Iroh reminds him to use his breath of fire to keep warm at the siege of the north - the same Iroh that invented lightning redirection by observing water benders and told him to keep a solid foundation (an importaint part of earthbending) during the agni kai against Commander Zhao - it’s an airbending move, and Iroh is a master at learning from others.
It’s not that they heat or cool the air, it’s a breathing technique they use to regulate their own body temperature. It states it in the novel ‘The Rise of Kyoshi’ and I thought they mentioned it in one of the animated series too but I could be wrong on that
That actually makes a lot of sense. And it’s not like the show was taking shortcuts with the clothes either like some animes since the characters all frequently changed clothes except Aang
When you think about it, water and air both, at some point, a crossover with fire. Water benders can increase or decrease water temperature to create steam, liquid water, or ice. Air benders can manipulate temperature of the air. Firebenders really get kinda shafted, when you get down to it. A powerful enough water bender could actually create explosions from manipulating temperatures in ice, and manipukate the temperature of water in the air (and thus air) to prevent fire benders from igniting anything. Likewise, a strong enough air bender could cool down the air around a fire bender such that they can't ignite anything (or just remove the air, but that isn't a crossover section). It's long been my opinion that, especially as water also got "healing", fire should have had the ability to restore life itself (which would also have made for the possibility of a cool Ozai return plot, if done well).
It's a known technique for multiple forms of bending to use your breath to regulate body temperature, fire bending simply applies or extracts heat, water bending does the same, but specifically in the water in the body of the user, air does the same, but with the air in and around your body, I think earth is the only one that doesn't have a shown or referenced body temperature regulation technique.
Air is an incredible insulator, most forms of insulation simply use fluffy stuff to have big pockets of air The reason we mortals need jackets and blankets etc is because the fluff and sheathing of the coat etc holds the same air in the same spot, Normally new air is constantly moving and reintroduced to our skin cooling us off, Ang could hold air in place and be walking around with a six inch invisible jacket I think the biggest concern would be ground contact, if he's actually touching the snow then his feet are gonna be cold, so is Ang walking on air like 2 inches of the ground
I love ATLA so much. After I took Eastern Philosophy courses, I went back to watch ATLA and the world became so much more beautiful; not just the ATLA world but this world too.
Considering Iro studied around the world to develop different fire ending techniques (lightning bending by waring water benders- cannon; studying search bending to learn to "break someone's root"- theory) he probably taught Zuko the hot air breathing by learning about the air nation!
Actually it's because he's also part firebender. The eternal flame within keeps him warm it also keeps him from sweating unless he wants to. Therefore producing his own materials.... Although utilizing purely only air you can actually control all four elements in the real world
I believe Tenzin said that Airbenders used airbending to warm themselves. The real life Tibetan Buddhist monks were the inspiration for Airbenders & they use Tumo meditation to warm themselves. Same concept though. Monks wearing only their robes in a harsh mountain climate using their spiritual practices to keep themselves warm.
I could have sworn that Pre-Korra there was an official explanation going around that Airbenders could "Regulate their body temperature with their breathing."
There is an actual meditation technique that the user can warm their body up to 7ºC. They can survive without clothes in extreme cold regions with this technique. Since the Air nomads are based in spiritualistic cultures who uses many meditation techniques, this makes even more sense.
One thing that’s really interesting about this is that I think it’s probably based off Tibetan tummo breathing practices. If I remember right (and I could be wrong!), there’s some science to back up that tummo breathing can actually help the practitioner retain body heat or else endure the cold.
Super insulated clothing probably same like some artic divingsuits. Not thick but nothing gets through. People underestimate how cold it is high up in the air
I honestly thought they'd just gather and condense air around themselves in cold weather, like how furred animals keep warm by trapping air in their fur, creating an insulant.
Basically its the same principle that nasa used when a space shuttle's heater failed. If you didn't know, the skin radiates heat. If you trap the air around the skin, you stay warm. In space, you stay perfectly still. In this series, you just keep the air still.
Air bending is the most overpowered, thereby requiring the most discipline to both utilize and master. As such, i believe this is why the air benders were so spiritually connected
You know that is close to the fire bending ability with breathing. They both have some basis in reality because if you control your breathing you can warm yourself up or cool yourself down. I can warm myself but I can’t cool down. David Blane also uses these techniques as well as Tibetan monks.
That makes sense. Same way how Zahier was able to fly. Just instead of cold and heat your small aura bubble to move you with ease like a muscle flex when walking or running.
He was about the only person doing decently in the desert as well. He was probably having trouble focusing his air bending since he was also so upset about Appa being stolen.
A bending style that can control the temperature around you, being able to literally suck the air out of peoples lungs and even allows you to fly without the need of a glider? I'd say that's and damn good element to learn.
Ironically, in matters of strength I would rate: 1. Airbender (floating, killing somebody buy asphyxia) 2. Waterbender (controlling people) 3. Earthbender (for lava control and a few other tricks) 4. Firebender (cool have lightnings, but that's it). So, its fun to see that the most peaceful ones are the ones that could be legite more dangerous
It's surprising how effective this is. You'd think water benders doing blood bending of their own blood would be the most effective way to maintain body temperature, since it affects your internal temperature, but I guess bending the air around you would be highly effective since you'd never feel the touch of cold or extreme heat. Though, he should still feel the cold or heat with any body parts directly touching anything with air in between
If you watch legends of Korra season three, I don’t know what episode Tenzin Ang son actually explains that the uniform that the monks give you keeps you warm also allowing you to move freely
Fun fact That airbending ability is based on a real technique that people can learn Tibetan monks are known for an ability that allowed them to fully regulate their internal temperature, allowing them to stay toasty in cold climates dispite wearing thin clothing My late father learned this technique and used it as a party trick in the winter
This is actually the reason fur and fluffy coats work. The hairs impede much of the movement, and a layer of warm, stationary air forms close to the body, acting as a barrier against cold air moving around and drawing heat away.
Honestly this makes sense since air is surprisingly a good insulator. It is one of the reasons why igloos work so well. Yes they are made from snow but that snow has a lot of air pockets. Not only does it help make the igloo strong yet light enough to support itself and stop the wind but they help keep the warmth leaving our bodies and keep it inside the igloo.
i think it makes more sense anatomically speaking that he applies air bending to his breathing and control of the air inside of his lungs + oxygen in his blood
So if you pay attention, Aang did wear an extra layer or two in the water tribes area. It wasn't much extra though, like a longer robe but this explains why he gets away with that
Well yeah, theoretically firebenders should be able to do this too. We see in the season 1 finale that Zuko was able to use his hands to release heat on ice and melt it, made even more impressive since he was underwater when he did this. This means that firebenders should be able to do that internally and keep themselves warm whenever they need to, though I don't think they could do the reverse and cool themselves.
Uncle Iroh explained to Zuko that it's actually a breathing technique and Zuko even utilizes it in ATLA, you don't even need to go to LoK to get this information.
As a Michigander who is sitting inside while its pushing 80°F outsode with like 70% humidity... I'm not gonna lie I want to be an air bender just for that ability.
Let's use a little logic here... he's an Airbender. Air currents and direction can influence the temperature around something. So, by using his bending, he can affect the air around him, ergo the temperature, too.
I don't know if this was ever a popular theory and I don't know where I heard it from but it goes kinda like: every bending ability is just telekinesis and the characters are all just limited by their culture and social constructs. Every one should be able to bend all 4 elements (and more) and the main reason the avatar can, has to do with their connection to their past lives in the cycle. This goes even further since time, death and pants are illusions but that's too much to get into. This air conditioning ability sounds like technically fire bending and it could be, just get dust particles in an air stream and heat them to the point of incandescense, bonus points if you use energy from your own xi or from the sun. But fire benders don't air condition because they don't believe they can, and air benders don't make fire because they don't believe they can. Now, yes, I realize that some of the deeper lore contradict this theory and that these shows are full to the brim with characters overcoming obstacles by changing their limiting beliefs but no one (even characters who have achieved enlightenment) but the avatar have ever actually bent another element without using the element they were born to, but I still really like this theory and I think it can teach us something about ourselves
Fire is not dust particles incandesceing, it's plasma, superheated gas. Carbon particles just make it red. Does this theory mean Momo could actually bend that giant bolder if he believed in himself? No but seriously, the Lore does very much contradict you there are physical parts of the body that you can punch really hard to make somebody stop bending, that ain't cultural.
This was revealed in ATLA, not LoK. Iroh tells it to Zuko before he infiltrates the northern water tribe, and said it was a trick he picked up from studying air benders and adapted for fire bending. Kind of like how lightning bending was based on water bending but adapted for fire benders.
The reality of it is though that it was because he’s a cartoon character that was well known in that outfit :p and they didn’t think of how strange it actually looked until they came up with a explanation in Korra 😆
OP completely forgetting the episode in The Rock, where Iroh teaches Zuko this exact breathing technique of Airbenders which allows him to create fire in the "icebox"...
It's not really just airbending. It's a breathing technique. Jong Jong also brought Aang on top of a mountain for him to learn proper breath control for firebending so, more like another breathing technique. But to put it simple, both of these are meditation techniques. Mind over body and so. That's why the cold doesn't bother Aang much. But ultimately everyone could learn it not just airbenders.
Just like how water benders can turn water into ice and back. And some earth benders can turn rock into lava. This makes me think that air benders could do fire bending if they were more aggressive.
In the real world, this can also be achieved through various breathing techniques. Depending on how you control your breath, you can heat up your eternal temperature.
I always thought that Aang just used airbending to bend his breath to keep him warm, Similar to how Zuko was able to swim in the frozen water without getting hypothermia
I think it is less about the airbending but more about the fact that air is a great isolator when used right, mainly because gases have a lot of spaces i between them, energy transfers literaly need contact between molecules to interact which less likely and by so you condense/ make it less condensed and by so cooling/ heating the body by making the molecules less or more likely to interact

I think thats different. Somehow they are raising the body temp.
I always just figured he was used to the cold from living on a high peak where there would be cold and harsh winds.
It’s not that they heat or cool the air, it’s a breathing technique they use to regulate their own body temperature. It states it in the novel ‘The Rise of Kyoshi’ and I thought they mentioned it in one of the animated series too but I could be wrong on that
The fact that airbender don’t have to worry about exposure as much as others is just way too good
THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE BEST IDEA INVENTED!! GOODBYE TOO MUCH HEAT!! HELLO COLD!!
It makes sense, they can make the air molecules closer for cold and further for hot
That actually makes a lot of sense. And it’s not like the show was taking shortcuts with the clothes either like some animes since the characters all frequently changed clothes except Aang
Lol love the falling into a ditch and then the way your character stared at the screen like: “really??” 😂😂
Air is an incredible insulator, most forms of insulation simply use fluffy stuff to have big pockets of air
The reason we mortals need jackets and blankets etc is because the fluff and sheathing of the coat etc holds the same air in the same spot,
Normally new air is constantly moving and reintroduced to our skin cooling us off,
Ang could hold air in place and be walking around with a six inch invisible jacket
I think the biggest concern would be ground contact, if he's actually touching the snow then his feet are gonna be cold, so is Ang walking on air like 2 inches of the ground
I love ATLA so much. After I took Eastern Philosophy courses, I went back to watch ATLA and the world became so much more beautiful; not just the ATLA world but this world too.
The comics show his ability does have its limits. He has warmer clothing the second time he visits the Southern Water Tribe.
Man explains plot point from literally episode one like it’s a huge mystery of the series
And he flew through the desert looking for appa. And never got worn out.
Super insulated clothing probably same like some artic divingsuits. Not thick but nothing gets through. People underestimate how cold it is high up in the air
He, like everyone else, heats the air in his lungs, then breathes it out. He specifically then bends it around his body.
I honestly thought they'd just gather and condense air around themselves in cold weather, like how furred animals keep warm by trapping air in their fur, creating an insulant.
also their air temples r literally in the mountains which is much colder, but they all still wear the same clothes !
As such, i believe this is why the air benders were so spiritually connected
all four elements have the ability to control the temperature of said element; it's just very rare for earth bending
You know that is close to the fire bending ability with breathing. They both have some basis in reality because if you control your breathing you can warm yourself up or cool yourself down. I can warm myself but I can’t cool down. David Blane also uses these techniques as well as Tibetan monks.
Mans just Cooked like thanksgiving dinner 🙏💯 nice video
That makes sense. Same way how Zahier was able to fly. Just instead of cold and heat your small aura bubble to move you with ease like a muscle flex when walking or running.
He was about the only person doing decently in the desert as well. He was probably having trouble focusing his air bending since he was also so upset about Appa being stolen.
Don't forget he survived being frozen solid in an ice cap for 100 years, his body was hardened into being cold resistant outside of bending
A bending style that can control the temperature around you, being able to literally suck the air out of peoples lungs and even allows you to fly without the need of a glider? I'd say that's and damn good element to learn.
Ironically, in matters of strength I would rate:
1. Airbender (floating, killing somebody buy asphyxia)
2. Waterbender (controlling people)
3. Earthbender (for lava control and a few other tricks)
Though, he should still feel the cold or heat with any body parts directly touching anything with air in between
We also know that Airbenders can do this passively seeing as Aang is unconscious and shows no signs of being cold
If you watch legends of Korra season three, I don’t know what episode Tenzin Ang son actually explains that the uniform that the monks give you keeps you warm also allowing you to move freely
I love how you make this sound like it's a completely unknown thing, airbenders and firebenders can control the temperature of their body
Dang that detail flew over my head and i watched Kora 3x :D
Fun fact
That airbending ability is based on a real technique that people can learn
Tibetan monks are known for an ability that allowed them to fully regulate their internal temperature, allowing them to stay toasty in cold climates dispite wearing thin clothing
My late father learned this technique and used it as a party trick in the winter
Not only does it help make the igloo strong yet light enough to support itself and stop the wind but they help keep the warmth leaving our bodies and keep it inside the igloo.
when you realize air benders can make friction in the hair creating heat in the exact way a firenender does
i think it makes more sense anatomically speaking that he applies air bending to his breathing and control of the air inside of his lungs + oxygen in his blood
The deadliest skill which was enough to protect himself with the Army of firebenders without any other bending skill than Air
Iroh knew this and adapted it aswell, even passing it to zuko, which is seem during his underwater exploration of the North Pole, in search of Aang
On top of that Aang spent 100 years in an iceberg, he had a decent training
So if you pay attention, Aang did wear an extra layer or two in the water tribes area. It wasn't much extra though, like a longer robe but this explains why he gets away with that
Well yeah, theoretically firebenders should be able to do this too. We see in the season 1 finale that Zuko was able to use his hands to release heat on ice and melt it, made even more impressive since he was underwater when he did this.
This means that firebenders should be able to do that internally and keep themselves warm whenever they need to, though I don't think they could do the reverse and cool themselves.
tbh, I would've just accepted that he was in an iceberg for 100 years though
I’m going with the fact that he was stuck in an iceberg for 100 years and became half ice half human.
I mean Zuko did use an air bending technique to resist the cold in his cell during his time at the boiling rock.
It's because tibetan and shaolin monks were said to have this ability. Scientists even tested it.
He's a monk. And monks are famous for this.
Let's use a little logic here... he's an Airbender. Air currents and direction can influence the temperature around something. So, by using his bending, he can affect the air around him, ergo the temperature, too.
Temperature manipulation is common. Advanced waterbenders can freeze the water they bend or melt the ice. Firebenders… obvious.
Firebenders can withstand the cold too. Iroh tell zuko about controling his chi to warm his body
Wait! You mean whenever Aang is in the cold, he's constantly airbending? Like subconsciously?!
Damn!
I mean, he was literally found in an iceberg on episode one, so yea I think some of us may have noticed
He was getting drug around the north pole in a robe unconscious. Thats not a breathing thing you can just learn.
So, basically plot armor... but for temperature.
“-in the Legend of Korra”
You just lost me with that.
Airbenders and fire bender can control their inner temperature
*YEAH THAT'S CALLED WATERBENDING...*
Changing air temperature? Never thought of that. That would be so op in the summer🥵
I think it’s because he’s a monk and in the real world monks train their bodies to withstand extreme cold using breathing techniques
I think I'm in love. Maybe they could react to some of the roles played by all the characters? Definitely TSATS!
Sounds to me like they pulled a star wars and retroactively created an in universe explanation for something that was never meant to be given too much thought. But I like the explanation so I accept it
