Glory is a 1989 American historical war drama film directed by Edward Zwick about the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the Union Army's earliest African-American regiments in the American Civil War. It stars Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the regiment's commanding officer, and Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman as fictional members of the 54th. The screenplay by Kevin Jarre was based on the books Lay This Laurel (1973) by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush (1965) by Peter Burchard and the personal letters of Shaw. The film depicts the soldiers of the 54th from the formation of their regiment to their heroic actions at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner.

This movie is hardly ever talked about. Outstanding cast. One of the best movies ever made.
I think i saw this in high school
Bro this movie is standard high school curriculum lol. Everyone knows it
I got to see this in 8th grade. Spectacular film!
I wish i got to see this movie in highschool. But then again i live in the south
@@captainnutsack8151 It actually isn't, my high school never talked about this movie, but I knew of it because of my dad
CZcams algorithm has gone from Schindlers List to the Pianist with a stop by American Sniper to where we are now with Glory. I’m here for it.
I’ve wondered if people have had the same recommendations as me but apparently exactly so
Wait you got American sniper? I had 12 years a slave
@@Hunted_Productions lol I left that one off by mistake!

I feel like the most committed leaders are those who never intended to lead. It means they didn't try to get those promotions, they were earned naturally, and it becomes more important for them to do their very best, be humble, and always put their men first.
They also understand the great responsibility and are not eager to have that weight or accountability
Usually the worst people to be in charge are those who want it desperately.
@@jimsmith9853 Almost always.
@@jimsmith9853it’s a fine thing to be career driven, as long as it’s not the only thing that drives you
If you are not hungry for the promotions you won't get them unless they are "time in" based. If you show up and do a solid job without complaining and never any issues your superiors will keep you right in that spot so they never have to worry about the job getting done or finding a replacement for you.
NCOs, backbone of America’s Army!
No one is more professional than I.
Given the close order formations and tactics that they have to use at the time, officers played a more direct and important role in the battlefield back then.
@@Progamermove_2003That's debatable. Yes, commissioned officers would've been the ones to issue most of the important orders - but it was the NCO's responsibility to ensure those orders were actually being followed. Which was not an easy task in an age before radio technology, on a smoky battlefield rattled by the sound of gunfire, to a firing line that could be hundreds of meters wide.
@@kentknightofcaelin4537 Aren't NCOs mostly equivalent to Sergeants, Corporals etc? I honestly don't understand how anything smaller than a company sized unit could have a really important role in the battlefield of the time.
Yes NCOs did played an important role at the time, but the most important people would've equivalent of modern day Lieutenants, Captains or Majors.
@@Progamermove_2003true though non commissioned goes from sergeant all the way to sgt major. These men made sure that in the din of the battle the officers orders were heard and followed especially as the battlfields of the time were smoke filled death pits.
Morgan Freeman will no doubt go down in history as one of the greatest actors ever.
Got into acting very late too - in his 50s.
@@XiagraBallsThat is not correct, he already acted in his 20s (both stage and screen).
@fredl.8669 You are correct. He was 27.
The four best of my time are Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington.
Two of those four are in this movie. That's a rare thing and wonderful when it happens.
"I know exactly how you feel"

Cary Elwes had such range,
From Glory to Robin Hood: Men in Tights, he couldn't miss.
Definitely. Guy is a terrific character actor. One of my favorite roles I first knew him for was the 1994 Jungle Book movie. He was such a good villain in that one.
Don’t forget Princess Bride and Saw
Inconceivable that you forgot Princess Bride

-Kahless The Great, actually
@lorirobinnutt He is a GREAT human cartoon character, though.
I always tear up watching this movie and remembering the 54th Massachusetts. Thank you for your service.
That "I know exactly how you feel" was one of the best lines/moments in the movie.
Only just realised they saluted the British way back then with palm facing forward.
I think we didn’t start the knife hand salute until WWI
OK. I might have to google that. Interesting topic. Commonwealth countries Armies still salute with open palm. The Royal Australian Navy salute American style. Army and RAAF British way. The Navy likes to be different!! lol@@jamesbaggett7223
They were trained by an Irish veteran of the British Army
Doesn’t the Royal Navy do the palm down salute?
@@DiviAugustiOriginating in the Royal Navy it was the "open plam" salute. However during the time of Queen Victoria, she was given a Royal inspection on one vessel whereby the sailors saluted her. The sailors before the inspection were "tarring" the deck which made the plan of their hands dirty. Queen Victoria commented about that so the Royal Navy angled their salute level to their brow.
Glory always makes me cry. Your history is so sad and hopefull at the same time. It's inherently prone to tear down and rebuild. History is written by the victors. Battle on.
All the actors nailed their roles. Absolute fav
One of my all time favorite movies. One thing I do want to mention is the music. The soundtrack. Absolutely beautiful and haunting. Perfect.
Enough can't be said about this movie.
A masterpiece!
Went from All Quiet on the Western Front, to Schindler’s List, now Glory. Guess its time to pull out my old VHS
Bloody, bloody brilliant war movie, easily in the top 20 all time Great War flicks.
I never get tired of this movie. From the first time my 6th grade history teacher brought it to school on the bootleg version til now, it's still mandatory viewing during the week of June 14- June 19.
This remains one of my favorite films- outstanding writing, cast, photography.
Mine too!
Glory is one of the only period piece war movies I actively praise. I deeply appreciate this film.

"Colonel what the sam hell did you volunteer me for??"

1989 war thriller with excellent cast, extremely difficult
movie to make so the actors had to be on point!
Denzel's first Oscar! This was a masterpiece! Also, top five soundtrack of all soundtracks ever.
This movie is highly underrated! One of my favorite movies growing up!
Retired NCO here. After 21 years active duty, I went overseas visiting my former enemies. When I informed some of them I was an NCO, I was informed NCO's were hated there because they used soldiers for their own slave labor and in the bedroom too. That country was Russia.
I guess not too different from the SNCOs you must have dealt with, huh?
@@outdoorscholar6016 We never seemed to have that issue. Must be the caliber of people in the job field.
@@user-lh8ct7zi7p key word here, we. Can’t say about the Army or the other branches, but I’ve listened to enough airmen (active duty and vets) talk about this kinda stuff.
most memorable ones were the memes making fun of the SNCO with a wife and 3 kids crying cuz the E3 they’ve got the hots for got engaged
@@outdoorscholar6016 I was combat arms, no women. No one to get pregos. Now, what happens in a tank turret, stays in a tank turret but since there are 3 people in there, can't hardly say it would be non-consensual...if anything were to happen.
I’ve read that and seen it several docs. One was about the Soviet army and showed how NCOs would take brand new equipment conscripts were issued for themselves and give them worn out equipment. Conscripts often reminded themselves how many days left until “demob,” demobilization as they called finishing their enlistment and becoming civilians again. About like our draftees in Vietnam. Not a good morale indicator. Drunkenness and corruption were the norm, and were largely what got Viktor Belenko thinking about defecting. Seems to be a Russian tradition going back to the Czar’s days. You can see how much they value the lives of enlisted by their performance in Ukraine. Respect to you for your service.
One of the GREATEST movie EVER!!!

For those who don’t know, sergeant major is one of the highest ranks an e listed man can achieve and these days takes many years. Some guys serve for two decades and don’t get there. It’s a rank that often carries more respect than low-level officers.
Sergeant Major IS barring special billets, i.e., Sergeant Major of the Army or Marine Corps, the highest rank on the enlisted side. They often answer directly to the Commanding Officer and him/her alone, is the liason between the Officers and junior enlisted, first among equals to the other NCOs and often considered, second to God or IS God in any given command. Sergeant Major talks, ALL listen, including the Commanding Officer.
Other branch equivalents
Command Master Chief Petty Officer/Chief of the Boat(Surface Navy, Coast Guard and Submarines respectively)
Command Chief Master Sergeant (Air Force and Space Force)
@@chrismc410I believe they are more answerable to the Chief of Staff to the Army/Marines/Navy/Air Force . From which they highlight the day to day issues of the enlisted personnel within that particular service

This film, and Patriot, should be viewed if you haven’t seen it. Not just if you’re a history buff, or for historical or educational reasons. But because, they are wonderfully told stories of the struggles, strife, passion, patriotism, and sacrifice, of the men and woman that made up the land of the free, among the home of the brave.
Saw this movie in 8th grade. Been in love with it ever since.
There is much that has been said before, and will be said in the future, about the men who do not look forward to leadership and yet find themselves leading.
One of those things is that these men are oftentimes among the best leaders, and can be looked to as a prime example when trying to explain the difference between a "leader" and a "man in charge". Every leader is a man in charge, to some degree...but not every man in charge is a leader.
As a general rule, if you don’t feel like you are the one for the position, you most certainly are.
Cary Elwes , I love him as Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Good movie. As a history buff "Glory" is one of my favorites. There are a few technical inaccuracies, but nothing too major.
