Thank you to the team at the UN buffer zone for allowing us access to film and document this truly unique location that few people get to see up close and personal. Thanks Marek for hosting us and all to cool Cypriot peeps we met along the way!

At least Greeks and Turks can agree on how much they love cats 😻🇬🇷🇨🇾🇹🇷

Guys Cypriot here , we actually used to go and smoke weed in the Buffer Zone in our teens because no police from either side came over there. Also there is a village near Larnaca that is completely inside the buffer zone so that gives ground to a lot of tomfoolery
yeah i heard that from my turkish cypriot friends too, super cool and very unique convenience, how's the situation today?
Unfortunately it's pretty much a stalemate , we where actually pretty close to a solution some years ago but the greek Cypriot leadership pretty much tanked it so negotiations stopped. The hard thing is that the people pretty much can get along when given the chance. Ofcourse there are some bigoted opinions from both sides but the truth is ordinary cyprios really want for a solution so that we can get along once again

Serbia has many off-shore accounts in Cyprus.
It is also in good terms with both Greece and Turkey.
smart serbians
The reason there are a lot of flags in the bufferzone is that the blue berrets (UN peacekeepers) have to be from different countries than in Cyprus, Turkey or Greece. There are actually a lot of Canadian and Serbian officers there. It has nothing to do with off-shore accounts or relations.
I am literally at the UN buffer zone in the Cyrus right now

Thanks Barb for checking out the north I was literally just at the Kermia Crossing. The village of Pyla is a point where people can cross and see the north, south, residential un buffer zone and the UK territory at the same time. My village akincilar / lourugina also required special permission to enter from even the north until a few years ago and is the furthest souththern point of the north.
I mean, it was the most basic and simple way to see the North Side, but of course there’s much more than just North Nicosia
I also crossed at Ledra street with my family when we were on vacation in Cyprus, I kinda had to push everyone to do it, since our Greek Cypriot guide didn't look too eager to go there.
I'm glad you did. The northern side of Nicosia has much older buildings and seems a bit more unspoilt compared to the southern side. And its cool to be able to say that you have crossed a disputed border into an unrecognised country!
@@citizenerased1992yeah...the buildings are older because Turkish cypriots can't do their own homes and live in our homes... Don't wanna make drama, you can put my reply into the trash, but I just wanted to say this.

Interesting fact: the Cyprus National Guard, the Greek regiment in Cyprus and the Canadian UN regiment fought off the Turkish Army attempting to capture the airport. The Canadians managed to keep it for the UN.
Oh another fact: Greece sent planes from Crete to help…..The Cyprus National guard mistook them for Turkish planes and shot some down while they were attempting to land at the airport….
Awesome video!! Another fun fact, there is also an old massive hotel in the buffer zone! The Ledra Palace Hotel! Obviously it hasnt been used as a hotel since 1974, currently used by the UN as a hub! Love the video!
So crazy, when I got close to the border I would look at the narrow gap in the buffer zone and it’s crazy to think all those buildings are empty & unused
@@GeographyNow exactly! Be sure to visit Cyprus again soon! Would love to show you around as a turkish cypriot:).
Barbs, dude, it was one of my wishes to see this part of Cyprus! @@GeographyNowKonstantinos in 14:44 didnt say "souvlaki". He said he likes "Souvla" which is what in mainland Greece we call "Kontosouvli" which is probably what in Brazil they call "Churrasco" which is a very common meal and traditional taverns in all our countries.
This was awesme Barbs, cheers... I love how you keep it so straight forward...
Well done Barbs, you've put a huge smile on my face! I'm lucky enough to say that very soon I'm starting my one year long tour of duty in Un peacekeeping force in Cyprus, hence staying in the UNPA and visits to an old airport will be something regular and usual to me. Now, because of your video, I feel even more privileged than the rest, not just for the opportunity of being a part of UN force but more as a person allowed to enter where most people do not enter. I'm huge fan of your channel from Serbia, really liked the Serbian episode. It was flammable, just as anything related to us :). To bad we didn't meet in buffer zone. Keep up the good work!
Souvla and Souvlaki are not the same thing
11:20 as a teenager with my family we had to wait on those checkpoint roadblocks (not only on the one that's shown but also the eastern Deryneia roadblock) for almost an hour just to get through as my grandparents were refugees from the occupied area
Watching these Geo Go videos reminds me of all the vloggers I used to watch 15 years ago on CZcams.

Thank you, I really enjoy these Geography Go videos and hope you continue them after all of the country episodes are finished. I imagine you have a lot of contacts all over the globe at this point so you could take us to a lot of places. Maybe even to that elusive, gigantic 7th continent.
I mean I really want to get out and see more for sure. It will definitely happen in the future more!
This is very topical. I just moved to Cyprus and I always wondered how this buffer zone works. Many Thanks for posting!
Thanks Barbs for the video! I was in Cyprus last year and I was initially confused why the capital does not have an airport. Later I found out about the history and had the chance to step foot into the Turkish side via Ledra Street too. Does bring back some memories.
This is great Barbs! Love the Go videos!
These videos are so informative and fun to watch, also not to long but not to short
Barbs, cool video overall, their are many points that I can go on that could be better, BUT THE ONE thing that I can not get over, is the subtitles here: 14:44
The guy here does not say "Souvlaki" he said Souvla. Basically the bigger version of Souvlaki ( which is why it has the "ki" part) , the meat peaces are big are you fists, you will not find is as street food but in restaurants or special events etc etc.
Go back to Cyprus, make over the video /s . Make sure you eat some Sheftalies too ( most traditional Cypriot Dish, you can find in both sides).
If this is how the channel evolves after the country episodes are finished I’m so freaking excited for it. I love learning about places like this
And I love making videos like this. Glad you enjoy!
That might have been your best video ever. Excellent job!
If this is the main kind of videos that you'll make after the main country series ends, I'll all for it!
Back in college two of my classmates, a Greek Cypriot and a Turk Cypriot (though his family moved to the mainland) wound up being really good friends. They both thought the fighting and the division were really bad and agreed the government of Turkey really needs to let the island (and the Turkish people living there) be its own thing.
They are their own thing.
Turkiye takes care of them because entire world illegally embargoes them and not let anything through. (By I mean 'Illegally' while they help Kosovo in anything, they just simply ignoring Turkish Cypriots even though they saved themselves with help of Turkiye from getting genocided by EOKA.)
Brief history lesson, the Island of Crete, there were Turks living in the island, there is none today. Rhodes has similar history. Guess what happened to Turks in those islands, they were massacred and forced to leave the island. Greeks(Govs) have thought they would be able to achieve the same result in Cyprus. I don't say it's good or bad. Maybe it's very logical for them, because it's a strategically important Island. They tried to took over the island, Greek speaking people in the island massacred Turks but luckily Turkey this time was ready to protect Turks. Hence Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was founded. It exists and it will continue to exist, sooner or later other countries will recognize it as a state.
@@blgram Don't even forget the Turks in Eastern Thrace that not even being recognized as 'Turkish minority' by the Greek government and just simply being called 'Muslim Greeks'

@@GeographyNow thanks!🙂
It's a bit different in that there never was fighting between the two parts of Germany and the division was imposed from above, while in Cyprus it was a split between two languages/religions. I really hope they can live in peace without a silly border though. I've only been to Northern Cyprus some years ago but would love to visit both sides.

8:40 No, the UN peacekeeping mission operates on sovereign territory of the Republic of Cyprus. It very well belongs to a country and that is Cyprus
Barbs misused the word "technically" here. According to international law, as recognised by almost all countries, this area _de jure_ belongs to the Republic of Cyprus. However, it is _de facto_ not under control of the Republic of Cyprus' government.
@@quuaaarrrk8056 I think there's still a misunderstanding here. The UN buffer was an area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus during the armistice, and then Cyprus invited the blue berrets to its own part of the armistice line. Unfortunately the Occupational government does not remember this, and their tried to violate the area near Pyla, attacking members of the UN peacekeepers. This is of course another war crime. But they claimed it is a "neutral area", it is not, it is the first line of defense of Cyprus against foreign invaders. The green line from 1964 only existed inside Nicosia itself, it was extended to the armistice line in the countryside in 1974.
@@georgios_5342 Shouldn’t have tried to get rid of Turks and unite with Greece then. That green zone is the reason why all of Cyprus is not Turkish. And Greeks chose not to unite with the Turks in the referandum. You had your chance to unite and now you don’t. Either should have voted for unification or should have learned to shut up about a topic your side is faulty at.

Agh! I wish I knew you were coming to the island. I’d take you to ultra-interesting (yet safe) places in the buffer zone :-) the real insider stuff!
The very first time I rented a car was when I was on holiday in France last year, Corsica, specifically. For me, being from the UK, I'm used to the whole driving on the left with the steering wheel on the right, so driving in a car calibrated for a country the opposite way round, I found myself when going to change gear, I sometimes hit the door with my left hand, lol
I drove in Cyprus, it was weird at first but I got used to it fast
but it was good to drive on the right side of the road again once I came home
I wish you announced you were going to cyprus! I always wanted to see you :(
I couldn't see you! I went to Cyprus, in March, and you went there earlier! I cannot!

Hoping to finally go to Cyprus either this year or next year. Aiming to go to all European countries, and I still have 8 to go to achieve that goal! Thank you Barbs for showing us the 3 sides of this island (excluding Dhekelia and Akrotiri)
Cool! Such a coincidence; my girlfriend and I are touring Cyprus at the moment. Went to the main places in the south, got the UK experience in Akrotiri and today crossing the same crossing you went to go to the north. We did not not know special clearance was needed to visit the buffer zone and planned to visit the airport as well later ☹️.
Have fun! It’ll be an awesome trip

Cyprus looks like the place you go and make friends with half the city, get fed and will have great memories
That reminds me a little of the situation in Korea. Except crossing the Korean buffer zone/DMZ is a lot harder.

You can actually drive straight through them both, there is no border, just a sign that says 'welcome to the British area' basically. There is not much to see, but i'm glad i got to tick them off as I dream of visiting all the B.O.Ts in my lifetime (somehow).
It's mostly Cypriot villages other than the military camps (which you obviously cannot enter), there is no border or anything.

I lived in the buffer zone, the UN guys are pretty chill
Really? That’s so cool, can you explain a little bit more about the experience?
@GeographyNow I lied in Pyla(village) while I went to university there. For some reason, a british university decided to open a university in the buffer zone. Pyla is a very interesting place. The greeks and turks mostly live together without much problems. But because of the grey area status, some things were weird, like there's a casino every couple of houses. The shops sell mostly turkish products, including very cheap cigarettes. You never see police around just UN cars going around the village every now and then. Police from both sides seem to be allowed to enter if called, but not allowed to stay. Signs are both in turkish and greek(also english). Basically everyone in that village speaks English as a second language or first, including the old folks. There's also a pretty big community of british living in that village. If i had to guess from my experience, I'd say 1/3-1/2 turks, 1/4 greeks, and the rest a mix of british and international students from the University.
Very strange little place to live in my opinion
Wow, a fresh new episode! I loved seeing the Orange trees. Do people pick Oranges in public places?

Hey Barbs, thanks for addressing this, as a Greek Cypriot myself, I find it horrible how our island was brutally divided, hopefully Greek and Turkish Cypriots can live in peace.
Most of the northern side has been settled by non-islanders, so unfortunately I don't see peace happening without more war.
They do live in peace for decades. There is no active military conflict since 1974. İts just the island is divided, there is no fighting
