- Listen to that dead lifter. Its common to hear your lifters ticking on a early morning cold start with these trucks that goes away after a few seconds. The real problem happens when it doesn't go away. You may still be in luck though with just a quick cleaning. This truck is too late and the damage is already done. I will be having another video soon showing the cleaning process you can try so stay tuned!
You have no oil pressure and hydraulic lifters, they are gonna be noisy. Remove the oil pan and replace the oil pump pick up tube o-ring. They usually start to go bad around the 150k-200k. To verify you can add extra oil, 3-4 quarts and jack the rear of the truck up to put the oil to the front of the pan, and above the o-ring, start it up and see if your pressure is better.
bingo, heres the updated video if you want to watch it. czcams.com/video/E_XuC1M0h1k/video.html
I was thinking the same thing there's no oil going to the lifters oil pump is bad
New oil pump installed not long ago by previous owner, but good thinking cause he knicked the pickup tube o-ring
I was about to say the same thing but it also sounded like a rod knock on top of the lifter noise.
@@apacheone3643 rod knock lol you're nuts. First step in this repair is fix the oil pressure issue. A tick is almost always associated with a lifter. Come on man.
When you have lifter noise in these motors,, check your oil pressure. If its around 30lbs, you have to put a new o-ring on the oil pickup tube into the oil pump and clean the debris clogging the pickup screen. When done, your oil pressure should go back up to 45 lbs.Dont forget to flush the gunk out using transmission fluid, kerosene, or whatever brand you use.
Don Rutter can I do the same on a 2011 Silverado ?
Andrew Rodriguez yes but at running temp and idle, the pressure goes down. Should be running 40 when driving.
I’ve had many of these trucks with the 5.3s and 4.8s, the only time the oil pressure sits around and above 40 is when you’re driving. It sits between 35-38 at idle generally, and at or just above 40 when driving
Thanks mine just tried this and if fixed my tick! Have an 07 tahoe 5.3
Definitely ain’t enough oil pressure need to be at 40 while idling
Like the guys are saying here. I have fixed two by simply replacing the $8 pick up tube “O” ring. They flatten and crack. It’s like sucking through a straw with a hole in it. The “O” ring and gasket from dealer very inexpensive. Go after that before thinking you have bearing or pump issues. I removed valve cover before and after and immediately saw the oil in the front. Before the ring change the oil never made it to the top end of 1 and 3. Good luck.
That's intrusive it sounds though? Right?
I wonder if my 99' gmc needs these replaced? It's got 264,000 miles on it and you do hear that ticking sound until it warms up.
My first thought was that the noise was coming from excessive valve lash, but then I thought all GM V/8's had hydraulic lifters, so then I concluded that with that oil pressure being that low the engine has some severe oil bleeding somewhere. I would not drive that truck with oil pressure that low. This assessment is coming from arm chair mechanic!
mine was doing same....changed the o ring on pickup tube to oil pump connection and all is better now.
This is one hell of a fantasy custom truck
@ McCracken - 😅 one of my best trucks for sure
Low oil pressure and looks like no oil is coming up the pushrods, I'm surprised it doesn't sound worse.
I had an lifter tic in my 08 GMC 5.3. I used Lucus synthetic oil stabilizer along with 5/30 synthetic mobile1 oil, and so far so good.
Good to know! Thanks
Did you drain the oil after adding treatment
It happens in Impala sedans, too! Experience taught me that.
Back in my day we used to use temporary "clips" that install on the pushrod side of the rocker arm to contain the oil that got sprayed while you were troubleshooting. I was surprised to see no oil at all when you were running the engine.
My truck has 252xxx miles on its 5.3. only issue it has is a bit of oil consumption issue between changes. It uses 1 to 1.5 quarts of oil. Had a bit of lifter noise then checked oil level. That's when it was low. Filled back up to a hair under 6 quarts and it's purrrring like a cat again.
At idle little no oil comes out, has he accelerated it would have shot out. Also assuming he drained oil beforehand aswell. Make a jump cable for starter so don’t have to be in truck. You just want it running long enough to find which it is. Don’t leave it running lol
The filter behind oil sending unit could be clogged after tacking it out complet if you dont have pressure its the pump no cost and can be done with two swivels without pulling intake. Still doing it pull heads and the lifter trays inspect each lifter and look for pits and flat spots also make ahure cam is not hurt it super as 2 hour job bottom to top front diff if it4wd22mm, dont nees to pull axel, pan bolts all 10mm including harness grommet and trans line grommet then both plastic inspecrion plates also 10mm, two 15 mm bolts on bellhouseing to pan its gonna fall out. My 06 Sierra 5.3 makes a noise like this but not the same. Not always on cold starts and majority happens when the engine warms up. It’s a Ticking noise and 4 exhaust manifold bolts are broken. One from each Corner
Wow bro I didn't have to read it all, That's top notch shit right there. Right on
Changed out my oil pump and started running 15w40 on mine and runs good at 283000 miles still running strong
I put 10/30 and Lucas in my 5.3 and the hydraulic lifter on #4 dropped
From being to thicc
Guess I just can’t have thicc things
Depends on your climate too. Thicker is good for cold climates like Montana or even further up north.
@@StayHydrated-wd5icwouldn’t thicker be better for hot temps like in the south? Thinner up north where it’s cold. Doesn’t make sense to me to have thicker oil in the colder temps.
I had the same problem on my 06 crew cab Z71. I tried all the motor flushes that I seen on previous CZcams channels. It’s seem to go away just a little bit but would come back it got louder and louder. After doing tons of research and learning about the GM piston slap. It is due to the cast iron block and the oversize skirts on the Pistons that will tap until the truck is heated up. This was not the case in my truck. I ended up calling and putting new LS seven a listers new lift her tray and new pushrods. I have drove it now for over 40,000 miles and zero sound. I also noticed before I done the work on it my all pressure would hardly get up to 40 pounds only if I was deep into the gas pedal. Now since the works been done I can barely tap it in my old gauge will get up over 40 every time I’m dealing with a front differential problem now after the truck being lifted. Also the slapping under the dash is the intermediate steering shaft had to change that as well. That should have been covered under GM as well. Seems they are only building for looks now not durability and sound lol
They don't want them to last forever. They want you buying a new truck every 10 years.
My 5.3 blew cylinder 7 which was about 20,000 mi after engine rebuild from Chevy for excessive oil consumption recall. I sent it to a speed shop and replaced lifters, valvesprings pushrods along with new cam, headers, full exhaust, DOD delete and custom tune. Oh man could she breathe after that
Speed shop? Haha sounds fun! How much did that end up costing in total if you don’t mind me asking?
Yeah cincy speed was their name they were open from 93-2017. If I remember correctly it was about 6k by the time they were done. It was a 2 week job. Unfortunately I sold the truck which I really regret now
Seven is the one that goes first too much compression in that cylinder
Oil pump pick up tube o-ring need to be replace if you have low oil pressure
What if you have good oil pressure and still ticking ?
Not always
@@chevyss18 I’ve got the same problem right now. I believe these trucks have hydraulic roller lifters, so a lifter has probably collapsed and is not making good contact between the push rod and cam lobe. My truck started doing this when driving not long after my oil pressure dropped down to about 18 psi. The pick up seal can flatten out and allow air to pass through, reducing pressure. However usually it will be an oil pump going bad, at least in my experience.
I have a 06 3500 with the 6.0 with 335,000 miles , Its been ticking for the last 150k Miles. Sometimes it does it sometimes it don’t. I’m going to drive it till it quits and put a new engine in it.i have great oil pressure though
Bro Martin I have a similar situation. 6.0 with 227k sounds like lifter noise with almost 80 psi oil pressure.
It will never quit!
Yea it wont quit it's a heavy ass ls1thats all.
.thing will run forever..
My '03 ticks only when it's cold, but after just a few minutes, it runs as smooth as a baby's bottom
Did yours ever blow? I got a 04 with 150k doing the same thing I've replaced the oil pump ,pickup tube and oring and oil sender. Still does the same thing. I'm thinking it's a bearing
I have seen a lot of these engines tapping with good oil pressure, but they had the wrong w oil, changed oil to recommended fixed like magic.
I’ve heard many say their engine got noisy when they switched to using full synthetic. Also yes, important to stick with the proper weight oils.
@@FantasyCustoms4Life yup I did a oil change with Pennzoil platnium high mileage full synthetic 5w30 and a purgulator boss filter. Started ticking right when I started it up. Now it ticks for a few minutes when it gets to normal operating temp.
Not sure what to do?
Should I try 10w40 conventional oil?
I would run conventional but you may have worse problems than that. It’s worth a shot at least to see if it solves your issue.
I bought a f250 6.7 for this very reason. Lack of power in comparison to dodge and ford and the famous lifter tick. Glad I did. Life long Chevy guy before this.
After u replace oil pump and still have noise, use a long steel pipe ,put one end to ur ear and the other on each rocker . One t a time of course, u should be able to tell which one is loose. Turn a 1/4 at a time till it stops. At least that was how it use to be.
Oil pump was done by previous owner but upon install of the new oil pump the pickup tube o-ring was torn and this resulted in very low oil pressure. It was used with low pressure long enough to ruin some lifters and the camshaft. I know very well what you're referring to on the older style engines with adjustable tappet style rocker arms.
To prevent lifter & oil pressure problems in LS engines , add 1/4 of a qt of automatic transmission fluid to the crankcase 100 miles before you change the oil & filter....do this on every oil change 3 to 5000 miles, this is the easiest fix for any pushrod engine..!
Please tell me what is the purpose of the trans fluid and how does it help? Don't say detergent or that it cleans the sludge.
@@danieljames5875 The lifter oiling holes are small in those engines, any kind of dirt will keep the lifter from pumping-up and working correctly....Did you notice how low the oil pressure is..? my 2001 5.3 holds 40-60 psi all of the time , the truck in the video has a pick-up tube in the oil pan with a leaking o-ring ( my guess ) ....? I also flush my oil system with diesel fuel before oil changes ...300k runs like new ...! Automatic transmission fluid is high detergent ...and will help cut the varnish build-up on parts..!
@@Wildkat-1 yes the o ring is probably screwed. But trans fluid is not the answer for anything. If you do your research you will find that most engine oils have 15 to 20 times the detergent that trans fluid does. Also trans fluids base oil is 0 weight so u are also thining the oil. Trans fluid doesnt need lots of detergent because their is no carbon buildup in a trans. If u want the most detergent in a motor oil then u would find in research that mobile 1 has the most detergent of the bunch. not that I'm recommending that. Fix the o-ring and go from their.
Also how did u get varnish in the engine lol?? Did u dump that in there to clean the trolls out. Sorry just wondering why their is varnish in an engine.
My 2008 started doing that at low mileage so I got rid of it and got a 2013 f150 xlt 5.0 and haven’t had one problem. About to hit 90k miles.
Got a 2013 Silverado with 5.3 almost to 100k miles and no issues.
Until the plugs shoot out the block
I’ve got 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 with 250,000, never had a problem. In the time I’ve owned this truck a couple of buddies have burned through a few Fords apiece. It’s pretty hard to kill an ls.
It's a well known fact that 99' gmc sierra's have a problem with lifter and valve ticking. Why has there not been a recall on this problem? GMC needs to step up and recall these vehicles back and fix these problems and do the right thing. It's obvious that there is a design flaw and should have been fixed before they even put these vehicles out to sell. They don't mind taking our money but they won't stand behind their product that they sell.
If you are a owner of any chevy truck or tahoe years 2001-2014 use full synthetic oil like Royal Purple or Mobile 1 then get one bottle of Rislone and add to every oil change do this 2 times at 2,500 miles only for the first two oil changes and after u can go your normal oil changes but it will take away the lifter ticking or lifter knocking I had the same problem when I first bought my 2005 chevy tahoe LT with 149,000 miles and did this process and it took it away completely it took me driving maybe 50 miles and it stop.. And now I have 189,000 and never ever made any sound since trust me Rislone works with oil changes on the chevy 4.8 and 5.3 engines its been around for 50+ years look it up
Don't forget the 99-2000 model had the same 4.8 5.3 6.0 vortec. I actually never run synthetic in any of mine I owned many 99-03 models and have heard countless stories of problems with people running synthetic in the earlier models 99-06. I cant speak too much for the newer models besides a 2010 Silverado 5.3 ran mobil 1 full synthetic since new at day 1 and at 100k miles the lifter and cam lobe on cylinder 8 went (cylinder 8 is a non AFM lifter)
I do agree with using rislone and have heard of people using all sorts of things from a quart of ATF to MMO or anything very high in detergent which is why royal purple and other types of oils may have extra detergents in there to help clean out dirt sludge and varnish. Cheers Michael!
@@FantasyCustoms4Life thx.. But I have heard the 99-2000 didn't have the lifter fail rate like the 2001 and up chevys did.. Is that true in your opinion???
I never really heard that much. Occasional problems from oiling issues normally lack of maintenance and normal cold startup lifter noise or piston slap. Same lifters until 08 when they got into AFM design and had known problems.
Have a 2016 Suburban with the 5.3. $8900.00 later, we have new LIFTERS and a camshaft installed. Cylinder deactivation lifter failed. Old school lifters don't fail. Oh and it's had Mobile ONE synthetic oil its entire life.
That’s a heavy bill! Old school lifters do fail but not nearly at the rate and low miles these afm style lifters go. If you can live without the afm working there is several routes you can go to disable them to prevent near future similar issues. Best of luck!
Damn…… that will buy me 3 fully rebuilt 6.0 lq4 for my 03 suburban 2500 or 2 lq9’s…… basically I could restore my 03 suburban for $9k😂
I got a 06 6.0 with 275k miles and the tick just happens when I start it up,after a while
It goes away and I make sure to check my oil pressure and it’s always good
Mine does the same at 200,000
I just rid my '05 1500 5.3 of the tapping noise. What I notice is whenever someone removes the valve cover, there is a copper or dark film. Makes me thinks there is "sticktion" going on. I solved by running Marvel prior to oil change (oil went from clean looking to black). Then used Marvel in the fuel. Went on several 100+ mile drives, and all gone. Mine has 120,000 and bought it for "when you need a truck" and it sits for a few weeks without being started. I will be running it at least once a week now.
Marvel mystery oil is great stuff. My current ‘01 6.0 ls has some hot lifter issue that oil changes seem to help but it always comes back eventually. Oil changes and treatments help at first but eventually it always comes back. Likely going to have to open it up someday for lifter replacement at minimum.
If no oil pressure, ck oil level, pull oil pan strainer not stopped up replace the pump if that don't fix, pull engine may have bad cam bearings.
Good advice, this truck had a fresh oil pump installed by previous owner but they cut the pickup tube o-ring in half on accident during install causing low oil pressure. I have seen other cases of low oil pressure from like you said, oil pickup screen clogged, bad oil pump, missing dumbbell, wrong weight oil, collapsed oil filter, etc.
I had same problem with mine a 2001 GMC 2500 6.0 everything was fine nothing out of place but took off oilpan found some needle bearings thought they were from rocker arms wrong they are smaller well it turns out a lifter turned and the small wheel was almost worn out to the center after engine dissembly lifter turned and I guess while driving for several 1000 miled I think the cam got so hot from friction all cam bearing surfaces the babbit was gone bearings worn down to the copper part and one spun in the bore--bye bye biock. Hope you have better luck.
My LM7 swapped 68 C10 made the same noise but it was to late. The push rod is now in the shape of the letter S. live and learn.
That’s getting off easy push rods are cheap if that’s all that went. Something didn’t wanna turn right though and I’m guessing she needs a lifter too?
Holy shit. Freaked me out with the missing beard
Haha, I was told I look more scary with a beard.
Always check oil pressure manually first If none pull pan check pickup screen. If clear replace pump. 30+ yrs
This is from a GM Mechanic, there’s not enough oil pressure. Need a bigger pump, maybe an external stand alone pump.
I actually changed my oil pressure sensor which restored my oil pressure dramatically. Still got the ticking noise though. Getting real pissed as I just purchased this truck!!
If the oil pressure switch was going out then you have had good oil pressure and the switch just was not reading correctly and that’s actually pretty common. Here is a video of my silverado with good oil pressure and a constant loud tick and misfire. Was a bad lifter and camshaft. If the lifter is going out sometimes if caught early on the camshaft can maybe be saved before it wipes a lobe out on the cam.

Try Lucus Synthetic oil Stabilizer, I had an lifter tic in my 08 GMC 5.3. and so far so good.
I got issues with mine I just bought
There is no oil pressure at all since those little hole up from the lifter there should be spraying it with oil constantly if not means you fucked the block is dirty and those oil cannals are not letting to flow any oil
My 5.3 with 186k does this with 40 pounds of oil pressure at idle and 70 any other time like warm up or on the throttle.. noticed some slight metal in the oil
They come apart I have 03 sub and mine broke the roller off the exhaust lifter in back.. yeah put all back together and now it's fine till it started making the noise again.. its frustrating
metal in my oil and #5 plug is fouling with oil, thinking a bad valve guide might need more though 6.0 @340k
Is the rear bearing in the muffler
could be low on knock fluid eh?
FantasyCustoms4Life probably low on blinker fluid
Oil pick tube o ring. That fix my 2000 gmc
My 2000 GMC Yukon is making the same noise
Fixed my 2009 5.3l same noise
It's the o ring on the oil pick up tube that hooks to the oil pump have to drop the oil pan you might as well replace the oil pump and timing chain and sprocket well you at it 😅
Looks like no or extremely low oil pressure I didn’t see any oil flowing out pushrods
My 4.2 Ford F150 does the same thing only when it’s in drive though
O-ring on the oil pickup tube in the oil pan is bad
That low oil pressure would be THE FIRST thing I would be fixing
Wouldn't let you work on my truck running it that long with no oil coming out of the pushrods..
This truck was bought specifically to edjumacate folks on here. Thanks for the comment though.
My 86 s15 is ticking like this too. Just had engine rebuilt and transmission but when trans went it it kinda added this ticking. The oil pressure gauge is all the way up and check gauge light is on what can it be? Been less than a month with rebuilt engine
Could be a lot of things I would say something must be off though it shouldn’t be ticking and being such a fresh rebuild I would be skeptical of the engine rebuild.
They make oil clips to use running with valve cover off...
Good to know. In this case the truck was making such low oil pressure it wasn't making a mess.
first thing I noticed . where's the rocker stoppers ? before he started it I thought there's going to be oil all over . then when he started it you couldn't even see oil coming out of the pushrod/rocker holes . so yeah i'll go , like most of the other commentators with low oil pressure . man , this armchair mechanics is way more fun than actually getting you're hands dirty . [ sarcasm implied . ]
oil pick up tube the o-ring is bad .
Looks like oil pressure is the problem.
Had this issue before an was gm that actually caused the dammage an didnt stand behind warranty. Long story short took heads off replaced headgaskets an when they saw felpro head gaskets no alarms went off for them so they put their oem gaskets on an never trued the heads. Ok if you see other gaskets wouldn't you think ok these were off before better true the heads. Nope just slapped back together an their on i was dilling coolant reservoir every two weeks. I knew what was happening an around a 1000 miles i would get that knocking like tou had an knew where my coolant was going straight into oil an fought with them they knew i was right but still threw b.s my way corporate was usless. Never again with a chevy dealer. This was their top mechanic on my truck. This guy is a joke an i had my words with him also.
Steve 39 sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. I have heard many horror stories of dealerships doing bad work and then not standing behind it. Dealerships are huge money and corporate is even bigger. I think it often comes down to greed when this stuff happens and started with someone’s incompetence or cutting corners, a lot of times even just are flaws from manufacture showing up. I have never been blessed with having the money to buy new or even new enough to have a warranty but someday I will get my shot. Like I tell people I wanna be the one who breaks it not the one who fixes it. Haha thanks for the comment have a blessed day. Cheers
A little sea foam in the crank case pumps up my lifters after each oil change
The fact that you were squirting oil everywhere is a good sign
Change your oil pump
You should far more oil flowing out of the lifters than that !
When I was diagnosing the lifter noise in my LS1 engine oil was squirting out of the lifters everywhere, I tested the oil pressure when warm which was 30 PSI at idle,40 @ 2000 RPMs & 60 @ 4000 RPM's so that was all good.
In your case, it could be a bad oil pump or engine bearings,in my engine, the lifters got a bit mushroomed & stuck in the lifter bores.
So,I'm going to replace all of the lifters.
I know in my dads car he fitted a used Buick L36 V6 engine which they had taken the oil pump off.
All of the lifters rattled on startup & no oil made it up to the top of the engine so we hooked up an oil pressure gauge to test it at the oil pressure switch port.
There must've been an air pocket in the oil galleries because the oil pressure shot up to 60 PSI @ idle speed as they have a high volume oil pump fitted standard.
You will have to watch my follow up video on this truck. It was a bad oil pickup tube o-ring causing the low oil pressure. I do agree that it could have also been a bad oil pump or engine bearing causing the low oil pressure condition. Thanks for your comment.
When I pulled the oil gallery drain plug out a few years ago a fair bit of alluvial sand (grains of dirt) came out with the oil so that could've also been causing the problem, at the moment, the cylinder head gaskets & head bolts are still on the way & I was held up with the timing cover side because with the gasket kit I was supplied with a rear main seal instead of a front crankshaft seal, also the oil pickup tube o ring wasn't supplied so I ordered them separately.
Block under the valve cover they're hitting the cover if you look
So I watched the second vid but couldn't understand if the o ring fixed the tick and the oil pressure also?
Yes, oil pressure was low due to a bad suction on the oil pickup tube from a bad o-ring on the pickup tube. This low pressure caused the lifters to get noisy ticking and clattering all about.
@@FantasyCustoms4Life so replacing the o ring totally solved the lifter chatter? Thank you for the reply.
Notice no oil on the rockers 😳🧐👍🏿
*Question! I have 40lbs Of pressure of oil but I’m having a tapping noise like the video, what can be wrong?*
Sometimes the lifters can be cleaned, other times they are just worn out and can ruin the camshaft too like in this video it shows the replacement due to this problem. czcams.com/video/jt9SLgeufZA/video.html&lc=Ugwu69OPBjdKWk-71eZ4AaABAg
No oil up top red flag
while you have the valve cover off and the engine idling you can push down on the end of the rocker thats over the top of the valve spring and find out which spot is making the noise
they're all tapping because the oil pressure is low
what causes that sound and what is the cost to fix it with a mechanic my car is Chevrolet Silverado 2011
The lifters don’t get proper oil which causes them to start ticking. Eventually they will get damaged along with the camshaft. You have the newer year which can also have AFM style lifters which can drive the price up too. Anywhere from an oil change up to new lifters, camshaft and maybe vlom gaskets if you have afm. Here is my video of new camshaft and lifter in a 2010 5.3 with AFM - m.czcams.com/video/jt9SLgeufZA/video.html&lc=Ugw1a-qkzjMlU46oEOx4AaABAg
What if you have high oil pressand a tick ?
I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY TRUCK OS MAKING A RATTLING NOISE THAT SEEMS THAT IT COMES FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE MOTOR BUT IT MIGHT BE A LIFTER IDK :( I have a video to show you if you can help me out please
Can you paste the link to the video here so I can watch it? Thanks
I have a 2005 Chevy 2500HD with a 6.0 liter. It has, I think one, making noise from about 5 minutes after starting until about 10 minutes and then goes away until the engine has sat and cooled. It has been going on for a few months. I have added Marvel Mystery oil to it for a few oil changes and the first couple of times the lifter sticking noise went away but back now.
You have dry start u need to put an oil filter on it that dosent drain back
Did you ever get this figured out? I have had this exact issue on my 5.3 since the day I bought it a year and a half ago. I have spent a ton of hours researching and this is the first time I've ever seen anyone with the same issue. Runs fine, about 5 minutes in, lifter tick starts, about 5 minutes later and it will never do it again until the engine cools off. MMO helped me the first time and then came back after a couple of months before the next oil change.
Fairly certain it is a valve with crud stuck to it. I've had 2 friends that are mechanics listen to it and had me cal a buddy of theirs that is a chevy hot rod guru. He listened over the phone and told him step by step what was going on. He said if it was a lifter it would do it at start up, being it only does it shortly before full running temp he recommended putting aerosol SeaFoam thru it but 2 cans at the same time and let it sit for 2 hours not a few minutes. The sound went away for 2 days and almost undetectable for several more days. He said it is common on these engines and said to find a place that sells gas with no ethanol in it, haven't found that yet. I have thought about running tranny fluid in the oil for a few miles then change it out but hot rod guru said if the Seafoam helped that it is valve not the lifter.
You're a life saver man, thanks for the reply! I tried b-12 chemtool down into the lifter with no luck and was finally starting to get worried.
So you did 2 cans of aerosol into the intake while idling before its at running temp correct?
I had it up to running temp but had a friend hold the pedal down enough to keep it from choking down. Was told that it might and to have it revved up just a little and expect a lot of white smoke. It tried to choke down a little but never saw the white smoke. I still get the tick but it does not last as long and plan on doing the same thing again. And you are welcome, wished I had a more permanent solution. If I do come across more I will put it on here.
you dont have enough oil psi you need to check that first 15.20 psi at idle hot 40 -60 cold
The low oil pressure was fixed on this engine in a more recent video on my channel. All it needed was a new pickup tube o-ring. Unfortunately it was too late to save the lifter (not sure how long it was used with low oil pressure by the previous owner but long enough to ruin lifters) thanks
@@FantasyCustoms4Life so I was driving and truck died on me (4.8) , hesitated to turn on but once it did started knocking, same noise and everything, truck has been reading 0psi but took it as a faulty oil sending unit, should I replace the o ring as well ? Or any tips
@akidim13 I don’t want to alarm you but that sounds like a rod knock. Truck dies while driving then hesitates to turn on. Then when it does, it knocks...
My old 5.0 f150 used to sound like that and it had around 200k miles... sold it to a friend and he drove it as is for another year or so before it got taken away from him....
I got a 2012 chevy silverado 4.8 and it's also making that noise. So would it be the lifters? Or?
It would be the lifters or something in the valve-train.
@FantasyCustoms4Life forsure, going to take it in today. When I accelerate it makes the ticking sound go faster. And it does seem like it's coming from the passenger side. Smh been having the truck for 4 years now. Eventually something will give out. The truck has been good to me for the last 4 years tho.
@@aceboogie3538 Hey, they all break no matter what you drive! Hopefully you get off easy and it’s just a bent push rod or something easy to change. Good luck and cheers!
@@FantasyCustoms4Life I know bro hoping it isn't to bad. Thanks
hello because there is no lubrication I have the same problem with the same noise?
Yeah it is normally the case, yes.
@@FantasyCustoms4Life
thanks friend excellent videos greetings, from mexico i follow your channel

@walter sol - Thanks for commenting. I always enjoy hearing from a fan! Cheers
The rocker arms seemed ok, have you removed the intake manifold and actually looked at the lifters?
You can't see the lifters from under the intake on these engines. You have to pull the heads.
Looks real clean under the rocker cover, or did you clean it up?
You have a good eye. No one ever really asked me for the full history that I was told about this truck. I bought the truck as a parts truck, never talked to the owner but his friend told me that the owner had the heads worked, fresh oil pump installed and a new water pump. First thing I noticed was a cracked frame and asked about it to which this was news to them apparently and price wasn’t negotiable so I left, the price was too high at the time because I knew it was no longer street able and was destined for parts and the graveyard. So after another few weeks go by I get a call saying he’s going to lower the price and it sounds like something I would maybe agree on for a parts vehicle. I get back over to look at the truck again and I ask to hear it run (didn’t hear it the last time) he starts it up to which it’s ticking and the oil pressure is nothing just like in the video. After haggling over another $100 for the piece of junk I buy the truck (it has no brakes and I almost crash it at the end of the driveway due to blown brake line) I get it home towed the rest the way and diagnose the motor down to this pickup o-ring. He must have pinched the o-ring trying to get the pickup tube installed when installing the new oil pump. After that oring repair the motor was strong and I had some fun with the truck and parted it out. Cheers
@@FantasyCustoms4Life Cool!
Why does your cluster not tell you about low oil pressure? Mine sounds similar to yours on winter cold starts, gonna end up getting high volume oil pump and o ring replaced.
Not sure, I’ve had a few that wouldn’t give that message when it should have. It was always on 99 models with 5.3’s.
Bruh the oil did not come out whyy!!! The oil should come out from the small hole in the rocker😟
Also can lifter noise mean a valve could drop into the cylinder? I heard these rumors. Thanks.
It happens, never had it happen on me though.
I don't think so on these motors
Good video it's so helpful, but I would like to know if I can change a lifter with out removing the head?
Not on the 4.8 5.3 or 6.0
NO. As far as I know, there are no Gen 3 or Gen 4 LS motors that have access to the lifters until you pull the head.....
Nope pull head not that bad
The o ring was the issue with my 6.0
Exactly, my brother said just open the oil pan and check the the o Ring related to oil pump and replace it.
Problem gone engine 4.8
@@Leto4900 where is it
Mine ended up being the screen under the oil pressure switch , I removed the screen an now no more noise
David Rost what screen is that?
@@rvvinuya there is a screen behind the oil sending unit located at the back of the block on the drivers side. When you buy the new oil sending unit it comes with a new screen that goes in the hole after you put the plug in
@@DylanClements98 that is a very common problem with 2007.5 and newer gm trucks. I’ve replaced 3 oil pressure sensors. They are at the back of the intake near the firewall. I pull the screens out with a dental pic. If your gauge is reading wonky or zero pressure that’s where I start. But my engines never had the engine noise like in this video. Cheers
What was the problem after all i have a 09 gmc sierra 1500 with same issue any tips on what i need to do to fix that tick
m.czcams.com/video/E_XuC1M0h1k/video.html
- this video goes in depth covering most of the issues that can result in lifter noise and other oil pressure issues.
My Silverado has the same noise and some mechanic told me it’s the timing chain ?
A worn stretched timing chain can cause the timing to be off. It will show up more after the engine gets warm it will loose power, lower mpg, cause it to have a rough idle, and get a clatter to it all due to the timing being off because of the stretched chain/worn sprockets. I see stretched timing chain less often than lifter issues but isn’t impossible and if it has the other symptoms then is likely the chain and not lifter. Thanks
I have lifter tick but my truck has good oil pressure. Never that low. probably dry starts
@ Dom Vito - I have one now that’s the same way, a random hot lifter tick. Could be sludge making its way around from neglect, or worn parts like a worn lifter or lifter tray letting the lifter goes sideways. Hard to say without inspection but I have a lot of luck keeping the oil and filter fresh.
@@FantasyCustoms4Life my lifter tick was dude to cheap oil.
Went for premium never heard it again.
My Chevy 2010 has a lifter noise on left side cold starting then fades away, my oil pressure reads 40 good pressure? Anyone have some info, it has 80,ooo miles
Ricky castor ya my 2007 has 150,000 burns oil I take care of it well I go through about a quart a month but for lifters they just do that tell they build oil pressure then it goes away completely normal
Trevor Carroll it just started doing this ?
cold start lifter noise is pretty common and it should go away within 30 seconds of idling. Its when it starts to show back up randomly during running or doesn't go away when you have to start worrying about it.
I have an 06 Sierra with a 5.3 and I have the in famous lifter tick it sounds just like that but it goes away so I'm going to have to replace the lifter I have oil pressure
any update on this? I have the same tick as well, but i do have good oil pressure.
Question, how can I get this 4 minutes added back onto my life?
The rocker arms are too dry - no oil fix it immediately or next will be rod knock.
i have the same problem in my truck but i changed the lifter and spring when i did the cam swap what could it be
If it is your lifters making the noise then you may have an oil pressure issue. We go over a lot of the possibilities in my videos and the comments. Thanks
I'm having the same sound to my truck any clue its knock n make a bad sound n oil pressure low too
stuck oil pressure valve in oil pump
mine just started making the same sound but it's a lot louder
Thats not good, do you have low oil pressure as well? I have a video coming out soon showing lifter and camshaft replacement so stay tuned!
ndleinahaystack I took my cover off and found 5 rockers loose/worn out. Truck has 153k miles so it's expected
Only a 153??? These are Chevy 5.3 and 6.0 engines some of the best engines ever. I have a 5.3 and a 6.0 and I have never replace the pick up tube until now. Both my engines have well over 300k oh and I also have a 2002 8.1 w/ the Allison and it has 407,106 miles on it. My point being......you have 153k miles on your 5.3 and you are already replacing things that’s shouldn’t need replacing until another 75k-100k miles. Give that Chevy better care my friend
I have a 2008 silverado 5.3, and now i have a loud knocking noise(sounds like metal on metal) coming from the engine, that when driving gives a little stall and kick to go along with every knock, very concerning, ever heard of anything like that.?
If it’s misfiring badly like mine was and acting like it’s stalling and kicking and bucking and shuddering and shaking that was similar to mine with just a bad lifter/can lobe causing a dead cylinder.
Never said how many miles on those motors
Good question! This one had 220k miles on it.
Can a bad oil pressure switch and screen cause ticking ?
@ Marcus walker - I’m not sure about that. I know it can make your pressure read low though. If the screen is clogged there will be more stuff in other areas likely though so a good flush if it’s ticking could help you. Cheers
I have lifter tapping now coming from the left side of my 6.0 2001 lt chevy suburban. My oil pressure is at 40 while idling and goes up about 60 when driving. Also it gets weird sometimes when idling (gets a little rough.) What must I do? Thanks.
You might need to pull your head and check/replace the lifters and also check the cam lobes out as well.
@@FantasyCustoms4Life found out it's a manifold issue!!!!! Yay!!!!!!
@@FantasyCustoms4Life it's not lifters I'm so happy!!!!!!
That is great news! I’ve had to deal with manifold issues before on these engines as well. On mine it would start right up normal but then either immediately die or you could hit the throttle and it would idle roughly for a few extra seconds before stalling. I have another video posted on here about how I diagnosed it was a manifold leak and then when I went to repair normally it’s just bad intake manifold gaskets. well after putting the new updated gasket on it was only slightly better but still the same. I then sourced a junkyard intake manifold and installed it reusing the new intake gaskets I bought and it was back to perfect running condition. So in my case the plastic intake manifold was actually warped. Thanks for the comments! Best of luck. Video of me showing how to find the manifold leak or any vacuum leaks.
m.czcams.com/video/oqqSno5b9jo/video.html
@@FantasyCustoms4Life we have two broken bolts on the drivers side, and one broken bolt on the passenger side. The leak so far is on the left. Now will this cause issues because sometimes my suburban decides to idle rough (shop couldn't find the cause sheesh)
Why do I at 454000 miles have 40 lbs @ idle, oil psi, and I run 10-40 Vavoline High Mileage in that? I know why, highway miles, and frequent oil changes. It all breaks down to preventive maintenance!
Mine has a little ticking sound especially now that its getting cold. its more of an on and off thing. the noise comes and goes.
I would say that sounds different than most of my "normal" lifter ticking issues on 95% of these trucks that I have had (over 15 trucks 4.8, 5.3 & 6.0). For me the noises on most these trucks have always gone away within a minute of starting the vehicle. If you are driving and are hearing noises come and go I would think you have a more severe lifter problem or possibly some other problem and may want to attempt to do some lifter cleaning/motor flush to help prolong your motor life and not have to open it up. Once the noise comes for good there is likely permanent damage done to in my case both the lifter that was struggling and also if left run like that for any time at all, the cam lobe with respecting lifter will end up damaged as well. I have a new video coming out shortly on replacing the lifters and also replacing the camshaft on these engines. Thanks
It doesn't seem like a collapsed lifter they're all moving good
It’s not collapsed completely just super low on oil pressure making it loose and noisy.
Does anyone kno if I can remove the lifters the same way the cam comes out? Bottom of my lifter broke and can’t remove true the top, plz help! Thanks!
i have high oil pressure and my 04 5.3 silverado has lifter tick can you please help out!
Normally nothing to worry about except with the lifter tick along with it makes me wonder. What’s the gauge reading?
FantasyCustoms4Life my truck used to take a while to tik but now it tiks all the time and i did my oil change recently with motor flush do i need to replace my lifters ??
@@bryannevarez8408 Yes I would pull your lifters and look them over if any wear look down that lifters tray and see if the cam lob is possibly bad too.
@Danny Walker Sounds like a major problem I would surely take it back. best of luck
0 oil pressure. And a bottom end knock. It's the valve inside the block
The valve inside the block?? No sir. Nice guess though.
You might be referring to the dumbell. Otherwsie I have no a clue what you're talking about.
Help ASAP!!
I have a ‘07 Chevy Avalanche 5.3L with low oil pressure.
I’ve changed the oil pressure sensor and oil pan but I am still having low oil pressure reads and a loud ticking. My mechanic is telling me that they need to replace the engine entirely. Is there anything else we can do before I have to put a new engine?
Did you try putting a new oil pump in yet?
that might be the next thing on my list before scrapping the engine. I am thinking when the mechanic replaced the pan they didn’t replace the pick up tube o-ring and that might be causing the low pressure oil.
But because they don’t know the cause they recommend that an engine replacement might be the best option...
That is a common problem to have. It may be worth trying out first. I’m not sure what they are charging to swap in another replacement engine but I hope it all works out for you without leaving your bank account completely drained.
O ring on sump tube
What is the whining noise my truck is doing that
Power steering pump
Anyone know why the abs and the brake lights turn on?
Mines turn on at times then when i turn off the truck it turns off and then don’t turn back on until a couple of days
In this case of this truck they are on due to a bad break line that leaks and has lost the pressure.
I just had a oil change tho
