    Shamir Nevrand is Garreg Mach’s sniper extraordinaire. From a Dagdan Mercenary to a Knight of Seiros, she is one of the professors in the esteemed Officer’s Academy. Where Cyril’s unit and character performance was, in my eyes, a bit negatively viewed, and Hanneman’s unit performance certainly was suspect, but his character was just a bit lesser known, Shamir seems to be universally understood as a Solid unit and a well-liked character. For first impressions… yeah, its not hard to see why. Funnily enough, Shamir’s unit performance is really straightforward, sort of like her matter-of-fact personality. She’s just super solid as a unit, and has turned out to be a personal favorite character of mine, not only because I think she is a great take on the deadpan character, but also because her deeper character traits are those that I personally find relatable.

    Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical role-playing video game for the Nintendo Switch published by Nintendo and developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo Games. This is a first in the series, as all the past mainline games were solely developed by Intelligent Systems.
    This is the sixteenth main game in the Fire Emblem series and the first on a home console since 2007's Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and features more detailed graphics than previous installments. The game focuses on four protagonists: the teacher, Byleth, and three students and heirs of their countries, Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude.

    At first glance, Shamir is a cool, cold-hearted, sexy killer, but there's something else about her that I absolutely love, and it's her subtlety. Nothing about her is thrown in your face or gets repetead over and over, it's something that's rare among not only Fire Emblem characters, but every character that comes from an "anime-y"world.
    Shamir is straight-foward, but she's not aways rude, she can be kind, and not in a "I-I d-don't even like you, b-baka!" type of way, it's mature and realistic. She reacts accordingly to the situation, kind to people who are kind to her, and not taking sh*t from anyone when the time needs it. And Shamir deals with her past and her problems in a very subtle manner, it doesn't define her entire character.

    • @BubblegumSempai
      @BubblegumSempai Před 4 lety +15

      Characters like her aren't actually all that rare in anime world's (and anime-like games). In fact there's an archetype for her character.

      @@BubblegumSempai As someone who hasn't watched anime for a handful of years, I had to google what this word means, and I have to disagree that Shamir is a kuudere. She's cold on the surface, sure, but she never acts cute, even when she does in fact show affection. In a game full of anime tropes like Three Houses, Shamir rarely blushes or gets flustered when she does expose her emotions, the closest to this being that support with Raphael.
      To me, that's the secret of Shamir being such a great character. Nothing is forced about her. She's not acting cold to try and hide a cute side or anything like that, and she doesn't hesitate about starting conversation with people when she wants to. She doesn't act like a cold robot, and doesn't go on and on about having to be emotionless to be efficient in what she does.
      I can't "believe" in those "dere" characters, they all seem too forced to me. Or at least if someone acts like that in real life it's not someone I would start a conversation with. Shamir, on the other hand, seems very approachable depending on the topic. I'm sure there are "dere" archetypes for characters like Bernadetta and Marianne, though, who acts the same with everyone until a certain level of friendship is earned.

      @@fernandouehara2665 In other words, Shamir is very honest about her personality rather than acting a certain way to cope/hide their weakness/issues (Sylvain, Hilda, Dimitri), and her being cold/expressionless is probably a byproduct of her being a spy anyway (if she wasn't already like that for the job in the first place). It's one of the reasons I enjoy her S support so much since she's still essentially the same person.
      In fact, the only person I can think of that comes close to the "kuudere" archetype is probably Edelgard if crimson flower isn't your first playthrough, since she appears very cold and emotionless from the other routes but softens up and gets a lot more comfortable with her personality when Byleth is around. Then again, she isn't all that cold in white clouds either and is quite charismatic even, so it still hardly counts.
      Also, I doubt Bernadetta or Marianne qualifies any "dere" AFAIK, and are just the embodiment of social anxiety and depression respectively. Bernadetta just gets a little more comfortable with those she A support with while Marianne just got over her depression entirely. Though, I suppose Bernie is rather loud for someone who's supposed to be very shy.

      @@tyxant5919 Completely agree, Shamir is who we see from the beginning, and I don't think a character needs to change or have an arc if they are already great from the start. I love characters who stay true to who they are, that is, if they don't have a crippling flaw to overcome, such as Marianne and Bernadetta. I like them both, and while I agree it's unfair to compare them to anime stereotypes, I think they overdo their gimmick a little too much for my taste, just like Caspar, Raphael and many others. That's why I prefer characters like Shamir, because every interaction with them is different than the previous one.

    Listen here internet analysis boy, I'll have you know that, as the self proclaimed biggest Shamir fan on the internet and IRL, she has no flaws and is perfect in every way. Growths, bases, none of that matters, all that matters is that she is the ultimate waifu and nothing you say or do can convince me otherwise.
    Jokes aside this was a good take, glad you touched on the many layers of Shamir, she really has more depth than most people are willing to dive into. I wish you had referenced some of her paired endings though, as her ending with Hubert is downright badass, and her ending with Leonie is really good as well.

    I'm pretty sure Dagda is implied to be a rather large continent beyond Brigid. What you assumed to be Dagda was just a Brigid Isle. There is no way a small island like that could pose a serious threat to Fodlan and hold the Brigid archipelago as a vassal state.

    I'm really glad you touched on her softer side that she hides to protect herself - even a lot of people who like her tend to miss that and focus on her being deadpan/snarky, but that's only part of what makes her a great character. It's really easy to focus on just that and to be honest the writers very easily COULD have left her as nothing more than that trope and she'd still have been cool.
    But I really loved how many of her supports show her encouraging and looking out for the students (her support with Ignatz is genuinely very sweet in how she tries to get him to actually act onB his dreams) and her supports with Alois are also touching in that she's very supportive of even his goofier side because she values him for being a positive influence both for people in general and for her.
    And since I love them, I also will note that her supports with Catherine are legitimately really touching to me. Her struggle to show/tell Catherine how much she cares hits close to home (especially when her criticism of Catherine's loyalty to Rhea is more about worrying Catherine will get herself hurt/killed than anything else - something that comes up with Dedue as well), and seeing the good influence she is on Catherine (in addition to the students who she supports) was really heartwarming since it results in a well-earned happy ending

I wasn't far off, but I was surprised how much she grew on me and I ended up marrying her my first playthrough. She had this charm and uniqueness to her, and though a lot of times you have to say "what they like" to increase supports with Byleth, it came natural for me. I literally tried to up my supports by saying things I thought she wanted me to say, but it turned out I should've just went with what I wanted, and that was cool. It helps that she has good supports with a lot of other good characters. I felt that part where she couldn't say she wouldn't die for Catherine.

    Maybe I'm the only one who views Shamir as an underwhelming unit then. I was never satisfied with her sniper performance so I used Pegasus knight/falcon knight in my recent crimson flower run. She's decent and the class helps her growths. But she's definitely worse than Leonie, who also focuses on Lances and bows and just has better growths overall. Bernadetta the falcon knight was also better as well, although Shamir certainly has the weapon rank advantage at first.
    As for her character, I really enjoy Shamir support with Hubert. Although it's the one route where she can't talk to Catherine. But I feel like Shamir and Hubert have a surprising lot in common, and they're both willing to do things behind the scenes. Was also pleasantly surprised with her Caspar support too, although it was rather similar to his Petra support since it dealt with a similar theme (his father being responsible for the deaths of Dagda and Brigid citizens in their previous war against the empire). Overall I think Shamir is an ok character. Her character design is also amazing so she's got that as a great advantage too.
    Edit: one slight issue that I have with Shamir is that she claims that she never betrays her contract/employer unless necessary, I think. But she betrays the knights of Seiros in crimson flower. She justified that she owed Rhea a debt and she paid it off already. But obviously, on the other 3 routes she stays with the church units because she believes in the cause of defeating the empire even if she's not a believer in the church inherently. It almost feels like she went against her own judgement to side with the empire in crimson flower, especially if she did break a contract that she had with Rhea.

    • @aintfalco7968
      @aintfalco7968 Před 4 lety +10

      in response to your edit: There are a lot of characters who don't justify their siding with the empire well at all. Mercedes and Marianne go from admiring rhea to wanting to rid Fodlan of her incluence literally overnight. Ingrid constantly talks about being a knight of Faergus and protecting homeland and honoring her family's name and whatnot only to... invade Faergus mercilessly and install Cornelia as its ruler?

    • @hmm2340
      @hmm2340 Před 4 lety +4

      I don't think she believes in the Church/defeating the Empire in the other routes, per se. If you don't recruit her on CF, her death quote about realizing she let emotions get in the way implies she stays out of personal loyalty (probably to Catherine and Alois). Since she also respects Byleth, it makes sense that on most routes she sticks with her friends/Byleth while in CF she has to choose between her heart (Friends/knights) and head (mercenary decision to join the Empire/Byleth)

      @@aintfalco7968
      Yeah the less we say about the lacking justification for joining the empire the better lmao
      My problem with Shamir is that she's an assassin with contracts to her employer. If she betrays contracts then it ruins her reputation and she can't get another job. If people learn that she betrays the knights of Seiros despite owing Rhea a debt, that makes her non employable again, and why would she ever get hired again afterwards? It's like a big loophole for Shamir job wise that she betrays her employer when she wasn't necessarily done with her previous contract.

    • @l.n.3372

      @@hmm2340
      Shamir tells Catherine and others that she believes in the same future to fight in on 3/4 routes, it's simply that Catherine believes in Rhea and the goddess while that isn't important to Shamir. Same goals and endgame but for different reasons, basically. But Shamir definitely believes in the justice of ending the war and defeating the empire on 3 out of 4 routes.
      It's why her decision to side with the empire suddenly makes less sense because she didn't believe in the empire/Edelgard cause on the other routes. She doesn't necessarily believe in the church either, but she believed in what they were fighting for against the empire. Shamir isn't a religious believer but she had an alliance with the church when they all oppose the empire because they had the same goal but for different reasons to fight.
      Also, I really hate when people (not necessarily you, just in general) say that people are close to Byleth and thus leave for Byleth and join Edelgard as a result. IMO that's pure BS because Byleth doesn't really have any emotional connection to ... Well ... Anyone. They're bland as hell. Nobody in their right mind would betray their friends and homeland for Byleth of all people. Not when better written characters are all around you in this game. The students themselves give half assed responses about believing in their professor thus they switched houses. That's fine in the academy but NOT for the war. You can't justify your decision in war based on the classroom you sat in as a teenager. That makes absolutely no sense. Especially because the students didn't even know Byleth was still alive, yet for some reason they all travel to the monastery on the off chance Byleth survived just to what - see Byleth again of all people?! It's pretty stupid that Byleth could ever be the deciding factor for your decision in war. You didn't join their class as a teenager anticipating the war after all.

    • @hmm2340
      @hmm2340 Před 4 lety +2

      @@l.n.3372 Yeah but beyond some of the differences (Byleth, the Empire in CF being much less outright villainous vs in other routes, etc.), I think her "choice" (I put in quotes because it's really the player's choice) is meant to reflect on her "emotionally closed off/amoral" self conflicting with her "rough-but-caring/still somewhat idealistic" self". I don't think her choosing to defect is really shown to be a "good" or "correct" one - I view it as her following her "shut myself off/don't make connections/don't care" mercenary self to its logical conclusion, even if she doesn't really believe in it by that point. Even though she says in her Hubert supports that she doesn't care if she's seen as dishonorable/etc. but her comments to Byleth about fighting Catherine - to me at least - imply that she actually has some very real regrets about it. And while her CF-specific endings don't speak to it, I do feel like she'd end up with even worse emotional scarring because of it (while I was pleasantly surprised with her Hubert ending, I think thematically she'd either end up alone or with Leonie trying to atone for it).
      Anyway, my point is that I do feel there's at least some justification for her joining, especially since my impression is that she has real issues with Rhea/the Church and mostly sticks around for her friends/Catherine and because she has nowhere to go rather than because she has a contract or attachment (And she's really there for her friends/students in the other routes and grows into believing in their cause), although I do feel they could have handled it a bit better. An Edelgard/Shamir support chain where the former discusses her plans and basically sells her on it (because as a foreigner AND a non-noble she'd really benefit from it) might have helped both Shamir's story and Edelgard's since while Petra's arc is somewhat similar she's also royalty.
      Edit: I agree on Byleth's influence for the most part. I'd argue that Shamir - as another emotionally stunted mercenary - is a reasonable exception to that since they have some common ground, but I definitely hate how many students betray their families/homes because of a blank slate avatar they knew for a few months and who hasn't even been around for years. But I have a lot of complaints about how recruitment was handled!

      However by doing so you're giving her such a narrow skill kit that makes her one note as hell.
      It is beyond worth it to have her master one of the Beginner classes so she can learn a movement Combat Art.
      Or even practice her Flying so she could learn Darting Blow, and if you really want to get weird, she can practice Flying further to get Alert Stance to make her a dodge tank on top of being a nuke.
      The game is designed to let you customize your units, don't squander that potential by keeping them in their vanilla classes throughout the whole game, even if it is what you want their end-game class to be.

    Wait. Can you not carry Hunter's Volley into Bow Knight upon mastery? It's not like you have to be in Mage to use Draw Back, for instance . . .
    As a unit, and this is a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I personally rate Shamir as one of the bottom three units in the game--even worse than Cyril, for that matter. While Shamir absolutely does have early Hunter's Volley going for her, Cyril has *earlier* Point-Blank Volley *and* better Growths, and while being good Bow users in Three Houses stops the both of them from being worst of the worst, that doesn't fix the problem that the both of them have where the list of what they have to offer begins and ends with "ranged damage". As far as I'm concerned, an utter dearth of supporting capabilities is a fatal flaw in a game like Fire Emblem Three Houses, where so many characters can actually contribute more than just raw damage take-it-or-leave-it, and your exp gain can only support so many bruisers anyway that you might as well only dump it into your best ones, like your house leader or Lysithea (who *themselves* actually have the capacity for support *on top of* being the ridiculous powerhouses that they themselves are!).
    Anyway I liked your video because of that convenient spreadsheet. Thanks a bunch!
