Fire Emblem Elitists

  • This video is going to be a bit different. Its not exactly going to be a video talking about 3-4 characters that fit the trope of elitist. I instead want to focus more on the trope itself and how this series explores it through its characters, while using established elitists as examples. Its like a support science… for a trope? A trope… trivia, i don’t know. Oh, and uh. If you thought that I would actually make a video addressing elitism in the playerbase… sorry, that’s not my department.
This video contains spoilers and characters from the following games: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Constance is literally a temporarily embarrassed millionaire. She even calls herself a "temporarily embarrassed noble" in her C-Support with Byleth. Honestly, I pity people with a mindset like that IRL, and I find it an obstacle to social change.
Also, I feel Linhardt, despite not caring for the pageantry or responsibility of nobility, embodies another aspect of noble privilege by his freedom to delve into academic study in a way most non-nobles cannot, and I think he knows it.
Forgot to say this, but Oliver is so divorced from reality, I can't even call him evil, let alone a garden-variety elitist.

I really dig how Ferdinand from 3Hs is the very literal definition of aristocracy, in the sense he aspires to be the best because he honestly believes the nobles should be the mode role for the people. Hence why he's disgusted of the most questionable and shady nobles the game has (most notably his dad) while also claiming how there's nothing "noble" about them.
He also gets some points from me for advocating free education in Edelgard's route too.

One thing I noticed about Three Houses in terms of the nobility: The Kingdom’s nobles seem to go on a “don’t flaunt it” policy when it comes to their privilege. They don’t brag about their status like Lorenz or Ferdinand, nor hold pompous sentiments about “a noble’s duty”. It shows the cultural difference between the three regions. The dynamic is similar to how the north was portrayed in Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire.

Ashe doesn't feel like a noble due to being saved by lonato
Dorothea had to work hard and get some noble "favors" to get there
leonie is indebted to her entire village
Raphael and ignatz are sons of rich merchants(raph is arguably more impoverished but he still has his grandpa and I assume his parents heritage, he just is conscious it can hold out forever)
Dedue situation is one of it's own

People also seem to forget that the Kingdom has a mixture of nobles who place an emphasis on crests vs nobles who don't really care about crests. Sylvain and Ingrid's families obviously care a lot about crests. Dimitri's family, the royal family, only allows crest heirs to ascend the throne, hence why Dimitri's uncle got skipped over in favor of Lambert the younger brother. Yet, neither Rodrigue nor Gilbert really seem to care about crests at all. Felix and Annette have issues with their fathers, but NOT about crests. Neither Felix nor Annette seems to deal with families who care much about the crest system.

This video kinda crystalized why I enjoy Ferdinand so much as a character. Because he's super pompous and full of himself like a lot of nobles. But he has this streak of thoughtfulness to him. Where he'll reconsider stuff when explicitly called out, or disagree with people like Lorenz or Edelgard on how to rule. They did a really nice job making him more three dimensional than you'd expect of this archetype. Adding a smidge or vulnerability or thoughtfulness goes a long way for these nobles characters.
The same could be said for Lorenz too, but Ferdinand is a more balanced character, imo.

I don't think Clair had a negative view of commoners at all, just that she had a simplified vision of what their lives comprised of, which is the result of her peers and elders feeding her that oversimplified picture. In actuality, it's implied Clair actually liked the sound of that oversimplified lifestyle anyway, judging by her tone of voice when talking to Alm. She's just confused when she finds out things are more nuanced than she was lead to believe, but is open-minded and curious enough to want to know more about the commoner lifestyle and to be more respectful. She doesn't strike me as an elitist, but just "happens to be born and raised in an elite family". Her actual attitude towards commoners isn't negative nor does she see herself as inherently better than them.
Even in her backstory via supports and Memory Prisms, it's revealed that Clair was expected to be a prim and proper lady who would go to tea parties with other ladies to find a suitor, but she was far more interested in hanging out with and playing with Cilve and Fernand as kids, and eventually wanted to become a knight like Clive. From the very outset, Clair was an oddball among the noble ladies, which plants the seeds for her genuine interest in the common folk lifestyle.
She also spends a good chunk of the game crushing on Alm even before it's revealed he is a noble himself, and she doesn't stop crushing on him after the reveal, indicating its not just some commoner fetishism either. She liked Alm as an individual, which is far different to the attitude of other nobles, even Clive (who didn't recognise Delthea as an individual worth saving due to her status).
This all culminates in her eventually settling down with Gray, an actual commoner. She initially got off on the wrong foot with Gray, but that was because Gray ironically did to her what you would expect a noble to do to a commoner, and generalised her at first. He treated her as "just another pretty noble", as well as another woman he could try to court without really paying mind to her individuality, which she calls him out on and he learns from. Her over the top reaction is in part because of her heartbreak regarding Alm, which she owns up to, but she was right to call Gray out.
Clair is probably my favourite character in SoV (a game full of favourites for me), and her deceptively nuanced character is a large part of why.

So Ferdinand is my favourite Student in Three Houses, so like 4th favourite character in the game overall XD, but the most important thing to remember about Ferdinand is that almost every time he says 'Noble' he is talking about spirit and deed, not bloodline. He strives to be a noble person and to uphold noble ideals. The whole reason he constantly challenges Edelgard is not due to ego but because he believes any leader worth their salt needs a person who can compete with them and tell them when they're making a mistake. I find it super weird that he doesn't auto leave the Empire after time skip because of this, but then again I think it's implied that Edelgard takes away basically all his power and freedom on most routes, so maybe he tried to dissent and she shut him down because she's not interested in counter arguments. Anyway, he may have a tendency to put his foot in his mouth at times, but I find him to overall be one of the most genuinely caring and well meaning characters in the game. I feel like it's easy to look at him and say 'oh he's super arrogant' but the more I read into his supports the less that seems to be true, he holds a deep and genuine admiration and respect for his peers and teachers regardless of their status and really doesn't fall into arrogant thinking too often. I just wanted to share my thoughts, since I think it's pretty easy to take a shallow look and miss a lot of this character who I really enjoy.

If the story were to focus on commoners only I guess all nobles would have to be antagonists. Something about a revolution maybe, we can tell a lot of things with that, but the bigger the country is the more likely it is some nobles would join the revolution in hopes to save at least part of what they risk losing if the power shifts.

Out all of them I am least fond of Ferdinand.
Less so about his elitism and more so because his "pushy side" on how people should conduct themselves is mild triggering to me.
Lorenz, on the other hand is one of my favorite characters from 3H, he nags less than Ferdinand (maybe because GD is a mixed house) and his supports are more about how he views the responsabilities that his position as a noble brings and I admire that trait of his.
Echoes... Man, Echoes. I absolutely adore the Deliverance crew and how they handle that.
Specially for Clive and Clair, my favorite characters!
I absolutely love Clair and how well developed she is. Her first impression falls more on the "Innocently insensitive" side than outright snobbish and even then we can see learns from it on her next appearence as she chides Fernand for disparaging the Ram crew and even apologizing for his behavior as well as vouching for Lukas and them.
Clair is one of the most mature examples because she is more open to listen to others, take criticism and self reflect a lot.
Clive is amazing. I could dedicate praises upon praises over how good his writing is and dare I say that he's even more developed than the Main Lords from his game.
Clive is a good man, heralded as a paragon and showered in praises but he isn't perfect.
His elitism is one of the rares instances that isn't played in comedic effect and is an attribute of one of the "good guys" used to great effect to both give a character development arc to him as well as showcasing his flaws.

What is interesting to me is that it’s largely ignored that Three houses spends quite some effort on Noblesse Oblige. We also have the creator of the modern system, Rhea, who made it a church creed, which is relevant since she had to deal with the ten elite tribes. Seems to me she was serious about imposing certain standards on them since they possessed power. The cast has Lorenz has the arch-elitist who is still good-natured, Ferdinand who has a ego but compared to Lorenz is far more down to earth and less likely to make unforced errors, and also many other students who touch on the theme.
Overall past the honeymoon period I haven’t seen much discussion about 3H trying to paint a diverse picture, since the roles of Rhea,Edelgard and Dimitri largely dominate the discussion, with nobility often ending up approached very black/white.

Also on the subject, how long and how often has TWSITH tried to goad nobles into power plays? There’s a pattern to actively stoke ambitions and cause civil war. Was the nobility always this cuttroath, of has centuries of the manipulation fostered this culture?

We spend so much time in FE and wider medieval fantasy settings restoring monarchies because it’s an easy plot setup. I’d really like some of these things to examine those ideas a bit more closely and not just always tell us to restore the kingdom because the lord is a great guy.

Despite all of this I find these group of characters to be...quite fascinating, and they always seem to be on my endgame team in some shape or form.

I've kinda had to balance my love between Lorenz and Ferdinand, I couldn't decide who was better. But I kinda fell on Lorenz more as a character. Lorenz believes in a class system, but also (in Catherine's support I think?) believes in a commoners right to overthrow a corrupt ruler. He believes in "higher standards" for nobles which includes distancing themselves but actually cares about how to actually improve the lives of subjects (such as direct spending on markets as opposed to a singular more wealthy establishment.). He refuses to date common women not because he automatically thinks they are poor and ugly but because he "needs" a certain standard for women, such as enough experience to not be overwhelmed with noble responsibility. I think FE3H just explore his nobility a bit more than Ferdinand.

He is firmly grounded, he knows how nobles are, and his father is probably on the top of the list of how a noble realistically do. But he has is own idea of a life circle of nobility and commoners interact to improve their conditions that is admirable. Even better, differently from other nobles, he doesn't considers himself "right" but he force himself to dedication of his duty at the cost of losing people he loves. He is, IMO, the perfect chain link between the "elitist nobles" and "nobles who doesn't feel the gap"

Elites in FE always hit me in a strange way. Historically there have been good and bad nobles but one should note that nobles within our history have had to be good in general. Any bad lord would eventually get overthrown or conspired against so generally kings, Lord's, etc. had to be good. These people were also highly educated and usually taught how to fight and kill by the age of 8. Generally, when you're looking at horrible nobility it comes from them going insane from some injury or old age. Of course the current views on nobles within media is more or less due to more modern views on such things.

Also the cool thing I liked about some of her supports is how she is learning to live life as a commoner and learning things from a commenter's perspective. The Yuri, Hapi and Mercedes supports with her touched on those things. I especially liked the Constance & Hapi A support because she practically didn't care about the commoner and noble dynamic between her and Hapi.
