water flow restriction in the engine block.
#5. Using the garden hose and with the thermostat valve out you can switch the hose to the return pipe and flow water backwards thru the engine cooling jacket. You may find doing this dislodges debris and clears blockage in the engine. You would see debris blow out of the other pipe when you back feed it.
#6 You changed the radiator, the thermostat. It is highly unlikely those components are the problem. I basically think a restriction is present.
Remember stay calm when troubleshooting. Stick to basic concepts. You will find the problem. I have been doing troubleshooting of very complex industrial systems for the past thirty years. Believe me this I8 engine is repairable. The problem is basic. Incremental testing is the key. Wild guesses and throwing parts at it will be expensive to get to the solution. You have to engineer the solution.
Regards
Greg
First let me start by commending you for actually keeping your content interesting and completing the repairs before starting a new one. So many other channels start something and keep jumping to other cars never finishing what they started. And secondly I’m sorry to see the damage to the I8 is much more serious than the cooling system. You’re way braver than I am taking that risk. I have been burned so many times when deals that are so good to be true, that now I’m shell shocked. I hope you succeed where others have failed, and without spending too much. But, with that said when you do, you can feel the accomplishment that factory trained technicians gave up and you successfully repaired it without a new engine.

Old CZcams flashbacks intensify
I CALLED IT. SEEN IT BEFORE.
Not on an i3, because I'm too scared to own any BMW (but somehow a Touareg V10 TDI is perfectly acceptable in my book). But anyway, this is actually not unusual on turbocharged German engines that maybe overheated from a loss of coolant in the first place. The cylinder head warps some, but the gasket stays sealed well enough that you don't get a loss of compression, you don't get coolant out the tailpipe as steam, but you DO get exhaust gases into the cooling system, super pressurizing the system and eventually ejecting coolant out of the pressure relief in the reservoir.
Been there more times than I care to count. It's a good idea to see what normal cooling system pressure is like from just some thermal expansion vs the excess pressure you get with a bad headgasket. Can save a world of time in diag if you know how to recognize excess cooling system pressure.

Don’t forget to take out the new thermostat & swap it for the old one before you put that head gasket repair fluid in, remember it will ruin it. 👍
No it wont
I would caution to make sure to read ALL directives from the manufacturer. Personally I prefer to replace the Thermostat anytime a cooling system gets chemically romanced... I agree with the principle Craig Conroy poses of using the old for the chemical exposure risks.
Maybe I am being naive, but wouldn't it be better to replace the head gasket instead of putting something in the engine to try to "repair" the old one? Putting some kind of repair solution in seems like something some fly by night car dealer would do just to make it work, so they can pass the car on...
@@jiminauburn5073 yup. I've never actually seen any of those chemical head gasket repair/ sealer work on anything.

In a way, replacing the engine would have solved the head gasket issue
I think we may still not discovered the full story. We'll see if a gasket replacement will solve the issue.
Of course it would. The mechanic in one of the previous videos literally said " is that the one that was driving around, overheating" word for word. AND HE LAUGHED!! Getting a Modern engine hot briefly, is sketchy. *Driving around, overheating, pretending that it is no big deal* , then trying to reseal the top end is thowing good money, after bad. A five minute combustion gas test would confirm that, but in the interest of content, the attempt at cheap ass, not gonna work, not gonna listen to the smart people, will continue.
Potentially more cost effective too
Told ya it was a head gasket.. it’s common on diesels when the head gasket fails the over flow boils

Thank goodness BMW owners are such good people , the truth is if they don’t share and help each other with these stubborn problems there is no promise that even BMW can figure it out or fix the problem and they will still charge for the time it took them to not resolve the problem. I’ve learned that if you can’t lease a BMW because it’s not affordable or a dealer is just way too far to make maintenance reasonably convenient then a person should just look for a car that they feel is going to make them just as happy to drive . I got a Buick Verano that has the weight , size , power , and features of a BMW 330i that I really like . If you haven’t seen some of the Buick’s that they are making now you should take a look . I never thought I’d like a Buick but WOW! It’s a fun car to drive .

@ 6:35 Special BMW tool for the hose clamps, A pair of pliers. Actually they have the generic spring clamp tool that has a cable with a special end for those hard to reach clamps where you can't get a plier in there but those are right out in the open. A tip for helping hoses to slip on (and get them off again later) is to smear a small amount of silicone grease on the inside of them, don't worry, the clamps will keep them from sliding off especially with the size of the bead at the end of those hard pipes. I just watched the part where you spray the rad connections with lubricant, silicone spray is best because it won't cause the rubber hose to swell or break down like some penetrants can. I mentioned in a previous comment that I recommend a Block tester to see if any combustion gasses are getting into the cooling system because a lot of your symptoms are consistent with a head gasket or crack in the combustion chamber letting combustion gasses into the cooling system. They are cheap at NAPA (around $50) or so. I still say that would be a good idea. I'm not sure if angling the car will help, the whole point in doing a vacuum fill of the cooling system is to remove all the air so you don't have any trapped in the system. There's no such thing as a vacuum bubble.

Just want to point out since I was at a BMW dealership that had a lemon i8 around 2014. If you keep having issues with overheating, its because of the hard coolant pipes. We had micro fractures on one of the bends on one pipe, the other was also incorrectly bent, and then we also had to deal with the new bleeding procedure which wasn't any good. BMW over complicated the procedure by integrating it into the on board DME. The hard pipes, you're better off just replacing with new or aftermarket/custom. Car got completely torn down trying to find what was wrong. At the end it was BMW's own fault. You might have issues once you start driving it. We vacuumed bled, DME bled, etc and still had it overheat after we started driving. It is a very well known issue with BMW technicians. The head gasket maybe being bad due to overheating almost for sure happened due to the hard pipes causing the heating issue. I replaced at least 2 head gaskets and one pump due to that happening.
Wish you the best in getting it fix.
That feeling you get when they didn’t find Bigfoot at the end of the documentary
