- Rachel Alexandra, with Calvin Borel aboard, won the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, Maryland, with Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird finishing second. Mr. Borel rode MTB to the Derby win two weeks earlier. Rachel became the first filly to win the Preakness since 1924. The race was run on May 16, 2009. Rachel's races here and in the Woodward were absolutely nuts, the only front-runner to hang around in paces that hampered anyone else who was close.

That's false. The only way that stands true, is when the gate opened, the horses all sprinted as fast and as far as they could until one hit the finish line first. What you just said is what most newbies to the sport say. Here's the reality: If the race was longer, Rachel Alexandra's jockey wouldn't have asked her to run until later in the race.

For some reason the video quality is much much better here than the other preakness 2009 videos that were posted. It's easier to see the horses.
My brother recorded it using a small camera. What is the kicker is for the Derby, I had a copyright thing on it so I can't monetize it, but the outfit which did it, Churchill Downs, actually stole OUR recording of it. If it had been NBC/Universal, I would have understood, but this was ludicrous.

I assume you didn't see either Ruffian or Personal Ensign. Both were better than RA who was just as good as Zenyatta.

Don't forget Winning Colors. She beat the boys in the derby. But I am in no way sexist, most best horses are female, they don't have balls flopping around to slow them.

some people don't understand ,, if she didn't get 5 lbs. she probably does not win
I prefer her to Zen bc she's a more versatile filly (my east coast bias notwithstanding) - Rach was dangerous from anywhere on the track, yes, she prefered front/just off the pace, but she had more than one move whereas Zenny was a strict closer, not always, but she ran best from way out of it. Mile 1/8 to mile and qtr, Rach takes it down.
Rachel Alexandra was the greatest filly of all time on dirt. And Zenyatta was the best mare on dirt. I’ve never seen better than those two. They would have won against each other on different days and different distances. We should all be thankful to have witnessed such greatness and in the same year at that!

Great front running by the filly! Mine the Bird left the final burst too late. If it was the Kentucky Derby distance he would have won.
too many horses in the field, Mine that Bird forced way out, probably ran an extra furlong than RA ran
Yeah, another 1/16 eh, maybe Mike Smith thought it was 10 furlongs, same as the derby because he doesn't usually ride back east or maybe the trainer told him the wrong distance or maybe RA's connections sneaked out the night before the race and moved the posts and finish line. Maybe MTB should get some sort of consolation TC because he won the gallop out after the finish,
OR maybe if Big Drama doesn't push RA to a 46 3/5 half and she gets to go 47 4/5 or 48 MTB gets beat 5 lengths.
Too bad she was afraid to take on Zenyatta, so John sent her stablemate to school all you biased NY'ers. She got her ass whipped but good in that race. But still she was voted hoy, ha.
In 2009, Rachel was superior to Zenyatta. Her times, her margins of victories, her speed figures were better. And she won more Grade 1's vs colts.
