The tune to the American national anthem is actually written by an Englishman in London (John Stafford Smith). It's real name is the anacreontic song. The original words (by Ralph Tomlinson) are about drinking - wine, women and song - the 'myrtle of Venus' and 'Bacchus's vine'. It was the theme song for the Anacreontic Society, which was a Gentlemen's club for amateur musicians.

Heard it so many times when I was in the States I am now have to turn down the volume or switch off the TV when I watched the Olympics. Our British National anthem is brilliant because you don't hear it very often. You only hear it At the FA cup final, England international sporting events, when Her Majesty the Queen appears at an event or function, her birthdays, Remembrance Day on TV and that's it. In America you play your national anthem at anything, I wonder if someone goes to the bog to have a dump, if the toilet plays your national anthem when you flush the toilet. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

It was “invented” on the spur of the moment when Bonny Prince Charley was invading England trying to replace the Hanoverian King George the Second with a return to the Stuart dynasty.
The point was to save the existing King from a usurper. Hence the emphasis on saving the King not the nation. The tune was borrowed from a well-known European song.
It’s a pity really. It’s not a proper “national” anthem.
