- This is a tutorial on how to stop on a longboard FOR BEGINNERS. For me, theres 4 different ways to stop. i explain throughly how to do each of these ways to stop. These are for beginners snd i REALLY hope it helps anyone one who wants to learn how to longboard. Remember to practice alot and stay safe. IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES THAT ARE CAUSED FROM THIS VIDEO TUTORIAL. I DO NOT OWN THE SONG THAT IS PLAYED IN THE BACKGROUND. ALL RIGHTS GO TO THEIR RESPECTFUL OWNERS. Song Name: Face to face (cosmo Vitelli Remix)
I tried to stop today going downhill at about 15 mph, Stepped off my board by pure instinct and rolled the shit out of my right ankle.
Same thing happened to me except I jumped off and tumbled down the hill
Just use your foot drag it on the ground

Roberto Jimenez i tried but like i just fell off

Excellent video for a beginner going slow. That would be me. Just bought my first long board at age 68. And yes I can probably guess what you are thinking. :)
bought my first at 33. Any age is a good age to try something new and have fun.
kthejung ok great so im not having a midlife crisis!!! I just bought my first longboard at age 35 and im learning pretty quick. Cheers!!!! to you both😊
Chiming in @ 52 yo, i also ride a fixie ;*)
It's been two years since your post. Are you still riding? I'm 75 and started last year and I'm learning. I've banged myself up on a couple of falls, just bruised pretty good. It was the unexpected fast stop, when you catch the wheel on a push or going to fast and not stopping very well. Those are what got me. Stopping is hard for me, so I need practice, that's what it takes to do anything well. I've been Snowboarding for the last 10 years, that's why I was interested in Longboarding. It is something to do when I don't have snow.
I just bought mine at 34 on a whim and I rode it over 70 miles in the first 3 weeks, carefully. So fun, but somewhat perilous. :) People do look at me weird sometimes, because I wear a helmet and long sleeves and pants and because I am always adjusting my balance like a noob but a lot of folks compliment my board.
Just got a long board today !!! Love it !!! Im 48 and surfing on land .. Great Video !!
Luvaan Rooyan omgggggg
nice vid, but the first one will only work at VERY slow speeds. jumping off the board at high speeds causes wipeouts.
Hahaha yea I almost broke my arm and ribs cuz i was going to fast and stopped like this
I learned that the harrdway a week after I got my board lol thought I broke my elbow luckily it was just bruised really bad
I will make another video mentioning this. Im sorry about all those that have been injured. Again im not responsible. This has been a way i used to stop and never fell before.
yes,that is just true!
You again!?!
Im planning on Re-shooting this video with a better camera and editing. Im sorry to all those who have hurt themselves from my "jumping off" technique. I shoukd have mentioned that you should NOT use that way to stop if you are going over 15mph. Sorry again and im glad that this has helped many out there. I will make more videos. Maybe tutorials on how to make your own mini board?
Good tips but when foot braking you can't use that at any speed like you said, if you're going too fast that's when you need to learn how to slide
evoxl bae you won't be Going that fast on flat level streets lol
I didn't say you would be
My friend jumped off and got hurt bad.
+evoxl bae Your right, but remember this is a beginner tutorial. Most beginners jump and run before they hit 15 mph. Sliding is a pretty advanced technique. I swear theres a natural fear that automatically kicks in when your approaching your top running speed.
Thank you so much! I am returning to skating after a 35 year break. Things have changed! Stopping was a mystery to me on my new Bustin' Nomad. Thank you to you I know I can do this without killing myself! PS- 55 year old woman am I--never stop doing what you love.
So many high production videos teaching this on youtube are useless. This one is concise and straight to the point. Well done.
Thanks a lot. Just got my first longboard yesterday and it's been like 20 years since i got on a skateboard so this will help. Now I have to practice my balance.
Thanks a lot. it helps. i am 60 yrs old, just started to longboard. 3rd hr already. thanks.
39 yrs old w brand new drop deck longboard. Gonna practice these moves tomorrow morning. Thanks man.
Wish I had watched this before I went too fast down a hill and fell! Thanks for posting.
Great dude this is what i've been looking for! Just getting back on the board after a few years when i wiped out while speed wobbling during my second week learning.
Now at 45 i ain't giving up... the comment form the guy learning at 60 also gave me a boost!!
Good video! Most how to stop videos seem to be made by people who don't remember the details they had to learn to get it right, because they have been boarding for so long. This broke it down a lot better.
This is the best video showing how to stop for a newbie. Thank you
My mind is blown, this is so simple and effective. I only just bought a second hand longboard today and already had to run after it for quite a while :D
Don't do the first one. I did this, and broke my arm.
This is meant for slow speeds under 10 km/h (apx. 8.5 mph) If you're not extremely ready, and expecting the change from standing still to a full out sprint. You should definitely not do this.
Tippo ya just yesterday i was going 20 - 30 down a hill and there was a cliff and theres no other way i know to stop so far so i had to jump off and i was going so fast i rolled and sprained my hand really bad :/ i learned that you ONLY do that stop at low speeds
I do it at maby 15-20 into grass you just slide and roll but I've almost broken my leg and sprained my wrist so I should probably stop
@@mirandaallaboutgranny901 i feel u lol - and i just got a eletric longboard..
be an athlete
I was going like 30 down a hill and I had a sore foot, had to jump off before I landed in the fence
I watched this video twice and then went out and practiced what he shows and improve my stopping by 100%. Putting your hand on your knee when you are stopping helps ensure is that you do not fly forward. There is another video out there where they teach you how to use the grass to stop and also how to take a fall which is very helpful too.
I skated during middle school and through high school and then stopped. Now 44 years old and got a longboard....damn fun...good times and the memories came back ! But slowing down make me nervous now. I almost crashed today going slightly down hill but I jumped off carefully. I need more practice!
This is a great video, anyone who was stupid enough to jump off while going fast, Darwin award my friends. As a beginner this video helps alot thanks and don't let the bozos get you down, keep making your vids.
well its just for regular stopping haha not for bombing hills
I once bombed down a long hill with my bros on a trail near Avila Beach up to probably 25-30 MPH on a cruiser... I managed to stop after burning through half my shoe by foot dragging and ended up about 10 feet from big chonk gravel. Pretty powerful action and it’s the only way I stop now.
Once you get good enough you can steer the board while foot dragging but it does take some muscle effort to do it!
Easy effective stops explained well, great job on the vid
I'm really uncoordinated and this video was super easy for me to understand. Also, it wasn't boring to watch. Really to the point and entertaining. Thanks!
This is the best instructional video I've seen so far. I'll try the hand on knee next time and see if that helps with balance. Thanks.
Thanks for the help! I've learned the foot break technique and the step break since the other day before I saw this video, I jumped off going about 15 and got mad road rash from a bail haha
Thanks, thankfully i learned this before the video, i guess i was born for it!
Like poisonrain said this helps for begginers. I'm not about to power slide and bust my brain. Also another begginer tip. Buy a padded protective shorts to wear inside. I personally did research and bought hillbilly bumsaver. Fell on my tailbone the other day and my board rolled across street traffic. But stood right up with no pain. I also bought wrist saver but didn't wear it that day and ended up with a wounded palm. Now I wear it evry protective gears cause I Wana get up for another day
This is the best explanation for stopping I have seen yet.
Great tips. Thank you!
Wow, awesome! I love that you included so many for me to try. And you're explanations and demonstrations were great! I'm definitely hoping you have more videos like this for me to check out. Thank you!
Yesterday was my first day skateboarding/long boarding ever. I wish I found this video when I felt confident to go down a hill then lose control not only to skin my face and knee.
Thanks! I should have probably checked this out before wiping out going down a hill at over 20 mph... Not the skateboard I grew up with...
Thanks so much for this dude. I've been looking up videos on how to stop and I'm fed up of watching pro's do crazy-ass moves to stop when I'm just starting and have got no hope. Made the mistake of watching this at work and couldn't stop laughing at that bit about your longboard rolling down the road...coz that totally happened to me yesterday haha. Seems like common sense to kick backwards, but only once you pointed it out. Thanks for that :)
Thank you! This was SO helpful.
This was really helpful, thank you!
Very helpful. Thanks.
Great video, very helpful also love the daft punk remix, I’m a huge fan!
Very helpful vid and great background song.
Very informational, Awesome techniques
Once you grt the hang of your longboard theirs a really good way to stop easily if you have sliding wheels, just kick your board to the right or left in a fast turning motion.
wish i watched this video before going down a huge hill on my first attempt on a longboard from a skate board and falling off scraping my elbow up and doing muscle damage to my right shoulder :). Really really nice video though. Hopefully i wont kill myself now
Nice!!! Good job on this video, Eric!!
I know this has been said a lot and acknowledged but jumping off is a good technique unless your going really fast, I know from experience that if you try to jump off while going really fast your foot is going to come out from under you and you will probably stack pretty bad. I grazed my hip and shoulder really bad and took a chunk out of my elbow. Also my elbow is bruised all over and there is a bruise going half way up my forearm, so just be careful 😂
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks some good tips
Great job, Thank you, Justanewbe.
Today I was riding down hill and was going way to fast. It was either I jump off and get bad road rash or get hit by by a car. I tryed to jump off and run with the board but as soon as I hit the ground I went flying and did a few rolls. I am really shredded up now and want to know how to slow myself down so if this happens agin. (I was going like 35mph and I have bad wheels so there was speed wobbles) please help me so I don't kill my self next time haha
Good video. I jumped off mine and twisted my knee pretty bad, which is why I came here to figure out, "what did I do wrong?" Guess I need more practice and a helmet lol
Nice vid - thanks. Safety first.
Great video!!!
great video thanks
if you're going slightly fast and you do the step off method then it needs to be a Sprint off. hit the ground running otherwise that is too much momentum coming to a dead stop and injuries abound. it's always a good idea to be ready to basically Sprint off the board at any given moment
When is the remake coming? Great Video!
Thank youuu!!!
Just slide stop. Not to be confused with more technical drift sliding or speed checking, the straight slide brake works and gets you comfortable with losing traction (its also pretty easy). Get over your fear of hitting asphalt or going faster and DO IT! use slide gloves so your hands don't get chewed up...slap them puppies on the ground and turn into them hard pushing your rear foot out (you'll end up in a pushup position). You will eat shit the first few times, but at 15-20mph (If you are a beginner that doesnt know how to stop, you shouldnt be going any faster anyhow lol) , it doesnt hurt if ya got your gear on. Learn to SLIDE ...and your newfound confidence will relax you as you carve down hills less worried about stopping RIGHT NOW. As you get comfortable with the motions of sliding to a stop, you can rely less on your hands for balance, and start sliding while crouched, then graduating to full postured speed checks.
it might not have high production value, but it's a great informative video. Thanks.
Good music! Good tips!
I just got home from boarding for the first time after a rain storm, once I got up to approx. 25kph I realized I needed to stop soon cause it was a sharp turn at the end of this steep hill, I've known the foot on the ground way but I was going to fast and the road was slippery so I didn't want to attempt it. I turned on to the sidewalk and grabbed a fence which managed to stop me right infront of a guy in his car who said "so close!".
Great Vid!
nice work, mate!
great thanks!
Can you also put your back foot on the wheel? I always thought cruising on the road wouldn't be to fast but it's scary fast, and I thought I could bomb hills, I can't even ride on the sidewalk.
I usually jump off once I hit the grass and run forward a bit
nice work
Wonderful. I'm starting to longboard home from school which is atop a hill and shoots right into fuckin traffic
Thanks bra
When the video started it felt like 1982 with Ralph Macchiato.
hey currently riding down a hill, don’t know how to stop. send help pls
Step brake is best but take multiple steps or else all force could injure your shin
Umm I do the second one and it hurts my leg badly. It feels like cramped and every time I do it it hurts where my leg and butt meet...
when I do the step brake I hurt my ankle its actually throbbing rn
Dont do hop off, if you go too fast you start running and fell.
So uhh am I the only one watching in 2020
"Slide brake"? It's called FOOTBRAKE ;-) And you don't have to be stiff, just keep most of the weight (at least initially) on the foot you have on the board, otherwise you'll spill in an ugly way. In fact I can't imagine any situation where you have to be stiff on a longboard, it's a recipe for disaster and injury. Same about riding onto grass, not only you have to compensate with putting weight back, but there can be all sorts of nasty things hidden under it (a little rock can make you "superman" easily). I know you're trying to help but for many it might be dangerous to try what you propose just like that. Learn to footbrake and, if you're hitting speeds beyond your running speed it's probably a good idea to also learn to slide and speedcheck.
bigoldnoob thanks for commenting... I keep disregarding the fact that I need to remake this video... It's been 5 years. I'm finishing up school soon, So I'll definitely make one during the summer.
lmao trying to do that foot brake but i just end up slamming my foot down and stopping suddenly i get panicked
imagine it like your skipping but still a majority of your weight still stays on the board.... I really need to remake this video xD
the reason i watched this is because i tried to jump off and start running but the board was going faster that i can run so only do that at slow speeds
I did the grass technique a couple years ago and the board came to a dead stop and I went flying. It was an emergency stop because the road I was on turned into a 90 degree turn. Ended up tearing my rotary cuff and dislocating my collar bone. Never do that one ☝️
i tried the stepping one while going down a hill and broke my collar bone
But what if your going down a big hill 30mph is it still safe?
+Random Spot haha nope you'd wanna powerslide
1:33 how break your ankle easily
Hehe do not try to jump off on high speed, I just crashed to asphalt.
Welp I'm not a beginner so I just ride with one foot for like two seconds then I step off like as if they were stairs
Foot braking is tricky
there be something I can stick to the bottom of my shoe? I ain't dragging my new jordans on the road
dont wear jordans. also watch the rest of the video, theres this step technique that doesnt aquire sliding.
norreko yeah I know
+Markulator sole protectors
+norreko or even require
Or just get vans or some shit:)
this may seem like some Early 2000's shit to you but this was in 2014
what if I'm driving downhill full speed
then look for a more advanced youtube tutorial. This is for beginners. hence the title of the video.
Carving and sliding. Mainly sliding
i did this and i almost died
For the 2nd one i did it wrong and fell lol
Jumping off seems to work for me. I like the foot brake method but it wears down my shoes all to hell. They should make some kind of special skating shoes that are made of car brake stuff or something.
Also if you hurt yourself jumping off from high speeds then you aren't doing it right. Become a little experienced in parkour basics and you should be safe from then on.
If all else fails, run into a pole. You'll look stupid but it's better than getting seriously injured or run over by a car. ALSO if you do the pole method: make sure you have bend in your arms, you don't want your bones coming through your skin. Just bend your arms and prepare your muscles.
If you are going fast, ride head on into a pole. Got it! Excited since I just got a board today :D
get a boolahboard - it has a foot brake.
this works until you start going at a decent pace
then its hurts like a b***
SnixaBarVlogs learn how to safety roll. Your next problem becomes not destroying your board
this music tho
It felt appropriate at the time haha I love this song!
Please don't slide break, unless you can afford new shoes.
Edmund Ala Lol, my shoes aren't too expensive, and it seems like a really good way of breaking, so I'm probably going to be doing that.
Truee. I slide all the time, but not at high speeds or downhill. Let's just say I've had a few crocs because of sliding lol
Edmund Ala Lol, well now I just use my longboard to get across campus. I used to downhill, but one day I fell of and fractured my skull and was bed ridden for over a month. I haven't gone downhill since. On campus, I don't get a whole lot of speed, as the campus is completely flat, so I don't really have to worry.
Brian P Kuhn I dig it. I'm just boarding from home to work. There's one big hill, but I don't speed down it anymore. I ended up speed wobbling and my board flew out from under me (when I was trying to slide), and I flipped into the street lol good thing there wasn't any cars. Do you get any feet ache when you board? I've been boarding for about a month or two, and I still have that damn ache.
Edmund Ala Eh, sometimes my ankles will hurt after a while. I was just going to walk on campus, but I think I tore something when walking 6 miles a day! I decided to break out my board again and use it to get around my 1,489 acre campus. My legs can get a little tired, and it's a little harder to ride when you have a 20 pound backpack on your back, I might need to tighten my trucks up a bit, but other than that, it's a million times better than walking.
To people who is going fast downhill: You need to learn how to drift and wear proper gloves.
hes a holigram
dude jumping like that is so dangerous. You should take this video down before more people get hurt
first
do not do the hop off
These are crap, thinking about it "do this at slow speed" the whole point in learning to stop is becauses its to fast, try doing the footbreak at 10mph?
Bruh
