European brown bears tend to more skittish (like American black bears), as they’ve been living in close proximity to humans for longer. Also, I want to say European brown bears are slightly smaller than some North American brown bears, so that may play a part as well.
@@B30WULF2 Yup. Also at least here in Finland brown bears tend to be mostly harmless, unless provoked and or they have cubs with them. But most of the time they tend to stay away from humans as much as possible.

@@rompsa923 honestly, in the US and Canada brown bears probably generally aren’t that much more aggressive than European brown bears, but you generally have to go into their territory to encounter them than the other way around. That probably adds to the chances of aggression.
Bread is not only a huge thing in western europe. Every european loves bread and is almost considered sacred food (in Poland at least)

It's interesting to see that in many cultures bread is respected like in Persian. I think It's common in Turkish too and in Middle-Easterners as a whole.

@@StoryLover-7 One parent is Serbian, the other is Hungarian. He did a DNA test and he has a lot of Bosnian genes according to it in case you wonder why some people call him Bosnian.
So yea, Estonian for us Finns is like a funny sounding accent of Finnish, but Hungarian itself is a few thousand years ago apart from us, eventhough also being of the Uralic language branch.
Narive Hungarian here. It is strange, but when I hear Finnish, I don't understand any of it, yet the melody and rhythm of the language feels somehow familiar, close to Hungarian. Cheers to Finland

The reason why we eat dinner late is the same reason why siesta is a thing, the sun.
The sun sets later in Southern Europe which is also why the typical work shift is not 9 to 5 but 9 to 6 with an hour extra of lunch time.

I am from Europe and first time I saw the "so called beer-bike" in real life was in Nashville, Tennessee, USA :) Of course, I have seen videos and pictures of those things before.
I think the reason his English is so good is that a lot of young Europeans grow up seeing basically the same stuff as young Americans. I have a lot of European friends and we all watched the same stuff on Netflix, the same anime shows. The Internet made it so that when things become popular online anywhere, it spreads everywhere.
I think it's more due to the fact that he has lived in the US for many years.
He lived in the US. I know many people who consume Anglo-Saxon culture and they still speak English with a strong Eastern European accent (probably including me to an extent).
János (the guy running the channel) is a Serbian guy with (Hungarian and Romanian ancestry as well), who lived like half of his life in the US, so I guess that explains his accent. He also did a video explaining his results from a DNA test (23andme I think), in case you are interested.
He does many videos regarding the balkans, especially for people outside of the region, which are both funny and quite informative.
I highly recommend the Balkan stereotypes (both parts), as well as the Romanian and Eastern European stereotypes videos, as they are quite good as well.
There’s a psychological syndrome called Paris syndrome. People get so excited about visiting it and are so disappointed about it that it leads to depression etc.
Specifically a Japanese problem though. It got better now, but Paris was so overhyped in Japan (including by traveling companies) and it was seen by some of those tourists as the worldwide center of civilization or something. Truly, no place on earth could live up that thoses unrealistic expectations. Paris is cool if you like history and architecture, but if you're annoyed when the people aren't friendly or if you dislike uncleanliness it's better to go somewhere else. It's just a city.

@@jeffslote9671 At the very least the term "Paris Syndrome" factually comes from that very Japanese problem. It was very wild compared with other examples: some Japanese tourists were hospitalized from the psychological trauma.

Paris is a known big touristic city because of its monuments, its architecture and scenery, I don't know where that person went in Paris but he probably didn't make the good choices

Just FYI, the protesters are throwing soup at the Mona Lisa, not paint. And not to defend the tactic, but every time it happens it makes international headlines, so it's actually pretty effective if all you are trying to do is get a topic into headlines.
It's effective at getting them negative attention.
The reaction they get mostly is "these climate activists are pretty dumb".

As an Irish person, the more places you visit in mainland Europe, the more you understand it. Common travel area has that effect, and so much of the recent history is very much shared. You definitely know you're in different countries, I'm just saying I can see where the grouping us all together comes from
As an American, it feels the same when someone who’s not from your state groups everyone in your state together. As an Ohioan, I can say someone from Toledo has very little in common with someone from Cincinnati, same with someone from Akron and someone from Marietta. It’s so different based on your city or county.
I’ve noticed Californians in particular are really bad about lumping everything that isn’t them together into “flyover country” and stereotyping them.

Austrian here: Our bread culture is similar to Germany's, perhaps milder.
There is a TON of variety of bread in bakeries and even supermarkets

When i was a kid back in the 80s, it was common to hear many corny "smart American vs dumb Polack" jokes. There is no large Polish immigrant community in my state. Where did this stereotype come from, and how in the world did it make it to small town Missouri?
Amerykańscy biali protestanci zawsze mieli problem z uważaniem katolików i Słowian za "białych". Postulatami KKK były Stany Zjednoczone wolne od czarnych, Żydów i katolików. Dlatego bywało że kaptury atakowały w Stanach polskie wesela. A co do polish jokes, większość obecnych Polish Americans to potomkowie chłopów z obecnych terenów Polski Południowo-Wschodniej i Ukrainy Zachodniej. Te tereny przed I wojną światową należały do Austro-Węgier i były jedną z najbiedniejszych prowincji tego kraju. Po prostu chłopi polscy, ukraińscy i biedni Żydzi imigrowali do USA za chlebem. Większość ludności w tamtym okresie była niepiśmienna a tereny Polski (Polska przez 123 lata jako państwo nie istniała) jako jedne z ostatnich zniosły pańszczyznę, która nie tylko niewoliła chłopów ale też uniemożliwiała im imigrację do miast i podjęcia innej pracy. Trzeba też dodać duży procent analfabetów wśród ludności chłopskiej, bez względu na narodowość czy wyznanie. Dlatego gdy Polacy z Galicji przypłynęli do USA i zaczęli pracować byli brani za idiotów bo trafili do kompletnie odmiennego im środowiska gdzie zamast w polu pracowali w fabrykach, nie znali praktycznie mechanizacji i musieli przystosować się do życia w ogromnych metropoliach, gdzie każdy jest im obcy i nie zawaha się ich oszukać, gdzie mówi się w totalnie obcym języku, gdzie taki Nowy Jork czy Chicago są skrajnie odmienne niż miasteczka gdzie przyjeżdżali na dzień targowy. Powiedziałabym że to jest szok podobny do tego jaki przeżywają Rosjanie z prowincji gdy przyjeżdżają do Nowego Jorku (był nawet taki dokument).

Living Ironically in Europe is so good. There are so many videos that are worth checking out. He made videos about Balkan and Eastern European stereotypes too. He also explains historical events (like the 1956 Hungarian revolution) and why two certain countries love or hate each other.

Another reason why people think the Dutch became blunt is the constant threat of the water. Large swathes of land got flooded because say one baron neglected their levies. If the choice is, insult said baron or drown, the choice is easy.
Note though that all too often Dutch use our directness as an excuse for rudeness. Dutch without a filter will have issues as well. We are well aware if somebody asks us whether or not we like a sweater that outright stating we do not is not always appropriate.

I, as a born German, can confirm following stereotypes of ourselfs:
1. we are iron about rules.
2. we are addicted to introducing even more rules.
3. we are over-disciplined.
4. we don't cry.
5. we don't laugh either.
6. we drink beer like tapwater and loath wine.

When he made his Hercules movie (one of his first American movies) Arnold's accent was so thick that the cast and crew wouldn't understand a thing he said. So they overdubbed his lines with an American voice actor. After the movie he began working on lessening his accent.
What is he talking about with punctuality and trains in Germany...The Deutsche Bahn is the least punctual train provider in all of Europe. So I think it's pretty fair to be annoyed by that 🤣

thats wrong. it is NOT the least punctual one, in fact Germany has also most pressure (by being the center of Europe and transit country Nr. 1 - and the traffic exploded in the 21. century (from roads to trains, from packages to internet). Smaller neighbors with similar circumstances like the Netherlands also have similar problems. We also talk here about the most populated regions of Europe. apart form that. Its just stupid to exaggerate die Deutsche Bahn situation (Germany just complain more - which makes it at least also more likely that in the end something happens - punctuality and efficiency is a mindset in the first place (and thats a Central Europe thing). People who really believe that the Deutsche Bahn is worse should really study some youtube videos on other regions of Europe (when the Locomotive breaks down, people get out of the train on the tracks, make fire, sleep outdoor till maybe next day another Locomotive comes for an exchange - which later breaks down again). There are also other differences. Germany has high developed country problems and complain from a first world perspective (with the right intention to keep it that way). Same is true for the internet. Also here some people exaggerate and believing nonsense like 'slowest internet in the world' and other nonsense. The ones who believe that just show that they like stereotypes more than being smart and do proper researches (and every online gamer should know that this is not true despite from problems - i mean especially in MMORPGs, Shooters etc. the combination of fast internet AND ping counts - and Germans are not among the ones with the worse internet - but again with the most traffic/biggest hubs etc.)
It's a popular stereotype but as someone who's taking trains across the western part of the continent on a regular base - they're really really not. Especially local trains run super punctual and smooth compared to elsewhere. The ICE? ... well it's hit and miss here.
I think Romomania is worse, but yeah, German Trains are bad.
Also the Internet. Get outside of the cities and it sucks bad.
DB is good untill you are in city, the moment you get out it's hit or miss. When it's good it's very good when it's bad it's really bad
For example once I was coming from Stuttgart and thanks to DB they cancelled one connecting train, I had to sit an entire night on the train station in the middle of nowhere.
The ones about the Balkans and about Eastern Europe are so much better. Probably because Janos, the creator, is a Hungarian Serb (I think) living in Romania, so he understands the culture, the local memes and rivalries so much better. He even did a short history of Romania recently which, despite some inaccuracies, did a great job of presenting an abridged history of the country that explains why it is how it is. I'm Romanian btw :)
I, as a born German, like to declare following clichés about our folks *not true*:
1. we are NOT always on spot - but still hate being otto time.
2. we do NOT live in fachwerk houses.
3. we do NOT devour tons of sauerkraut. fun fact: most of us don't even like it that much.
4. we do NOT constantly yell.
5. we are NOT hicks. In fact, we are proud to have brought forth many high-class authors and poets such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Wilhelm Busch, Anette von Droste-Hülsoff, Heinz Erhardt, Michael Ende and many more.
6. Bavaria is NOT "typical German". on the contrary, most Bavarians wish to have Bavaria be separated from Germany geographically and politically!

Btw Germans and Austrians are basically the same and always was. Austrians started to claim that they are something different after ww2 to avoid war guilt, completely ignoring the Austrian painter or that many many high ranking NSDAP members and a large part of the SS-Leadership were Austrians as well.

Yeah, before German unification, Austrians were regarded as much a part of the German family as anyone else. That Austria was left out of German unification was just an incidental consequence of Austria already having its own multi-ethnic empire at the time. Anschluss wasn't the idea of Austrian painter and friends, it was a popular idea in Austria for the entire interwar period when said multi-ethnic empire was no more.

Scandinavia itself is the peninsula both Norway and Sweden is located on but Denmark also counts due to ones having land on the peninsula and also their ties to both other countries.

@@antonakesson No Finland is literally geographically within Scandinavia. I know there is a heated debat about this but Finland is still apart of the Scandinavian peninsula. And technically Finland is not Nordic, it's Finno Ugric. It maybe listed as one of the Nordic nations but it's actually not.

Regarding Germany and Austria and perception of each other I'd say we Germans always see Austria as quaint and sometimes as a bit hillbilly, while the Austrians opinion depends on what part of Germany one would refer to, like everything not South-Germany they call Piefke, which is a derogatory term hailing from a Prussian (I think) general.
I technically have Prussian ancestry.
I think a few people look down upon Prussia (to my dismay), even to this day.
Most of the time, I say I am of German descent.
Prussian composer of military music. An insult meant to imply that Prussians are pompous militarists.

German here (and of course, you saw this coming, right😅) the geographical borders or nation of today is younger than the US (1990). We, the Germans, as a population, are much older than the USA. The idea or that which has always connected us, which is our language. The Holy Roman Empire and its rulers mostly ruled their own territories, but they were also dependent on one another. For example, the emperor always had to be elected, there was no hereditary monarchy.

I wouldnt consider finland part of Scandinavia. To be Scandinavia is Demark, Sweden and Norway.
A lot of these stereotypes change depending on were you live. I am Spanish and in Spain Germans and British people are stereotypically depicted as red and drunk. This is because, for us, they are tourists that get burnt by the sun and party all night. (Sadly a metric for when the summer season starts is when the first brit/german person dies of a balcony related accident)
You should check out all of his stereotype videos, they always make me chuckle even if it’s making fun of my country.

took a bus from London to Amsterdam when I studied abroad. Loved the city, including the coffeeshops! It had a feel of a more relaxed kinda cigar lounge. along with the heinekin brewery and a canal tour and just exploring the city, it was a nice little long weekend away!

To be fair to the Austrians, there are also very diverse. A Tyrolian sounds nothing like a guy from Vienna. Schwarzenegger is from Styria, which is again a different tune.
And another funny fact: The dubbing voice of Schwarzenegger is the same dubbing voice of Sylvester Stalone in German. Which makes things really weird.

God, VTH, that paint mention got me thinking of the whole research paper I wrote about Climate protests for school.
I'm an expat living in the Netherlands for three years now and to me, Dutch people seem cold and unwelcoming, if I am honest. You will never ever receive an invitation for dinner or for coffee at their house, most you get is "Hi", of the "I'm saying Hi, just for the sake of saying Hi, not because I meant it" variety. They seem a bit insolent at times, especially at ques and lines, they like to overtake expats and immigrants., cause it's their country and your less than them. Their honesty is often mixed with sarcasm or irony, in my experience, so you have to figure out if they are joking or if they are really honest. All this is extremely foreign to me, because I come from a Balkan country, where neighbours are often invited for dinners and coffee, you don't say Hi to people you don't know, you always show respect by letting others overtake you at the line or the que, especially if it's an old person or a lady, and honesty means hard honesty, no jokes, no smiles, no snarky remarks and fakeness. I have to compliment them on these things though: they have built an amazing country for themselves. Their Infrastructure, agriculture and industry is top knotch.
I loved France when I went and it was during the era of "freedom fries" when everyone thought France hated us because of our then-president. The people I encountered were actually super kind and considerate, even when I couldn't find the correct French word for whatever I needed or if I had a hard time understanding what they were asking.
I remember a looooong time ago I took a French Language Class. I remember my professor telling us about this article of a poll by Paris Match magazine asking French people in various parts of France who the most obnoxious tourists were. The top vote getter was... Parisians.

3/4 of my mother’s family came from Prussia during the Franco-Prussian war and the other part from the Netherlands. This explains so much of how my mom was raised and probably why my mom did forgo the strict rules she was raised with us and gave us more freedom growing up. Side note, I have ancestors from my dad’s side who were from Inverness. I look forward to learning more about that area❤

23:15 This reminds me of doing a country report on Portugal in a college class. Some sources I read mentioned how the southern region was seen as lazy by people from the northern region because of their siesta tradition.
So it seems this isn't just a Northern European stereotype of Southern Europe, but one shared within many Southern European countries.
I've read Italy is similar with the more industrial north seeing the south as lazy. Wouldn't surprise me if Spain wasn't similar with the mountainous north seeing the south as lazy, too.
Also, I'm autistic and one of my special interests is sleep science and the siesta is a healthier sleep pattern than the post-industrial era practice of 8hrs solid in one go. There have been a number of health benefits drawn from the mid-afternoon nap including alertness/ wakefulness, increased productivity and better memory. Additionally it is a time of day a large number of factors come together in all of our bodies and boost the drive to sleep. Lots of factors have been used to try and explain it including the aforementioned hard work and heat, but also post-lunch drowsiness, our circadian rhythms naturally make us tired at that time of the day, and we have a drop in cortisol decreasing our alertness and making us sleepier. If we didn't have these long work days and artificial light most of us would be doing it and indeed it's actually v common in a lot of the world, not just Spain.

About the Dutch vs. Flemish thing.
Native Dutch speakers will easily understand Flemish and say it's the same language and vice-versa.
I was born to Dutch parents in Ireland so the only Dutch I was raised with was theirs, so when I moved to the Netherlands for college I spoke fluently, but I could NOT understand Flemish at all
Been in the Netherlands for almost 8 years now, and to me Flemish is still as different from Dutch as German is.
I would personally characterise the difference to be closer to the difference between Irish & Scots Gaelic, which are two related but distinct languages that have an enormous overlap, rather than Scottish English and Californian English which are (so far) the same language.
Just such a strange phenomenon. It's somewhere between a dialect and a language if I were to be completely honest.
At 24:40 - the bears in Europe (including this one in Finland) are brown bears - not quite as big and aggressive as grizzlies but quite intimidating and dangerous on their own right. The one in the video seems quite small though - probably a bit over a year old just detached from the mother.
