The motor flush is a good idea, but just do it one time. After that, refill with a good quality oil and filter and substitute one quart for Marvel Mystery Oil. Use one quart of that with every oil change. Do your changes every 5,000 miles. We did that to my friend's GM 6.0 motor and it had 180,000 miles with that annoying tick and after two oil changes that tick was gone. Now he uses 5 quarts of 5w30 and 1 quart of MMO with every oil change and no more problems.
I've been changing my oil every 3k miles, 5 quarts 5w-30 and 1 quart of MMO. I just recently gained a tick, sometimes it's quiet like this one and sometimes it's very loud. 237k miles and never a single tick out of the motor until one day I had it parked on an incline idling and the tick began, been around ever since. I have like 40psi oil pressure at idle. Not sure what to think of it.
My 2003 4.8 sounds the same way. All I do is change the oil with conventional oil. What ever is on sale... I now have 302k miles on it and still runs great and the sound is still the same .... awesome trucks ! I just got a 2000 with a 5.3 from a old man that has 89k original miles on it. Looking forward to 300k out of this one too!
Sometimes the piston skirt gets worn enough for the piston to develop a knock that very much resembles a lifter or connecting rod bearing. They can run for a hundred thousand miles or more noisy without any issues
Lmfao there's no way I could stand to hear the tick I am pretty lazy and I know the motor is simply built and will still run for hundreds of thousands of miles tick or not but, I can't stand all that damn chatter
I have a 2003 GMC sierra that I just put a brand new engine in. It’s a 5.3 and I put mobile one 5w 30 full synthetic in it. It had the same problem , brand new!! So I I went “old school” and put some 10W-30 in. It runs beautifully now that I changed over to 10W-30 conventional oil.
Run a couple quarts transmission fluid for a few minuites then change oil it will clean sticky lifters ,I don't care what some say but I put stp in at every oil change, since the 70s, my chevy van got over 400k miles still runs great my pickup had 320 k miles when I sold it my suburban has 237k miles never had a issue just take care of them
Thats just how those LS based engines sound when they have some mileage on them. Every fullsize GM I have owned made that lifter chatter noise, especially when it has been parked long enough for the engine to cool down. Never had any issues with the ticking or chatter, engine always ran well. It does get annoying though. Isnt really much you can do about it. Other than pulling the heads and replacing all the hydraulic lifter, its just something I have learned to live with. The main reason why these Vortec engine do that is because the oil in the hydraulic lifters eventually seeps out when the engine isnt running. So when you do start it up the lifter are essentially dry and it takes a few minutes for the oil pressure to refill the lifters allowing them to hydraulically adjust closing the gap between the lifter and pushrod. It sometimes may take longer for it to completely get all the lifters back full of oil and all the air pushed out. I have even seen nearly new low mileage Vortecs, especially the 5.3, chatter when started up from cold.
Yep, ive got the 5.3 Vortec in my 2002 Suburban. Its got 190something thousand miles on it, and sounds like this every cold start. Goes away after about 2-3 minutes (living in socal is doesnt get too cold here) and still runs like a beast.
@@FMChimera you may sell alot of these trucks BUT he is right ALOT of these "engines" tick(not limited to the trucks) I've seen the cameras do it too..the L89 version of the LS 5.3 litter engines have an Achilles heal and it's the lifters. Not talking about thenactive fuel management engines either..L89 Ls 5.3 in MY OWN 2007 SILVERADO DOES NOT HAVE THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT FEATURE..ALL OF THESE LIFTERS ARE JUNK..THEY NEED TO BE CHANGED TO GET RID OF THE NOISE.
You arw correct..I thought my 2007 5.3 silverado was an active fuel management engine..turns out its not..it is a L89 version of the LS series 5.3 litre engines that chevy produced. It doesn't have A.F.M.. but it does have this familiar tick. After it warms up you can shut it off repeatedly and the tick goes away PROVIDING THE OIL PRESSURE GOES OVER 40 ON THE GUAGE..
@@12taskforce mine does it, 190k miles. 03 silverado 6.0, and it burns a little oil. Nothing crazy, few months it’ll go down 1 dot on the dip stick. No big deal, it’s normal.
You can add Rislone High milage engine treatment at oil change and it will eliminate this issue. Or you can keep repeating your engine flush. Personally i use Rislone in my 2002 GM 8.1 at every oil change and lifter noise is eliminated. You dont have to use corrosive engine flush ever again.
I have used synthetic oil in my 2004 its whole life and it runs great with lots of power. Some old timers say conventional is better. Its not. The synthetic has molecules that go into the poors of the metal and keep it lubricated at all times. I partipated in a test of synthetic oil and conventional oil when the synthetic first came out. Believe me the synthetic oil beat the conventional oil hands down.
I have a 99 Silverado 1500 with 5.3l and it makes a ticking noise at startup, almost sounds like a diesel, but it does clear up after 30 seconds and sounds fine after that. It always did that as long as I've had the truck. I"m running Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W30 in it. I wouldn't be too worried about running the Fram Tough Guard series filters like what this truck had on it, the Tough Guard series is a heavy duty 4X4 application with synthetic filtering element. It's a great filter and relatively inexpensive. I give the Tough Guard a thumbs up and I use them on my vehicles. I don't lose a seconds sleep at night worrying about it.
Lol.i just got an 06 with 5.3 an thought damn i didnt know they run like a diesel lol.. But seriously its pretty rough. I currently run mobile one in my cars. Going to do the same with truck and listen for any change
Make sure you let the oil drain until it stops dripping; you don't want any of the flush left in the motor. Just switching to full synthetic makes a huge difference but get a second filter and quart of oil. 200 or so miles, change the filter and add to full again. The synthetic will clean a lot of crud left from the conventional oil even after a flush.
I have that typical GM lifter click for the longest time in my 03 Silverado so I bought some Amsoil engine flush ran that in there for 15 minutes got everything drained out put in the 530 Amsoil oil and now there is no ticking at all
I tell you what fixed mine. First of all you gotta pay the money for Zmax so it soaks and penetrates deep into the metal and then add 6 quarts of Lucas 10w-30 and change the belt. Runs and sounds like butter after that. You’re welcome
I just had this same issue, put half a bottle of seafoam in the oil, ran it for 15 minutes, changed the oil, then put the other half the bottle in there, drive it about 150 miles (already had a road trip planned), got back home and tick was 100% gone. I am going to leave this oil in there till time for oil change.
Did exact same dropped 1/2 a qt. in slightly too much oil, said Meh, Ill wait until next oil change, drove round trip 20 miles the ticking Almost completely disappeared. Sea Foam Oil Treatment. General rule never flush anything except maybe your power steering and brakes, anything else is possible disaster.
add about 1/2 qt. of atf at every oil change and problem solved, the 1st 2 or 3 oil changes drain out 2 or 3 qts and add atf and let it idle for a couple of hours and then change the oil. that cleans the lifters .
My 01 5.3L was ticking I put a half a bottle of seafoam in the gas tank and half in the Crankcase and ripped it up for about 300 miles and changed the oil and started running higher octane...sounds fine now.
Not lifters. This is the common piston slap that some 5.3’s can have. It’s harmless. Can be worrying and annoying but harmless. These engines regularly go over 400k with regular maintenance. Best advice I can give you is stay away from synthetic oil in the 5.3. Best oil for these is 5w30 penzoil conventional. It’s also the quietest.
good old Z7!!! nothing but paraffin wax. in 1976 i helped an old man tear down and rebuild the engine in our 69 impalla. was the 2nd rebuild i had helped on. first time i was 14 years old and ruined 3 good pair of levis jeans. this old man had an engine rebuilding business at home, and was a heavy equipment mechanic during the day. one look at the valley and he said we used penzoil oil. we had changed the oil like clock work from the day my folks bought it in 1970. i was 18 years old and i have refused to use penzoil ever since!!
I've always thought that synthetic should not be mixed with non synthetic oil, your oil pressure was lower because of the viscosity change by the flush stuff and temperature. :)
luis flores tell me more about the transmission fluid. I have a 03 4.8 with three 318,000. Interested in your half a quart of transmission fluid before oil change talk to me?
The lifter priming holes become varnished up and tiny carbon particles restrict the oil flow just enough to make the lifter not pump up properly and the ticking is caused by that in most cases ....flush the system like this ....drain about 2 quarts of oil , then add 1 qt of diesel fuel ...start the cold engine and let it idle only ( do not rev. the engine or put it in gear ) let it idle till it reaches normal running temperature , then let it idle for 5-10 more minutes , then change the oil & filter ....I do this on every other oil change on my 2001 Silverado 5.3 LS ...250k runs like new , has never had a lifter tick ..Luck..!
The lifter tick is beyond a common issue with these trucks anywhere over 100k, but that sounds a lot deeper than the lifter tick we usually hear. I'd keep a check when changing the oil for more bits of metal than usual. Good video by the way 👍
@@briandiehl2846 They all do it. Mine has had it for the last 80k miles which was when I got the 2000 Silverado with a 5.3 and it’s at 306k now and the noise hasn’t gotten any worse. Mine goes away when the oil pressure goes up as well. The usual issue that causes it can be fixed by getting the oil pickup tube o-ring for the oil pump so you get instant good oil pressure (it’s a two piece design for some reason and the suction gets worse as the rubber degrades) but it will require you to take the oil pan off. My oil pressure goes from nothing in the first second of startup up to around 25 then 30 then 35 and around 41 later on after it warms up. It should be like 55-60 immediately after startup.
@@buttonysquare8501 cool. Yeah i was wonderin about the pick up/ oil pump. Ill add that to the list. Im gonna go new lifters, springs, cam, and rods, rockers, and oil pump/pick up
Yo the vents gotta be open for the pan to drain smoothly and man that thing sounded like water after you drained the oil!!! It really did sound better at idle though 💯💯
I do the same thing with Seafoam, toss a can in with the oil, I usually drive it around the block a few times, drain and fill the oil and it works right out typically. The oil passages to the head are very narrow and stuff like this flushed those oil passages. The ticking is typically poor oil flow to head
Did the same thing in my 2010 and the tick is gone. There is a 3-mile straight away right in front of my housethat nobody ever drives down and so I opened it up to a hundred and just wrote that 3 mi and I haven't heard the tick since. And that's been about a month-and-a-half ago
Put some mid-grade or high-test gas in it. My 2012 silverado raddels like nothing else when i put regular gas in it. When i put mid-grade in it, it's quiet.
Hi I am a 42yr dealer tech I don’t recommend flushing anything the next time just add 1qt of marvel mistery oil &drive it it will clean the lifters it will not hurt anything change you oil as you should when it’s time
Jimmy Vickery Hey Sir, I have a 2006 Chevy 1500 Z71 with 214k on her and ticking loud. I just want to clarify that it is ok to put 5 quarts of full sythentic and add 1 quart of marvel mystery and drive it 3500 to 4000 miles till the next oil change?
Exactly! I have an 2008 that has 275k on it. It started ticking? I started putting a qt of Marvel Mystery oil in it every oil change. No more tick! The stuffs legit.
I have an 03 GMC Serra with the same noise found out it was a sticky lifter and it leaves slop on your rocker which is were my noise was coming from, and it caused my engine to burn oil to,just passing along into just in case someone else is having this problem.
Lower oil pressure doesn't always equal for concern as quality oils that contribute to LESS friction will produce less oil pressure as a result as well.
There are several ideas I've seen out there but the 1 thing I've never seen anyone do is replacing the O-ring on the pick up tube going into the oil pump. a buddy that works with GM performance said they have seen the Orings start breaking down causing intermittent suction loss. I have a 2006 4.8l in my service can with 250k+ miles on it. my lifter noise is completely random regardless of engine temp, driving conditions, type of oil or oil additives. sometimes it does it every day, sometime not for a week. now since I've got such high mileage I'm thinking about changing my oil pump and checking the timing chain assembly when I drop my pan. just a few ideas because this is a very common issue with all LS engines
Changed the oil pump and oil pickup ring on the pickup tube and timing chain and gears and water pump also while that far into it,new oil pump took care of engine noise, we got buy not taking the oil pan completely off but was a little harder to do
I had the suction o ring go bad. Didn't want to go into it at over 200,000. Bought a salvage yard motor with 107k on it when the problem showed up and drove it with the oil light on at every stop light for two years. It shelled out one weekend when it the temp stayed below zero for a weekend. Put the salvage yard motor in and drove it until last May when I sold the pickup.
I've heard of that being an issue, but it usually causes the oil pressure to drop intermittently when that is the case. Brother of mine has a 2002 Z71 he change the pickup and the o ring on just a few years back. Can't recall if he changed anything else while he was in there.
Hey man I know this video is pretty old but my 2000 Silverado 5.3 is making the same sound at idle! Nothing when I increase rpm or driving under load. Definitely worry about it a lot though. Wanted to ask if you ever found out what it was or if the truck is still running with no problems and I don’t need to worry? Thanks so much
I never use motor flushes at any time! Just think about it, it may break some of the sludge down small enough to pass through oil passages but where does the bigger pieces go that don’t? It just will clog and just relocate in a different spot. If u use good oil, change it when u should u will be good! I use 10w30 valvoline full synthetic in my 2001 6.0 and I use the STP synthetic additive and I have a small tick mostly in the cool mornings but goes away. I use a Napa platinum filter made for synthetic oil, Napa filters are great! My pressure runs at about 50 all day long. Chevrolet just tick but will run forever if taking care off! Also wix and Purolator filters will bring up oil pressure and help with lifter ticks
some of those engines have a cold start piston slap that quietins down when the engine warms up so make sure what the sound is in the engine no additive will fix it requires and engine tear down when it gets bad (its bad when hear it all the time the engine is running
My 01 chevy does the same thing at cold starts so i just raise the rpms to mayb just a slight higher just for mayb 5 seconds and it doesnt make the noise let it warm just a few min then drive normal
I can't remember if I was using high mileage oil. I think I did switch to full synthetic at some point. Good question. Just interesting a dealership mechanic thought I should replace all of the lifters.
Just changed my oil in my 2011 silverado 5.3… it started having a loud engine tick right after, never had that issue before. Going to flush it when i get back in town Wednesday and hope that fixes it. Pulled valve covers off and don’t see anything bad
When I do my oil change, After its drained, I pour a half quart or so in to push all the old oil off the bottom of the pan then plug it change the filter, and fill it up to 6 quarts of full synthetic. My Once new truck is now 20 years old and runs great still at 282000
I have a 2001 Silverado very well maintained like new. It started the ticking noise around 2005 it only last about 2 or 3 minutes or less after a cold start. I just let the oil circulate until it stops and then start my drive. It has never caused a problem and the truck has over two hundred thousand miles in it. This is a problem that has Plagued GM for years and unfortunately they have done nothing to address the issue.
@@DustinT one question I recently got a 2000 gmc 1500 w the 5.3 and it ticks too it’s very loud almost like a rod knock on start up but when warm it sounds jus like a lifter tick jus as what is in video but mine also has high oil pressure and when u rev it up or get on throttle to 3k+ rpm’s the oil pressure almost hits 80 is there any concern for that also jus before it started ticking it had service engine oil soon light a check engine light today when I started it the lights were gone but the engine was ticking (didn’t do it before) should I jus try an oil change an see what it does oil seems fine but jus weird how it ran fine w the check engine light an service engine oil soon light then now the lights are gone an it ticks, I know it’s not a rod knock because it gets quieter when it’s warmed up an doesn’t affect performance or anything u can’t hear it when driving but still very annoying considering I jus bought the truck last week an is already ticking
Almost sounded like a 6.6 diesel on the under view . My 6.0 2005 Sierra Denali sounds the same. I just drive on . It's a GM with over 240xxx Klm . Can't expect any sort of perfection. Love the truck though. Subscribed!
Get a quality oil filter with a silicone seal anti drainback valve. Mann, Magneti Marelli, Bosch, Wix, Purolator. Ac delco inadequate. All fram to trash can.
Looking around at hundreds of oil reviews (was deciding what oil to use in the 2013 Silverado LS crew cab I just got) and I did see a couple people say that the castrol magnatec 5w30 (synthetic) helped with that noise. Not sure if the edge has the same effect or not. I went with royal pruple 5w30 because it's now dexos approved and was on sale 5 quarts and a k&n filter for 39.99. still not cheap but our trucks are worth it
Thats what I ran when I had this truck. My father always used Castrol on his 2000 5.3 Silverado, and its got 200k+ and still runs like a dream to this day
My 2000 Silverado 5.3 has a tapping in the engine. It's a higher pitch tapping, yours is deeper, almost a knocking. I've done the motor flush and btw the old motor flush was better, it came in a metal can and seemed more effective. Anyway I've also used Sea Foam and this expensive Hot Shots stuff and now my tapping is a lot quieter but still there and it drives me nuts. I've had the valve covers off to see if any rocker arms seem to have more play than the others and they don't. This is a good video btw.
it always when possible to fill the oil filter before you install the new filter on the engine if you dont then you are pumping a oil filter full of air over your bearings for a split second on some engines you hear the bearing knock before the oil hits the bearings some filters hold almost a quart of oil and also those engine flushes are hard on the engine seals and gaskets so be careful dont leave it in over night thinking you are going to give it a good soak to loosen the sludge up those seal are taking a beating when you do they swell up and gaskets crack then you have a driveway covered with oil spots good luck
Dustin, did your 2006 Chevrolet stop that noise after it gotten warm or hot once you drove your truck down the road for 10 or more miles? Just wondering cause my 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is making the same sound and still makes it, very faint, after I drive it 10 or more miles down the road. Please let me know bud? Thanks
Ro Co yes sir! Good ol 5.3 piston noise. The pre 2002 5.3 vortec motors were even louder when cold. Sounded like a diesel when first fire up below zero temperatures. As long as you don't hammer on the throttle when cold you will have no issues!
Phillyfishguy yeah same with my 2000 gmc seirra 1500 5.3 It does it when I first started and then it goes away but then when I drive it and I accelerate you could hear a little pinging sound I hate it I take very good care of the truck I change the oil once a month if I drive it a lot or not I change the oil but I hate hearing that little sound nobody can As good as me but I hear and I know it’s there
ATF has fixed most of my tick problems over the years. I currently have a 01 5.3 in a Tahoe with 210k and anytime time I hear the lifters talking to me I give it some atf and usually with in 50 miles it goes back to quiet as can be
Fresh oil change 3 days ago, just started hearing this low tone click today at warm idle in park, thought maybe power steering pump, oil pressure is good so hoping its nothing to worry? Im strict on my oil changes every 5000kms 5w30, and yes fram filter. The weather here is -20C so she gets cold starts
I wouldn’t worry about it. I did an update video to this some time ago. I bought a 2014 Silverado with a similar noise. I’ve just decided this is how these trucks run
Just got a 06 Surburban. Heard the tick. Took it to s shop. Says it's common. Did a oil change. Then a heavier weight oil. I trust the guy. Brought it home and it still does the tick but sporadic. Also getting some white smoke on startup. He said it was condensation hole in the muffler stopped up, still has a small amount of smoke. More worried about the tick on the drivers side :(
Didn't notice any difference after your flush.. You can use Transmission fluid as well. It has more detergent in it then the "Motor flushes" FYI, The Vortex 5.3 has a Design flaw..... The p Oil port holes at the top of the Engine (heads) are to small
Your knocks are coming from connecting rods at your crankshaft or wrist pins. Actually hydraulic lifters have a different higher pitch and lifter rattle cannot occur until rocker/tappet tap occurs. Anytime your tappets/rockers arent tapping at top of engine, the ifters have to be fine. That connecting rod wrist pin rap at idle can also be timing is over advanced or fuel that is very low octane below 87
@@John_D2 John, piston slap is wrist pin knock, and it stops when its warm because more oil has gotten to the wrist pins. Simliar to hydraulic lifters can cause tapping at the rockers until oil is warm and enters the lifters when engine is warm
@@EarlGuyton425 wrong, piston slap is when the skirts of the piston are smaller in diameter than the cylinder bore. the bottom of the piston rocks back and forth in the cylinder until it warms up and expands. then the noise goes away. look it up piston slap / piston skirts. it's nothing to do with wrist pins.

I have a 2015 Silverado 5.3 with only 34k same ticking noise had it since I bought it new dealer not concerned says they all sound that way they even started several other brand new trucks and they all sound the same?????
I've got a 2000 5.3, same noise. I've been trying to figure out what it is, but I think I'm just going to swap it out for a 454 (7.4 liter) if it proves to be too difficult.
I know a guy who bought a car 05 or 6 Z71 5.3 and it started doing this at 30k. We would bust his balls asking why he got a diesel. Dealer never did anything and the truck ran forever. Personally I have looked to much into this and my 06 GMC 1500 that sounds like a baby 12value with 215k on will remain as is…a dependable ride
Nice video. My 2001 5.3 is doing it. Once it’s warm it’s really bad at idle and up to about 1300 rpm. Do you think it’s lifter tap? Once it’s about that it completely goes away.
What I’ve noticed that usually being is Piston slap on cold starts. At least that’s the noise mine makes, It goes away when the engine warms up. Just don’t beat on cold engines.
Hey mines dose same thing clacking or tapping noise an gose away after then engine warms up is this anything I should be worry about??? Scared too drive my car sounds great after warm up
It’ll be just fine as long as you let it sit and warm up before you go drive on it. If you just hop in and go when firing it up cold, whether or not it ticks, that’ll cause premature wear on the engine.
Yes I have an 07 classic Silverado 5.3 and it tick when idle and when I press Gass it goes up . Usually when it's cold once it gets going it stops .oil pressure is good
Acdelco filters are like fram orange oil filters they have paper ends as well... cut one apart and see for yourself, I do like wix or fram ultra filters
oring on oil pickup tubes bad on these causes air in oil. Also lifter filter under oil pressure sender clogs up setting off alarms and starving lifters for oil. 5w30 only.
I have one with 250k that makes this noise a little bit louder than what’s in this video, but it makes it all the time. It’s actually quieter, almost gone first thing in the morning when it’s cold. It gets worse as it gets hot. I don’t think mine or his is valve tick. It’s solid sounding and you wouldn’t hear it from the bottom end of the motor. Any ideas or found fixes??? Please help. Just started to be all the time since my last oil change about 700 miles ago
I’m told with my high miles that I need to do the timing chain and sprockets. That it sounds like chain chatter. And I guess the fact that it’s quiet when it’s cold and everything is tighter and also it’s quiet under a load makes them think it is in deed the chain.
I'm just at just about 190,000 with my 2011. Even though originally it called for synthetic blend, apparently GM updated and is saying we should be using full synthetic now.
It will help to run 4 ounces of marvel mystery oil for every 10 gallons of gas in your tank. Those two things will make it whisper quiet, smooth, and perform like new.
Dustin T hey Dustin is your truck still running okay? My lifter is knocking on my '02 Silverado 4.8 with 142K...mechanic who used to be a GM master tech said its common on these engines and I can still drive it just fine, more of a nuisance if anything
I understand that the fit intolerance is inside these new motors is so tight that any debris will plug up the oil passage or sludge you should change the oil every 3000 miles

I got a 05 5.3 sierra been ticking for about 2 years now, she’s got 285k and still running like a champ❗️
You what oil do you use?
I got an 06 silverado 5.3 with 286k miles with only the slightest tick when the engine is cold
No. I sell a LOT of these trucks and very few sound like that, even at 250-300k miles. The fix for most is new lifters.
For faster results I just rev it to 2000 rpm for a couple seconds and it go away.
Mine has done that for as long as I can remember. I bought it new in 01. It’s fine. Keeps going and going. The best vehicle I’ve ever had.
Mine does this too but I've noticed it's starting to burn oil.(2005 escalade 6.0L)
Daniel Alpert
Lol.i just got an 06 with 5.3 an thought damn i didnt know they run like a diesel lol.. But seriously its pretty rough. I currently run mobile one in my cars. Going to do the same with truck and listen for any change
Sounds quieter at the end. Awesome video, Dustin.
Next time open the oil cap when you drain and it wont chug out like that when you drain the flush
Thanks for the tip buddy, I’ll be doing this!
Yes. I always let mine sit dripping for hours. Better then nun
By letting it drain longer it also allows any loosened up sludge work it's way to the drain too.
seafoam in the oil and seafoam through the booster hose fixed mine...slot of it is carbon knock
Exactly my experience as well
I have that typical GM lifter click for the longest time in my 03 Silverado so I bought some Amsoil engine flush ran that in there for 15 minutes got everything drained out put in the 530 Amsoil oil and now there is no ticking at all
I tell you what fixed mine.
That sound is notorious in the 5.3L when the engine is cold. Not really that concerning she will run 200k after that lift tick starts
Replace pickup tube gasket.
Also pistons are camground and expand under heat
Is that so? Because I'm freaking out here in my 2008
Not lifters.
Its called the 5.3 tick its common nothing to worry about. Just change your oil reguler and use good filter
good old Z7!!! nothing but paraffin wax. in 1976 i helped an old man tear down and rebuild the engine in our 69 impalla. was the 2nd rebuild i had helped on. first time i was 14 years old and ruined 3 good pair of levis jeans. this old man had an engine rebuilding business at home, and was a heavy equipment mechanic during the day. one look at the valley and he said we used penzoil oil. we had changed the oil like clock work from the day my folks bought it in 1970. i was 18 years old and i have refused to use penzoil ever since!!
I've always thought that synthetic should not be mixed with non synthetic oil, your oil pressure was lower because of the viscosity change by the flush stuff and temperature. :)
Before oil change Try adding half quart or transmission fluid to your oil and run for about 10 miles, I've been doing it for years with great results
luis flores tell me more about the transmission fluid.
Good video by the way 👍
Thanks buddy!
If not lifter what were u thinking it is? My 02 Z28 has it bad. Goes away when oil pressure up
@@briandiehl2846 They all do it.
Im gonna go new lifters, springs, cam, and rods, rockers, and oil pump/pick up
I just run sea foam in mine before every oil change for a few hundred miles. And always use a ac delco filter
I run royal purple hps 5w30 with a little bit of marvel mystery oil problem solved. hasn't ticked in years
How much is a little bit?
Ya how much is a little bit
How much dammit
How much is a little bit
Levi Ward how much god damn it
Yo the vents gotta be open for the pan to drain smoothly and man that thing sounded like water after you drained the oil!!!
I got the same problem on my 2004 vortec please 🙏 God let this fix her.
I mashed the red line in a couple burn outs and that solved my lifter noise. Been quiet as sewing machine ever simce.
Carlos Majano 💀💀💀
Ace Degenerate idk about Carlos but I just floored it for a mile or two on freeway and tick is gone
Did the same thing in my 2010 and the tick is gone. There is a 3-mile straight away right in front of my housethat nobody ever drives down and so I opened it up to a hundred and just wrote that 3 mi and I haven't heard the tick since. And that's been about a month-and-a-half ago
Probably because they were gummed up and when you floored it the oil pressure forced all the sludge out of them and cleaned them out
The old Italian tune up
Put some mid-grade or high-test gas in it.
Go for it they take 5.5 quarts anyway extra court dont hurting u half a court low
Exactly! I have an 2008 that has 275k on it. It started ticking? I started putting a qt of Marvel Mystery oil in it every oil change. No more tick! The stuffs legit.
DO THIS TO FIX THE TICKING!! One of the exhaust manifolds Bolts probably broke of so if you replace that bolt it won’t tick any more.
Thanks so much
did that oil pressure guage not go to zero upon start up?
or is it the camera angle messing with me?
I had a ticking noise so I put marvel mystery oil and it all went away no more ticking unreal that stuff
That's all well and good but if you bought it used you might have a problem where the last gut didn't change oil enough and has built up sludge
some of those engines have a cold start piston slap that quietins down when the engine warms up so make sure what the sound is in the engine no additive will fix it requires and engine tear down when it gets bad (its bad when hear it all the time the engine is running
Good info right here. I’ve noticed the piston slap on lots of these engines when they are cold. My fathers does that.
My 01 chevy does the same thing at cold starts so i just raise the rpms to mayb just a slight higher just for mayb 5 seconds and it doesnt make the noise let it warm just a few min then drive normal
I thought my 05 Silverado was clean, yours is mint Dustin!.
Agreed. But they just seem to go and go
Mine has 229000 stops tick after 5 minutes and runs great, does not burn or use oil✌

I LOVE THE SMELL OF MARVEL MYSTERY OIL IN THE MORNING !
Almost sounded like a 6.6 diesel on the under view . My 6.0 2005 Sierra Denali sounds the same. I just drive on . It's a GM with over 240xxx Klm . Can't expect any sort of perfection. Love the truck though. Subscribed!
Thanks for the support! Just got a 2014 Silverado and it has a slight tick too, seems to be a Chevy thing! Thanks for subscribing
Get a quality oil filter with a silicone seal anti drainback valve. Mann, Magneti Marelli, Bosch, Wix, Purolator. Ac delco inadequate.
All fram to trash can.
Shapiro Shekelberg you are being scammed if you are using a k&n oil filter. Filters less than a wix and flows the same as a wix filter
Yep wall mart has the best oil prices

it always when possible to fill the oil filter before you install the new filter on the engine if you dont then you are pumping a oil filter full of air over your bearings for a split second on some engines you hear the bearing knock before the oil hits the bearings some filters hold almost a quart of oil and also those engine flushes are hard on the engine seals and gaskets so be careful dont leave it in over night thinking you are going to give it a good soak to loosen the sludge up those seal are taking a beating when you do they swell up and gaskets crack then you have a driveway covered with oil spots good luck
I appreciate the info, I will start filling up the filter before I swap them! This will probably be the only engine flush I do for quite a while
Most of the time it's piston slap. very tipickle with 5.3s doesn't hurt a thing
Agreed! Just did an update video telling people about this same noise on my 2014, doesn’t seem to effect anything

It's piston slap. Not rods or wrist pins.Because it goes away once it's warm.

If you just hop in and go when firing it up cold, whether or not it ticks, that’ll cause premature wear on the engine.
she sounds like a power stroke diesel 😂 I have the same problem I'm working on mine now
Did you solve the problem ?
What was it
Yes I have an 07 classic Silverado 5.3 and it tick when idle and when I press Gass it goes up . Usually when it's cold once it gets going it stops .oil pressure is good
Are you talking about lifter tick or piston slap?
u seem to care about ur engine so y do u use cheap fram an ac delco oil filter?
Acdelco filters are like fram orange oil filters they have paper ends as well... cut one apart and see for yourself, I do like wix or fram ultra filters
If this works, and lasts, you got lucky !

oring on oil pickup tubes bad on these causes air in oil. Also lifter filter under oil pressure sender clogs up setting off alarms and starving lifters for oil. 5w30 only.
That's how my 2001 Chevy Silverado sounds has 256k miles only happen in the mornings
@@derekR33 just took mine to the shop. Noise is pretty loud and they told me something about my lifter needinf some work done.
I’m told with my high miles that I need to do the timing chain and sprockets. That it sounds like chain chatter. And I guess the fact that it’s quiet when it’s cold and everything is tighter and also it’s quiet under a load makes them think it is in deed the chain.
@@derekR33 maybe the push rods knocking? Is the sound deeper and is it coming from the lower part of the engine?
@@derekR33 it's just a valve dude..... Very common. These five threes are just noisy. A valve adjustment would take care of it...
I love Walmart automotive section.
Try a can of seafoam idle it for 5 or 10 minutes. Then change it put a good heavy oil filter on there.
What I've been hearing (Seafoam)
You shouldnt mix syn with con. You will make other issues worse.
I'm just at just about 190,000 with my 2011. Even though originally it called for synthetic blend, apparently GM updated and is saying we should be using full synthetic now.
I had new lifters put on the truck but it still has the tick what else could it be?
It will help to run 4 ounces of marvel mystery oil for every 10 gallons of gas in your tank. Those two things will make it whisper quiet, smooth, and perform like new.
+Matt Leonard Thanks Matt, I will try it out!
Dustin T hey Dustin is your truck still running okay? My lifter is knocking on my '02 Silverado 4.8 with 142K...mechanic who used to be a GM master tech said its common on these engines and I can still drive it just fine, more of a nuisance if anything
Dustin T You still driving this truck with the tick? Has it been running okay? Mine does the same thing...
No change. Hope the flush didn't damage anything inside the engine.
I started using full synthetic motor oil and the ticking has been gone for over a year now on my 5.3
I understand that the fit intolerance is inside these new motors is so tight that any debris will plug up the oil passage or sludge you should change the oil every 3000 miles
A $3.99 STP oil treatment made my 5.3 Yukon run quiet like a sleeping baby
Rafael Gonzalez was it ticking loud before?
Was it ticking before?
