I'm approaching 65 now, and when younger would laugh at jokes about older people. I say keep it up. It happens to all of us - hopefully! I still love to hear them. What am I supposed to do about becoming older? Cry? No, I'd rather laugh. As long as it's comedic and not nasty. Anyway, I'm going for my afternoon nap now.

There seem too be far more food allergies in the US than there is in the rest of the world. In fact some US CZcamsrs who've moved abroad have discovered that the problem or problems they had suddenly disappear. Also a lot of them report a weight loss, despite not changing their diet, with things being reversed when they go home to visit.

US food standards are piss poor. Utterly abysmal.

    • @danielmcilwaine720
      @danielmcilwaine720 Před 10 měsíci +2

@KingBoomer This isn't necessarily true. The US certainly uses more chemicals in their food, and it tends to be more highly processed, but this likely isn't the whole story. It is likely that the allergic person in these instances is not allergic to the food overall but instead a common ingredient in one country but not another or yet still both countries use a very similar recipe but the available constituent ingredients differ elsewhere even if the listed ingredients are otherwise identical. There will be people who emigrate from Africa/Asia who experience this in reverse. Generally speaking, allergies involve proteins. It doesn't matter what chemicals they add if it isnt a protein allergy is unlikely. This is why 90% of allergies are either peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish or fish.
It is commonly said that the West has more allergies than Asia or Africa, but this could be due to better medical care. There are more doctors and hospitals and so more diagnoses. Many allergies (and especially insensitivities) are not life threatening, and so medical care in traditionally poorer nations aren't so concerned with them because limited resources mean only more life-threatening/limiting disorders are cared about. Further, there may also be a survivorship bias. You are much more likely to survive a deadly allergy in a country with better medical care, leading to more people with the condition so you meet more people with a condition.
With the peanut allergy, it has been commonly held wisdom to avoid giving children under the age of 5 peanuts to avoid the choking hazard. It is believed that this non-exposure has led to more allergies.

Hey King and Queen B..! FYI - the theatre used for the 'Live at the Apollo...' shows is the Hammersmith Apollo in London (currently known as the Eventim Apollo (sponsorship!), previously it was a cinema (Hammersmith Odeon) and dates from 1932 - it's a wonderful Art Deco building, and still has the original (restored) Compton pipe organ, the console of which can rise up out of the floor - used to accompany the old silent films of the 30's, now used for concerts..! Earlier this year went there to see Pentatonix as part of their world tour! Many of the London theatres are from Edwardian or Victorian times, with the oldest being the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane - which first opened in 1663, although the current building dates from 1810..! 😊

"Halal" is an Arabic word (I believe) used in the Muslim faith to mean "allowed" (or acceptable). It is normally used in food and drink, especially meat which has to be slaughtered a certain way (again, as far as I understand it). The opposite of Halal and a word you'll hear far more often is "Haram" which means forbidden. That is basically it in a nutshell.
For the record, there is no alcohol that is Halal.

There is a problem with gluten nowadays, that there was not in the past. Bread is mass produced at speed to get as much of it on the supermarket shelves as quick as they can. When yeast is added, the dough is only left to rise for a couple of hours. Certain enzymes in the yeast get rid of the gluten, but the dough needs much longer to "prove" for the enzymes to do their work. 24 hours was the traditional way I have heard. I could be wrong.

Also, from what I've read, the varieties of wheat used on a mass scale today are those cultivated to produce a higher yield but are not particularly suited for human digestion (I'm not talking about gm product which are in a different category). While some people have a strong digestive tract and remain unaffected, others do not. Unless you have coeliac disease or an allergy, for most individuals a small amount of modern wheat probably wouldn't do much harm. However, we rely heavily on wheat in the west (not as much in the East where rice tends to be more of a staple) and it can be found in practically everything. It can be very difficult to avoid which is why gluten free products have become so popular.

Generally speaking, the first exposure to an allergen does not result in an "allergic reaction." It is the 2nd, 3rd, or sometimes even more subsequent exposures that cause the typical reaction. You need the first exposure to create sensitisation (unrelated to sensitivity), which creates the allergic antibodies and then a subsequent exposure to trigger a response.
A non-immune reaction is called a sensitivity or intolerance. There is no such thing as a lactose (a very common insensitivity) or gluten allergy although gluten insensitivity certainly exists. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition, and lactose intolerance is a lack of lactase in the gut, although there are certainly milk protein allergies.

People are perhaps half right with the gluten avoidance idea.
Industrial production of bread for example now focuses on concentrating gluten content to create a more gloopy dough that needs a very short proof time.
Hence the yeast and other content isn’t allowed to undergo it’s typical process time and to break down gluten and wheat proteins compared the the older methods of production.
While I’m not gluten intolerant if I stuff down a mass production white bread roll or similar stodgy item compared to some properly baked or home made bread, sourdough etc I end up feeling lethargic and out of sorts, like I’m trying to digest a football. I’m sure that can’t be a good thing.

Celiacs go into anilfilactic shock and can die. But there is gluten intolerance too. It’s also a real thing that leads to vomiting and the squirts until dangerously dehydrated.

Yep. I'm a chef in Australia. The amount of times the 'Free the glutens' made mention of gluten intolerance then "I will just have a bowl of Beer Battered Fries" I became intolerant to the glutens pretty damn quick🤣

It's not an attitude, it's a bad physical reaction that you don't have, clearly. Why be smug about it?

@@Bryt25 Crohn's desese will kill you. Celiacs makes you fart at brunch. .. We know this because it only became an issue when it was mentioned on MasterChef 2005. Chill out. Humans have trouble digesting grains and lactose because of our relatively recent evolution (all humans). Chefs know this because we study nutrition facts and cook for people how don't! Don't be smug
