- Mystical-type experiences are profound and often characterized by an authoritative sense of the unity and sacredness and sometimes interpreted as an encounter with God or Ultimate Reality. Although such experiences have been described by mystics and religious figures throughout the ages, there are few experimental studies because such experiences usually occur at low rates and often unpredictably. Psilocybin in the form the Psilocybe genus of mushrooms has been used for centuries within some cultures for religious and healing purposes.
This presentation, held September 15, 2020, reviewed a series of studies investigating the effects of psilocybin administered to carefully screened and psychologically prepared volunteers who were encouraged to close their eyes and direct their attention inwards. Under such conditions, psilocybin occasions profound personally and spiritually meaningful mystical-type experiences in the majority of participants.
Roland Griffiths is Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosciences and Director of the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His principal research focus is on the behavioral and subjective effects of mood-altering drugs.

I want to be on a psilocybin study so bad! I'm tired of all the antidepressants daily. Living with clinical depression most of my life and taking antidepressants, I'm living their limitations and significant side-effects that are not fun to deal with. Watching all these studies and findings on psilocybin gives me hope for the future and the quality of life that I will have remained. I wish I could get a taste of this experience now.

I've had both a natural mystical experience and a psychedelic one. The natural one was the classic Christian "born again" experience, which I had at the age of 19. It was characterized by surrender, tears and trait changes that have endured to this day. The psychedelic experience on psilocybin, at the age of 56, was what I would consider more mystical, experiential (in a physical sense), and awe inspiring. It seemed more real than what I experienced as a teenager. That said, I did not see as dramatic of a change in personal traits after the psychedelic experience. I've since chalked this up to a number of things: 1. I had already been "born again", so the ego was not as big of an issue. 2. There were 37 years separating the events, and I am not the same person I was back then. 3. The natural experience was a culmination of years of introspection about who I was and what I was "meant" to be, as opposed to the rather quick immersion into psychedelia and the things it revealed. All in all, the psychedelic mystical experience did improve certain traits I had not fully cultivated, such as a connection to nature, deeper empathy towards others, and a deeper love for myself. I would love to see more research into the intersection of natural and psychedelic mystical experiences. My Christian faith has definitely been enhanced by the psilocybin experience, and I seem to have a deeper understanding of the truths taught by the Christian tradition, such as love your neighbor as yourself. (I usually ignored the "yourself" part.)

Did you ever have bouts of major depression and anxiety even though you are born again? Because I am born again and I still have struggled with these issues since childhood so I am praying that I could try it and it heal me.
@@georginarandolphgirl66 those are normal human reactions to our society and environment, they wont be healed by any one thing, except maybe the abolition of the capitalist system. You can learn to be more emotionally intelligent and identify and then either avoid or adapt to triggers for your anxiety, and you can get better sleep/diet exercise for depression. But the human experience is interpreting life in waves and you will still go through those cycles, though perhaps not as intense, regardless of whatever dogma you may wish ascribe to.

Interesting “testimony”. I had the born again experience when I was 16. Now I’m 30 and going through a phase where I’m not sure if I believe there is a God out there who, even though loving us, tell us what to do etc or if that’s just our consciousness in Action but not necessarily a totally independent supernatural being living “in us”. And this is to say I spent 3 years on a Christian school having “prayer” and mystical experiences almost every single day!

The desire to quit has to come from within- wanting to(want to quit) isn't enough- the addict has to really want to quit. Psychedelics can traverse the addict across the (sometimes) monumental divide between this two positions. I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. I started to explore this subject after watching 'Nine Perfect Strangers', a TV mini series where nine stressed people attend a luxury wellness retreat where they are given daily doses of psilocybin in their smoothies. I discovered that there is research being done into the medicinal use of magic mushrooms, an illegal substance here in Australia, but which many Australians try for fun when they holiday overseas in Bali.

I just saw the documentary “fantastic fungi”. My favorite part by far was the psilocybin study part with Griffiths. Incredibly interesting!! Two cancer patients spoke about their experience. the experience the lady had is very similar to what some people experience during a near death experience; when they are clinically dead. Would it not be interesting to test psilocybin on people who’ve had those experiences and listen in how far they differ feeling-wise?
The fact that Griffiths doesn't understand Stang's first question, about darkness and absence in mystical experience, indicates the narrowness and imbalance of this study. I'm glad he brought it up. The mystical isn't only the light, and the pleasant, and it doesn't take too much religious studies experience to encounter examples that show how complex and varied mystical experiences are. My own work focuses on Kāl Bhairav, a deity whose name literally means "the dark cry of fear." Here, the fear is not negative, and it is not scarring; it is transformative, and occurs in tandem with mystical insight. It a central metaphor for, and a very real description of the effects of, a centuries-long network of practice and experience. This study is a good start: I really hope they are sure to have a Religious Studies scholar or two on their team next time.

Griffiths gave a great response to this question... He said the mystical experiences w/psilocybin also include experience with darkness and absence, but that the survey instruments they're using do not adequately capture that aspect of the experience. Further scientific study will shed light on that aspect of the psilocybin experience. Griffiths understood the question perfectly and gave a great response.

the key is your experience is what you make it.
Great video. I have never used any drugs, not even smoked a cigarette, I have no issue with people who do, but I suspect it's because when I was 11 I experienced my first samadhi, or Oneness. It effected the rest of my life, I was atheist and was still sort of atheist after, I didn't feel a need to be this or that.
I have seen a lot of these talks. This is probably the best because they compared it to meditators.
I suggest psilocybin doesn't provide the mystical experience, I suggest it does what meditation does, which is slow the mind sufficiently to drop the ego. The most powerful experience I had started while walking to work at age 49, it lasted 3 hours. I was very aware that I was not the body, I was everything including empty space, but still beyond that, everything including empty space was an appearance within me. I could not feel the footsteps of the body, the senses of the body were not in my experience, my vision wasn't from the eyes, it was all mind, but I know that will sound crazy. There was more to it, but that will do.

Is the chart shown at 19:50 mark of this video mislabeled? The amount of psylocibin listed is extremely low and would not produce any mystical type experiences. Maybe I'm missing something. Can someone shed some light on this for me?
Since the amount of psylocibin varies so much in different strains of mushroom fruits, they probably administered a dose of synthesized, pure, (and therefore more potent) compound so that they could have an accurate, measurable amount which could be repeated across the study.
It is mg/kg. So a 170lb, 75kg person would have a 2gm dose.

DOES ANYONE HAVE INSIGHT INTO/INFORMATION AS TO WHETHER any of these psychoactive "foods" were used to any extent in Europe and/or the Middle East anytime during the last, say, 1000 years? In Medieval times? During the Renaissance? The Enlightenment?
There is some evidence that the alchemists were into it, stories of witches flying on broomsticks after drinking their potions, 'cunning' or 'wise' women had a lot of herbal knowledge. Some argue that legends like the holy grail and the fountain of youth, are codes for the knowledge of these plants. There is repeated evidence from a number of cultures that the priest class would keep this knowledge secret - because it was the source of their power and position in the society. The priest class has been aware of it and the Catholics have been actively fighting against them since Roman times. That's why all reference to them during this time is repressed, just like today, weirdo drug users tend to keep quiet about it due to heavy social judgement about it. This is a battle for control of your mind that has been going on for thousands of years.

I'd wondered if these chemicals may've assisted artists centuries ago develop insight into and skillful application of perspective, and architectural principles (etc) too.

50:50 This is a malformed categorization scheme, if most of the mystical experiences that have been categorized as "naturally occurring" (a misnomer per Ott since plants are natural) i.e. more accurately designated as "non-drug" experiences, were actually induced by visionary plants.
We have massively mis-categorized far too many mystical experiences as non- drug-induced, which were in fact induced by visionary plants.
It has not been established that these episodes were "naturally" occurring, but through sheer bias, we have simply assumed, falsely, that traditional mysticism is non-drug.

I have bipolar disorder. I have had meaningful psychotic experiences that were spiritual and transformative.
