The Treasure Called the Psilocybes: Paul Stamets

  • In the second half of an extended talk at SAND 18, Paul Stamets, author, mycologist, medical researcher and entrepreneur, tells stories of the early years of research into psychoactive mushrooms, and describes a number of species and their characteristics, in particular psilocybes. He then surveys, and shows short films about, recent research into the therapeutic use of psilocybin, including microdosing. He ends by introducing a number of lesser known fungus species, and makes the case for acknowledging their value, not just for medicine, but for humanity as a whole.

We need advocacy for these medicines and the people that need them immediately. So with one, brain cells are repaired and reborn and the other starts unlocking unused pathways in the brain. Its groundbreaking to say the least.

I was an atheist for the first 20 years of my life. When I did psilocybin the first time, I was no longer an atheist. That’s how powerful the experience was. I recently took a macro dose of psilocybin after not doing them for 12 or 13 years. I was able to heal intense trauma that had been following me around, as well as debilitating depression that had taken over my life. Not to mention...at one point, my consciousness was traveling between dimensions, and I felt our universe teaming with life outside the Earth. I also heard the Earth wheezing as if it was sick. Love presented itself to me as an actual “dimension” in itself. Love...or God....literally showed itself to me as a particle or substance that surrounds and connects everything. I came out of that experience a nicer, more emotionally-charged person. I don’t experience clinical depression anymore, and I feel more connected to the Earth and my family than I ever have. This shit is the real deal, folks.

Psychedelic mushrooms gave me the strength and the courage to believe in ME!
My abusive husband sat on my backside and repeated drove his fists into my ribs, breaking many. On occasion, he'd black my eyes... put a gash on the side of my head.
I was young, I was afraid for my life and my children.
I was given mushrooms and told to "go inside myself". (My young children were not there.)
At one point I found myself sitting on the carpet looking into the floor length mirror.
I remember my reflection as being blurred, but as "time" went on, my focus became intense, my reflection - sharp.
I know I had a "conversation" but don't recall much, except that what I just relayed, I've never forgotten.
Not long after, I gathered my 2 boys, some clothes, and walked out the door. We never looked back.
    That was 35 yrs ago.
BTW, the house we lived in at the time did not have carpet, and I've never owned a floor length mirror.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed a psilocybin reform bill into law in February 2021, immediately reclassifying possession of up to an ounce of psychedelic-containing mushrooms as a disorderly persons offense.
The new classification means individuals caught with small amounts of psilocybin are now subject to a maximum $1,000 fine, up to six months in jail or both. Previously the offense was a third-degree crime and carried a penalty of between three to five years behind bars and fines of up to $15,000.

I suffered a mild traumatic brain injury and suffer from chronic physical pain throughout my body. The pain, poverty because I cannot work, and stress has almost killed me on many occasions. I have lived in a constant of fear, anxiety, stress and depression as a result. 40 years of mental torment and physical pain that has led to PTSD. Mood and behaviour changes affected me greatly including trips to mental institutions for suicidal depression and fines or jails because I used alcohol to try and treat myself but it only caused more trouble. I have been seeking relief from my pain and torments for 40 years. 27 years ago I stopped drinking and started to use Cannabis. That saved my life. But still i suffered even more now without any means of treatments. Mushrooms I had about two years ago worked better than anything tried previously especially for the anxiety and depression. Only one dose left me with a more calm and peaceful feeling for at least three days after. Better than alcohol, Cannabis, Prozac or any other thing I have tried. Being somewhat of a medical professional myself especially in the diagnosis and treatment of Chronic Pain and brain injury I would love to take part in any further studies and offer myself as a study, and to promote this medicine for Veterans and the public who suffer from the same things i do. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

But I am a person who has lived the horror of being a Heroin addict for fifteen years , and got clean in prison . I remember being in a cell with nothing but a blanket for two weeks , and the only thing that got me through that with my sanity in tact were my three psilocybin trips I had twenty years earlier .

Mush grows in cow poop where I live. I've always called them "liberty caps" but that could be incorrect. As a teenager, on a rainy day, you could start at one end of the field, and pick what you found. They grew so fast we could go back to the start of the field and they will have grown again, in only a couple hours. Only in fall. They were potent, I dosed many of them, grew up on it. There was a film on the cap, like a good. When you broke the cap the film would spread out. That's how we were able to tell the difference between another mushroom that looked just like it. The gooey film on the cap. Change your perspective on life.
