I just got the black one and I absolutely love it. I think it's actually the better built anbernic device bellow $100 for sure. I have the 35xx H and SP and other devices from other brands. This one almost does not have rattle, all buttons feel absolutely perfect including the triggers, they feel clicky enough but also dampened enough, the whole device feels extremely solid and very well built, dense, all edges are perfectly rounded and well finished, joysticks feel well mounted and solid, buttons are top anbernic quality, they feel perfect, even the menu and start/select buttons are very well dampened and premium feeling. The screen is extremely bright with amazing colors (the 3.5 screens are washed out in comparison) and those rounded screen edges make it look extremely premium. I am absolutely amazed with this device. I have dozens of devices (I have a problem... but don't we all?). This is the BEST anbernic I have ever touched bellow $100. Probably even the best device for the price. For some reason, it feels extremely premium and 2x its price. I hope the future anbernic devices all have at minimum this level of quality. It's also extremely comfortable to use. If you like big beautiful bright screens, comfort, great buttons and horizontal style for cheap... this is the one to get. This literally made the 35xx H obsolete. It's just a little bit bigger but much better in almost every way and its almost the same price, especially if you find it with a discount.
This is my favorite of the H700 chip devices. I already have a 405M with the same screen so I won’t be getting this one but once you play on a 4-inch, 4:3 screen it’s hard to go back to 3.5 inches. That half an inch makes such a big difference. The only thing I don’t like is the RGB lighting. It just waste battery and is a distraction. I wish they would stop putting it on the handhelds. When you turn the LEDs off, you have this ugly white ring around the sticks and I don’t like that look.
The arc was a missed opportunity to make the ultimate Sega machine. A better chipset and 1 analog stick would have allowed it to emulate all sega consoles.
I'll admit I'm very tempted to get this. The DMG Gameboy one just looks really good to me. Only 2 things are stopping me: 1. After owning a few devices, I've learned that I prefer Android ones. They're a little more work to set up, but I feel like I have more control over the device. I really enjoy making wallpapers for them and with Android I can just drag and drop the files onto it. 2. I already have an AYN Odin as my main handheld along with a Retroid Pocket Flip, RGB30, RG35XX Plus, Retroid Pocket 2S and an RG405V, so I don't want to end up with a bunch of handhelds that I never use. I wish Retroid would redo the 2S and try to keep it similar in size but with a 4-inch screen. All that said, if I was just getting started with this hobby, I would definitely grab the RG40XX-H as my first one.
I've been looking for the best 3:2 device to dedicate to gba and wss hoping this one would be it. At the end i just splurged on a RG552 in 2024. Hope it works out!
Oh sorry I saw 556. 552 ks a good retro system but only if you can get it for a good price. There are some missing features too. Like I recall it had no wifi.
@RavensToRoses yeah... maybe it's his office address rather than his home, so he doesn't mind so much? Either way tho, doesn't seem like the kind of thing he'd want out there. Every other CZcamsr always blocks their address when showing packages.
TrimUI controls are terrible compared to Anbernic devices. As for many of the other comparable devices discussed, the extra half inch doesn't sound like much here, but, it makes a world of difference to aging folks who may find it difficult to read on all of these 3.5 inch models.
Agree with Adin. When I first took the TrimUI out of the package, I thought I was going to hate the tiny controls but in practice they’re quite good. The sticks aren’t great but at least they’re novel.
I swear I saw the SP on sale for $48 this week. That really is an amazing device. The Bluetooth on linux alone beats out Android from my experience. I wonder if the RGB lights will work with custom firmware on the 40xx. I guess we'll see the longer it's out 😊
Hey guys, if you are big on purchasing carrying cases for your handhelds. You may want to check out a seller on Etsy, OzLaboratory3D. They have the best carrying cases with magnetic closure. For now you would have to purchase the RG405M carrying case for your RG40XXH. I plan to put back some money and purchase a case for most my handhelds from that OzLaboratory3D store on Etsy.
Good review and i totally mirror your sentiments in regards to this being Ok but not impressive. Would love to see what the custom firmware experience on this is. Personally i would rather opt for a trimui smart pro if i could.
@@adinwalls Awesome, will definitely watch that. Working on one myself comparing these 2 aswell. It is just research based so please don't think im stealing your idea. Would love to be able to do hands on reviews just can't afford these at the moment. Think your reviews are awesome and learned a lot from this one
The 40 is hands-down the best H700 device (coming from someone who also owns the + and SP). It is the comfiest, has stacked trigger buttons that are less clicky than its predecessors, and the screen upgrade is significant. All for only a few $ more than its older siblings- heck yes. The D-pad feels identical to the +, and I don’t remember the false diagonals being such a big issue for that device in reviews. 🤔 It’s a shame to me that the reception in the community and YT to this one is so lukewarm. It’s basically a less powerful 405m with a top D-pad for a third of the price, and that was a much praised device last year.
I hear you on this but there are just so many devices that do the same thing and some of them do it better. But like I said, for anyone who's a fan of 4:3 this is going to be a top pick.
If you have not you MUST try the modified stock ROM that has some simple themes and REALLY good deep sleep on all the H700 devices, only downside is it will sleep but not wake the SP when opened.
As we speak, I am copying complete series TV shows to my 40XXH on a 1.5TB micro sd card. Love the Video Player on the ANBERNIC Linux stock firmware of the 40XXH.
@@adinwalls Strange situation. I am somehow able to install two 1TB micro sd cards in both my 28XX and 35XXSP. Though, I'm not able to install two 1TB micro sd cards in my 40XX. I am able to install a 1.5TB in the roms port side but not the firmware port side of my 40XX. So, I'm just leaving the stock firmware sd card in my 40XX and using a 1.5TB for the roms slot.
@@adinwalls Just weird how the 28XX and 35XX supports a 1TB micro sd in both slots. While the 40XX only supports a 1TB in the roms slot. Thing is, I'd much rather the two 1TB micro sd card setup work in the 40XX over the other two devices because the 40XX has a larger display and stereo speakers for playing my video files. It's okay though. I am using a 1.5TB micro sd on the roms side of my 40XX and that's still a great deal of space. I'll just have to be more selective with the shows I load up. Got some Star Trek Shows, Batman and Spiderman cartoons, X-Men cartoons, sitcoms such as Fresh Prince Of bel-Air, Sanford & Son, The Cosby Show and etc. I got some classic Power Ranger Shows as well. The stock firmware card, I was able to fit all of my movies and roms library unto. Switched out some stock roms and replaced with my own.
I feel like reviewers watch other videos and basically just talk about the same points . Every video I have seen the mention this device being a “finger print magnet “
I try not to watch other creators too much. I hadn't watched any other reviewers for this video. It was my first look at the device. So if another reviewer said it's a finger print magnet... Maybe it is!

Really enjoying your videos, man! Heard a fellow South African accent, plus channel and vids all about things I love. Easy sub. I've been doing retro emulation on my old PSP for around 10 years now, and last week decided it was time to get an RG35XX Plus, It was meant to a "dedicated console for emulation", one and done, but I quickly realised it's just my "first" emulation station. lol.
Might want to review that opening section again, Adin. Your address is pretty clear on the package :(
Yup, found it!
Thanks I added a makeshift blur to hide it
@@AlexPrevost Yeah it's still visible.
Still enough information available even after the second round of blurring. I get the impression Adin is not too concerned about this.

It'd be nice to have the 40xxh instead of my 35xxh, but it doesn't seem like a big enough upgrade to actually buy one.
definitely not
The 35xxh has the battery close to the SoC, causing the heat from the SoC to dissipate into the battery. It's a very strange internal design.
