    It really amazes me how much work you guys put into milling wood. You don't have a sawmill for trees that big so you have to take the extra step where most people wouldn't even mess with it.

    Totally agree the thickness of a slab needs to be thicker as it’s width increases. Enjoying your content 👍

    Great tip on keeping it centered. I have a 54 bar with a 660 Stihl. I use a boat hand winch to help pull the mill through the log.

    Use the colored epoxy method that is all the rage..... the epoxy will solidify the slab, and make up for any weaknesses. Beautiful slabs! Awesome saws and mill!

    Tisk, I do believe your having fun at work. I have done what your doing on very large Cedar in Forks Washington in the early seventies. I gained a half inch in arms length and lost a inch or two around the middle. that is close to fifty years ago. All that is over now as the rules and regulations guy made us quit then!! Damn good content and videoing

    I love the slabs it's absolutely beautiful grain. My only concern would be in the crotch area since it runs nearly the full length of the slabs. You're not goin to be able to keep it from separating entirely during the drying process but you could put things in place to reduce the size of the overall split.splits add character and offer other opportunities to make the piece stand out.

    I noticed a gap under the center of the mill. Is that a good reason to go thicker? Cupping probly plays in to this as well.
    Can't imagine the planer you would have to use.

      @@BlaiseBrogan I'm on it. I have a pile on burl ash slabs to tinker with. I have a vid of them. I chainsaw milled them. Pretty close to good enough. I'd like to flatten them a bit.

  • @RobertFay
    @RobertFay Před 5 lety +2

    Impressive approach (and fun, too) ... I am curious about a few things however:
    (1) How Much Bar Oil do you find you use? (do you cut 'dry' so as not to stain the wood?)
    (2) Did you find that 'See-Sawing' the Blade failed to cut faster?

    • @BlaiseBrogan
      @BlaiseBrogan  Před 5 lety +3

      Thanks Robert, I use bio chain oil you have to have it! I try to avoid see-sawing as much as possible usually but on the big mill you have to do a bit.
      Great to have you here bud, Blaise

  • @arthuranderson9821
    @arthuranderson9821 Před 3 lety +1

    I have the same mill. How do you avoid having the cut “cup” from to the middle of the bar sagging due to its own weight?

    • @BlaiseBrogan
      @BlaiseBrogan  Před 3 lety +1

      I fix one end in the mill then pull on the top of the uprights to add tension to the bar good luck, cheers

    Hey Blaise, what's your input on cut times from single head to double head milling? I've read that running a double head rig can triple or quadruple cut speed vs a single head.

    • @BlaiseBrogan
      @BlaiseBrogan  Před 5 lety +3

      Hi mate, its difficult to say I would say about 50% faster but it is a bit of an art setting it up to get a good cut. I would mill one engine if I had a choice. cheers
