"They're Not Young" - Marsh Family adaptation of Fun's "We Are Young" on Trump vs Biden for 2024

- Having taken our followers down many a bizarre UK politics rabbit hole in recent months, we decided to flip things and wade in on the unfolding drama of the coming US 2024 Presidential election. Mindful that America is the most divided nation it has ever been, we decided to upset everybody in (nearly) equal measure. So we have made it about the advanced age of the two current frontrunners for the election, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, who seem about to be locked in for a second head-to-head (unless one of them is locked up). No serious offence is intended - either to political partisans, or to people of a certain age who may bristle.
“We Are Young” was a smash stadium-rock style hit in the early 2010s - boosted by its inclusion in an episode of Glee in 2011. It was written by Fun (Nate Ruess, Jack Antonoff, Andrew Dost) and Jeff Bhasker, with smooth guest vocals remotely recorded by Janelle Monáe. We had played with different ideas and possible backings to address the topic - including “Y.M.C.A.” and “Rich Men North of Richmond” - but this felt the most ‘us’ because it’s quite left-field and unexpected. And even while the track itself is pretty sprightly and energetic, the repetitive relentless chord sequence and drum beat feel in step with the same old faces dominating the political landscape and tying their respective parties in angst-ridden knots while seeking to return to the White House. Also: the music video features a slow motion riot and disaster unfolding where everyone’s disagreeing and fighting, so on point.

I don’t disagree that both aspiring candidates are too old to be applying for a job that ends five years from now, and I say this as a 73-year-old. However I find it problematic that the inference is that they are equally bad choices. Biden is an elderly politician who has actually managed to pass a significant amount of progressive legislation in the past three years, and Trump is a dangerous authoritarian who fully intends to dismantle democracy in the US. It’s important that people recognize the difference.
Both are older adults- only one acts like an adult. We don't need someone who's going to take us back to sandbox behavior and dismantle democracy.
I would have voted for Biden without a second thought as he has surroundedhimself with able cabinet members, etc. But he put country over self. How often do politicians do THAT? - and stepped down.
Wow. For a family from the U.K., they sure understand what the U.S. is dealing with. We’re in a big mess here.
You would be surprised. Quite a lot of us follow US politics very closely because we are all so tied together. Our politics more or less follow yours and that's not pretty.
Here in Australia a lot of us are watching with amazement and sadness that the choice of leaders is so limited from such a large population.

Any song by Marsh family is lovely, though one would think they have enough on their plates with their own politics. It's the CLUBS surrounding the two old codgers that we are electing. The Democrats want happiness for all, the Republicans want happiness for rich white folks and nobody else. The age of the President isn't in question; the sanity of Trump is in question, and he's crazy. Biden is just old, but he hasn't lost his mind, just his balance a few times. Trump lost his mind a long time ago and it's fading fast as his doom progresses.

We have an age limit to become president or a member of congress. We also need an upper age limit. Make them retire at a certain age.

As an Aussie I think you nailed it. Trouble is everywhere you look they want you to decide between the lesser of 2 bad choices. Just out of interest I looked up the founding fathers age and was shocked how young they were compared to today's politicians . That goes for England and Australia too. There's a reason we have a retirement age.

Love the Marsh family, but disagree with the message. As an American, I'll take a pro-democracy 81 year old as President over an anti-democracy candidate of any age. And even if the GOP replaces Trump with a younger candidate, that will be the choice.
