I believe Dan Sickles died in the Summer of 1914. Outlived his much younger wife by over 50 years.
Been loving your videos lately on both Sabaton as well as the history. Given the subject of this one, I'm curious if you have read the "alternative history" book Gettysburg by Newt G. and its subsequent two after that? If so would love your thoughts on them in the "what might have been" category.
I never really looked into it but I am somehow related to Dan Sickles. I had an uncle Bobby Sickles who died when I was young and he was like a great great nephew of Dan Sickles. I never did a genealogy rundown on my family tree so I have no real idea but that’s always something I was told when I was a kid.
I'm also a relative and have dug DEEP to try and figure out the path of lineage. General Sickles never had any sons, so both of our relations trace back to one of his 3 brothers...of which you can find little to no record of at all, unfortunately.

Gettysburg National Park has several of their Park Rangers that talk you on a tour of several areas of the battlefield, covering different days and locations. Highly recommend getting on one of these if you can. They cover Dan Sickles and his movement of his Corps out of line.
I don't know if you'll read this but there is something similar in the Indonesian Revolutionary War/War of Independence against the Dutch in 1945-1950 by the way that there would be appointments based on the amount of followers you have. One of the most famous movie made about that era was called Nagabonar.
Nagabonar is a nickname for a thief who rose to prominence during the war. He went out of jail in 1945 and saw that the Japanese are surrendering and the Dutch are coming back. He raised his village friends and form a battalion and gave himself the rank of Field Marshall and his closest friends officer grade ranks. There is a funny scene when his friend was caught by a local village chief because he impregnated a village girl. The village chief asked him to dole out punishment. Thinking that a firing squad is too extreme, a chastising is too light he decided to demote his friend.
Now Nagabonar did not know how the rank system works; he gave himself the rank of field Marshall because he liked the sound of it. So he demoted his friend from Major to Sergeant Major.
During the demotion ceremony his friend fainted due to the shock. When his friend cried and asked him why he demoted him so low, so he said that he made him Sergeant Major because both rank has "Major" in its name hence he thought it was close in level.
If Chris ever stops sh###ing on Woodrow Wilson, I will be sad. I would request a video every month on how awful he was as a person.

16:10 I am not sure about this specific case but believing large organisations in the 1800s to largely be built on meritocracy is a bit naive imo. Feels a lot like office politics whenever I read about US civil war high command and some of these people were in fact both incompetent and petty.

This is only concerning Stanton and why he got the position of Secretary of War: While Lincoln was very cognizant of having unity and choosing Democrats for certain positions, I don't think Stanton was on the list of people Lincoln wanted because he wanted Democrats. The two had met years earlier when they worked on the same lawsuit. While Stanton didn't like Lincoln, the feeling wasn't mutual. In fact, Lincoln thought Stanton was a genius. And as the previous US Attorney General under Buchanan, I think it's safe Lincoln might have found something for Stanton even without the war. It's also probably important to note that Stanton became a Republican in 1862, the same year he became the War Secretary. So we can't actually say he was a Democrat while working for Lincoln.

@@andrewjennings7306 Have you read any of the books about him? A chad? I don’t think that’s an accurate description, the men of the 1860’s aren’t the type of men to be called a chad. He was a civil war general, central park in NYC, and the Gettysburg National Park are there because of him. He was also the most controversial general, he is either celebrated or hated. If you are going strictly on “The History Channels” account of the war is, your only getting a watered down image.

For the life of me I cannot understand why Sickles chose to abandon the high ground, touring the battlefield it seems complete lunacy to leave Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge for the Peach Orchard. I have often wondered if the Battle of Gettysburg would have continued past Day 1 if Sickles had stood his ground. Would Lee have seen the position in front of him and been more amicable to Longstreet's plan of outflanking the Union Army to fight on more favorable terrain than continuing the assault against a well fortified Union Army.
His reasoning, based on a previous experience at Chancellorsville, was that the ground in front of him was higher and would allow rebel artillery a great position to fire down on him. He was right about the ground, the Peach Orchard is higher than Cemetery Ridge, but he disobeyed a direct order and fractured the union line.
@@VloggingThroughHistory Thanks for the reply, yes that is most likely the reason and perhaps there was a tinge of resentment to Meade for putting him in the most exposed position in the line. That does not make him right but does give some light as to why he would make that decision. It seems Sickles may have been promoted beyond his level of competency, he is certainly not alone in that regard.
Seems to have happened with prominent war democrats. Sickles, McClellan, McClernand all come to mind.

Interesting that History documentary Gettysburg makes him seem completely incompetent
I heard that Meade joked about Sickles move...saying he might as well keep advancing west across Pennsylvania, because there would always be higher ground in front of him...lol
What if Sickles had stayed in his assigned position? If so...Longstreets' en echelon assault may have gained enough unimpeded momentum to punch through Sickles line, and break through behind union lines. The original plan was to roll up the left flank, but Longstreet had to alter the time and direction of the assault because of Sickles move. I doubt that spending hours feeding brigades and regiments into the whirlpool of death that was the Wheatfield, was on the rebel itinerary list, nor that they would have wasted time and energy...breaking up their formations by bogging down in Devils Den. Sickles fucked up the union battle plan...but he also fucked up the rebel battle plan.
It's possible that Sickles was initially confused about his assigned position because when he arrived at Gettysburg he passed the Peach Orchard and it had been occupied by Bufords Cavalry, which was assuming a common left flank guard function ...but in corresponding with high command he learned exactly where he was supposed to post his corps...but he decided to unilaterally disobey and defy.
It was a stupid move, and he did a great spin job covering his ass...he even got a medal...but in the end, I doubt Lincoln or high command could take him seriously, and sidelined him.
He was not given back command...he ended up being sent to Latin America on diplomatic assignment lol.
I disagree with the idea that Sickles getting his Corps (and part of two other Corps) torn to pieces helped in any way. Had the rebels broken his line on Cemetery Ridge, there were two entire Corps (the 5th and 6th) sitting there in that spot to counterattack. It also would have significantly closed the distance between his Corps and the II and XII Corps from which reinforcements ended up being drawn during the fight.
@@VloggingThroughHistory Yes right, reinforcements would have been closer at hand in that case. The points of Cemetery Hill that the Rebs did break through illustrate that point.
I'm not implying Sickles helped in any way, nor did he deserve a medal. A court martial maybe... They had to cover his ass and fill the gaps, but that his move may have inadvertently confounded the rebel battle plan, besides causing a lot of trouble on the union side.
What did Longstreet say about Sickles salient? Is there an account out there somewhere by him about the events of Day 2?

Just letting you know while Potential History is funny and brings hilarious memes into the history subject, he unfortunately has some historical biases, most notably relating to WW2 and the Germans. And also makes some mistakes, like the location of Sickles’s leg.
