Carrier RTU fixed metering device to TXV conversion

  • It's been a while since I did a conversion from the "Manifold header" multiple piston metering devices to a Thermal Expansion Valve feeder setup.
    I used to do this a lot on Carrier and Trane RTU's. They operate better than original setup in these cases.

    My heart goes out to you working in that 110+*F heat. And then on a roof....wow. And here I thought Texas HVAC work was tough!

    Great video. Thank you! I am headed to do the same on 4 years old 10 ton RTU tomorrow. These damn header assembly is on back order and estimated time is 2 months… It’s end of March in Memphis now. So, usual temperature at the end of May is 90-95F here….

    Great job!
    I've been told by some techs that this kind of repair is not possible.

      George Ballard How is it NOT possible? LOL
      I've done this a few dozen times but it had been a while.

      Matthew Maslak I might have some really old video of this mod but maybe not from start to finish like this.
      I've done this several times to Trane Voyager and Precedent units.

    • @hackfreehvac
      @hackfreehvac  Před 9 lety +7

      2020tesla I've done it a bunch of times but not in a while.
      The OEM part, which Carrier distributor doesn't even stock, costs more than a TXV and the small copper tubing.
      It is also almost impossible to un-sweat the copper out of each bell end at the coil without at least one tearing apart or breaking clean off right down to the galvanized plate.
      That is why even the Carrier distributor reps will be like "Sure you don't want to just order an entire new coil"?
      The mod to a TXV is not just a repair it is also an improvement over the original design. Which sucks.

    Good job bro but i must say you need a set of sporlan guages. No hoses and wires through doors. Its perfect for commercial units and refrigeration.

    • @hackfreehvac
      @hackfreehvac  Před 9 lety

      ben kubesh There is a hole on top with a plug that you can remove to drop the hoses through but it's just easier to run them out the bottom and hold the panel over the opening.
      I see lots of guys running the new electronic ones but they look too delicate to survive my use.

    No weighing in the charge? Does the txv conversion basically change what was on the data plate for factory charge?

  • @Straycurrent
    @Straycurrent Před 9 lety

    Great job. I hope you were able to rig some shade while reworking that coil -- the sun must've been brutal. Did you use your ordinary brazing rod on the feeder lines or something with more silver than you use on larger piping?

    • @hackfreehvac
      @hackfreehvac  Před 9 lety

      Straycurrent It was brutal. I actually felt sick at about 2PM when I realized I skipped lunch and hadn't taken a break.
      I need to get an umbrella to screw to the side of the units.
      I do however have that awesome little Stanley blower fan thing that keeps a breeze on me.

    what size feeder tubes did you use? I tried this for the first time about a month ago
    with a adjustable TXV and 1/8" feeders to be safe and it worked great.

      So how are the feeds going to feed properly without a distributor orifice??
      Thank u ❤

  • @maxeyac
    @maxeyac Před 5 lety +1

    Why didnt you heat them and blow nitrogen to clear like your other video?

    • @hackfreehvac
      @hackfreehvac  Před 5 lety +3

      Replacing fixed metering devices with a TXV has always been Plan A.
      The reason I use the nitrogen with heat trick is that most of these units are heat pumps with complicated check valve loops that repurpose part of each coil differently for heat vs cool.
      On a straight cool line this unit it doesn't have that mess and I can upgrade it to a TXV type.

    The feeders are 1/8” OD? Like Supco BC-4 (0.64) ID. Made one with those, but had very high head pressure with TXV.

  • @davemiller5847
    @davemiller5847 Před 9 lety

    Nice work, how are the feeder tubes sized? You need a 10"X10" camping canopy to set up to get out of the sun. thanks for posting.

    • @hackfreehvac
      @hackfreehvac  Před 9 lety

      Dave Miller 1/8" copper tube. Probably about as small as I could go before it would start effecting the feed.

    • @chrissadventuresinlife3584
      @chrissadventuresinlife3584 Před 3 lety

      2:35 that’s a scroll compressor but carrier used those on their r 22 system along with the newer 410a systems
      It appears to be r22
