Your videos are entertaining, educational, inspirational, and subtly humorous... no music necessary. You (and your fellow puzzlers) have an amazing, unique talent. Just discovered the channel and wow, I admire your patience and dedication!
    I had to check out the maths haha. So the mathematical formula that is linked in the description proves that to figure out how much harder a 2000 or 3000 etc... pieces puzzle is compared to a 1000 pieces puzzle, you should take the number of thousands of pieces and square it (multiply it by itself). So a 2000 pieces puzzle is 4 times harder than a 1000 pieces puzzle And a 3000 pieces is 9 times harder.
    Therefore, with its 42000 pieces, this puzzle would be about 42*42 = 1764 times harder than a 1000 pieces puzzle !!!!!! How amazing is that ?!

    • @puzzlemethis.
      @puzzlemethis.  Před 5 měsíci +2

      @luguinch.mp4 Hi and thanks for watching, Thanks, that explanation was easier to understand than the website was. I think that would be accurate for a puzzle of one color, but being able to sort out similar colors and going by shape should make it a little easier (I hope). john

    Wow, you have come so far already! I remember thinking only a couple of months back, that it seemed halfway done. Now it looks more like 2/3 or 3/4 done. And those mountains by no means look easy.
    I just compared the time you worked on the puzzle to me doing my 9120 piece Magical Dragonforest Puzzle. I completed it in just under 78 hours. You are already almost at 2650 hours. It just blows my mind how much puzzling you have done. What a marathon! I hope you enjoy it till the end. You have overcome so many difficult things already (I am thinking of the repeated cut in the sky...). You must have never ending patience and endurance. I am happy to hear that your friends and family are coming in from time to time to take part. It is just such a special puzzle, the way you do it all in one go.

    I had to laugh when I saw my CZcams name in your book - although you already prepared me. What an honour!
    As a mathematician I also want to delve into the formulae. Sorry for that. 🙂 The article mentions that applying the factor 42 for a 42.000 piece puzzle is (obviously) wrong when comparing with a 1000 piece puzzle and they give an argument why 42^2 = 42*42 = 1764 could be a good factor. As the user fellowpuzzler noted below this factor seems too high and only applicable for single color puzzles.
    I hereby propose the factor 42^1.5 = 42 * squareroot(42) = 272 without any reasoning at all - except that Karen Puzzles needed 67.3 hours for her 9000 piece Minion puzzle and she can easily do a 1000 piece puzzle in a whopping 2.5 hours. My invented formula 9^1.5 = 9 * squareroot(9) = 27 fits good to that data - she needed 27 times longer (comparing 9K vs. 1K). 🙂
    If one assumes that my factor 272 is a good factor for comparing a 42.000 to a 1.000 puzzle (I have no idea if it does 🙂) then with your 2650 hours you are nearing the 10hour equivalent for a 1000 piece puzzle - which is feasible for such a difficult puzzle. Similar to a dogs life year being equivalent to 7 human life years, 272 hours spent on a 42.000 puzzle would be equivalent to 1 hour spent on a 1.000 puzzle.
    While 1764 seems to be too high a factor my number 272 just feels a little too low. But it was fun to think about it. Kudos to everybody that read that far on my mathematical ramblings. Haha!

    • @puzzlemethis.
      @puzzlemethis.  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @LogicMasterSteve Hi LogicMasterSteve, Thanks for taking the time to figure all that out. Your calculations make more sense than the websites. I can understand why we are slower than your estimate for us doing a 42,000 piece puzzle, Karen focuses when she is working on a puzzle and we usually have more than one person in the room and are more distracted. Using Karen as a reference point is about as scientific as anyone can get when doing calculations for anything puzzle related.😀 john

In last months video I showed the Church of our Lady before Tyn and I had a piece in a row by itself and a hole in the roof, and LogicMasterSteve said to take that piece out and put it in the hole in the roof and then move the roof down one row and it would fit. You can see it at 14:46(this time link will take you to this months video, not last months, I don't know how to change it) in last month's video. And soldiertwoface3690 found something similar with the Mala Strana tower. I think that I had to move it down a row or two, john

  • @fellowpuzzler
    @fellowpuzzler Před 5 měsíci +1

    I had a look at the puzzle website and I don't agree with their math at all. They failed to take into account the effect of sorting the pieces into small piles. A larger puzzle is more difficult because each piece has a smaller portion of the image and you have more pieces to deal with when doing a section with the same colour or texture but it is not exponentially more difficult as their math would suggest. If they were correct then doing a 5000 piece puzzle would take 25 times longer than a 1000 piece puzzle. In reality, it takes me about 6 times longer and if you compare the time it would take me to do five 1000 piece puzzles then a 5000 piece puzzle is about 20% more difficult. No more.

    • @puzzlemethis.
      @puzzlemethis.  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @fellowpuzzler Hi and yes, they say in the Q and A at the end that the numbers would more apply to a solid color puzzle, and sorting by shape would also make it a little faster. One of the sites I looked at based the numbers on having to try 50% of the pieces each time to find the one that fits, and then doing the same for the next piece, and so on, but going by shape would speed that up. john

    • @LogicMasterSteve
      @LogicMasterSteve Před 5 měsíci +1

      @fellowpuzzler You can do a 5.000 piece puzzle in the same time as six 1.000 piece puzzles? Wow! I need 2.7-3.0 times as long for a 2.000 piece puzzle compared to a 1.000 piece puzzle. And my only 5.000 piece puzzle I puzzled leasurely over some weeks - without timing myself. Nowhere near factor 6, though.
      Thus I suggested to use the factor N^1.5, see my other post under this video (I used data from Karen Puzzles also). What do you think about my formula? It would give the factor 5^1.5=5*sqrt(5)=11 and not 6 for your 5.000 piece puzzle, though... Useful?

    • @fellowpuzzler
      @fellowpuzzler Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@LogicMasterSteve Hi Steve. I have a simple explanation for my estimate of 6 times. When I do a 1000 piece puzzle, I just flip and go. No sorting whatsoever (I hate sorting). But, when I do a 5000 piece puzzle, I am much more disciplined and do a detailed sort and sub-sort by piece shape when required. I use foam boards and whatever advanced puzzling technique that may be appropriate for the situation. Because of that, my ppm (piece per minute) rate is about the same as when doing a 1000 piece puzzle. If I did all that for 1000 piece puzzles then I think my ratio would match pretty close to your formula.
      Your formula makes a lot more sense to me than what the website has calculated. I think their premise was that you need to try every piece in every orientation until you find the right one then start over for next piece until the puzzle is finished. Nobody does puzzles like that.
