One day I met a 14 year old Turkish kid with his aunt and they showed me and my mom around Istanbul. I promised him he could be in the Turkey episode when it came up. 5 years later I kept that promise. Say "hi" to our youngest guest host, Ege, who became a part-time metalcore emo musician and international relations major. Proud of you man! You've grown up! And HUGE thanks to the ~60 Turkish Subscribers that met up with us in Izmir and Istanbul and helped with information for this episode!
ALSO yes I am aware the UN recognizes this country as "Türkiye" however we follow the English names (English hs no "ü") and also... I'm not the UN
    Enjoy!

The dude just grabbed the baby, raised her in the air and started kissing her after finishing the song. I was simply in shock to see people calling him a creep in the comments. I understand that there are creepy people in the world and the culture around safety in western countries(I guess med not included), but finding a baby cute should be universal and above genders.

    Another history fun fact:
In around 1890 an Ottoman ship named Ertuğrul shipwrecked off the coast of Japan as it came back from a diplomatic mission. The local population helped rescue the surviving crew and since then the Ottomans(and later Turkey) had a warm relationship with Japan. They even made a movie about it called „Ertuğrul 1890” or „125 years memory“.

The Turks also did something back: During the iran iraq war a plane full of japanese families was stuck in iran since irak declared it a no fly zone. The turkish ambassador had a plan though. Get turkish airlines to fly them out. But if they wanted all the japanese people to fit in the plane the crew had to be left behind. They did not want to stay in a war zone that was until the turkish ambassador told the crew the story of the ottoman ship that crashed in japan and that the crew was saved by an japanese village. Only then they agreed.

We also have a very similar alphabet so I can pronounce a lot of Turkish, even though I can’t understand it, which made for many amusing moments.

      @abdulali8738 Před rokem +1

      1. In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
      2. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
      2. God, there is no god but He, the Living, the Eternal. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. He is the Sublime, the Magnificent. Originator of the heavens and the earth. He made for you mates from among yourselves, and pairs of animals, by means of which He multiplies you. There is nothing like Him. He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
      3. He sent down to you the Book with the Truth, confirming what came before it; and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel.
      4. Aforetime, as guidance for mankind; and He sent down the Criterion. Those who have rejected God’s signs will have a severe punishment. God is Mighty, Able to take revenge.
      5. Nothing is hidden from God, on earth or in the heaven.
      6. It is He who forms you in the wombs as He wills. There is no god except He, the Almighty, the Wise.
      16. And mention in the Scripture Mary, when she withdrew from her people to an eastern location.
      17. She screened herself away from them, and We sent to her Our spirit, and He appeared to her as an immaculate human.
      18. She said, “I take refuge from you in the Most Merciful, should you be righteous.”
      19. He said, “I am only the messenger of your Lord, to give you the gift of a pure son.”
      20. She said, “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, and I was never unchaste?”
      21. He said, “Thus said your Lord, `It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign for humanity, and a mercy from Us. It is a matter already decided.'“
      22. So she carried him, and secluded herself with him in a remote place.
      23. The labor-pains came upon her, by the trunk of a palm-tree. She said, “I wish I had died before this, and been completely forgotten.”
      24. Whereupon he called her from beneath her: “Do not worry; your Lord has placed a stream beneath you.
      25. And shake the trunk of the palm-tree towards you, and it will drop ripe dates by you.”
      26. “So eat, and drink, and be consoled. And if you see any human, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious, so I will not speak to any human today.'“
      27. Then she came to her people, carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have done something terrible.
      28. O sister of Aaron, your father was not an evil man, and your mother was not a whore.”
      29. So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to an infant in the crib?”
      30. He said, “I am the servant of God. He has given me the Scripture, and made me a prophet.
      31. And has made me blessed wherever I may be; and has enjoined on me prayer and charity, so long as I live.
      32. And kind to my mother, and He did not make me a disobedient rebel.
      33. So Peace is upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the Day I get resurrected alive.”
      34. That is Jesus son of Mary-the Word of truth about which they doubt.
      35. It is not for God to have a child-glory be to Him. To have anything done, He says to it, “Be,” and it becomes.
      36. “God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.”
      37. But the various factions differed among themselves. So woe to those who disbelieve from the scene of a tremendous Day.
      38. Listen to them and watch for them the Day they come to Us. But the wrongdoers today are completely lost.
      39. And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded. Yet they are heedless, and they do not believe.
      40. It is We who will inherit the earth and everyone on it, and to Us they will be returned.
      58. This is what We recite to you of the Verses and the Wise Reminder.
      59. The likeness of Jesus in God’s sight is that of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, “Be,” and he was.
      60. The truth is from your Lord, so do not be of those who doubt.
      61. And if anyone disputes with you about him, after the knowledge that has come to you, say, “Come, let us call our children and your children, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves, and let us invoke God’s curse on the liars.”
      62. This is the narrative of truth: there is no god but God. God is the Mighty, the Wise.
      63. But if they turn away-God knows the corrupt.
      64. Say, “O People of the Book, come to terms common between us and you: that we worship none but God, and that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us takes others as lords besides God.” And if they turn away, say, “Bear witness that we have submitted.”
      65. O People of the Book! Why do you argue about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Will you not reason?
      66. Here you are-you argue about things you know, but why do you argue about things you do not know? God knows, and you do not know.
      67. Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a Monotheist, a Muslim. And he was not of the Polytheists.
      68. The people most deserving of Abraham are those who followed him, and this prophet, and those who believe. God is the Guardian of the believers.
      69. A party of the People of the Book would love to lead you astray, but they only lead themselves astray, and they do not realize it.
      70. O People of the Book! Why do you reject the revelations of God, even as you witness?
      71. O People of the Book! Why do you confound the truth with falsehood, and knowingly conceal the truth?
      72. Some of the People of the Book say, “Believe in what was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day, and reject it at its end, so that they may return.”
      73. And trust none except those who follow your religion.” Say, “Guidance is God’s guidance. If someone is given the like of what you were given, or they argue with you before your Lord, say, “All grace is in God’s hand; He gives it to whomever He wills.” God is Bounteous and Knowing.
      74. He specifies His mercy for whomever He wills. God is Possessor of Sublime Grace.
      75. Among the People of the Book is he, who, if you entrust him with a heap of gold, he will give it back to you. And among them is he, who, if you entrust him with a single coin, he will not give it back to you, unless you keep after him. That is because they say, “We are under no obligation towards the gentiles.” They tell lies about God, and they know it.
      76. Indeed, whoever fulfills his commitments and maintains piety-God loves the pious.
      77. Those who exchange the covenant of God, and their vows, for a small price, will have no share in the Hereafter, and God will not speak to them, nor will He look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. They will have a painful punishment.
      78. And among them are those who twist the Scripture with their tongues, that you may think it from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture. And they say, “It is from God,” when it is not from God. They tell lies and attribute them to God, knowingly.
      79. No person to whom God has given the Scripture, and wisdom, and prophethood would ever say to the people, “Be my worshipers rather than God’s.” Rather, “Be people of the Lord, according to the Scripture you teach, and the teachings you learn.”
      80. Nor would he command you to take the angels and the prophets as lords. Would he command you to infidelity after you have submitted?
      81. God received the covenant of the prophets, “Inasmuch as I have given you of scripture and wisdom; should a messenger come to you verifying what you have, you shall believe in him, and support him.” He said, “Do you affirm My covenant and take it upon yourselves?” They said, “We affirm it.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.”
      82. Whoever turns away after that-these are the deceitful.
      83. Do they desire other than the religion of God, when to Him has submitted everything in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him they will be returned?
      84. Say, “We believe in God, and in what was revealed to us; and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses, and Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.”
      85. Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
      86. How will God guide a people who disbelieved after having believed, and had witnessed that the Messenger is true, and the clear proofs had come to them? God does not guide the unjust people.
      87. Those-their penalty is that upon them falls the curse of God, and of the angels, and of all mankind.
      88. Remaining in it eternally, without their punishment being eased from them, and without being reprieved.
      89. Except those who repent afterwards, and reform; for God is Forgiving and Merciful.
      90. As for those who disbelieve after having believed, then plunge deeper into disbelief, their repentance will not be accepted; these are the lost.
      91. As for those who disbelieve and die disbelievers, even the earth full of gold would not be accepted from any of them, were he to offer it for ransom. These will have a painful torment, and will have no saviors.
      111. And say, “Praise be to God, who has not begotten a son, nor has He a partner in sovereignty, nor has He an ally out of weakness, and glorify Him constantly.”
      Read The Quran.
“I am to you a clear warner.”
“That you shall worship none but God. I fear for you the agony of a painful Day.”

In Bulgaria we learned that almost everyone loves Turkish Delight, along with the coffee or tea. And yes they had “Doner Kebab” too. My wife’s family took us to a Turkish restaurant in Westchester run by a Ukrainian, he explained to us that he was a smuggler during the USSR days, he would sneak across the Black Sea at night, stay in Turkey all day, and then sneak back in the next night, and he grew to love the food so much he wanted to open a Turkish restaurant!

I laughed a lot with the superstitions segment. We do most of these things in Greece too, like entering a house with your right leg, the ubiquitous Evil Eye, telling your fortune with coffee remains, wood knocking, right hand itching=money (but left hand itching=you're gonna get beaten up), stepping on new shoes (but not just the first one, everyone who sees it will do it until your shoes are not new and nice anymore). I also had an ex-girlfriend who believed that exchanging sharp objects meant that we would fight, although we didn't need the sharp objects for that...

      1. In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
      2. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
      1. Say, “He is Allah, the One.
      2. Allah, the Absolute.
      3. He begets not, nor was He begotten.
      4. And there is none comparable to Him.”
      87. Allah-there is no god except He. He will gather you to the Day of Resurrection, in which there is no doubt. And who speaks more truly than Allah?
      115. Whoever makes a breach with the Messenger, after the guidance has become clear to him, and follows other than the path of the believers, We will direct him in the direction he has chosen, and commit him to Hell-what a terrible destination!
      116. Allah will not forgive that partners be associated with Him; but will forgive anything less than that, to whomever He wills. Anyone who ascribes partners to Allah has strayed into far error.
      117. They invoke in His stead only females. In fact, they invoke none but a rebellious devil.
      118. Allah has cursed him. And he said, “I will take to myself my due share of Your servants.”
      119. “And I will mislead them, and I will entice them, and I will prompt them to slit the ears of cattle, and I will prompt them to alter the creation of Allah.” Whoever takes Satan as a lord, instead of Allah, has surely suffered a profound loss.
      120. He promises them, and he raises their expectations, but Satan promises them nothing but delusions.
      121. These-their place is Hell, and they will find no escape from it.
      122. But as for those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. The promise of Allah is true-and who is more truthful in speech than Allah?
      156. And for their faithlessness, and their saying against Mary a monstrous slander.
      157. And for their saying, “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.” In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did. Indeed, those who differ about him are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of assumptions. Certainly, they did not kill him.
      158. Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself. Allah is Mighty and Wise.
      159. There is none from the People of the Scripture but will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.
      160. Due to wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We forbade them good things that used to be lawful for them; and for deterring many from Allah’s path.
      161. And for their taking usury, although they were forbidden it; and for their consuming people's wealth dishonestly. We have prepared for the faithless among them a painful torment.
      162. But those among them firmly rooted in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed before you; and the observers of prayers, and the givers of charity, and the believers in Allah and the Last Day-upon these We will bestow an immense reward.
      163. We have inspired you, as We had inspired Noah and the prophets after him. And We inspired Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and Jesus, and Job, and Jonah, and Aaron, and Solomon. And We gave David the Psalms.
      164. Some messengers We have already told you about, while some messengers We have not told you about. And Allah spoke to Moses directly.
      165. Messengers delivering good news, and bringing warnings; so that people may have no excuse before Allah after the coming of the messengers. Allah is Powerful and Wise.
      166. But Allah bears witness to what He revealed to you. He revealed it with His knowledge. And the angels bear witness. Though Allah is a sufficient witness.
      167. Those who disbelieve and repel from Allah’s path have gone far astray.
      168. Those who disbelieve and transgress; Allah is not about to forgive them, nor will He guide them to any path.
      169. Except to the path of Hell, where they will dwell forever. And that is easy for Allah.
      170. O people! The Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe-that is best for you. But if you disbelieve, to Allah belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. Allah is Omniscient and Wise.
      171. O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and do not say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of Allah, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say, “Three.” Refrain-it is better for you. Allah is only one God. Glory be to Him-that He should have a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and Allah is a sufficient Protector.
      172. The Messiah does not disdain to be a servant of Allah, nor do the favored angels. Whoever disdains His worship, and is too arrogant-He will round them up to Himself altogether.
      173. But as for those who believe and do good works, He will pay them their wages in full, and will increase His grace for them. But as for those who disdain and are too proud, He will punish them with an agonizing punishment. And they will find for themselves, apart from Allah, no lord and no savior.
      174. O people! A proof has come to you from your Lord, and We sent down to you a clear light.
      175. As for those who believe in Allah, and hold fast to Him, He will admit them into mercy and grace from Him, and will guide them to Himself in a straight path.
      72. They disbelieve those who say, “Allah is the Messiah the son of Mary.” But the Messiah himself said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates others with Allah, Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his dwelling is the Fire. The wrongdoers have no saviors.”
      73. They disbelieve those who say, “Allah is the third of three.” But there is no deity except the One God. If they do not refrain from what they say, a painful torment will befall those among them who disbelieve.
      74. Will they not repent to Allah and ask His forgiveness? Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
      75. The Messiah son of Mary was only a messenger, before whom other Messengers had passed away, and his mother was a woman of truth. They both used to eat food. Note how We make clear the revelations to them; then note how deluded they are.
      76. Say, “Do you worship, besides Allah, what has no power to harm or benefit you?” But Allah: He is the Hearer, the Knower.
      77. Say, “O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion beyond the truth; and do not follow the opinions of people who went astray before, and misled many, and themselves strayed off the balanced way.”
      78. Cursed were those who disbelieved from among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and Jesus son of Mary. That is because they rebelled and used to transgress.
      79. They used not to prevent one another from the wrongs they used to commit. Evil is what they used to do.
      80. You will see many of them befriending those who disbelieve. Terrible is what their souls prompts them to do. The wrath of Allah fell upon them, and in the torment they will remain.
      81. Had they believed in Allah and the Prophet, and in what was revealed to him, they would not have befriended them. But many of them are immoral.

About Hungary: the Ottoman Empire ruled a large part of Hungary for 150 years. It's complicated (imagine a little bell ringing here) but sometimes the Hungarian people had better relations with the Turks then the Habsburgs (who ruled another big chunk of Humgary at that time). Also back in ancient and early medieval times the Hungarians were Central Asian nomadic people - just like many Turkic groups. We have many Turkish loanwords, Turkic historic sites and of course during 150 years of Ottoman rule many people intermarried. There are many Hungarians with Turkish last names. The influence of the Ottomans might not be as strong or easily spotted as German or Slavic ones, but it's clearly visible.

According to scholars, the Summerian language is still a mistery but closely related to old Hungarian. If that is true, the migration of the Magyars to todays Hungary or generally Europe is not correct and needs revision. This would show how the Caspian region played a huge role for the interaction.

The Hungarian word árpa was borrowed from a Turkic language before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries), from Proto-Turkic *arpa.[5][6][4] The Hungarians cohabited for centuries with Turkic people, which accounts for over 10% word roots in modern Hungarian being Turkic. In Hungarian, most pastoral terms are Turkic in origin, and agricultural terms are 50% r-Turkic. Many Hungarian names, and also animal and plant names,[7] are of Turkic origin, and the majority of tribe names were of Turkic origin.[8]Turkic is, along with Uralic, German and Slavic, one of the four languages that have the greatest percentage of word roots in the Hungarian language. However, the Magyars are not a Turkic people, though the Turks made a genetic and linguistic contribution.[9][10]

At one point in my studies I did a group project with this Turkish guy. We hit it off really well and went for a beer often after we had worked on our project. We started talking about our respective languages and he told me this story. He was a major fan of the Chronicles of Narnia as a child and read all of the books (in Turkish). One thing that had always annoyed him was the name Aslan. The name of the lion as we all know is Aslan. Aslan in Turkish, however, literally means lion. He had always thought the author of the books was too lazy to give the lion a name and had just named him lion. He only found out that the name of the lion was Aslan when he moved away from Turkey and saw the movies in English for the first time.

"maNga" represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 with the song "We Could Be the Same" and took second place. They won the Best European Act award from MTV Networks Europe in MTV Europe Music Awards 2009.
The interesting note would be that a lot of the founders of those rock groups are graduates from top universities of Istanbul and Ankara.
There are also other rock singers like Teoman, Şebnem Ferah, Emre Aydın that I have listened to.
But the most popular singer from Turkey would be "Tarkan", known as a prince of pop in Turkey.

heeeey! :DDD it's so interesting to me that despite living half of Asia away from Turkey, we, Tuvans (a turkic ethnicity in Siberia), have plenty of superstitions in common. our culture have roots in nomadic lifestyle and is deeply influenced by buddhism, being part of russia having its touch, so i never really understood where these superstitions come from. like it's obvious that our languages are related, but I haven't thought about these little cultural gestusres and habits. for example:
    when we have "too much" fun, adults will say 'don't laugh too much or else you'll be crying later' ;
    cutting nails and getting your hair cut late at evening is a no-no. apparently it has something to do with dark, evil spirits living in them ;
    not lending sharp objects to people ; or don't keep your scissors unlocked? or you'll be in a fight ;
    and so on.
some of superstitions I recognize as well-known overall in russia, cuz russians are super supersticious too. itching of hands, ears, nose, cheeks, etc. leading to smthn is quite a popular belief in russia as far as i know.

      82. Whoever turns away after that-these are the deceitful.
      83. Do they desire other than the religion of God, when to Him has submitted everything in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him they will be returned?

Quick correction: Turks are not heavy meat eaters, Turkey actually has the lowest meat consumption rate in Europe. Our internationally known dishes like kebab and doner are all meat based but they have historically been festive meals, not casual meals. Pre-agricultural modernization, most Anatolians only ate meat during weddings, funerals or Eid. Even after the modernization, due ti Turkey's terrain that doesn't support high meat return animal husbandry, meat has remained to be less accessible and expensive product.

The huge thing misrepresented here is the fact that Turkish cuisine is incredibly vegetarian and vegan friendly. We have an entire sub-type of cuisine called zeytinyağlı (olive oil) which is comprised of all types of vegetables, salads etc. We also have a large variety of pastries, such as many types of börek, which also have rich vegan/vegetarian options. We also have a rich variety of vegan/ vegetarian soups. Just look for home food or esnaf restaurants rather than fast food and kebab restaurants.

Ege actually misinterpreted the name of the city "Balıkesir". Balık means city in old turkic languages. See "ordu baliq" for reference. So even though balık means fish and esir means prisoner, in reality it means castled city or something along those lines.

Its not really a "traditional" story. The idea only came about in the 20th century when a natural rock formation shaped in a loose fashion to that of a boat was found on Mt. As for Turkish music, I want to note the metal scene. They specialize in brutal death metal and black metal. I don't know many bands to recommend since it's very general, you can just look it up word by word on CZcams and you'll find at least something not necessarily above average but good, however, if you wanna check them out, try Sarinvomit.

I love Turkiye and Oghuz history in general. Oghuz cultures are a fascinating mix of Turkic blood and culture mix with pre Turkic peoples. The fusions created diverse art, architecture and cuisine, a influence undertone of neighboring cultures, and a massive achievement in military history adaptability.
Even the Oghuz Turks in the Caucasus were popular recruits for Soviet army do to military cultural achievements. So they are strong.

Oghur Turkic history is more interesting to me as they are almost exinct with only Chuvash language left and they have language connection to the Hunnic and Bulgar turkic languages while Oghuz is closer to the Kipchak branches. Most of the Turks in the Middle East are Oghuz save for the Turkmens who live in central asia.

Oghur is so interesting because its the type of Turkic language spoken by the Huns,Khazars and Bulgars and were the first Turks in Eastern Europe. The band Altın Gün is pretty famous among some european countries I think. Asia Minor is a nice prog band. Almora is an old symphonic metal band. Pentagram, Murder King, 80 Kalibre and Kurban are famous rock/metal bands and Yavuz Çetin was a great guitar player and Kerim Çaplı was his drum playing best buddy who was actually a friend of Jimi Hendrix.
