Each iwi have their own kawa that dictate how the ceremonial process is conducted, but there isn’t any pre-colonial-evidence that suggest women were not allowed to speak on the Taumata/Paepae, and that there wasn’t any type of inequality between the two genders , it was in fact the opposite and there’s more than enough evidence supporting this . There were female Chiefs with the highest honour within Iwi that went to sign for Te Tiriti, but was denied the right to sign by the Colonials, and so many iwi did not sign because of that rule. Also if you look now at which iwi still practise that type of tikanga (women having a less say / being in the kitchen and doing jobs in the background) you’ll find it is the iwi that are still heavily influenced by the church, e.g Ratana Pā or some marae down the east coast where Christ was brought a little later than the north.

There are some beautiful elements of Maori culture which NZ institutions like AirNZ used to do a great job of elevating and highlighting to the world. Today, there’s seemingly a desire to focus on the violent, intimidating and resentful parts of the culture and it’s embarrassing.

Not sniveling about injustices, real or imagined, from times past, personal mental health issues, current personal problems and "all that". I really want to get into politics now. My main ancestors are Scottish. So im really looking forward to playing the bagpipes begore my maiden speech and then lifting my kilt and baring my buttocks at my political opposition. Maori are great artists and craftsmen also.
Most of all get back to traditional eating which would work wonders on their health outcomes.
