These two devices inspired an accidentally great summary of the retro game industry when Wulff Den compared them. "This one feels bad, and this one runs bad, and why is custom firmware still necessary?" I'm looking forward to the day when someone finally makes a device with no major flaws.

Maybe next version will resolve these faults, but given what you've shown today, both are compromised and neither are a buy. Might as well use existing devices and wait. Thank you for this excellent review which has stopped me buying yet another retro handheld with compromises and disappointment

Hey man, I hoped that WOULDN’T be the takeaway from this video. For the price I think both of these are great, but as you said there are other devices: some commenters made great recommendations such as the RG280V, RG280M, RG300X. These are all still wonderful devices and play all the old systems. For me, design-wise the Miyoo A30 is a good option.

Having both for a while, I was in the minority for a long time calling out the Miyoo as the better of the 2. The rattle of the 28xx can't be dampened no matter what mod you perform, and it's an absolute deal breaker for something you want to carry around in your pocket. The feel of the 28xx is also hard in the hand in comparison, not sure why, maybe the plastic used, but it doesn't feel good for extended sessions. Glad the community is finally coming around to what I've been preaching.

The RG28XX is such a nice device. It doesn’t pip my Miyoo Mini+ for my top spot, but it’s a Retro Dream, been playing Advance Wars II and it looks real nice. All the 8Bit & 16Bit stuff plays well, I’m using Knulli as an OS, but the stock OS is OK, it really is. I’m very happy with the screen brightness, and there is no bleed at low levels. I’ve adopted a glasses case as it’s sleeping bag :) one of the ones with the snap closure and it works well.
The sound isn’t great, and it rattles, but for the price it’s almost unbeatable.

Spruce OS was a complete gamechanger for the A30 and it is good that it still has a lower reputation because now you can buy it for 35 bucks or so. For such a great micro handheld, it really is the best deal right now. We might get Onion on the A30 eventually too.
Micro: OG MM with Onion/A30 with Spruce
Pocketable size: Anbernic 35XX-H/SP to use as a portable Pi.

Mini devices won me over. I thought I'd be bothered with small screens, but no! A well designed mini device makes the screen feel good. I'm even playing it at home, which was not my initial intention.
The A30 is my current favorite device. It's well designed, which makes it disappear when you're playing, so that you can focus on your retro game.
It's also comfortable for the size, the build quality is good, and the controls are great. A bit of false diagonals, it's true, but I can roll the d-pad and play games with a lot of precision. I guess I got used to it.
I'm actually beating my own arcade records with it in games like Metal Slug 1 and Blazing Star.
I disagree about the shoulder buttons. I love them! It's a breath of fresh air seeing silent shoulder buttons on such a cheap device. Overall we should avoid using shoulder buttons on mini devices because they're not comfortable to use no matter how well designed the device is.

Glad the A30 got the screen brightness fixed. I've always despised Anbernic's firm, hard to press controls (Miyoo Flip soon please 🥲) and the buttons seem so small so I went with the A30. Really excited to try it out with Spruce. The dev seems super active on it as of now cause they already made a 1.1.5 version yesterday. Really love that white / purple colored 28XX though, love that design :) Stellar comparison, thanks Adin ✌

@@adinwalls Oh by the way just a small question. When did you buy your A30 ? I saw RGC's vid yesterday and he mentionned his new A30 that arrived didn't have that sensitive / loose D-Pad issue so maybe they made a silent revision after seeing the complaints or their manufacturing is inconsistent 😅🤣 Like my RG35XXSP came with tiny damping pads on a few controls while they're non-existent for other people so yeah. I mean for 30$ for such a tiny emulator powerhouse it's still amazing. And will you also cover the Powkiddy V10 ? Cheers :))
