  • This was a no cooling call on a Carrier package unit that had multiple restrictions in the metering devices, I defrosted the unit and submitted a quote to the customer.

    Ive got 2 of these units at my facility. One of them mustve been having this issue for years. I havent had to check the charge and it seemed to be working fine until one day the evaporator was frozen solid. Pulled the charge and it had 3 extra lbs of r22 in it. vacuumed it down to 500 microns and left the vac on it for a day. Put the correct charge in it and immediately saw the problem was the metering devices. Hoping they let me replace this unit because it looks like a pain to replace those😅

      Well if u get these just know that the econ is always bad on these water leaking into the circuit board, they added a shield but nope that didn't help, also these have split coils like some trains difference is the train units split half way

    Watching these videos while I'm entering my courses for HVAC-R really help me out when it comes to applying what I learned. When I first started watching I would be like "what is this man talking about", lingo wise etc. Now when I study on my terms and understand how the unit should operate I apply that to thse videos and it's amazing how the information retains itself in my brain. Thanks a bunch and keep making these videos!!!

    We had a similar situation here in Georgia. Carrier RTU but a 10 ton with one 5 ton Curcuit restricted. Did not want to repair. We told them we would just let it run in the good Curcuit till they mad a decision . Called another company hooked up the Curcuit and caused a leak and killed the compressor . Lucky we had service invoice and email to clear us. Building owner just had us replace the unit.

    That ice on the evaporator coil could indicate multiple things and you can’t assume nothing until you inspect everything (filters, etc.) to diagnose the issue.

    I have been in the field less than a year and work for a local company in town and have changed a lot of TXV’s that get clogged on units the company has installed that are less than 3 years old. My first thought is that the installers are not brazing with nitrogen. And sure enough they are not and not even pulling a vacuum properly and they don’t even install filter driers.

      Greetings from Western North Carolina... There is a method to free them up. That sludge someone mentioned gets in the accuators and gums them up. With a few hours and some torch skills some flush and a lot of nitro you can actually get them to clear up and start metering properly again. Pull out all your refrigerant, purge nitro and heat up the accuators. This and purging some flush will get them unstuck. If yall ever think you are experiencing clogged accuators, you can Performa freeze test to confirm. Pull L1 off your blower and start the system. Without a blower running your coil will begin to freeze immediately. Watch the freeze pattern. If some cells of the coil start to frost but others don't you will know strait away which accuators you need to pay closer attention too. Good luck yall.

      while I hate to mention they should have safety devices to shut down and alarm if anything is off, it's true for longevity of equipment, but at the same time systems that don't break deletes work and the electronics are all chock full of early failure junk, which creates more issues, money wasted an overall more global warming in the big pictures from bare materials to end product and repairs.. ;)

    Hey Chris, and all the other cool people here.
    Is this more prevalent with R22?
    I know that discharge temperatures get out of hand very fast when high head pressures, low suction pressures and high compression ratios are present on a system.
    And then the oil produces gum which solidifies in the metering devices, or becomes solids that the liquid line filter gets.
    I have seen this on badly designed abattoir boxes where the evaps and condensers were undersized, so a crankcase pressure regulator had been installed to get the condensing pressures down and the evap pressures up. but then you increase the compression ratio which catches up with you.
    Gummed up liquid line cartridges and compressor failures due the acid produced by the oil breakdown under these temperatures.
    R22 seems to point out the two issues I mentioned in line 2 very quickly.
    I would not mind an objective reply to this one, as it is something that I experienced and cannot unsee.
    Thanks for the awesome channel Chris, I am enjoy the experience of what you share immensely.
    Kind regards,
    Duncan, South Africa.

    Hi Chris, noticed you referenced "subcooling" in your refrigerant circuit diagnosis. I have been inspecting a lot of Trane Voyager equipment largely with FM (short orifice) pistons and a few TXVs, but struggle in diagnosing restricted metering devices concretely as they have similar frost patterns and SH/evap temp pressure symptoms to a low charge condition. I have been encouraged to reference subcooling to "prove" that the unit has most or all of its charge, but struggle in that these aren't true measurements and therefore a crude way to diagnose. I'm speaking from a relative lack of experience, but the only solid indications I can find for "high side conditions" would be discharge pressure against a charging chart derived from load conditions. Again, I realize condenser and discharge pressure are closely linked, just curious your thoughts.

      @@Frolo-H it's common practice to purge nitrogen throughout the braze joint to prevent the inside of the joint from crystallizing which will scale off and in this case clog up the metering device.
      Same as when TIG welding, we back purge argon throughout our piece to prevent the same crystalline structure buildup

      @@throttlebottle5906 there was nothing wrong with the compressor. A blocked orafice in a metering device is responsible for the high head pressure and low suction pressure, also as he showed in the video, the pattern of the frost on the evap coil is consistent with a metering device clog up because you can see heavy ice buildup after each metering device. The charge was most likley decent but not purging nitrogen is what most likley led to this failure

    One question I have is With R22 becoming illegal and unavailable starting in January, Won't the customer's only choice be to replace the whole unit? I would think that all R22 systems once they go low on gas should be labeled as unfit for repair due to the gas becoming illegal in January. I have been wondering about this because I see the HVAC techs that I watch on here still fixing R22 systems that need gas and seemingly not telling the customers that they have to replace the unit because the gas becomes unavailable starting in January?

    • @HVACRVIDEOS
      @HVACRVIDEOS  Před 5 lety +1

      Actually that is a major misconception R-22 will not become illegal it just wont be allowed to be imported into the US and or new R-22 will not be allowed to be made anymore. But the suppliers and manufacturers have stock piled enough to last for many years. The price has actually gone down too. I will discuss this more on my livestream tonight...... @@HVACRVIDEOS Yes Very True, since it's commercial, you never want to create a situation where it will reduce the capacity. Probably time consuming to research if you want to do it right so I totally understand. I've done it on residential where Carrier has a similar unit that is higher SEER that uses a TXV and "steal" the design. Still won't be perfect, but it seems to work based on the numbers. Good luck, yes looking fwd to the video when you get the job.

      Yeah I have heard that before too, but they will end of repairing the unit when their budget resets, I doubt they will replace though it's just too expensive to replace units in California these days. • @OcRefrig
      @OcRefrig Před 5 lety

      low suction. high subcooling - because liquid is being held back in condenser. high superheat - because your not getting enough refrigerant in to evap to cool compressor . low on charge is both pressures low with no subcooling. subcooling is the key.

    • @skywave12
      @skywave12 Před 5 lety +1

      I remember asking that. The answers I got made perfect sense. A Shell is made thin as possible for Efficiency of heat transfer.
      Stainless is a brittle metal. It does not transfer heat well. It also expands with temperature more than most.
      Making it thin with temperature expansion leads to cracks. Although it may be corrosion resistant it otherwise breaks itself apart.
      That is why they don't use it.

    • @normancole8580
      @normancole8580 Před 5 lety

      Well the issue is a poorly running air conditioner on a package unit destroys hear exchangers. The excess moisture blows off the Evap coil and onto the heat exchanger. This is because in a package unit application the Evap coil is up stream from the heat exchanger. Always confirm duct is correct then keep the ac running the best you can. Keep drains clear and blower speeds right and your heat exchangers will last the 20 to 30 years they are supposed to.
