Now Game Of Thrones was one of the biggest TV shows of all time. It had a massive cultural impact and the success of House Of The Dragon shows just how many people were invested in the series when it originally launched. Looking back at the show there's one major moment in it that I think completely changed television and that is the red wedding.
A complete game changer in the show about thrones it subverted expectations and ripped our hearts out whilst delivering one of the biggest twists of all time.
Even watching it almost ten years later it's still really impactful and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down why the scene works so well and how it changed the show and tv as a whole.
If you agree then please hit the thumbs up button and don't forget to subscribe for videos like this every day.
If this is your first time here then I'm Paul, welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, now let's get into The Red Wedding.
-
Ok so in order to discuss it's impact we have to talk where television was back at the turn of the millenium. The medium was very much thought of as being worse than film with the production values, acting and general feel of tv shows being cheap in comparison to their big screen counterparts.
This all changed at the start of the century with TV Networks putting a lot of effort into their shows to match the stature of movies.
AMC did a big event in which it launched both Breaking Bad and Mad Men and HBO started pushing it's fantasy series Game Of Thrones.
George RR Martin had pitched the series for years but it had been rejected due to his pilot script being labelled as the most expensive show of all time.
However HBO took a chance on him and D&D and the show was eventually released. It's popularity started to snowball over time and this is definitely down to the complex characters that we loved and the ones that we loved to hate.

1. Walking Dead Lori's Death and Rick's response is king. 2. Cersi burning down the Sept. 3. Walter White...all of Walter White 🥴😂. 4. Greys anatomy George's & Derrick & Lexi's deaths 😩. 5. Red wedding.
Hodor's death was the worst. Nothing else has made me feel as horrible as the way that went down. We agree it's the same show though.
Red wedding tragedy is not that gore ,but the feeling to watch it is like heart shattered.
HBO started this trend with The Sopranos. Still one of the best shows ever.
We also forget that Arya Stark was on her way to join Rob and her mother only to see their heads being paraded on pikes. This added to her angry and fury and seeking the faceless man after her first encounter in a previous episode
Greywind head was sowed onto robs body. That got to be traumatic. I don't blame her for erasing the house frey.
😢😢😢😢😢
Her mother's head wasn't on a pike and robbs head was replaced with his dire wolfs head. Her body was thrown into the river and she wasn't seeking the faceless man until way later for a different reason. IDK what you're going on about
@@Daniel-vb4tj way to nitpick, who cares as long as we all enjoyed it
@@whipwalka - correcting major inaccuracies is not "nitpicking.' 🤷♀
The saddest part of the red wedding is knowing that catelyn died thinking all of her children were dead ,and that her husband betrayed her for another woman he refused to talk about. Out of all the death in thrones, hers was definitely the most bitter.
Catelyn was an idiot. She treated Jon like sh!t like it was his fault for being born. She let Littlefinger manipulate her into activating Ned against the Lannisters. She captured Tyrion, angering the Lannisters. She kept following Rob around instead of staying her behind in Winterfell with Bran and Rickon. She got on my last nerve.
@@ericajenkins2416 Not only captured tyrion and angering lannisters but then letting him go basically losing the only bargaining chip to get Ned back
That’s the reason why we have Lady Stoneheart in the book, which left with only angry, ignorant and the desire to revenge for her own family
@@Scorpia__ You mean letting *Jaime go right? Tyrion won his trial by combat. Letting Jaime go resulted in the way Robb said it would to Jaime about how he trusted his bannermen with his life but he didn't trust his bannermen with Jaime's life..... If I remember correctly.
@@Jbreeze3878 But ive always wondered why she brought Tyrion to the Eerie, could of brought him back to Winterfell and waited till she had all the facts
Losing Ned was shocking, losing Rob and Catelyn was like having my heart ripped from my chest and chopped in pieces while I watched. After the dread settled though I was so excited. The show tossed out the rule book, and I appreciated that.
Yeah, also sunk in when the credits started rolling with no music
One of the best and devastating moments in media history. This moment and episode shows why GOT is on another level of quality. HOTD Is amazing also and can't wait for Season 2.
Agree. Just when I thought I was out of Westeros, they pulled me back in!
Was* on another level of quality… until seasons 7 & 8 lol
@@summertyme5748 They gave us a offer we can't refuse.
Blood and Cheese should bring some of the same horror 😊
Also worth mentioning how the writers included the five stages of dying (Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) as portrayed by Catelyn....
You mean five stages of grief?
@@hogndog2339 five stages of grief and five stages of death are the same thing. Sometimes you'll see a sixth and seventh stage of grief
@@Jbreeze3878
LMFAO! No they aren't!
You messed up, just admit it.
@@Genesiscoupe3000 the 5 stages of dying and grief are actually the same thing. Seems like you messed up there Joey 🙊
@@codyaaron3371
Absolutely no one says 5 stages of death, because you can have positive reactions to someone's death, whereas grief is always the same.
And please stop obsessing over this Joey character of yours.
It's not healthy.
Dude when they stabbed Talisa in the stomach I was horrified and it just got even worse.
Yes no one seems to be talking about that, it was so horrific knowing she was pregnant😢
The death of Greywind was gut wrenching... just to watch him whine because he knows that Robb is in trouble and when they killed him with arrows 😭😭😭. But the most fucked up part is when they cut off Robb's head and Greywind's head and put Greywind's head on Robb's body 😱. Like you didn't suffer already with The Red Wedding, they give you one last kick in the balls. Re-watching this episode is always hard to watch because it feels like the Starks will never win !!!
Got to mention the Red Wedding totally changed CZcams react scene. Feel like that's when it got big everybody wanted to see everybody's reaction to the Red Wedding
It baffles me how people didn't know what was gonna happen despite the fact that the book had been out for years.
I literally skipped the episode because I didn't have the heart to watch. I mean, it even has mutilation in it, and Robb was my favorite that season.
@@samf.s.7731Tons of people like myself didn’t read the books, so ofc we didn’t know it was gonna happen.
I'm still traumatized by Oberyn Martells death.
I’m probably jaded because it’s been years since I first was blown away by this scene… but damn does it still pack a punch. That scream from Catlyn… absolutely chilling.
I remember watching in shock and awe. I'm almost positive this was the only episode in which the credits ran in total silence. Which was very appropriate as I sat there unpacking what I just saw.
The Red wedding really makes you really feel the fallibility of human existence in the pit of your stomach. It encapsulates so well how death is, by showing us that our lives in a similar capacity to The Stark guests can be taken away, without so much as a by your leave indiscriminately. We are not the main character even if we thought we were. Very Tragic , very true. Phenomenal television.
Underrated comment.
This scene was devastating. I hope we get something similar in House of the Dragon.
Also, random fact but the actress that plays Rob Stark’s pregnant wife Talisa is acting royalty, as she’s played by Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter - Oona Chaplin.
Well the blood and cheese episode hopefully but they kill Helena and aegon oldest son
@@tavonwright8681 not that devastating tbh cause we dont have an emotional connect to those kids
@@AyushRaj-uu1dw I agree- I bet they will spend time in the first episode of season 2 showing them more to remind people and to try to force that connection with the audience, but I think it might be that we feel bad for Helena because we see she is in a bad situation. Plus we know how much Alicent loves her family so I’m sure it will help transform her, much like Luke’s death did for his mother.
I can guarantee you that HoTD has plenty of "gut punches" left in the tank. Let's not forget as Dany said to Jon Snow in Season 7 about the dragon pit "...this place was the beginning of the end for my family"...
HoTD still has plenty of hearts left to break in it's wake.
@@timothyfarr2479 still waiting for my boi Joffrey to rip it all apart
Even if it was in 2013 this one STILL does hurt. The brutality and the macabre that followed afterwards was beyond Shocking. Still hurts 😭
Having read the book beforehand, I remember watching this episode with a friend who hadn't read the books. As the credits rolled they looked at me in disbelief. All I could say was "I hope you weren't attached to those characters...."
My older brother finally convinced me to watch this show, and told me how easy it would be to binge since each of the first 2 seasons only had 10 episodes and season 3 was only 8 episodes in. I binged it all in a week.
THIS was the first "new" episode I watched as it aired with my brother. After completely binging the show for almost 3 full seasons in 1 week...this was a mind-blowing episode.
Man, peak GoT. Robb is everyone’s favorite before Filch and the Lannisters take him out. Truly heart wrenching scene
Great recap of the red wedding. You summed it up perfectly. I can remember watching it in complete and utter shock. The way the silent titles rolled at the end was genius as it left you with just your own thoughts trying to comprehend what you’ve just witnessed
I wish we’d gotten Lady Stoneheart following this scene as well. Would’ve made it even more impactful tbh.
I remember reading the scene in the books and it absolutely floored me , then when I saw it on tv it still choked me up . Just brutal.
Things never recovered after that. Still get goosebumps watching it now. An all time classic.
Completely agree. This episode gutted me and left me in complete shock. One of my favorite episodes of television ever.
That scene was indeed devastating to watch. Yet exciting too because he went so ridiculously far in its savagery and it was shocking
I remember watching this after Season 3 already finished and I managed to avoid spoilers. I binged the series up until that point and after watching it I had tears STREAMING down my face. I will never forget the feeling that I lost my fictional family. One of the greatest tv series of all time.
When I saw the red wedding I was in complete denial not accepting that they were dead. It didn't hit me until the following episode when I had to accept the were all dead watching the cleaning lady trying to clean the puddle of blood still on the floor.
Loved the "cartoon shades" over that perfect line: "I'll find another."
Probably the most shocking moment in TV history for me. I had to sit with it for a while
Having the season climax at the second to last episode was a HBO tactic way before GOT. The Wire, Sopranos and even the Sex and the City had their pivotal episode being the second to last.
It’s so true about the connection to fictional characters. I still get mad and sad when I think about Robb Stark getting stabbed in the back. Had he been a real person I would’ve called my banners and marched to war right then and there. He would’ve been such a great king.... When Walter Frey says “I’ll find another” you know that all hope is lost and all I could think was “I can’t wait for Jon Snow to kill all of you”. Some people want Jon Snow to really be dead in the books but imo that would be going just a tad too far. I can get behind killing off characters in the story but if you kill the heart and soul of your book you ruin the story and imo Jon Snow and Danny are the heart and soul of the story and if they die it needs to be at the end
If a character can be considered the soul of ASOIAF, I think it would be Bran. Its a different matter the show ruined him.
I do remember feeling exactly how he described it. Like things were going in the Starks’ favor. Then everyone abruptly getting killed and feeling like a “That’s it?!?!? They just take her another L and THAT’S IT?!?!”😅😅😅
The red wedding was the last episode of GoT that my friend watched, Robb was his favorite.
When I 1st saw this I was speechless... Nothing nothing I could say I had to rewatch to grasp it all again. It was a gut Punch and I was crying ... Another reason why I fell in love with GOT. I had to take a moment after.
I watched this last night. Your awesome for reviewing it again
When I watched it for the first time, I literally had to skip a lot of the scenes because of how impactful it was. Not necessarily because I was attached to the characters but because of how traumatizing it was!
The no music credits was next level. I sat there just like Catelyn in stunned silence whilst they played
As an African American, when I first started watching GOT, I thought it was mainly going to be about the whitewalkers because that was the first scene. Then, was pissed when a white walker not only didn’t show up until later in the 1st season but it was some dungeon & dragons BS but didn’t hook me until Ned’s death and then the red wedding…… and here I am now clicking on ANY VIDEO MENTIONING GOT. lol. It’s got me in a chokehold
I remember the first time I watched this episode I was with my mom who had read the books… she was so stressed the whole episode and then I found out why💀
So glad I hadn't read the books. This hit so hard in the feels. Knowing it would be coming wouldn't quite hit the same.
Knowing it was coming was excruciating. Just like...(S1 HOTD SPOILERS)...
Luke and Aemon, hoping that they would change the story even knowing deep down it was not going to happen. The desperate hope for a likeable, doomed character going unknowingly to their death. Aahhh man I love GoT and HoTD
Well, you can at least enjoy others pain as you watch them react.
Idk what’s wrong with my brain but I was completely unsurprised at the Red Wedding. Gruesome? Totally. But as soon as Robb reneged on his marriage alliance I knew the Freys we’re going to betray the Starks. The marriage pact was literally the only thing that made Walder Frey help them.
nothing wrong with ur brain thats what makes the twist so good. any1 could have seen it coming the hints were all there. but still most of us didnt. re reading the book or re watching the show knowing what happens it all seems so obvious
Hi Paul, love this moment you picked for a breakdown. Total.gut punch
I remember the first time I saw that scene. I had NO idea that it was coming and I was shaken to my core. It was truly a WTF just did I just see moment. All I could muster was “whaaaaaa?” Ala Moe siezlak.
I remember watching this episode with my roommate at the time. She and I sat there wide mouthed in complete silence, all the way through the credits. Finally she broke the silence “I don’t even know what to say”. Well done, dramatic, horrifying death scene. Reading it in the book was just as gut wrenching. I had to take a break from A Storm of Swords for almost 2 months!
It’s an incredible episode, but I still have never recovered from this absolute gut punch into oblivion. It made me want to stop watching the show at the time and today the thought of it still messes me up. Sad that Robb could be remembered for all his remarkable victories as King in the North, but instead he’s just remembered for this. Never been more sick as a fan before except for maybe Glenn in TWD.
And Ope in Sons of Anarchy….😢 I was also upset for days watching that
@@kristen9827Opie from S.O.A , Glenn from the Walking Dead. Bobby Baccala from The Sopranos. And now Robb & Catelyn Stark. The most painful cinematic deaths in tevision history
God I'll never forget this moment, I was beside myself and I was pregnant at the time so omg I was just beside myself. GOT is so good, I wanna go back and watch them all again lol.
I was in shock and my eyes kept filling with tear afterwards. I barely made it through the scene the first time and still don't like to watch it all the way through.
I never watched GOT until recently and the red wedding scene dropped my jaw to the fucking floor lol.
I started watching GoT 3 weeks ago since all my friends were watching HoTD. Let's just say a few of my neighbors were concerned after I saw the Red Wedding. It's probably the most traumatizing thing I've seen on TV.
How hilarious would it be if Cat slapped Bolton only to realize he just didn't feel like taking off his chainmail that day?
You always make me think outside box Paul! Great video!! 👍 😊
Much appreciated, thank you for all the support
Thank goodness Paul is back in control of this channel. I unsubed because that other guy was f--king awful! So happy to have you back, Paul!
Thank you these videos are going to help us through the next two years while we wait for season two of HoTD🙏
thanks for the info
I think the worst part of this whole thing, is that Robb was just trying to save his family and his banner man kept pressuring him into different things. “Go independent” “Marry my daughter” “Flay a bunch of random prisoners”. Dude was fucked start to finish.
I still remember I watched it in india on same time when it was streaming in US, completely shocked and saddened with how it all turn out.. Could not speak with Fnf whole day😒🙁.. True Master piece!
One of the most impactful events in modern tv history “the red wedding”
great review ❤
I remember watching many TV shows these past 5 - 6 years and thinking "this was inspired by the red wedding yup" in the Last Kingdom, Into the Badlands, countless drama shows,
Ned's death shook me up more than the Red Wedding.
It was devastating because Rob Stark did not listen to the advice of his mother, but listened to the head between his legs. smh. . .
Another great video Paul! You brought that emotion back to me and now I’m gonna go find that Ted Talk.
Absolutely. I mean .. I knew what was coming … but even still and idk a decade later I watch and still think … cmon Robb this time you can make it ! Just a couple arrows … move.
Adding to the scene was the unbelievable acting. When you see Robb pale, like you know he’s lost a bit too much blood … barley utter .. mother. . . That is just chilling.
I read this before i saw it on TV and it was equally as gutting. Almost felt like giving up on it all. (I didn't obviously) Great video Paul!
Thankfully this wasn't spoiled for me by the time i got into GOT around season 4. I did not see it coming at all. My jaw was on the floor.
10 years later , and I still cry . So yeah , that great TV
The biggest surprise ever. I certainly did not expect both Rob and Catelyn to die.
I stood up in my living room screaming, 🤯"Oh MY GOD. THEY KILLED ALL THE SUPERHEROES!! 😭
I was so devastated but so excited at the same time! That was the episode that prompt me to go and read the actual Books ASOIAF....GREAT STUFF! JUST PHENOMENAL STORYTELLING.
I just completed this season few days ago..and when I watched that episode and this specific scene..I mean I was like completely shocked and surprised..at first I thought it could be a dream sequence or something like that but man that was all brutal and totally unexpected..which made me love this show even more
Great video essay
This scene had too much to digest in such a short time there was no time to get surprised, shock was the feeling i had for 10min lol
YEAH!!! It's exactly that, so many killed so quickly
Good job...!!
The scene in the next season of Tywin melting down the Stark family Valyrian sword to reforge it all the while "Goodbye Brother" turns into "Rains of Castamere" gave me chills.
What an amazing episode! RIP GoT Seasons 1-4 💔
That's so true red wedding and last ep of house of the dragons is devastating as hell
I love 😍love your channel! Your content is perfectly narrated and I enjoy watching and listening to you tell the story behind it. The Red Wedding ripped my guts out.... literally!! I got🤢 to my stomach watching the entire thing.... and only when they showed Robs wolf's head being worn on one of the enemy's heads did I allow myself to run to the bathroom! Thanks for the memories!!
Thank you so much!
Rob's Direwolf's head was attached to ROB'S headless body!
It set up the rest of the series really. You knew after that, any character could be killed off at any time. You didn't know what to expect anymore.
The Red Wedding was a bit of a literary milestone also I'd say...
i think this is the only ep that was totally silent during the end credits. that was wise bc my mouth just stayed there agape for a good 5 minutes. absolutely rocked.
ETA: ok, so you mentioned the no music too 😂😂
Thank you for including scenes from LOST. That was one of my favorite shows and the ending taught me what subverting expectations was. Brilliant show tho! Namaste
So devastating to watch, remember and reflect, and yet it makes Arya’s return and revenge so much sweeter…
I watched this episode for the first time yesterday morning, it was truly shocking and heartbreaking!!
this scene should have won all the awards
This episode made me so upset. I needed revenge and had to keep watching to see some Northern revenge on those Lanister bastards!
I remember first seeing Ned Stark lose his head. And I thought nothing else in GoT or tv in general would shock me as much. THEN I saw the Red Wedding 😩🤦🏾♂️ I'm still traumatized
Proper shocked by this scene, was left gobsmacked unable to talk whilst the credits rolled
When Arya sees them put the dead wolfs head on her brothers body watching them chant king of the north was the darkest moments I’ve ever seen on tv ever
I never get tired of watching reruns of GOT and HOT
This left me quite teary. I remember just staring blankly on the screen whenn the episode ended as the credits didn't have any music whatsoever. One of the greatest moments in TV history indeed.
I didn't watch GoT until I got HBO Max so even after knowing what happens, it still devastated me 😥
It is masterfully written, you go from the Ned Stark murder mystery, to the Rob Stark revenge story to...
I agree. It was most devastating to watch
I remember sitting silently, aghast, as the titles silently rolled at the end of the episode, probably sat there for 3 minutes trying to process what just happened and the way it was presented. Bravo!
I think it also benefitted from CZcams reactions. I didn’t start watching GOT until I started seeing the red wedding reaction videos on YT. After that my feed started getting clips. Then I went back and watched from the beginning on demand. Without YT I’m not sure I would’ve ever watched it.
Bless you 🙏
You too
I had read the books before the episode came out. I didn't spoil it for my friends, instead I ate pop-corn and listened as they theorized about Rob's future and then saw him die. It sucked that he died but I will never forget watching that episode with all of my friends. O, they know I read all the books and have an idea how the story will go, but they dont want spoilers. So I just enjoy the reactions. lol btw blind now and can't read the video. So if I win can you announce it so that I can hear it? thx mate and be well!
The absolute POWER this show had…
Can’t wait to binge watch this show.
As per GRRM, The Red Wedding was inspired by the slaughter of MacDonalds at the Massacre of Glencoe. Although the guest rights were reversed as the MacDonalds were killed by the Campbell troops they were quartering.
I rewatched this the other day...still shocking
I just rewatched season 3 in it’s entirety a few weeks ago for the first time in five or so years and it still hit hard. I’ve tried watching Rains of Castamere on its own but it just doesn’t have the same punch as when I first saw it. But when you rewatch seasons 1-3 in their entirety god damn it hits just as hard as it did the first time if not more so. I also got really attached to Robb since we were about the same age when I first got into Song of Ice and Fire. Shit stings man… shit stings
