"We'll Have to Wait for Sue Gray's Inquiry" - original song by The Marsh Family

  • This is our first foray into political satire. Because we are cross. It’s not party political.
We have addressed lots of topics in the 22 months since we locked down and put our first parody song out. We’ve sung about the mundane side of family life as well as big issues like vaccine hesitancy, climate change and Black Lives Matter protests. We’ve done straight covers and original songs but mostly we’ve charted the waves of the pandemic and sung about the rules we’ve all had to obey.
The UK news has lately revealed that Downing Street parties and ministerial and civil service events took place in 2020 and 2021 in breach of the rules that were laid out (and largely respected) by the rest of us. So on Wednesday after watching Prime Minister’s Questions with Tess - who was unwell at home - we decided to write and create this song to express our feelings about it all.
As parents who’ve spent many hours teaching our kids about the importance of telling the truth and the difference between a proper apology and one that begins ‘I’m sorry you were upset but …’, we were even more angry with what we have been witnessing. It was embarrassing - and only got worse as a parade of others came out to deflect honest answers and reasonable expectations by saying “we can’t judge until Sue Gray’s enquiry is complete” - Sue Gray is a UK Civil Servant tasked with an investigation of all these events.
It’s only taken four days from beginning to end to write and record the song, so it’s rough and ready and there are a couple of swears (again, sorry!) - but it was important to convey how passionately we feel about what’s happening in our government and country, as our healthcare and education services fight desperately to function and people deal with ongoing trauma and loss. It is a form of therapy for us.
So you might not like the song, the sentiment, or the fact that our children are part of this political jibe - it is not party political, it’s about standards. But as with all the other topics we’ve addressed, we’ve done this because it’s been the source of parenting conversations in our house this week. And when nine-year-olds can perceive what the current Cabinet apparently can’t or won’t, and our kids feel alienated from politics and politicians who are supposed to be role models, then that’s a bad thing for everyone and it needs action.
You can find more about the current events here if you are interested: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politic...

So great to see parents raising kids to be aware of the difference between a real apology and an attempt to save oneself, and great to see the kids are aware of political situations. Knowledge is power. Sing on, Marsh family!

"I'm sorry you were upset, but..."
is pretty much guaranteed to *make* people feel bad when they're *not* feeling bad already and were only trying to ask questions and get answers.
If they're *already* feeling bad *before* someone says that, well, they probably feel worse now.
It's also sort of a cop-out and indicates that there (supposedly) really was nothing to be at all upset about.
It should only be used when/if someone is either acting like a toddler having a tantrum, or is already pulling the "I'm sorry you feel bad" card on you (especially when you don't even particularly feel bad *until* then).
In either of *those* cases, then "I'm sorry *you* feel that way" is perfectly appropriate and may even be the *only* suitable answer under the circumstances.
In any *other* circumstances that I can think of, that sort of answer should very definitely be avoided.

Being in the US , I had to go read up on Sue Gray, and her inquiry....and once I understood it better, I came back , watched it again , and laughed even louder.. You guys are just Gems..absolute Gems I tell you . I love the little scene with the close up of Alfie and Thomas where you sing about robbing a bank ..etc.. You have great acting chops, and both looked so devious .You girls are so great at acting so innocent while singing some outrageous lyrics. Watching your videos is like watching a really funny , radically twisted version of the Sound of Music" Another fifteen million thumbs up.

Great and fun (sort of sticks-in-your-.throat fun), as always.
When I was younger, I used to hear that „each country has the government it deserves“. I have been wondering just what the population of some countries (not naming names here…) has been doing so wrong to get what they have…!

Well, we have been so busy raising families and working while naively trusting our system to do what its supposed to. Who would have thought the corruption ran so deep? (No party pointing, just truth)

As always.... LOVE IT, LOVE IT LOVE IT...🤣 ITS ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS!
    FUNNY BUT TO THE POINT.
What a shame Matt Hancock caused the removal of all the HIDDEN CAMERAS in the building.
We could have all virtually attended the parties too🤣
Then we could have all been witnesses and wouldn't have needed to rely on sue grays enquiry. 😆
But.... joking aside, you have made a fantastic song to sum up the News of today.
You are all so Talented. Even if they had karaoke at these parties, none of them would have Topped you guys. Your songs are awesome.
I love watching all your songs.....i watch them, time and time again.
Please dont ever stop making them. You cheer me up when I'm feeling down.
You are the best family singers ever.
    PERFECT ROLE MODELS.
THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE FOR SO MANY OF US.

a brave song which in certain sectors will not go down well. As someone who spent 39 years in education trying hard to install the ideas of standards which are acceptable in society for the very people who proport to govern us to act in such a way is not acceptable. well done

And to the people who say "Kids shouldn't sing about politics" I say: "Politicians should behave like role models. And the way politicians all over the world are behaving right now it's necessary that even kids start calling them out for it!" Bravo Marsh Family! (And good apology from Alfie! ;) )

Who says your kids shouldn't sing about politics? It's their world these cronies are messing up. We've all endured hardships beyond description during the pandemic, we've lost, we've missed, we've been unable to care and share as we normally would. Anything and anyone that keeps the attention on the secret hypocrisy that was going on behind our backs, is all right by me. Keep singing Marsh family, you helped us all during the dark days. You made us laugh, you made us cry, you made us think. Keep on shaming them. They deserve it.
We are all so proud of youxx💕

So, where do I even start. I'm commenting from Texas(!), but I do see at least a few stories out of Great Britain. I almost made the mistake of not clicking on an original song, but I recognized Sue Gray's name, and went for it. So glad I did!
I tripped over the @Marsh Family fairly early in the CoViD-19 parody period, and by now I've watched pretty much all of those videos, and enjoyed them, but I've also got a pretty good idea how stir-crazy your kids must be, because I can see how much they've grown physically since the oldest videos I remember. It is extremely OK with me if your family sings a song that has the subtext "singing parody songs about lockdown was fun until about Christmas 2020, but still singing about lockdown at Christmas 2021 is getting ridiculous, and seeing our leadership making rules for us, but not for them, is THE LAST STRAW". If that turns out to be somewhat rude, or profane, I think you've all earned that (and maybe a few more original songs).
I hope every kid in England becomes a civil servant, but not the kind you're singing about here!
If you run out of material with UK politicians, may I respectfully suggest Texas and Florida might also be excellent places to look for politicians to skewer.
And I DO sort of want to know which family member suggested this idea in the first place. But maybe don't tell me, because if my guess is wrong, I don't want to know!
