    Great video Toid and good job comparing the two screens. I don't have a projection yet but if I do I will be looking at this as an option

    Yeah it's a big difference on your setup, it looks great.
    The lazer speckle I get from the n1 ultra on any screen other than white makes it so distracting and I can't use an ambient light screen due to that, but I find the mega contrast ratio that projector has of 1600:1 doesn't seem to wash out on the white like I expected, it's actually a brilliant picture on the white screen. Before that I used a gray screen with an xgimi projector and honestly, the n1 on the white actually gives better blacks than the xgimi on a gray, it was unexpected.

      That’s crazy that you can’t use any other screen with the JMGO. I knew they were playing with laser speckle, but I didn’t realize it was that bad. But I am definitely glad you found a solution that worked well for you.

      @@Toid yeah I tried the gray blackout cloth first and it was unwatchable on bright areas like sky and clouds etc, so I covered the blackout cloth in white spandex and instantly had a picture that resembled a tv in a dark room with hardly any speckle, but surprisingly, even with all the curtains open in daylight it's very watchable, even the blacks still look black, the 4000 ansi lumens are probably to thank for that.
      Great seeing another video from you though, great info as always 👍

      I just purchased the N1 Ultra and heavily researching screens I can portably use indoors and out.
      I’m leaning towards Vividstorm floor rising screens, despite the awkward length and weight when closed, I believe it’s still better than setting up and breaking down typical portable screens. Time is precious.
      Vividstorm assured me their UST ALR does not have speckle issue. I can’t completely trust that. While I don’t intend on watching outdoors in daylight, I worry even dusk ambient light would wash out on white screen.
      Also, projector can’t always be centered. Vividstorm assured me their ALR can accept off center projection. That’s hard to believe too.
      Your comment is the first to say white didn’t wash out as you’d expected, giving me hope that white may be a better option for my use case.
      I’m checking whether u noticed speckle problem on Vividstorm ALR screens?
      Thank you for any insight!

    What were the contrast measurements between the two screens?
    I don't doubt that ANSI contrast can be improved by these types of screens (especially with any light painted walls/carpet or other reflection surfaces) but on/off will generally remain the same.
    The problem I have with these screens is the hotspotting and general lack of uniformity across the screen. In the sweet spot they can look very good compared to a lighter screen especially in less than ideal conditions. In a very well treated room (mostly black surfaces, draped in velvet, etc) the difference would be akin to adding an ND filter in front of the projector lens as you lose about 40% of light compared to a high quality 1.0 gain lambertian white screen (but this may not apply to UST's, ALR screens are generally a better for for UST's).
    An example in my blacked out theater I measure about 600:1 ANSI at the lens (maximum of the projector) and 400:1 at the (white) screen. In a typical living room environment a white screen would be more in 60:1 ANSI contrast range.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  Před 7 měsíci

      The reason the contrast is better on the screen like this is due to the fact that it cuts down on reflections. Even in a darkened room, you’re still going to have a lot of reflections because of the way in ultra short throw projector project see image. Since it’s projecting it straight up, you’re going to have a lot of ceiling and wall bounce that are going to come right back onto the screen and wash out the image. When you do a CLR screen you cut down on those reflections and that lights redirected to the viewer. My room is especially worse since it’s an A-frame. The lights really bounce off the sidewalls even though they’re darkened and it reflects right back onto the screen. Same with the ceiling. If you were in a really tall room with no sidewalls, it may not make much of a difference.

    What is your everyday projector? From your horizon ultra review you made it sound like you’re using that but I’m guessing you’re not? Where would you rank the horizon ultra?

    • @Toid
      @Toid  Před 7 měsíci

      That is a great question. At the time of the review, the horizon ultra was my every day projector. But I recently just got this Ultimea Thor T60 ultra short, throw projector in. And it blows the xgimi away. Of course, it is a significant price difference as well. So it really should. I’m thinking about redoing the theater room in a way that works for reviewing both ultra short throw and regular projectors. So removing the acoustically transparent screen and putting a permanent screen on the wall with the ultra short, throw being able to electrically rise in front of it

      @@ryaneckel5601 I love the Xgimi. I plan to use it as an outdoor projector for the time being. It is really bright and vibrant. The one area where it struggles is darker scenes. So if you watch a lot of darker scene HDR content, then it may not be the one that you want to personally purchase.

      @@Toid I’m guessing even with an alr screen it wouldn’t help that?

    • @Toid
      @Toid  Před 7 měsíci

      @@ryaneckel5601 That's a good question. In general, a screen can greatly impact the contrast of a projector. For example the Black Diamond is one of the best screens I have ever seen and it makes any projector really shine. But it also costs 5-6k! Way out of the reach for most people. I'm sure it would help to have a grey ALR screen, but how much, I couldn't say. With the UST it was about a 30% difference in contrast off the screen. That did make a big difference with this projector. It's not really designed for the Xgimi, but I would expect just the material itself would have an impact. Maybe, I'll try it out sometime.

    I have a UST projector (Formovie Theater). But I don't think there is an ALR screen that is also acoustically transparent, which means speakers behind the screen will be... muffled? What's your experience with that?

    • @Toid
      @Toid  Před 7 měsíci

      There are no AT screens designed specifically for an UST. However the screen in the video offers this same screen with the bottom black area acoustically transparent. The screen itself isn’t acoustically transparent but at least you can still have your center channel below the screen. Just follow the links in the description and you’ll see one called the Vividstorm S Pro P. That’s the one you’d want.

    it feels a little bit superfluous to compare the white to an ALR in a lit environment at this stage. It feels more valuable seeing how much of a drawback there actually is in the dark. The lack of performance of a white in light has been way overrepresented (especially on CZcams).
    I am really finding it hard to see talk, evidence and reason to go with light control + a white screen. Way too many companies, sponsorships and DIYers steering discussion quickly to ALR/grey. Deep blacks is great, but stark whites should be considered too.
