This episode was the most fascinating out of all 9. Can't pick a favorite though
Thank you for watching and commenting! Making this video I realized a bias having unknowingly been a fan of Peter Chung's previous works.
World record my favorite
they are ALL worthy of many viewings....ya always see or hear something ya didnt catch the first time...
I find it about equal to the second renaissance one and two. A fitting place for the story to end also, humans develop AI machines then eventually become machines themselves. It brings the whole story full circle in a very clever way.
Matriculated almost was a reminder of the 2nd renaissance, on how humans shaped machines to serve them, but became a victim of their own demise - and was the first time I've wondered whether the machines were trying to help humans all along throughout all films, and almost try to save humans from themselves? Like green eyed machine just wanted to show Alexa the beautiful dream world she showed it. And even the 'bad' machines only kill humans to revive them in a dream world utopia - which is what humans strived for when they made machines in the first place, to live in a utopia.
So are machines just carrying out their original purpose, to serve humans the utopia they wanted? Humans are so served they never even have to move - they're permanently resting in pods and get to dream forever. When the machines wipe out everyone in Zion they take them out of cold underground poverty and put them in a new improved dream world where life is easier everytime, introducing new human desires: choice, love, and more each time. Is a less stated reason as to why machines can't exist without humans, that humans give machines purpose - which is to serve humans? Damn the rabbit hole is endless.
That is why I always suggest people watch the Animatrix *Before* Reloaded & Revolutions because of the assessments you just made. I feel like Matriculated & the 2nd Renaissance especially, prepare you for the idea that it isn't as simple as humans are good, machines are bad. And a lot of people reject Reloaded because it changes the rules and goes outside the typical action movie arc. The Architect tells us there are levels of survival they're willing to accept. The machines don't need humans, it was quite the opposite.
The machines know consciousness is God like. Even if they despise humans they will always want to attain that.
Damn, so interesting. Man even after 20 damn years there's always something new to peel away from these masterpieces! how is that even possible!
But ya it seem like a really neat interpretation/theory, that the machines are still serving their purpose, almost like a paper clip paradox.
Hell I'd say the first version of The Matrix supports this theory. The Machines could have made it horrible, as vengeance for Humanity's attempted genocide. It could have been like a prison, or a nightmare. but the very first version of the matrix was a LITERAL utopia, a heavenly "all yours needs and wants met instantly" place. But the human mind couldn't accept that and rejected it, so they made other versions. But I think it says a lot that the very first thing the machines tried to do, right after the war when all the horrors Humanity had inflicted on them were still fresh in their minds, was to try and put the vanquished humans in heaven, and only human nature forced them to abandon that idea.
I feel like you missed the idea that the machine might have let Alexa's consciousness absorb into itself, thus saving her mind and being the reason why it sits in the same spot as Alexa in the beginning. We aren't supposed to know if it worked out but where it sits at the end is a big hint that at least part of her survives inside the machine.
Similar to a competing neural network, it's possible that she became a subconscious within the machine, driving it towards her own goals. Like the Oracle even hints at, Neo's subconscious has already decided what it wants, and so he doesn't actually have choices to make, but only to consciously understand why he made those choices/wants what he wants. Even the Merovingian says as much, with his monologue about how humans are out of control because of their biology, and how it reacts to cake.
my boy the runner bot be looking like giorno's requiem stand.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
I just watched Animatrix and I couldn't stop thinking how it looks like the G.E.R.
@Efrain Galvan The digital form of the robot. It looks like a golden alien.
never fully understood why Alexa screamed at the end when she realizes shes in the construct with the machine. I mean she loaded into that construct all the time. Why was she frightened so much at the end
I didn't really get into this in the video because my answer to your question is my own interpretation. I've always seen Alexa screaming and quitting as an expression to represent the hypocrisy of man. Alexa herself questions the morality of their methods in the conversation with the scientist:
"I'm afraid they'll figure out that we've made up the thing in our heads." - Alexa
She knows they are deceiving the machines, yet they proceed anyway. The Machine converts to helping humans by way of deception. Man is ok with this, as long as they are the ones doing the deceiving and not the victims of deceit. Now at the end of the Matrix Revolutions, many of the machines change their eye color to green, because of the sacrifice that Neo made to save *everyone* . So that is peace, without deception.
However, in Matriculated, I believe Alexa would've rather died than be in the construct without her human companions because she knows the truth behind the façade. The machine is essentially an example of the saying "ignorance is bliss", but sadly, Alexa leaves him all alone, despite the machine only doing what it believed was right both when it fought for the machines and when it fought for humans. A mere soldier following orders, with no real understanding of why the war exists.
@@Neomatrixology Very interesting interpretation thanks for your input. It was so sad and memorable when i watched the first time to see Alexa (who is seemingly invulnerable) to die with such fear and despair. Always questioned why the writers put that in. Like her mind was breaking from some realization of something terrible
All of this 🤟🏼plus, why did she have to be in her underwear? 🙄

I interpreted this story as the runner taking an artificial DMT trip to the astral world. The runner's ai mind was advanced enough to have a conscious that could transcend dimensions. Giving this new world strips the runner of his ego and changes his perspective on the humans.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
That's exactly how I interpretted it. The humans became the "entities" of DMT trips and were guiding the runner through the various realms and spaces within the DMT experience, ultimately leading the runner into the theatre.
It's here where the runner begins experiencing ego death. As the runner begins shedding its "body" (the ego), the runner is stripped down to a its raw "self" -interestingly enough, underneath the physical body/ego of the runner is an organic entity. Struggling to catch the yellow orb is the runner fighting ego death which ultimately ends in failure as the runner experiences full ego death.
The consciousness of the runner then follows the ego as it "breaks through" and is "reborn" on the other side with only the serpent/millipede left as a reminder of the runner's former self. To me, this creature is a representation of the inhuman, self satisfying, destructive ego the runner once had. Instead of realizing that the creature is not of itself and something left over during transformation, the runner simply ignores it. To me, it is at this moment that the runner experiences the Tibetan Buddhist concept of "Bardo" in which there exists a small gap of time during reincarnation between the death of the old body and rebirth in which a person can look back on the choices they've made in life and grow from the experience in order to avoid similar mistakes in the next life.
Later on we see that ego death alone is not enough to purge oneself of past transgressions and allowing the remnants of an imperfect ego to continue on as before will inevitably lead to chaos. This is shown when the creature begins to destroy the realm and bury the runner. The next sequence shows something resembling the runner being pushed through a womb/birth canal and experiencing new life. Unfortunately, the former ego has also made its way into the new life which scares the runner as it attempts to run away from the vileness of its former ego. Alexa, whom the runner has come to love and accept as an embodiment of love, guidance, and kindness -unlike the other entities which play tricks on the runner or take it deeper down the rabbit hole, Alexa is constantly smiling and guiding the runner towards true change in itself- appears as a savior and as the runner takes her hand the darkness of the former ego is destroyed; replaced with beautiful light signifying that absolution is not only possible, but within arms reach of the runner.
Realizing that during Bardo, the runner made the mistake of allowing its former ego to continue existing, and watching all the humans die at the hands of embodiments of the former ego ultimately leaves the runner heartbroken and in a desperate attempt to shed itself completely of its past ego and correct its wrongs, the runner plugs back in with Alexa but it is far too late. Alexa is now going through her own Bardo and the last thing she sees is the juxtaposition of the former egos darkness surrounding the runner, and the half actualized new ego. The runner is now left to deal with the consequences of its ego in this life instead of given a second chance to clensed itself of its past through a spiritual and philosophical reincarnation, joining Alexa and her team in their fight against extinction.
@@RileyGein Excellent interpretation....its been brought to my attention this could ALSO be what becomes the Oracle Program in LATER versions of the Matrix....let that one stew for a minute ...lol
Okay 👍 and Give Your Life To Jesus Christ ✝️🛐
Would be cool if they were able to grow a human body for the runner and encase its "ghost" into it
A more benign version of what Smith did to Bane
Is that Runner's choice to convert how the Oracle was created?
actually...that is possible...now that i think on it....lol....the Architect , it is assumed , made the Oracle program slightly imperfect, to study humans more closely ... but when questioned by NEO when the Architect was talking about a more "intuitive" less perfect mind-program was needed to understand humans....he just grimaced when Neo asked him if it was the Oracle...and he just shrugged like " boy....please"...lol....so yes ....you could be right...a machine in the real world, that somehow managed self-awareness....and chose to side with humans ....and the one in this episode could be that one

me too!....it finally found "friends" then had to watch them die....welcome to Life....
I dont know what to feel but it felt creepy&scary for me to see Alexa in horror with a robot in an endless artificial world that she just have tried to decieve/fool.
Such a good channel! I watched animatrix as a wee child and there were a lot of questions left unanswered and no way to rewatch the ol dvd in full

Watching the matrix right now! Got a lot of flashbacks of this too!
You know what u didn't catch ? U didn't notice that this story is about the oracle and how choice was introduced into the system well that my theory at least but I'm almost sure I'm correct rewatch with that in mind see if I'm right
I believe the scientist explains to Alexa & makes the same observation or comes to the same conclusion as the Oracle as far as choice. However, it is also possible that this story takes place prior to the Oracle's discovery. I believe that the variety of machine models displayed in this episode could suggest that it occurred during the Beta stages of the Matrix, before the prophecy of the one was used as a system of control.
It's worth noting that the bodies inside the simulation are very much like in Alex Grey paintings. The whole simulation is very much like a psychedelic trip.
There was definitely a psychedelic element. I wonder if Peter Chung & the Wachowskis did some visualization "research" together lol
I didn't realize the first time I watched this that the runner at the end was suppose to be the main runner (dumb I know). So I interpreted the ending as Alexa realizing she was stuck in the matrix with a machine and couldn't remove herself. Distraught she faded Into the matrix, turning the simulation into a black void were her and the runner are stuck forever. But now I realize I'm just an idiot.
I was 16 when this was released and me and my friends took mushrooms and watched it on a projector, it was awesome.
Well Done!. I'm surprised the elements from Matriculated weren't more overtly accentuated in Resurrections.
in the movie we have synthients and is possible the aftermath is the machine civil war
I think the robot is waiting on the beach for more of him to arrive so they can join him in oblivion
Thank you for watching and commenting!
I think the bot we see at the end survived and spread his new information to other machines, resulting eventually in what we see in the matrix 4
I now see Matriculated in different light. Excellent video! Especially the part with the green eyed machine that took Neo's body. What if there is a faction in the machine society developed by the converted machine that actually protects humans and they were the ones who programmed the Oracle and the Architect?
Stargazer! Appreciate the positive feedback. We don't really get much background information on the origins for the Oracle or Architect other than what little details they gave in his Reloaded speech. But as far as the green vs red eyed machines, they did explore the red side in the Matrix online with the General and his *commandos* which were basically red eyed machines who rejected the truce.

That is a really interesting idea. They already had the green light status light installed though implying it was just a maintenance bot. It threw Neo in the sewer.
Why did the machine decide to view itself in a humanoid form while in the Construct? It didn't earlier on...but it chose to at one point and remained so even before re-writing its protocols. Humans never truly change from their appearance or form from their actual ones in the World of the Real, so why did the Runner decide to? Adaptation to the environment? Mimicry of the other entities/humans? Peer pressure?
Because they are systematically hacking into the machines mind to persuade it to join them. The humans have perfected their technique and everything is designed to turn the machines
Chung drew most of my childhood wow
Thank you for watching and commenting! Weird right?!? My mind was blown when I saw his complete resume. Explains my bias for this episode for sure.
One of my favorites from the anthology - gave off heavy Aeon Flux (original animated series) vibes which I loved.
Absolutely! Chung said he approached the humans the same way he did for Aeon. And the opening chase scene just screamed Aeon.
Exactly!!!!
Thanks for an explanation ;)
The animatrix is very intersting.

Thank you for watching, commenting, and taking the yellow pill!
Even though Chung made no claim of there being overarching continuity between the episode and the franchise as a whole, I still like to think that the converted Runner became the Oracle. It even had a humanesque RSI which was vaguely Oracle-like.
>Runner is subject to what is effectively a psyop
>It learns to hate its own form and trust humans to save it from itself
>It's left alive at the end, where it could ruminate on the psychological techniques it was subject to
>Returns to the machine city, where they're struggling with the perfect Matrix issue
>Convinces the machines into accepting a long-con, involving the creation of Zion and the path of the One
>Machines trust it because the path works well enough
>Eventually, the Runner/Oracle nudges Trinity into loving Neo, which was not done before, and everything starts unravelling, as intended
>As said in the video: green-eyed machine collecting Neo at the end of Revolutions.
>Resurrections shows that the Runner/Oracle had even been preparing Sati for those future events, adding weight to the long-con theory
I got The Matrix Resurrections trailer on one of your videos!!
No kidding. The Aeon Flux influence was all up in that.
Watched this high af, it was glorious
This shit tripped me out I felt like I was on drugs watching this. It was amazing lol
The Matrix and then the Animatrix were SO good at the time. And the effects so amazing that a friend of mine downloaded a telesync copy of Reloaded but refused to watch it until he'd seen the movie in the cinema - how many films would make you do that now?
And then the sequels didn't stick the landing.
The Animatrix showed the Wachowskis really thought about the universe of the Matrix much deeper than what the original film could show. It's a shame there weren't sequels to the Animatrix, I think a high budget TV series, ala Castlevania or (perhaps too 'on the nose') Ghost In The Shell, would have been perfect as a way to continue exploring more abstract things like in Matriculation.
A 10 Minute video explaining the meaning behind a 15 minute video from 15 years ago which also aired a rerun of one of the shorts from 10 years ago on Adult Swim, Coincidence, I think not.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
No machine getting sympathy from me lol. Thanks for the explanation just rewatched the entire series
Can't forget Reign: The Conqueror when bringing up Peter Chung
The Matrix Humans made the fatal mistake of not making Offensive bias to destroy Mendicant bias. Had they made Offensive Bias they probably would've survived longer and possible won.
What if that machine turned out to be the oracle
Thanks for watching and commenting! I have a theory about the Oracles origin, but have not made a video about it yet...wanted to cover Seraph first
u are not alone in that thought....Oracle couldn't've been programmed with free will/choice by the architect....so that leaves ONLY humans to teach a Program that "idea"
@@xisburnttoast5372 OMG yess! I just watched Reloaded and Revolutions and had a question of how Oracle - a programme had the thought of free will/choice and defined the concept of love to Neo since they are what the machines needed for evolution. And now this vid and your comments made me believe that this runner might be the Oracle lol
@@haiyi2447 Imagination is also something which machines need to have in order to become alive.

I did not like the way this film ended. Peter Chung also made a Riddick film, "Dark Fury." And a Britney Spears music video. This film features Melinda Clarke.
they were completely unaware that the sentinels they had hoped to catch would call for back up?
They had captured other machines by surprise prior. I suspect that the story takes place in a previous and arguably early version of the Matrix. The runners planting tracking devices appeared to be a tech upgrade they were both unaware of and unprepared for.
Nice!
