2:42 a token box, used to store and withdraw tokens for the section of line it's based on. to access the 'key' (if you like) you need permission from control, which is communicated through bell codes by pushing the button to the right of the main frame. hope this helps :)

Nice one Sam, I know the line well, I have family in Torquay and when I visit I always try to visit and ride the line.
4110 is a long term restoration project. She was withdrawn in 1965 from Pontypool Road shed and ended up in the Barry scrap yard. She was rescued in 1979 by the Great Western Society (Southall Group) who started her restoration. In 1982 she was moved to Tyseley for restoration, but long before the work could be finished the Southall Group ran into fiscal trouble and merged with the better known Didcot branch of the GWS. As Didcot already had a number of large Prarries, and no need or room for another they put her up for sale. In 1995 she was eventually brought by the West Somerset Railway and moved to Minehead. As she had a lot of work needed, not having steamed since 1965, she was a low priority for restoration so very little work was done on her, bar a few coats of paint to help keep the rust at bay, and by 2017 the WSR needed siding space so offered her for sale again. This time she was brought by the 4110 group, a group of WSR members in order to complete her restoration. In the long term she will return to the WSR, but at the moment she is being stored at Kingswear pending a move to the South Devon Railways workshops at Buckfast where the majority of the work will take place. Her owners want her back in service by 2025.
And yes they do run diesels on the Dartmouth, there is a resident class 25, which is used as a standby in case of breakdown and for some 'off peak' trains, she is normally in the shed a Paignton when not in use. They also have three shunters, an 04 at Churston (which you filmed), an 08 based at Paignton for carriage shunting and a Hunslet used on works trains. They also have a yearly diesel gala weekend with all sorts of visiting locos, in recent years the visitors have included Deltics, Westerns, Hymeks and many other.
    Have a great week
    Jon

The machine you saw was an electric key token instrument. On single lines it was used to ensure no head on collisions occurred. When the signalman wants to let a train into the single line he uses bell codes to contact the signalman at the other end who unlocks the token. This token is released by the original signalman and given to the train crew. There is supposed to be a stockpile of tokens in the machine (hence the different ‘lines’) so multiple trains could be sent in one direction one after the other. When the train arrived out of the single line the token would be put into the machine at the other end, this would unlock the system and allow another to be taken out as only one can be out at a time.

The red instrument in question is a "Tyre Key Token" block instrument of the late 1800s and it superceded the "Tyre No.6 Tablet" block instrument. It can hold many key tokens and they are electrically released by the signaller at the other end (usually on another identical instrument) when the plunger is depressed and the key turned through 180° in the notch at the top.
On the right hand side there is a release system, which allows a signalling inspector to remove tokens from the instrument without asking permission (for each one) from the other signaller. This is normally done when there is an imbalance of train workings (eg: 3 Up trains and 1 Down train) and the tokens all end up in 1 instrument.
It's a robust design and many are used on heritage railway today. Even the NYMR have theirs (key and no.6 instruments) connected by WiFi!

  • @RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS

2:39 I believe that's a line token machine, which would be in a signal box. For single line working, in some cases, a staff/token system would be used where the driver on a certain section of line would be given a token by the signalman, ensuring only one train was using the line at any given time, as the signalman wouldn't get the token back until the train with it came back through. Simple, but it keeps trains from having corn field/rainy castle meets.
Beautiful line, nice to see the that project tank loco is at least painted to keep the elements off, unfortunately it's hard for any heritage line to get all their stuff running, but it's good to see that they do care about that loco still.
I really like the look of that manor in BR black, though, and the Pullman car certainly is interesting - I rode something smaller on the Ffestinog. A heritage railway that goes to a beach sounds like a brilliant idea, really!

Hey there Sam. Did you know, at the national railway museum in York, they are rebuilding Sir Nigel Gresely. At I went to the North Yorkshire mores railway and my parents said they had a surprise for me at the railway. When we got there we met an employee nicknamed Piglet and he took me on a behind the scenes look at the engine sheds and engine works. I talked to him none stop about trains for nearly an hour. When we got on the train it was pulled by a southern railway school class named Repton, which was the first engine that piglet drove and worked on. You should've Deen my face. There were 6MT's, 4F's, I was as happy as a crown in a cornfield.

I was at the Dartmouth railway a couple weeks ago! I love Dartmouth. Its a beautiful place with loads of character, and a steam railway. What's not to like? The models in the visitor centre are pretty cool. Managed to get a ticket for the observation car, took a hyperlapse video through the central window. Did kinda want to do the round robin, but I decided to spend a day in paignton instead. There's actually a nice model shop there - just a few buildings away from the station. Almost bought them out of oxford rail rolling stock. Also spent a bit of time just siting on the platform in the evening. Watching the trains and the boats going by as the sun slowly sets is really something. If the budget permits another visit, I'll do the round robin perhaps.

They do run theyr diesels every now and then. But I think they mainly use them when the Torbay Express comes from the mainline. That train is normaly about 8 or 9 coaches long and therefor too heavy for one express engine to pull over the steep gradiants of the DSR. So the DSR usually put's one of it's diesel's at the back of those trains.

Oooh sam! My grandad has told me many stories of that railway when he worked there in the 70s. The sidings next to goodrington station are commonly known as happy valley sidings, my grandad was a shunter and he said a class 47 would come in with 10-12 coaches and he would push them into place ready either for a return trip or to standby for a while. He also worked on the preserved line when it was still very active with the mainline and he was driving Lydham manor he left it coupled to a London train and left the station at the back of a train! 😂Not sure if you are on about the SDR when you say you visited another railway in that location and that is where he works now and has done since 1969 when it went to Ashburton before it was buried under dual carriageway. He is a great poser for pics and videos so you most probably caught him if he was there. Great vid, should of popped by for a cuppa as I only live about a 1 away from Paignton station😂They are only a couple of stories that I have told you!

They were first introduced in the LMS, near Crewe, and very few have been preserved.

That machine you saw inside the carriage at the beginning is called a Single Line Token Machine. I know this because I've been invited up into Bridgnorth Signal Box on the SVR, and Llangollen Signal Box on the Llangollen Railway. All preserved manual Signal Boxes have these token machines. The Single Line Token System is used on all preserved railways that have single track, and passing loops at stations, to prevent a head-on collision with another train halfway. So, let's imagine you've been invited up into Bridgnorth Signal Box, courtesy of the friendly Signalman. You notice him use what we call a bell code to talk to the Signalman at Hampton Loade Station. Four beats on the bell from HL Signalman means "Are you there?" B Signalman replies "Yes, I'm here." Next may come four rings pause, meaning to B Signalman "Can you accept a passenger train that's due to pass through my section?" If both tracks are clear at Bridgnorth, B Signalman will answer to accept the train due to come in. He can then release the token to place in its hoop pouch, and get ready for the train's arrival, having set the points and his signals to line clear. Hope that's useful.

    Hiya Sam :0
@ 2:37 - That "this thing" as you called it - sorry can't remember what it is called but was very important back in the day - that silver bit sticking out is actually a key - the whole unit is a safty device to stop Loco's from crashing into each other along single stretches of track - it would be connected (I think) to the points - it (the key) would be handed to the driver by the say the Station master on a big metal ring whilst the Loco would move slowly passed. It would be placed in the slot & turned to let the next station along the line that there is a Loco coming along the line & it would make the round silver bell next to it ring about 3 times - The Train could not pass the station until it had been used!!!
@ 8:13 - I have a Blue Plymouth Switcher which is my B.R. blue LIMA model - but mine does not have any connecting rods like the real 1 in your video - mine is just a 0-4-0 & the 1 in your vid looks like a 0-6-0!!!
