The hundred year war actually lasted 116 years, nothing better than beating the French, done it so many times in the end it got boring and then they expected us to help them out in World War I and two, which is what we did where they grateful of course not?

The marines are not ground troops.
They are water soldiers!
There primary job is to secure naval bases and assist with naval operations, like beach assaults. 😉

Marines as in the original sea soldiers not the modern term, Al using history as the focal point.
Marines are by nature naval infantry..
Germans will join in with jokes about WW2 these days. At a convention, a German friend sat in my pal's chair while he was at the bar. When my pal came back he said "Hey, what do you think that is, Poland?" The German lad laughed. What else is there to do? Get offended? It was a Laurel and Hardy convention, and on the opening night each 'tent' had to come on the stage as part of the Tent Parade. The Germans were so obliging as to come on goose-stepping - men women and kids. Again, what do you do? Laugh or be offended? Great memories. WW2 had nothing to do with them, nor us. We were friends.
The British equivalent of navy seals I guess would be the SBS and delta force would be the SAS although that could be wrong of course.
