    Quick note: toward the end I said half the men die...that's not correct. Half were casualties but many were wounded and survived.

      Denzell was great...no argument....but I think both Mathew Broderick and Morgran Freeman gave excellent performances. Mathew Broderick is known as a good light comedic actor but he showed that when given the right part he could handle a dramatic role.

      Is it even underrated? It's been recieved as it should. The reality is the ending is so devastating its not exactly a movie people want to watch repeatedly. But that doesn't make it a bad movie. Just tragic.

    Love this movie. Had to do a project in 8th grade on a Civil War battle, and while most people did the obvious ones like Gettysburg, Antietam and Bull Run, I chose to do mine on Ft Wagner. Built a whole scale fort out of wood and sand and used the miniature civil war model soldiers and everything. Probably my favorite project I’ve ever done.

    Saw this movie when I was in 7th grade, it stuck with me forever and a big inspiration for getting a degree in history! It’s an emotional movie to watch, we also had to watch it for Army ROTC training, as Shaw has to make moral choices that call into question the orders he has been given and solidarity with his men.

    Love this movie. I have friends who were extras in the 54th, some of whom are still living history folks portraying US Colored Troop soldiers, and one who is an absolute expert in arms and equipment and I think was a consultant on this film. I completely agree that this is the best Civil War movie of all time, and this scene is great. All that said the 54th gets the lions share of the credit as an example of US Colored Troop units. Most of the 54th were free people of color. The same is true of the soldiers of the First Louisiana Native Guard. The 9th, 11th, and 13th Louisiana African Descent, however, were almost all (if not all) people who had recently escaped enslavement. They were fairly raw recruits when they were attacked at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana. They won that battle but the 9th suffered heavy casualties including a lot of captives. Most of the captives were murdered. That's another great story that gets lost behind the better publicized ones (like the 20th Maine and Chamberlain eclipsing the 140th New York and Paddy O'Rourke at Little Round Top for example). I know I beat the Western Theater drum a lot, but all these guys were heroes and deserve recognition. Maybe someday someone will make a movie about them.

    My Ggggg Grandfather was made Lt. Lewis Reed of the 54th right before they sacked Charleston. He was later made Captain of the 54th company K. He served from the very beginning to the very end of the war. He was wounded at Antietam 10/17/62 and later returned. I have his musket. His sword is with a collector who won't sell it unfortunately. Anyways great video sir. I've always loved this movie even before my dad told me of our family history.

    Military service is truly the biggest equalizer in life. Doesnt matter where you are from, how rich or poor your family is, what color you are etc you will all get your rear ends beaten and learn to respect the person and not those insignificant things. One of the most true statements I ever heard is the simple "Brothers in Arms" as you truly are Brothers from another mother at that point.

      From someone who served I can tell you this is very true. I’m fact it starts with basic training. One of the reasons the drill sergeant is “mean” to everyone is because you have so many different kinds of people Jewish Christian black white north south and so on that you need something to hate together. Forget about your differences and hate the same dude makes you learn y’all ain’t so different

    • @alpharius4434
      @alpharius4434 Před 2 lety

      I lightly disagree.
      Tought yes, the institution and the very nature of his trade push to some equalization, the fact is that miliitary just attract part of population who are poor and yet want to respect some social order. But those population, in the military willl be exposed to danger, death, PTSD and permanent or lasting physical injury that risk to impair them socially after the service.
      And meanwhile, many of those people will have problem to found lasting family.
      Nothwistanding, all of the recruit won't end up officers, far from it. And military will have internal screw up, and politicking among highest rank tought success will moderate the phenomenon.
      So in the end, military is an option to poverty, but it's not that bright, and in the long term, it's more a tool of social control.

The ACW is my favourite topic from US history but getting information about it here in Germany is not that easy, especially in the pre-Internet age (I was born in 1981). The 54th was not the only regiment to attack Battery Wagner. The movie seems to hint at this as other units would follow up if the 54th took the parapet. But on Wikipedia this is what is listed (the Union had over 1515 killed, wounded or captured) " The 54th Massachusetts, an infantry regiment composed of African-American soldiers led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, led the Union attack at dusk. They were backed by two brigades composed of nine regiments. The first brigade was commanded by Gen. George Crockett Strong and was composed of the 54th Massachusetts, 6th Connecticut, 48th New York, 3rd New Hampshire, 76th Pennsylvania, and the 9th Maine regiments. The second brigade was commanded by Col. Haldimand S. Putnam of the 7th New Hampshire as acting brigade commander. His brigade consisted of the 7th New Hampshire, 62nd Ohio, 67th Ohio, and the 100th New York regiments. A third brigade under Gen. Stevenson was in reserve, with General Truman Seymour commanding on the field, but did not enter action."

    • @firstcitytraveler
      @firstcitytraveler Před rokem +2

      @@VloggingThroughHistory Just saying they suffered heavy casualties still seems to make the 54th not only the heroes and the martyrs. Most the other Union units also broke over the walls troops and suffered major casualties. (I think 1515 (with perhaps 800 Union dead) casualties is extreme and the 54th suffered 121: 30 KIA, 24 died of wounds, 15 captured, and 52 missing. I have not found a total wounded). I have always loved the movie Glory but we have to realize that the 54th was not the first African American unit to fight. Here in Kansas we are extremely proud of the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry which had fought in four battles before the assault on Battery Wagner by the 54th.

    I used to read from a presentation copy of "Recollections and Experiences of an Abolitionist," (1875) by Alexander Milton Ross at Boston Public Library that was owned by William Lloyd Garrison. Ross was my great grandmother's uncle Sandy. In this edition he states that he had been sent across enemy lines to negotiate for fair treatment for exslave POWs in the Union army. I believe this is mentioned in the movie. He used his network of contacts along the underground railroad to trace a rebel mail carrier traveling to Canada and saboteurs entering New Brunswick from Maine. He had powers of arrest as a Canadian government official, and in was in direct contact with Abraham Lincoln. This book, and "Memoirs of a Reformer"(1893) have been reprinted in paperback and used in black history classes.

    I saw this movie as a young kid so many times, I do however find it hard to watch now, in particular the hospital scene. Just gets to me

    Love this scene, made better knowing that it was the enlisted man who started it. not the "educated gentlemen officers"
    I find myself yelling at the men in the last scene when the 54th has made their breach of the walls and are fighting and running along. I keep telling them to stop and consolidate, wait for the reinforcements...but they always run into those two canister shot cannons. :(

    When the white corporal suddenly realises what these brave men are going to do against ridiculous odds and shows respect for his follow soldiers and the others join in. Brings a tear to my eye every time

    I'm late to the game here, but I recommend this scene - czcams.com/video/Dp_DnZkoVNY/video.html - from a little movie called The Straight Story. It's just 2 veterans talking about their WWI experiences, but the writing and acting is just incredible! Scene in question starts at about 4:10.

    I have the diary my Great-Great Grandfather wrote during his service in the Civil war. He was at the Battle of Fort Wagner and wrote about the assault of the 54th Mass. Sadly as a sign of the times he referred to the 54th Mass as "The N-word Regiment" but he did give them high praise in their fighting adn the bravery of the 54th Mass. The diary was an interesting read covering his enlistment in Connecticut through his discharge. I found it very odd that he volunteered as an abolishionist to "Free the Slaves" but invariably uses the N-word to refer to African Americans.

    Shaw giving over his personal effects really occurred which is depicted right after the scene.
    You can see his diary and letters at the Harvard library.
    The biggest issue I have with the movie is the fictional portrayal of Shaw, a devoted abolitionist, having Denzel Washington whipped. It never occurred.
