I had an experience where I told a really good friend that I just got diagnosed as Autistic. They responded with saying, "I'm so sorry." I really love this person and they honestly didn't know better, so I was able to very graciously educate them about acceptance and neurodiversity. Poor thing, she got all embarrassed. I feel really bad that she feels bad. It's going to be okay.

I started a new job recently, and was surprised to find out a coworker of mine is also autistic. I’ve been in a group chat with them and a few other coworkers, and the two of us bonded a bit over both being autistic. It felt really nice to be able to be open about it and connect with someone else over it. Then another coworker started sending a lot of memes about autism. This surprised me, so I asked if they were autistic also, and said sorry I didn’t realize! They responded with “I think we all have a bit of that dawg in us”….Idk how to describe it, but that made me feel reeeeally weird. Then ANOTHER coworker said “yeah if autism is a spectrum then we’re all on it!”. I went from feeling like I was finally connecting with people to feeling extremely disconnected, once again… almost feeling a sense of regret for being open?Idk why. The whole thing just made me feel uncomfortable and like I don’t want to be seen anymore…

When I was diagnosed with Autism, my Mom asked me if I there was anyone that I wanted her to tell and anyone that I didn't want her to tell. I said that she can tell close family and friends but i want to tell my friends. Since my teacher had to find out so that I could be allowed time out in class, she came to me and said that she should probably let my classmates know so that they understand why I am different. I told her that I wasn't sure yet and that I'll think about it but she ended up going and having a talk with my classmates about how I am Autistic and then later that day, I had a girl come to me and ask me if Autism is contagious. I told her no it is not. Luckily I at least got to tell my friends from other schools myself. Long story short, do not leak info about someone unless they have told you that they are comfortable with you doing so..

Thank you for this it’s exactly what I needed. I’ve been waiting to tell my family until I have an official diagnosis (even though I scored way above average on rdos, raads-r,cat-q, etc) but my family keeps inviting me out to eat and I don’t know how to tell them I can’t even swallow certain foods so I’ve just been getting by calling myself a vegan which is a more socially acceptable way to decline foods🥴. After watching this I may not tell them for awhile because of a history of them invalidating my health concerns not that neurodiversity is a health concern. Great content!

Thank you, this was helpful ! This part is especially impactful for me : "it's not about convincing someone that you're autistic".
There is someone I would like to convince, but it's probably not a good idea to insist. I told them, and they answered "you're not autistic". I'd better get diagnosed before I talk to them again about it, or we'll just argue and I will lose all my confidence again...

In my own personal experience, even having a professional diagnosis doesn't convince some people. I've had people in my own life not change their mind even when I tell them I have a diagnosis.
