  • '1974: Turkish Invasion of Cyprus Captured Up Close'
On This Day 1974, Turkish forces invaded Cyrpus by sea and by air.
ITN's Michael Nicholson was at the scene when Turkish paratroopers dropped onto the open plains near Gönyeli, on the road between the capital, Nicosia, and the coastal city of Kyrenia.
Turkey's invasion came five days after the Greek-backed Cypriot coup d'état on 15 July, and led to the partition of Cyprus along the UN-monitored Green Line, which still divides Cyprus between the south and the Turkish-occupied north to this day.

The matter is that the greeks of the island organized and aimed to unite with greece after ww2, they created an armed group, EOKA and it was basically a terrorist group. attacked turkish population ta gain control of the whole island. all countries doing same thing to protect its people but some unbiased media calls some operations for peace and others for invade.

That's partly true but Turkey ended up capturing 36% of the land and throwing Greek Cypriots out of their homes , if it was not an invasion but a defense then they would just secure the Turkish people from being attacked nothing more but what they actually did was pure invasion.
I could make the Same argument about the expulsion and killing of Greek people during 1964-1965 living in Istanbul for years and being actual neighbours and friends with other Turkish people, if Greece was to "defend" them like you said you did in Cyprus and in the process capture a part of Istanbul for Greece would that also be fair?

My uncle was flying one of these helicopters during Cyprus operation. The exact number was 91. Turkish command was expecting medium level casualities and losing a part of fleet when passing Beşparmak Mountains, since the area was defended by 300-400 AA guns. It was yet a must to occupy inland roads to block Greek Guard reserves from the coast, for gaining superiority in landing line. Thus they decided to take the risk.
Actually almost all helicopters were hit several times and were full of holes. But none was down, and no one was killed. Thinking similar model guns of Greek Guard successfully downed a Noratlas aircraft by friendly fire and killed 32 Greek commandos from mainland, we know that these guns were no joke. So, these helicopters were very very lucky.
One of his friends also told me his own story to explain how it was a miracle. After dropping the soldiers he asked his superior to close the door, because they cannot take off fast enough to escape when doors are open, and they were under heavy fire. The officer was sitting at the back and he refused to move to open door as he was afraid. There has been a short dispute and the pilot forced him at gunpoint, telling him that as long as they are in the air mission the pilot is the one that gives orders. He could report it if he wished, when once they return to safety, but he better move his ass now. The officer finally got up from his seat and closed the door. When he hastly returned he discovered the huge AA bullet hole on the seat he was sitting just a few seconds ago. They all laughed at it for minutes and their dispute was never reported.
Years later my uncle was present in a NATO meeting as personal assisstant of a high ranked officer who was his close friend of arms from that war, he also wintessed American officers cornered Turks for getting information how the hell they actually came out Başparmak without single casuality, and kept rejecting the "pure luck" explanation.

I'm from Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus and i can say that it wasn't necessarily an invasion. Back in the 1950s Turkey, Greece and the UK signed a treaty which gave right such as "if you feel that your people are under attack you have the right to intervene". İn this case the Turkish Cypriots were under attack by the Greeks (Rumlar) because they believe that the island belongs to them ( which i will not comment my opinion about because i believe i would get in trouble somehow). What you are seeing right now is Turkey using it's rights to help the Turkish Cypriots

Turkish troops were responsible for wholesale and repeated rapes of women of all ages from 12 to 71, sometimes to such an extent that the victims suffered haemorrages or became mental wrecks. In some areas, enforced prostitution was practised, all women and girls of a village being collected and put into separate rooms in empty houses where they were raped repeatedly. In certain cases members of the same family were repeatedly raped, some of them in front of their own children. In other cases women were brutally raped in public. Rapes were on many occasions accompanied by brutalities such as violent biting of the victims causing severe wounding, banging their heads on the floor and wringing their throats almost to the point of suffocation. In some cases attempts at rape were followed by the stabbing or killing of the victims. Victims included pregnant and mentally retarded women.

But they kept talking and talking without doing anything while Turkish Cypriots were executed by firing squads so Turkey launched the operation and invaded a small part of the island. It was enough to stop widespread atrocities against Turkish Cypriots but there were still a lot of atrocities and a huge list of missing Turkish Cypriots. The worse now the international community was more worried about Turkish operation than terrorist EOKA government. They again continued talking and talking with doing absolutely nothing to save Turkish Cypriots so Turkey launched second operation and captured 40% of the island which permanently stopped all atrocities. We gave every opportunity for international community to make it right and even warned them many times we would invade Cyprus instead of allowing this to happen but nobody believed nor cared so here we are. In addition, for an operation like the one in Cyprus it wouldn't make sense for Turkish govenment to invest money on such drugs since the firepower, size of mobilization and the political stance of nations were more than enough for Türkiye to achieve it's goal, such chemicals only come into play in desperate situation and the Cyprus operation was very far from desperate for Türkiye. And I think you underestimate how much a Türk can feel comfortable in war. When we were still nomads war wasn't some exclusive event or a horrible situation, it was just another tuesday for us. Our culture is shaped by war and conflict thus war is not an unsettling time for us, for us it is our time to shine, it is our time to prove our worth, it is our time to make our nation and families back home proud. We see war as an oppurtunity, not a situation we were unwillingly forced into. When a Türk dies in war, we do not say "We are sorry for their loss.", we say "Vatan Sağolsun." which means "The nation shall live." It is considered a great honor to die in battle in our culture. Before Türks accepted Islam two of the main gods we worshipped were Kyzagan Khan and Alma Khanum, the god and goddess of war. If you were to die in battle by proving your worth it was believed that you'd become one with the gods and goddesses of Turkic culture. I am telling you all these because I want you to have the story and context behind why we can look at the face of death with a smile. It is not drugs, it is just who are and what we are. Following instructions from their leadership in Athens .( junta )..and after that coup they created and done , against our loyal government ( of Cyprus )..of that time .. on the 15 of July ..
Even if they had for the next five days ,all the information's about yours army preparations for the invasion ..
All this army and military equipment , your brought on the coast opposite Cyprus ( Mersin's ! or so )..
The naval fleet ,that was getting ready ..
The invasion fleet, that was outside ..the Kyrenias / Girne coasts ..
For all those five days ..they NEVER took ..a single measure about it ..a single alert .!
They let us had, a " Strategical Surprise "..!

We should be careful with our words. Invasion implies warmongering. What western media won’t tell you is that Turkish Cypriots were being ethically cleansed. Massacred, shot into graves that they were forced to dig themselves. Our relatives’ remains are still being discovered by excavators and our families are still being informed of the whereabouts of the relatives who disappeared and were never seen again. We deserve some respect and sensitivity when talking on this issue. I don’t even blame the average Greek Cypriots. They suffered as well. The people to blame as literally in every single issue with the world is the west. Britain and Greece helped fund the terrorist group EOKA in hopes to divide the nation. Britain cannot control people who are united. Look at every place they colonised, they divide and conquer.

The Greek Cypriot EOKA terrorist organization attacked the Turks in the 1960s. They attacked Turkish villages and killed the Turks. In fact, as far as I understand, you are unaware of the existence of Greek gangs who brutally murdered the wife and 3 children of Doctor Major Nihat İlhan, who was in charge of the Turkish Regiment Command, in the bathroom. The Turkish soldier did not go to the island that day because he was bored. It is an operation by the Turkish Armed Forces against Nikos Sampson and his gang, who suspend the 1960 Cyprus constitution by a coup d'etat and do not see the Turks as equal partners of the Cyprus state, for justifiable reasons. In fact, Greek Cypriots and Greece should be grateful to Turkey. If Turkey had not made an operation, the Greeks would have been led by the EOKA mercenaries, and they would have attacked the Greeks who opposed them, not only would they have killed the Turks. In Greece, the Colonels' junta would gain power with the Nikos Sampson coup in Cyprus, and you would completely break Greece from democracy and you would now encounter a very different Greece

bs.EOKA was not a terrorist organization, it was a party that wanted Cyprus to stop being a British colony and unify with Greece. Turkey baptized it as terrorists the same way it does with Kurds, which they slaughter in order to not let them form Kurdistan. Cyprus should unite with Greece because the 78% of its population was Greek and it was what the majority wanted. Turkey invaded an island that wasn't its own because Turks were just a 18% minority and they feared a union with Greece which was what the majority of Cypriot citizents really wanted. They used intercommunal violence as an excuse (because 600 Turks died during Bloody Christmas and 500 Greeks were slaughtered by Turkish Cypriots in an event just after Bloody Christmas). And with the excuse of an event, they invaded, displaced more than the entire country's 50% population of unarmed civilians which they threw out of their houses doing ethnic cleansing, raping and killing many people. They just grabbed an island they had no right to, disrespected the people's will, slaughtered killed and did much worse crimes that they accused the Cypriots of. And still to this day, Turkey keeps this island hostage. All the other you said are brainfckn bs, just as Russia says this to justify the invasion to Ukraine.
