Couple little things Ballots normally weren’t printed prior to the 1900s. You would literally go with a slip of paper for who you wanted to vote for, and a lot of time those were printed by the local party. No Republican Party in the south, no pre printed tickets with the Republican candidate. And at this time, the 14th Amendment had yet to be ratified, so under Barron v Baltimore, the federal constitution along with the bill of rights only restricted the general government as it was called back then. American here, obviously I largely agree as I'm doing an entire video channel attempting to get Americans to look at our history less through the hero lens and be more accepting of the awkwardness of how we got here. I think this reflects what he describes as the difference put another way. But I would add the caveat that I think the obsession with ancestry is more a "white" thing than an American thing. I'm white, I come from a family where both sides were very focused on letting me know what great person I was related to growing up, even as we were only a lower middle class family at that point, and looking back I do think it was to project connection to "greatness" through genetics...which is to me problematic. But the connection to the downtrodden he mentioned I think does tends to be the experience of other groups of Americans, particularly African Americans who from my experience are also very ancestry focused, but more trying to find the broken connection through the slave trade and less about "I'm related to X therefore I have good genes" Personally, i think connecting yourself to your ancestry is often a crutch, and like great man theory generally can be dangerous if taken to seriously. The war ship HMS Verdun was deliberatly chosen as the battle of Verdun was the longest battle in WW1. The tomb of the unknown warrior in the US is now empty. The family of the soldier that layed there were found through DNA and he was rightly returned and buried in Arlington. The ceremony was normal as his family wished that he not be singled out among the many that did not return. Something that is really honourable to those that still remained unknown. I lost my great grandfather in WW1 and my Grandfather in Italy in WW2. They were 27 and 36 years old. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them

Additionally it is a time of day a large number of factors come together in all of our bodies and boost the drive to sleep. Lots of factors have been used to try and explain it including the aforementioned hard work and heat, but also post-lunch drowsiness, our circadian rhythms naturally make us tired at that time of the day, and we have a drop in cortisol decreasing our alertness and making us sleepier. If we didn't have these long work days and artificial light most of us would be doing it and indeed it's actually v common in a lot of the world, not just Spain.

So in answer to trying to wrap your head around protesters throwing stuff at the Mona Lisa, so there have been two famous protest actions involving throwing things at famous paintings. The one you were referring to with the Mona Lisa was actually soup that was thrown at it. This was in protest against the way farmers were being treated at the time and demanding healthy and sustainable food. The other famous one was when people threw also soup at Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers'. That one WAS Just Stop Oil protesting against lack of divestment from oil based energy and the cost of living crisis. In both cases, no oil product was used, even if it were paint it wouldn't be oil based unless it was oil paint which would never be used bc it is thick and dries incredibly slowly. If you were gonna use a paint you'd use acrylic which is water-based. Anyway, in both cases those targets were chosen BECAUSE they were behind a glass protective screen, there was never any intent to actually damage these paintings. And finally, it got your attention didn't it? The point is to do something controversial to draw attention to a particular cause. A lot of people are very judgemental about these particular protest methods but have rarely done much research on it and are often unfamiliar with the way protest movements work. The point is rarely sympathy the point of direct action is always to disrupt, which can make people unpopular but change is rarely achieved by asking nicely. Regarding the accusation of alienating people one of the Sunflowers protesters responded “But this is not The X Factor, we are not trying to make friends here, we are trying to make change, and unfortunately this is the way that change happens.”

this happening on the back of the napoleonic wars is like the spanish flu, the great depression, and the dust bowl happening in the shadow of WW1 going into WW2. aside from the reprieve of the roaring 20s those eras must've appeared truly apocalyptic from certain vistas. i think the modern view of what hard times actually are is comically skewed and should almost all modern people from the "1st world" be plunged into the epicenter of these events, that took untold millions of lives, they might not see too many sunsets before they give out.
